Recognizing Responsibility:  A Similitude to Recognizing a Rise

By: Seilatolaide

It is no longer news that the forthcoming NUESA election has been pegged to March 13th by the (ESEC),  this ticks a bell to becoming conscious of selecting the right leader devoid of sentiments but gauged by merit and capability. The consideration of a leader based on sentiments, religion and departments is not a new thing in the faculty of education  which, however, could lead to voting a leader who is not just less capable but also with a bad intention of embezzlement. One of the processes towards choosing the leader is the one that relies on the ‘ESEC’  who are known as the Education Student’s Electoral  Commission.

The ESEC of the faculty of education  are the electoral body who ensure the organization and supervision of the election process, having a fair election will bring a positive judgment and flexibility. It is a major process to the majority picking the rightful representative and it’s one thing for the electoral body to be selected and it is another for the electoral body to be impartial in their process of conducting the election which calls for this aspect of the process of election not to be undermined.

There are various responsibilities in the hands of the electoral committee and it’s a thing to be a committee and it’s another for them  to be aware of their role.
The responsibilities of this electoral committee is to monitor the political campaign, mainly they cover the assurance of an organized, well undertaken, highly supervised election into various offices from the president to the financial secretary, treasurer and every other post into the political office. This process should be strictly conducted as the process leading to voting the one who will stand firm in upholding the great affairs of the students should never be given a glimpse of levity. They are to enhance the the arrangement for the registration of persons qualified to vote and revise the registered voters before they proceed into the action of voting, this is as important also in the aim of ensuring a fair election.

To carry out these functions, a disciplined mind is required which connotes that to ensure a fair election in the faculty of education, the electoral committee must posses the value of  transparency which implies openness and accountability in all their activities pertaining the  process of an election any lack of transparency could be linked with a corrupt state of the process of election declaring it void.
Importantly, the spirit of integrity will push a lot to rise and instill the faculty of education with a group of leaders who the people want and see as qualified.

Integrity means honesty and truthfulness if this is a major lacked value in these set of committee then there will be stain in the process of the election and conclusively, the value seen before the nomination of the committee should well rooted without  a shake, commitment is very essential to the process of election and in order to have strong education we start from the process which will help with a strong faculty by enhancing a free and fair election.

Mazi’s Disqualification: A Rain of Propaganda or Supremacy of The Constitution?

By: Fagbemi Joshua

Within the period of electoral activities where the battle for a place to the first 10 Nuesa members are being slugged out for, it styles to portray a stage of interesting moments. Through the dark calculations that witness the fall of the unfortunate and the white modifications that transparently credit the powerup of democracy, the manifestation of both add up to the adventurous moment we all love to dwell in. As per the fall of one is the rise of another, let’s solicit with our dear ‘former’ aspirant and ‘former’ Sport Director who was shown the exit door prior to entering the stage.

As to the other end, we rejoice with comrades who are still in the race for the 001 of NUESA-UI. Your wheel is still full of greeze. We would have love to see a 4-man race for the presidential seat but the cooks and boils at the backstage caught our dear friend unaware to get injured by the powerful hands. The hands who are on tab to rumble on the uncultured mistake of our dear friend. What a mistake! What a mess! What a situation! Maybe he was told of his unconstitutional actions but just felt he’s of superior to that document that guides such affairs. Now, he has learned in the hard way. We hope he really learned.

Following the disqualification of Emmanuel Olamide Samuel (pka Mazi) from the 2024 NUESA-UI Elections on March 06, 2024 after he was found to have been guilty of three offenses which were termed serious by the electoral commission, ranges of thoughts and reviews has been the order of the day. As to the rain of politics, you can’t separate the inclusion of propagandas which completes the squard of politics being of intellectual launch and in some way a dirty game.

Was ‘Mazi’ played on that warranted his disqualification? Was it a move of propaganda by some selected people who were angry because of his questionable performance as the Sports Director? Was it a move from the camp of the opposition candidate? Was it just a calculation that went wrong for him? Can we say it just happened without the influence of external forces? The beauty about this scenario is that all these unanswered questions have an equal chance of being the right question connecting to this.

To provide a chance of clarification, if not full, this article will run through the possibility of his disqualification being a political propaganda or the supremacy of the constitution or both.

A Rain of Political Propaganda?

The presence of opposition in a certain election births term like democracy, rigorous campaigns, adventure, run of attacks and the likes. In such scenario, it is impossible to neglect the fact that a candidate can work out ways of ensuring the other candidate loses. That’s where you see several rumored attacks that fly around about every candidacy which might be either true or false. But you can’t erase the possibility of cooked up stories. It is also essential to know that majority of these framed and tricky tactics spur out from the camp of a candidate supporters.

The fact that Mazi has an opponent already justified the possibility of this option. Even though the findings of the FLC Programme and Implementation Monitoring Committee (PIMC)  were part of the allegations that dragged Mazi to the hands of the disciplinary committee, we can’t erase the impact of that petition from former Speaker, Rt. Hon. Usman Bolarinwa. The petition, in some style, made the whole allegations too serious which prompted and painted the matter in a big picture.

Also, the petition was really timely that it was submitted on Friday, February 23, which was a day to the FLC sitting and also the last day of the Nuesa Dean’s Cup. To say it wasn’t pre-planned and strategic will be like ignoring a house on fire. The former speaker being an intellect of the constitution knew what will befall the former sports director with that petition. This guided the timing of the submission and its processes with PIMC findings.

Again, that the former speaker is from the camp of Mazi’s opponent – Brazien – raises concerns of the true shade of that petition. Was it a petition centered on punishing the former sports director for his offenses or a petition directed and planned towards his eventual disqualification? There’s a possibility that this petition has been termed to be political propaganda. We can’t deny it, we know it is.

Supremacy of the Constitution?

After getting alleged of three different count of charges – improper expenditure, extra-budgetary and accepting sponsorship directly into his personal account – which were all found serious in line with the constitution, there was a need to take disciplinary actions. Also, According to Chapter 3, Article 1 of the ESEC 24 Electoral Act, a candidate must be free from any disciplinary or criminal records deemed serious by the Election Commission.

Constitutionally, you have to align with the fact that the former sports director is not close to being worthy of running as a presidential candidate. Having such an individual, who has been alleged of several offenses, become the Nuesa-UI President will spell detriment on the integrity of the entire association. It will also in such light portray the kind of credibility and image all educators stand to defend.

Even though he was said to have accounted for both the budgetary and sponsorship funds, the fact that he went on disarray by working against the constitution spell alot on his constitutional knowledge and leadership role. To these varying effects, his disqualification obviously suffered from both the influx of political propaganda and the supremacy of the constitution.

Notable Sights from ESEC’24 Electoral Act

By: The Scribe

As Nuesa elections draw nearer, the atmosphere styles electric for the great show ranging from screening to press night to manifesto and the election day. Owing to the recent Electoral Act Release by the Education Students’ Electoral Commission 2024 (ESEC’24), it is necessary to point out some key items as well as changes in the document.

Voter’s Requirement

In Chapter 2, Article 1 of the electoral act, the requirement to qualify as a voter for the coming election is to first be a student of the faculty and likewise possess a valid ID Card that proves such membership.

Aspirant’s Requirement

According to the first part of Chapter 3, Article 1, any educator aspiring for a position at the faculty level must be on a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) not less than second class lower – 2.2.

Aspirant in Disciplinary Action

In the same Chapter 3, second part of Article 1 of the Electoral act, all candidates/aspirants must be free from any disciplinary action or criminal record. It also means that any aspirant who is currently under investigation at the time of screening is not qualified as a candidate.

Unopposed Candidate

As against the former pronouncement of what an unopposed candidate must possess in terms of votes to be declared winner, there’s a new change. According to Chapter 4, Article 3 of the Act, an unopposed candidate must pull a ⅓ of the total votes to be declared the winner of such a position. Recall that the former Act of 2023 requires ⅔.

Screening Score

It’s pertinent to state that the screening score benchmark is still pegged at 50%. This can be found in Chapter 3, Article 2 of the document. This means that any candidate who failed to score up to 50% in the electoral screening shall be disqualified from the election race.

Payment of Fines

In Chapter 6, Article 1 and 2, provision has been made for candidates who violate any of the electoral law shall be made to pay fines or even disqualified owing to the weight of the offense. Also, the fines will be in the range of 5,000 to 10,000 naira.

The Political Field:  A Ground for Human Freedom

By Seilatolaide

The existence of a democratic state has changed a lot in the structure of the society giving ways to a free society marked by government of the people, by the people and for the people. The idea of government by the people implies a periodic election to selecting the qualified leader after a thorough look into their potentials and qualifications.

When a glance is given to what democracy implies, we view it from the lens of macro level deviating from its coverage and  extending down to the micro level. A society craves for a leader with a gel of good leadership and truthfulness to truly serve the interest of the people. With the lift of democracy, a special avenue is given to the people to extend their franchise through picking the leader who has intendedly crafted their manifestos to fit into the needs of the people.

In this instance, the society is marked as “Democratic” as the level of freedom has been given to the citizens to freely pick for themselves. But in negation to this, if the leaders are therefore picked or selected without involving the people then the society will be painted with colour of  “deprivation and lack of transparency”.

The state will be viewed particularly with an insatiable glance and leave the people in the democratic state with a weakened soul. People are seen clamoring and protesting for what they are deprived of and hoping for rectification and restoration to the image the society has attained. This protest is a way for them to call the state into consciousness of what it is theirs and cant be taken from them.

Whatever It is that will later grow into bounty will start from a small bound. The political practices start right from the engagement of two people who have the same interests and bring down another  to succumb to his own interest. Ruling, leadership and representation start from a micro level up to the larger level, it can be viewed in a hypocritical way for the people at the root to act in an unwelcome display the leaders are warned upon. If at the micro (school, organization), a leader embezzled money what would it be like at the mass level.

In the school setting, the action  of selecting or choosing candidates who are to serve the interest of the people without being subjected to the necessary procedure that includes the masses participation is a slap to the face. A democratic state which most are aware about should not only be instilled in the head but in the action of catering for the affairs of the people. Hence, going through flexibility and a fair operation will make governing smooth and  not regrettable.

The freedom of the masses is very important in every aspect of life, be it at the highest leadership stage or the lowest. The lowest engagement is a sign or a conclusion to what an individual can establish at the higher level. The leaders are not bosses who make decisions without carrying people along as a result of sending servants to work.

A leader cares for the emotion of the people and engages in ensuring the good affairs of the people in the state. A leader serves; they serve the people and they are only chosen to represent the people’s interest as the whole people can’t put themselves in such a position. So to select representation is a good freedom of the people which is totally not to be denied of them.

ON PACKAGE: WIll IT BE AN UNREWARDING SESSION UNDER TEAM EDGE? EDUCATOR SPEAKS…

By: The Unwavering Pen

Just when we think we have seen enough drama amongst our executives of the faculty of Education, we have yet another beautiful episode. Sit back and relax.

The tale of Team Edge is one that doesn’t look to be ending anytime soon. From the good party vibes of vincoulo to Edu Got Talent, it has also got some “not-so-funny” stories from last semester’s package and now, we have another episode of this session-long movie series. There have been stories and news flying round that the Edge administration has reportedly claimed that educators who are usually entitled to their packages after initially paying their dues at different levels during the session will likely not get a package this session as there are claims the economy is too hard to provide PACKAGE.

It tends to be surprising that this administration actually came out to say such a thing. It has left some educators gossiping and some others infuriated. What further got educators enraged is when news got out that they are reportedly aiming to redirect the money initially meant for the educators’ package into producing “a more standard ” book. Another sect of educators are flabbergasted by this as they find it funny.

In an effort to collect random views of what educators think through an interview with the students from different levels, a 100 level student who prefers to remain anonymous said even with the economy, the executives can still get to something. She also referenced hall packages and dept as well, posing a question of “what if every institution we paid dues to just decides to give books?” While stating the fact that books are an essential part of a students life in university, there could still be something more.

In an interview with a student in 300 level, he also expressed his displeasure at the executives using the economy as an excuse to not get a package but a “standard book.” He stated that the economy is also affecting the students, because it’s not that easy to pay dues. He said it doesn’t have to be flashy, but bringing it to a mere “standard” book. He also stated that if they want to give us a standard book, due to the economy, they might as well not ask us to pay dues due to the economy, because people sourced for these funds to pay dues.

With another fellow educator from the department of Science and Technology Education, he expressed an aggravated form of displeasure in thinking that after struggling to pay dues in trying times, he doesn’t get what he wanted. Imagine how a finalist will feel after he has finished 4+ years of writing, he gets rewarded with a book. When a finalist from the aforementioned department was asked, he said “why should I still be getting a book after I’m done with my course of study? Am I going to use my so-called standard book to write during my NYSC programme?”

It is surely without a doubt that it’s not a welcomed idea by educators. It is impossible that there can’t be as little as a plastic fan as a package for educators even in this economic turmoil. It is definitely impossible to come to the conclusion that there’s nothing else for them to give to educators as packages. A common handkerchief or a hand towel is one off the top of an idea; but making a claim that there’s no package simply because the economy is too hard is too audacious one might think.

This again has placed further inquiry and doubt as to whether team edge is fit enough to actually deliver. In having a dialogue with a finalist of a department she wished to remain anonymous, she explained that if funds were minimized at the previous semester’s colorful events, perhaps there won’t be an excuse for educators not to get a package this semester. Some educators, in frustration, have also come out to anonymously voice out by saying that if they were asked to make a pic between a “measly standard” book and a package, they would go for the latter. This would make one wonder if Team Edge is truly acting in the best interest of the educators, or they are concerned with doing things just to trend by catching the eyes of Uites.

This will no doubt be a slap on the face of the executive administration as they are reportedly about to do something jaw-dropping. Some educators have expressed disappointment and regret in paying dues this session and wouldn’t have given it a second’s thought if it wasn’t a prerequisite towards getting our respective course forms approved by the faculty. How will this packageless semester look like in the eyes of educators who struggled to pay dues even in these trying times?

It’s funny but perhaps it is better to remind Team Edge that it wasn’t easy for students to pay dues. They had better wake up from their sorry dreams as a “standard book” is not enough to cut out as a substitute, because under normal circumstances, isn’t the book package supposed to be standard?

Was ASSE Invincibles Cheated Via UISU Super Cup Representation Quota?

By: The Scribe

As the weight of this very discussion seems to portray a heap of controversies interpreted as injustice and clarity, it becomes a matter of necessity to open the cards and check for appropriate ticks. In some manner, we always clamor for a society that expresses a will of transparency, fairness and equal representation for all. How well can we then say we’ve displayed and did justice to it all if our actions are still being left to end with a question mark? As we operate here in the model of the normal world, it further simplifies to mean that actions exhibited in this small space will definitely at one point or the other materialize to a greater course of action in a bigger environment. As there are doubts, let’s unravel the links.

Following the final of the Nuesa Dean’s Cup that was played between Arts and Social Sciences Education Department (ASSE) and Human Kinetics Department (KHE) on Friday, February 23, 2024 at the SUB Pitch, the connection of that event to the ongoing UISU Super Cup has established a ground that pose doubts. As known, the winner of that final match, KHE, went on to represent education in the Super Cup which has so far raised concerns and questions the integrity of the Nuesa Sports Director, Emmanuel Olamide Samuel, to the timing of the dean’s cup and representation quota.

Concerns have been raised on whether it is right from KHE to represent education in the UISU Super Cup as “Last winner” of the dean’s cup or it should have been ASSE as “Last Session Winner” of the competition. The manner at which the Nuesa Dean’s Cup came about, activities surrounding the onset and conclusion of the competition, and the level at which the management and organization of the Dean’s Cup went will not allow the space to trust that ‘all is well’. As there are doubts, let’s pick up the doubts under 5 talking points.

UISU Super Cup Timing

According to the UI Students’ Union Sports Director, Omokukpo Etana, all sports directors were aware of the Super Cup and its rationale from the beginning of the session. Meaning that the competition isn’t just coming out of the blue, it has been planned right from start. It should be noted here that anything called ‘Super Cup’ definitely has to celebrate the last winner of a particular competition or set of competitions before the onset of another. Put in simple way; as England Community Shield is a Super Cup match between the immediate winner of the English Premier League and FA Cup of a concluding season before the commencement of another.

Under the same light, it could be agreed upon that what the UISU seeks to celebrate is to have a league of last winners of the Dean’s cup in each faculty come together and play knockout matches prior to the onset of another set of Dean’s cups for this session. Meaning that the UISU Super Cup is meant to be played before the commencement of any faculty’s Dean’s Cup. It was planned to come before as it seeks to celebrate the last winners of the Dean’s cup before each faculty begins another for the current session.

For proof, the timing of this Super Cup explains it all. The Super Cup is fixed to this kind of week period which is very close to when each faculty will begin their respective Dean’s cup; this tell of what it represents. Also, as of the commencement of the competition on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, out of 16 faculties, only the faculty of Law, Education and Clinical Sciences have had their Dean’s cup for this session. This proves that the Super Cup timing seeks to recognize last session winners of Dean’s cup.

NUESA Dean’s Cup Timing

One tends to raise the question of why the Nuesa Dean’s Cup came so early this session. Of the last 2-3 sessions, the Nuesa Dean’s Cup has always been played a week or two prior to Nuesa Week. To rally this, the final of last session’s Dean’s cup was played on the sports day of the Nuesa Week. The question still remains: why did the Nuesa Dean’s Cup come earlier than expected?

When the question was thrown to the Speaker of the Faculty, he replied – though unsure and skeptical – that the Sports Director wanted to organize the Dean’s cup as early as possible so that he can focus on his ambition to run for the faculty president as he needs to resign. Again, this raises further questions. Rushing the Dean’s Cup timing because of his personal ambition is not a valid argument. Why jeopardize that for his personal goal? At no point should his personal ambition have affected the Dean’s Cup.

Now, the Dean’s cup which was played affected the representation quota of education at the Super Cup. You will also tend to doubt if his personal ambition was even the reason the timing was of such, one cannot also erase the thought of “if the Sports Director intentionally fixed the Dean’s cup to such timing so as to tamper with the Super Cup representation’. Again, one cannot at any point erase such doubt.

Last Winner vs Last Session’s Winner

The UISU Sports Director expressed that the goal of the competition is to bring together last winners of each faculty’s Dean’s cup winner and define a champion of champions. The definition of ‘last winner’ styles to be more than a denotative usage. As reported before, only three faculties have a latest winner for this session’s Dean’s cup which means that for fair representation and also to glorify the definition of the competition, all last session winners should have been made to compete for this tournament in as much as the competition will be on a sessional basis.

As KHE went on to represent education as ‘last winner’ and not ‘last session winners’, it then raised a very significant question. Who then represents education in next session’s UISU Super Cup if it comes before (which is meant to be) the Nuesa Dean’s Cup? KHE again? As last winners? The timing of the Dean’s Cup already altered the representation quota and this should have been given a deeper look by the organizers of the Super Cup before accepting KHE as Education representative.

Was ASSE Invincibles Cheated?

This question births two answers. Yes and No

No, they were not cheated. If ASSE had won the Nuesa Dean’s Cup which it lost at the final by 1-0 to KHE, the consideration of this whole writeup wouldn’t have in any way worth the tip of an ink as ASSE would have still went on to represent Education as both last winners and last session winners. Also, no one can ascertain the real motive of the Nuesa Sports Director for organizing the competition at such bad timing. As we can’t rule out the possibility of favoritism to his own department – who later won – and brought about this particular thought.

Yes, ASSE was cheated. As there are high chances of the competition coming before Nuesa Dean’s Cup next session, it means that the same KHE will again represent education as ‘Last session winners’ and not as ‘Last winners’. The last session winner idea which didn’t work for ASSE will now work for KHE next session. Also, that 90% of those participating in the Super Cup are ‘last session winners’ of their faculty means that ASSE was cheated.

Sports Director’s Integrity

Pending the outcome of the Nuesa FLC Displinary Committee, the real integrity of the Sports Director will be known. As he has been alleged of mismanagement, accountability, questioning the bad organization of the Dean’s cup, and some financial irregularities through a public petition by the former Nuesa FLC Speaker, Rt. Hon. Usman Bolarinwa and the findings of the Program and Implementation Monitoring Committee (PIMC), his credibility will be revealed.

The outcome of the disciplinary committee will weigh the stance of what he portrays as his own integrity. That there were manipulations during Nuesa Dean’s Cup or that the representation quota of education at the Super Cup was mismanaged lies on the sole question mark that had been tagged to his integrity.

A Call Back to The Giant Goal

By Seilatolaide
Second semester started and tick so fast with an approach like a blink of an eye. The period has been embodied with several activities both academics and extracurricular activities. Second semester in the University of Ibadan is well known to be filled with several of these activities which is why a ring of call is essential to prevent students from losing the track to the targeted goal of coming out with flourishing grades.
The semester is relaying to an end as the

semester is left with just few weeks to examination, it is not oblivious that the extracurricular activities are taking their height at this period and so many students want to participate in what it has to offer but in doing this, it should be noted that examination is weeks close and therefore everyone should adjust to the 80 to 20 way of balancing academics with extracurricular activities.

These extracurricular activities include jaw war, sports, thug of words, political campaign and process. Note that the intent of the article is not to totally tell readers to drop extracurricular activities as they hold a high benefit and impact on one’s self esteem, confidence and academic motivation; also impact on excellence.
But the twist is that the measurement of academic performance can not be based on the achievements earned from engaging in these activities. These activities have also gone to the length of distorting students’ seriousness in terms of presence in the classroom, consequently leading to missed tests and class assessments.

Questions could be asked around how to manage oneself to prevent future crises in academic performance during these periods where extracurricular activities are at their peak and exams are fast approaching. This is a simple strategy which requires putting engagement in these activities at their lowest to cover up with the primary aim of being in the university.
Going back to the ways through which academic excellence can be achieved, all the strategies to academic excellence include good time management.

This is where balancing is highly emphasized, a to-do list can be generated for easy follow up, maintaining a good health habit through proper nutrition, fruits and exercise, attending classes more than before and getting prepared ahead of impromptu tests. Also, getting one’s note ready through taking notes in classes or having a copy of a missed one to stay updated, having a good reading and revision time by establishing reading habits and methods that enhance your easy assimilation, all these will help establish a great wave.

A call to this is an important reminder as earlier stated that the extracurricular activities won’t have a calculated bonus to what the academic results will look like. This implies that a proper preparation starts early and as early as it starts, it should be done with much focus. The fresh students should be very conscious of this as it will be their first session in the university, a good start in the first semester can be easily knocked down by the input and outcome of the second semester. To prevent this downfall. one needs to buckle up and grab the big grades ahead.

Role of Student Organisations: Prioritising Student Welfare Over External Charitable Endeavours

By: Scottie

Student organisations, tasked with representing the interests of their members, often find themselves at a crossroads when it comes to allocating resources. In recent years, there has been a growing trend towards diverting funds towards charitable endeavours external to the student body. However, this shift raises questions about the core mission of these organisations and whether their primary responsibility should lie in serving their own constituents.

Reflecting on past experiences, such as witnessing funds earmarked for charity projects seemingly unrelated to student welfare, prompts a critical examination of the purpose and priorities of student organisations. While altruism is commendable, it must not overshadow the fundamental obligation to address the needs and concerns of the student community. For instance, a scene from  yesteryears, a moment frozen in time. In the year 19gbogboro, on a sombre date etched in memory, I beheld a perplexing sight. Money, extracted from the coffers of a student association, flowed like water, purportedly for the noble cause of charity. But pause for a moment, dear reader, and ponder with me: What charity was this? Was it for the destitute students grappling with tuition fees? Was it to provide essential stationery for those facing exams without resources? Alas, it was neither.

As I stood amidst the spectacle of generosity, a gnawing realisation crept in – this charity was not for the welfare of the students it purported to represent. Instead, it was a hollow gesture, a mere token of benevolence with no tangible impact on those it purported to serve. The funds, extracted from the lean pockets of the students’ association already burdened with the weight of cultural night, movie night, publicity rigour, were squandered on ventures far removed from their concerns.

But let us not cast stones hastily, for therein lies no solution. Instead, let us reason together, dear Assesaites, and ponder the true essence of our noble endeavour. Should a student association, tasked with safeguarding the interests of its members, be burdened with the mantle of charity? Should the weight of altruism rest upon shoulders already laden with burdened expenses? You and I know that a lot of activities the association organises often need the contribution of donors hence, It is essential to engage in open dialogue and collaborative discourse to reevaluate the objectives of student organisations. Rather than merely following trends or external pressures, it is imperative to establish a clear vision and mandate that aligns with the core principles of student advocacy and welfare.

One must consider the broader implications of allocating resources towards external charitable endeavours. While such initiatives may garner praise and recognition, they may also detract from the primary mission of student organisations. By diverting funds away from programs and services directly benefiting students, there is a risk of neglecting pressing issues within the student community.

Moreover, the financial burden placed on students associations to support external charitable endeavours raises ethical concerns. As students already face financial constraints and academic pressures, imposing additional financial obligations for charitable causes unrelated to their welfare exacerbates their challenges. Let it be known far and wide, that the true measure of our compassion lies not in grand gestures of charity, but in the tangible impact we make on the lives of our peers. Let us be the architects of change, the guardians of student welfare, and the champions of a cause worth fighting for.

Furthermore, there is a need to explore alternative approaches to promoting social responsibility within the student community. Student organisations can leverage their collective voice and influence to advocate for systemic changes that address root causes of social issues. This may involve engaging in policy advocacy, community partnerships, and grassroots organising to effect meaningful change.

Ultimately, the success of student organisations hinges on their ability to strike a balance between internal advocacy and external engagement. While charitable endeavours have their place, they must not overshadow the core mission of student advocacy and welfare. By prioritising the needs of their constituents and fostering a culture of solidarity and empowerment, student organisations can fulfil their mandate as vehicles for positive change within the student community.

In conclusion, the debate surrounding the role of student organisations in charitable endeavours underscores the importance of reevaluating priorities and staying true to core principles. By prioritising student welfare, needs that are more peculiar to students of the association . Let us be the thread that binds us together, weaving a narrative of hope, resilience, and unwavering solidarity. For in the end, it is not the grandeur of our gestures that define us, but the sincerity of our intentions and the impact of our actions. It is through collective action and collaboration that student organisations can fulfil their mandate as catalysts for positive change within the student community.

The Leadership Space: Electing via a Height of Responsibility, Less Fame

By: Seilatolaide

In the macro sense of politics, we are exposed to various processes that lead to choosing a leader, they move around with their slogan and manifestoes which includes declaration of motives and intention laid down to be achieved. We see these aspiring leaders in their political party creating links to expose people to what they possess and are capable of doing; providing a line of history in time past.

Choosing a leader implies putting in place someone who represents and serves our affairs, political leaders are not a figure of fame but a figure of servitude, transparency and accountability. The majority then come up with a representative who will manage their affairs and welfare. Hence, the process of selection should be of a top priority as a fault in selection will terminate the whole essence of picking a representative.

Driving down to the micro level of politics which brings down politics to our immediate environment, this can take place in the family where the father who is the leader of the house makes decisions and seeks the opinion of the entire household upon the execution. In this process there is invariably an influx of politics.
Moving to a more political micro scene, the school is an example of an institution with several activities which require a level of political leader to manage the affairs of the students. In this process, students get to have records of leadership positions and learn how to manage the affairs of others for future opportunities.

In the university we see the display of leadership, cutting across the whole student union leader to the units where we have the facilities down to the subunits where we have the departments. In the area of selecting leaders, students need to be observant and smart in selecting various identities in order to choose the right leader who will take care of their affairs as a student.

It is no longer new that some students opt in for being a leader mainly for fame and the honour that lies in the position lacking the skill to manage the affairs or even with the intention to mismanage the appointed funds. Now it’s a new session to have new leaders who we might have huge expectations of for fair management. The intention of the leaders should be well cleared of any error around attaining a leadership position as these are students and people who look up to them with trust. And this trust is the reason behind voting for them.

There has been preparation going on around electing new candidates who will take up the mantle in the faculty of education come next session. The independent body that oversees NUESA electioneering process – ESEC – is being appointed to enhance free and fair election in the faculty.
As preparation is going on it should be noted that a free and fair election will turn unfair if the elected leader happens to serve his interest and not his people. This brings us to the angle that lies on the leaders’ awareness of their role, sincere intention and the people who are not to be biased in selecting who will truly represent their interest.

A good leader hovers around the centre of making decisions which will enhance the betterment of the people. The leader is aware of the needs, wants and cravings of the people. Being elected with trust implies that he must be able to work around enhancing the achievement of this aim through the power of decision making, he should be inherited with skills and mental capabilities to cope with stress and be versatile in handling a series of demands coming from the populace.

A good leader exhibits a high level of integrity which earns him a great respect alongside courage and humanness. To say, active listening is an upright skill all leaders should uphold and various ways of getting people’s opinions can be promoted to ensure that the people’s demands are well known and acted upon. Most importantly, transparency and accountability should be a matter of importance to a leader. A leader who claims sincerity will never switch away from transparency and accountability.
From the angle of the people, it’s not new to know people vote for a candidate based on criteria which could stretch to their charisma, but we shouldn’t be blinded by any sort of material things and charisma in order to elect the right leader.

Many people choose a leader on the platter of identity (religion, tribe) in the school setting. This occurs where some people vote for a leader based on their religion, tribe, faculty, department and this affects the ability to elect the potential leader.

When it comes to picking the right leader for a position, one should totally deviate from any personal attachment in order to be fair and just. Sentiments and personal relation has been the greatest weapon affecting the selection of right leader. Therefore, a leader should be elected based on their leadership ability and not sentiment.

“We Have Taken so Much ‘Rubbish’ that We Think ‘Rubbish’ is Normal”

By: Scottie

Sometimes I wonder how much ‘’rubbish’’ humans can take, at other times I wonder how much ‘rubbish’ a place can accommodate. Either way we take so much ‘rubbish’ that we almost can not distinguish the norm from the abnormal. In today’s society, the acceptance of ‘rubbish’ has become so ingrained that distinguishing between what is normal and what is unacceptable has become a challenge. From neglected facilities to littered environments, the tolerance for ‘rubbish’ in school settings has reached alarming levels. At other times you imagine a hike in prices and you see people move on like it is nothing. Just like corruption has become a norm, likewise mediocrity, cheating and others so as the common ‘rubbish’ become a norm too. This article delves into the pervasive acceptance of ‘rubbish’ within educational institutions, examining its detrimental effects and advocating for change.
Consider the scenario of Dupe*, who voiced concerns about the neglected state of a facility used by students daily. Despite her complaints, both Dupe and the facility have tacitly accepted the accumulation of ‘rubbish’ as normalcy. This acceptance extends to unused equipment, like printers gathering dust, emitting odours, and impeding functionality. The normalisation of such conditions raises questions about the standards upheld within educational environments.
Furthermore, the indifference of administrations towards ‘rubbish’ exacerbates the issue. Despite being responsible for maintaining conducive learning spaces, administrations often overlook the impact of ‘rubbish’ on the student experience. The prevalence of overcrowded classrooms and neglected facilities highlights a systemic failure to prioritise cleanliness and hygiene, contributing to an environment where ‘rubbish’ is tolerated rather than challenged.
Jacinth* lamentation over her faculty’s indifference to ‘rubbish’ reflects a broader sentiment among students. Despite the commissioning of new buildings, the persistent presence of litter underscores a disconnect between infrastructure development and maintenance. Students rightfully question why ‘rubbish’ should be deemed acceptable within educational settings, especially when it directly impacts their learning environment.
The normalisation of ‘rubbish’ within educational settings has far-reaching consequences on student well-being and academic performance. Cluttered environments not only foster physical discomfort but also hinder concentration and productivity. Moreover, the acceptance of substandard conditions sends a message that students’ comfort and safety are not prioritised, undermining the educational experience as a whole.
Beyond the immediate implications for student welfare, the acceptance of ‘rubbish’ in educational settings contributes to broader environmental degradation. Littered campuses not only detract from aesthetic appeal but also pose risks to local ecosystems and wildlife. Educational institutions have a responsibility to instil values of environmental stewardship, yet the tolerance for ‘rubbish’ perpetuates a culture of apathy towards sustainability.
Aside from the state of the classroom environment, sometimes one has to look at the state of the markerboards too. On several occasions, lecturers are forced to dictate calculations, just imagine calculations because the markerboards are stuck with permanent inks. One may say these are resultant of students’ mismanagement but last time we checked this same student pay association fees, maintenance fee among others but yet no remedies were made. Can we talk about the interactive boards not being used, but again it is something we have accepted as a normal decoration to our environment rather than something that should be in use.
It is evident that the acceptance of ‘rubbish’ within educational settings is detrimental on multiple fronts. To effect meaningful change, stakeholders at all levels must take proactive measures to address this issue. Administrations must prioritise cleanliness and invest in maintenance protocols to ensure facilities are kept in optimal condition, and also facilities that aid Students learning should be optimally used. As educators we are occasionally taught to use aids and learning aids but only rarely do we see this in use.
Students, meanwhile, can advocate for their right to a clean and safe learning environment, holding administrations accountable for their responsibilities. You may wonder how students are to do this. The simple answer is through Honourable Versace*, and maybe Incoming Dolce*. If this already representatives or incoming representatives will take their campaigns beyond Vinculo and other activities that are already a part and parcel of all administration but take cognisance of things more related to our academic wellbeing we may right be on track.
In conclusion, the normalisation of ‘rubbish’ within educational settings represents a failure to uphold basic standards of cleanliness and hygiene. By challenging this norm and advocating for change, we can create learning environments that prioritise student well-being, academic success, and environmental sustainability. It is time to acknowledge that ‘rubbish’ acceptance is not normal, but rather a symptom of systemic neglect that must be addressed for the betterment of all stakeholders within educational institutions.

Speaking Potential: The Way to Leadership Efficiency

By Seilatolaide
Dreaming of being a leader comes easily and in one way or the other we might likely find ourselves taking a leadership role. This could be in an organization, or even as little as the classroom whereby the leader will exhibit excellent ability and potential to pull teams together for the purpose of actualizing set goals. We might have gone through episodes of thoughts on how to handle people’s affairs in any area as a leader. This shall be thoroughly explained.

Communication has been the key to connectivity and inter relationship in various settings. With a high level of communication people arrive at consensus and agreement. Imagine if there are groups of people who do not understand one another, this will lead to obsolete aims as there will be difficulty in interaction.

After the stage of understanding has been accomplished, it will be observed that some people are naturally blessed with the ability to eloquently express themselves anywhere. This is a skill that is needed in every aspect of human life but not everyone who can communicate is gifted with this trait. This creates a room for people to learn how to speak eloquently with confidence.

There has been different training around the ability to express ourselves in school, starting from primary school education, effort has been made to build pupils for speaking through the use of debate. Here, pupils compete for gifts and other amazing prizes like scholarships. Secondary schools are not left behind in ensuring this sustainability and also at the university level. There are several methods used to enhance good speaking skills through the literary and debating club, class presentations, and project defense. All these help students to develop good communication skills and motivate them to improve themselves after modeling people who have exhibited exceptional ability to speak well.

There are blessings that lie in this effort. One of such is the one reflected in a leader who needs good communication skills to inspire and motivate other people. Effective communication is an important non technical skill, without it there could be a high chance of productivity deficiency. There are various ways through which a good speaker can be a good leader, this calls us to strive to become a good speaker. Jaw war is not just an arrangement for University of Ibadan students to enjoy but to learn and emulate some speaking attributes through the presenters.

A good leader with good speaking skills will promote bond among the team with clear communication on role, goals and objectives that will bring the team together to achieve those clearly defined objectives and goals. It brings about trust as the goals are clearly defined without confusion and misunderstanding among the team. A good leader with good communication will find ease in executing so many actions and there will be a high level of charisma which will earn such a person huge respect.

Good speaking skills should therefore be highly embraced by students for future ability to coordinate and actualize aims wherever they find themselves, this is a power that does not only retain honour but helps with a good social intelligence, expression, guidance and efficiency.

The Appraisal of Talents Route to Uncovering more Talents.

By Seilatolaide.

Talent being innately a gift bestowed upon an individual can manifest in diverse ways through their relations and social activities. With the inborn of talents, there has been a high level of satisfaction in performance ranging from learning to skillful activities, which are a very gifted aspect of one’s life. It requires a lot to have a discovery of the innate gift embedded in one as an individual which helps with a successful life. The question then looks on how do we know the talent we possess? Going through episodes of regular self discovery which arise through several activities that individuals engage in.

In this mode there are ways to actualize one’s drive and inner desire to perform a particular thing and also there resides the energy and ability to person such in an excellent manner.
Humans grow up to discover who they are and several areas of their flexibility, they understand they do something better than another in a more easy manner with huge inner satisfaction. This is called “talent” which is necessarily not learnt through technical subjection but for the perfection of a glossy state of one’s talent – creation of an improvement state can be embraced. There are a number of talents in the world which we possess distinctively owing to the fact that humans have individual differences in every aspect. One’s perfected areas could be another’s weakened area. Some of those talents are dancing, singing, writing, sporting, speaking, culinary art and more.

We could have wondered why do we find an engineer being a popularly loved singer without having to work in the field of the certified profession? There are several people who find themselves becoming successful based on their most loved talents. This shows the height of the importance of talent as it can waive the lane to poverty and brighten the line to a good life backed with satisfaction. A lot of people dwell on what they can do better than their subjects to live a great life. Countries have accommodated talent competition shows to reward talents which serve as encouragement for more people to rest in the tone of discovering their talents. Some of these shows are “America’s Got Talent, Nigeria’s Got Talent”. These avenues showcase various individuals who come up with their talent and as well reward them.

The importance that lies in talent shouldn’t be underestimated and this can be stuck to owing to the fact that schools being primarily focused on academic excellence did not deny the existence of talents and its discovery, the growth of a state relies on the ability to discover talent to promote a creative growth of the state. Schools finds way around creating competition to help people have a more built up talents and improve on themselves. The Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan held the “Eduvibe Show” which consisted of various students with talents and the emerging winners were adequately awarded and motivated. This process leads to self confidence in one’s ability and the need to improve more for growth.

Talent should be accorded a high rate of attention to at any point in one’s life and it heavily lies on parents, teachers and counselors to help students achieve a heightened level of satisfaction in life activities through various steps. This will enhance talent discovery and self improvement. Also, reinforcement should be given to students to encourage them which then increases their self motivation and self confidence at any point in their life.

Community Service as the Rock to the Strength of a Society

By Seilatolaide

As a voluntary action carried out by individual, community service has carved the society to a glorious change marked with growth, a community is formed base on the group of people coming together to share understanding, languages, ideas, culture and way of life. Which eventually foster the sense of belonging and promote a social content. The community built upon this requires a lot of devoted hard work to bring about growth and development that changes the edge and breath of the community.

As a student climbing the academic bridge starting from the foundation of schooling to the firm success of the view. The journey to college has exposed us to various disciplines that have deep coverage of our responsibilities to the society, going through social studies down to civic education, and government. Students have been exposed to citizenship education and service learning which provide a profound knowledge of the essence of engaging in this service.

Even though community service is a voluntary action carried out, it should be noted that it’s not always a voluntary action as people perform it based on distinct requirements ranging from citizenship requirement, criminal sanction, school or class requirement and requisite to obtain benefit. The major focus of this article is to prevail community service as a citizenship requirement and school requirement.

Exploring through the benefit community service firmly upholds, the importance has been rigorously emphasized which gives birth to a long activity to retain the benefit it holds. Due to these benefits which is sternly emphasized, schools including the university of ibadan has allowed organization that facilitate the growth of the community through their delivery of services. Rotaract club in the university of ibadan happens to be one of the great clubs of the prestige university with the aim of delivering services to the community including the university itself. This is to promote community development, as the development of a community can be enhanced based on the services delivered which could cover the range of skill development e.g. vocational training that degenerates into self independence and self development of humans who are the main frame makers of the community.

It is not obvious that this voluntary action is sometimes highly boycotted by students due to several factors which could affect students’ readiness. But a minimal delimiting factor shouldn’t halt a mass participation in community service as this means a direct offering into the society development. And a distort to the society will directly or indirectly affect everyone as the society is conjoined and connected through a fold and there should be commitment to its development to prevent a further disturbance or imbalances.

Being aware of the glaring importance and essence of engaging in community services. Everyone should in one way or the other contribute to the growth their society. An organized association does not necessarily need to exit before an action of giving back to the society and community services is not only restricted to labor work including the cutting of grasses, sweeping, and disposing garbage it covers orientation to the society for awareness about their health, growth and skills which expose them to more opportunity. It also includes orientation that create awareness about the importance of education and sharing of school items to the younger generation. This is a process of ensuring the wellbeing of the society and preventing its downfall from sickness of ignorance. With the importance that lies with community service I hope every student will contribute to anh community they find themselves to promote growth and development.

True Essence of Education: You are the Scam You Think School is

By Ayinke

For a while now, the echoing voice of a distraction has been dragging some feet away from the path of education. You see this distraction keeps echoing “School na scam” – a sentiment that, on the surface, may seem valid to some. However, upon closer examination, it becomes apparent that education, in its truest form, is not a scam, and neither is school merely a confinement within four walls.

Before delving into the core of this discourse, it is crucial to redefine the concept of education. Education extends beyond the conventional subjects taught in classrooms; it encompasses a holistic approach to life, fostering personal development, social understanding, and essential life skills. So, while industrial engineering, chemistry, English, Economics, and Arabic Studies may constitute the formal curriculum, they are just fragments of a more extensive tapestry that education weaves.

Wait, did you all think school is all about what happens in the four walls of a class? Well, to reorientate you, you are in school to learn more than just academic subjects. You are here to grasp the intricacies of relationships, to understand the nuances of human interaction, and to unravel the mysteries of life’s invaluable lessons.

Have you not seen people start their political journeys in school? You should ask Gucci or haven’t you heard of how brands and some well meaning associates were built? Ask AdunAde brand or Scribe on how he has been able to reach places beyond just the confines of an economics class.

In the pursuit of education, one must recognize the symbiotic relationship between formal education and the broader spectrum of learning experiences. The classroom serves as a foundational platform, a space where knowledge is disseminated, theories are explored, and intellectual curiosity is ignited. However, it is crucial to acknowledge that this is only the starting point.

Beyond the structured curriculum, education propels us into a realm where we learn resilience in the face of challenges, adaptability in diverse environments, and the art of collaboration. These are the intangible but invaluable lessons that shape individuals into well-rounded, socially adept contributors to society.

Contrary to the notion that “school is a scam,” it is essential to acknowledge the immense role educational institutions play in fostering personal growth. Schools provide an environment where individuals not only acquire academic knowledge but also cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and emotional intelligence.

Moreover, the camaraderie formed within the school community becomes a microcosm of the diverse society we navigate beyond the educational realm. Friendships, conflicts, and collaborative efforts within the school environment mirror the dynamics of the world at large, preparing students for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Let’s address the elephant in the room – the rising wave of skepticism about the traditional education system. While it is true that the system has its flaws, dismissing the entire concept of education as a scam oversimplifies a complex issue. Instead, let us focus on reforming and evolving the educational system to better cater to the evolving needs of the 21st-century learner.

Embracing technology, fostering creativity, and promoting experiential learning are essential components of this evolution. By integrating real-world applications into the curriculum, students can bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical implementation, thereby enhancing their preparedness for the dynamic challenges of the modern world.

Furthermore, education should not be confined to a specific age group or institution. Lifelong learning should be championed, encouraging individuals to continuously seek knowledge, adapt to new information, and stay relevant in an ever-changing landscape. This mindset shift transforms education into a lifelong journey rather than a finite destination.

In conclusion, the assertion that “school is a scam” is a narrow perspective that fails to recognize the multifaceted nature of education and I must say school is not the scam but you who chose to scam yourself by looking the wrong way with school. While the traditional education system may have its shortcomings, it remains a cornerstone for personal development, social integration, and the acquisition of essential life skills. Education, when approached holistically, extends far beyond the classroom walls, shaping individuals into resilient, adaptable, and socially aware contributors to the global community. It is time to embrace a nuanced understanding of education, one that acknowledges its transformative power and seeks continuous improvement for the benefit of present and future generations.

Technology; Advancing Education Towards a Prime State

By: Blessing Shodipe

In general, technology refers to the tools, techniques, and systems that are used to solve problems and achieve goals. In the context of education, technology can include devices like computers, tablets, online learning platforms, educational software, and more.

The use of technology in education actually dates back to the 19th century, when early computers and mechanical devices were first used to assist with teaching. However, it wasn’t until the 1990s that the widespread use of technology in education really began to take off, with the advent of the internet and the development of more powerful computers and educational software. Since then, technology has continued to advance and become more widespread in schools and universities.

Ever since technology has been used in education, it has made educational materials more accessible and available through the use of online platforms like Schoology, Edmodo, Coursera, edX, and Udemy. These platforms offer a wide range of courses that can be taken from anywhere with an internet connection. In addition, many educational institutions have started to make their own materials available online, often for free. This includes resources like lecture notes, course materials, and other resources. As a result, students have more access to high-quality educational materials than ever before. Just like in the University of Ibadan, students have access to softcopy of educational material due to technology. Also online lectures are now being conducted, all thanks to technology.

Technology has had a significant impact on teachers’ effectiveness in their respective dispositions. One way is that it has made it easier for teachers to access educational materials and resources, which has helped them to improve their teaching methods. Additionally, technology has allowed teachers to connect with other educators and collaborate on projects, thus helping to improve the quality of education. It has also made it possible for teachers to assess student performance more effectively and provide personalized feedback.

There are also some disadvantages to the use of technology in the advancement of education in Nigeria. One is the digital divide, which refers to the gap between those who have access to technology and those who do not. In Nigeria, this is particularly evident in rural areas, where many people do not have access to the internet or other digital tools. This is a major issue in Nigeria, as many rural areas do not have access to the internet or other digital tools. This can make it difficult for students in these areas to access educational materials and participate in online learning.

In addition, it can be difficult to train teachers in the use of technology, which can limit their ability to effectively use it in the classroom. Without equal access to technology, the quality of education can vary greatly across Nigeria. Or let’s take for example a university student that doesn’t have a standard phone for online classes or even have money for data to be able to join an online class or to take a test or exam. These are one of the ways technology is affecting us in Nigeria.

Also the misuse of technology by the students is another disadvantage of technology in education. With the increase in the use of social media and other online platforms, students in Nigeria are at risk of being bullied or harassed online. This can have a significant impact on their mental health and well-being, and can even lead to dropping out of school. In addition, there is the risk of students being exposed to inappropriate or harmful content online. Many students now engage themselves in cyber crimes like yahoo yahoo and all.

The use of technology in advancing education in Nigeria is great but governments should try and address these disadvantages. Educational conferences that focus on the risks and dangers of technology use could be very beneficial for students in Nigeria. These conferences could include topics such as cyberbullying prevention, online safety, and responsible use of social media.

To address the issue of the digital divide, one solution would be to invest in improving internet infrastructure in rural areas of Nigeria. This could involve building new internet service providers or expanding the reach of existing ones. In addition, providing subsidies or other incentives for families to purchase devices like computers or smartphones could also help to close the gap. Universities should also make good use of the technology fee being paid by students, a specific amount of data should be given to the students since they pay for technology fees.

Technology has really advanced education in Nigeria, and it is still advancing it. If these little disadvantages can be addressed and a solution provided, technology would make learning more interesting and fun in Nigeria.

A New Semester with an Embodiment of Social Activities

By: Seilatolaide.

The new year has been confined alongside with the resumption as University of Ibadan fills up the order in this terrain. Owing to the joyous year and celebration, the haste in resumption could put most students in the dilemma of quick resumption due to  relaxation that comes with good embodiment of the new eve. The second semester marks a continuation of the academic session, it entails that students are to be as prepared and rely on their set goals which were laid down in the previous semester. This is not a semester of lackadaisical acts screened with the aim of fun alone but a new semester to brace up and brighten more of the colour the previous semester held.

It’s no longer news that most students have their grades dropped in this semester as it is compiled with so many social activities, ranging from the ones organized right from the departments, faculties, to the student union and other organizations in the school campus. Primarily the aim of being in school is to attain academic excellence which will later incite a better life in the future. In the process of attaining the properly laid goals, they come alongside distractions and other aspects of life. But it requires a strategic student to arrive at a great balance of any other aspects of life that can divert from the core purpose of being in school.

This second semester will be the first of it all to the fresh students in the University of Ibadan, although they’ve had been through orientation that guides them to the culture and how to effectively actualize their aim in the school campus. But a reminder is a key to effectiveness,  as the mind can be easily diverted if not properly secured. The importance of co-curricular activities can’t be eliminated as well as social involvement of human beings tagged to the fact that we are social beings who actualize their aim through relationship with one another. In the involvement of co-curriculum activities students  have access to the opportunity to derive necessary skills and discovery of talents which aid their aim of being a student.

Nowadays, students become successful from the co-curricular activities they engaged in during their time as undergraduates and which have made their lives meaningful and impactful. Nevertheless, even with all the goodness that comes with engagement in social activities and co-curricular activities which will be heightened in this second semester, high consciousness of not diverting from the main lane to success is largely emphasized.

The question goes that, can there be balance in these social activities that second semester holds? Interestingly, there can be. With a strategic logic of 80/20 mode of attending to the most important priority to the less important, social life can’t be done away with as it adds to one’s morale and self confidence. Through such, one can maintain a good mental health which is one of the positive effects to academic excellence. The idea of 80/20 means 80 percent of the time should be geared towards the academic affairs, while the remaining 20 percent should be devoted to social life, this emerges a brightful end and promotes equilibrium in every aspect of this academic journey. The problem that lies in the drop in grades in the semester can be reduced following this assigned percentage as social activities will not outweigh the academic activities which are needed to fetch the first class which has been well penned.

It’s advisable every student coming into a new semester to be highly prepared and focused to prevent failure and unplanned results which will later result into depressive state afterwards, this semester should be used in its opportunity and brightness hope it portray to bring about a better result that will enhance a fulfilled heart towards the accomplishment of the academic objectives.

Transition From School To Society; The Realities

By: Empress
The school and the society are inextricably in complementary terms due to the fact that they work together hand in hand, and the fact that one is established to make another relevant and worthwhile. According to John Dewey, the school is the mirror of society. This is apparent in the notions for the establishment of schools which is to serve as a vehicle to preserve and transmit the values and belief system of the society into individuals most especially the younger generation for them to make a meaningful existence and co-existence in the society.

First of all, the keywords in the topic are “transition”, “school” and “society”. The school, to start with, is an institution where teaching and learning take place. In better words, it is a place learners acquire knowledge and skills that are required to function effectively and efficiently in the society. Society is an institution of humans.

According to the Universal Dictionary, ‘a society is a group of people who have joined together to pursue a common interest or goal, association, organization, community”, and transition is a moment of change or transformation from one phase, location or position to another. According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, transition is a change or shift from one state, subject, place, etc. to another.”
Combining the keywords, transition from the school to the society is a significant stage of transformation in the life of an individual from the school system to the outside world where they are to transfer and apply all the theories learnt for several years in the educational institution to meet the needs and demands of the society.

Furthermore, the realities of this shift from one phase to another which originally started from kindergarten – nursery – primary – secondary to the tertiary level that may even go beyond including the postgraduate levels is a whole lot of dynamics for the individual as they get to interfere with life outside the four walls of the university and the school structure to a new form of life.

The realities often appear overwhelming and extremely different from what the current graduates who are not well prepared for the new realities have always pictured. Imagine being induced with the mentality that all one has to do in school is make a first class or a second class upper distinction, build connections, and engage in some co-curricular activities. But, one graduate only to discover that the job opportunities out there are limited, and the labour market is highly competitive. The outside world then becomes more complex and unpredictable than expected.

More so, the realities from the school to the society includes automatic shift to a full blown adulthood, independence, pursuing financial breakthrough, responsibility, pressure to succeed, life lessons, acquiring a sense of belongingness, stage of identity and rediscovery, starting life afresh with a new slate, the pressure from the society and the need for growth.
Foremost, among the different realities for individuals after school is the undeniable tendency to assume full blown adulthood.

They become adults beyond their ages, to the ones in full practice. They no longer have their parents’ full support and consent as it used to be. They now have a whole lot of freedom at disposal with the responsibility to determine what to do with it. They start their lives afresh that what they used to be in school does not matter anymore in the real world; their political positions, their outstanding awards and charismatic honours. Life becomes a new adventure for them.

In addition to that, the reality of independence and financial breakthrough dawn on them as their aspirations and focus in life has change from the regularity of attending classes and passing exams to hustling tirelessly to earn a living as their parents will no longer be there to fend for their financial needs and sustenance.
Also, they are entitled to a whole lot of responsibility that have detrimental consequences if neglected. For instance, in the school if you don’t attend classes and miss tests or exams, the effect is immediate failure but in the society where you manage to get a job with duties assigned to it, if one skips days of work without prior notice to the organization, it can attract severe consequences like deduction from salary or being fired from the workplace.

Apart from that, any offense in school comes with trivial punishments, the worst of the penalty can be expulsion from school, but in the real world, they are certain offenses with life lessons like ending up in jail or a tarnished reputation.

Another reality the individuals encounter outside school is finding a sense of belongingness, establishing and rediscovering their identity. For some individuals, they are saddened with the realization that what they studied in school cannot get them a good job. The smart ones become creative to explore other spheres of life, and make a way for themselves that will be acceptable in the society.

Lastly, the pressure from the society to become successful when you see your mates that are already doing well for themselves, the pressure to settle down and need to remain valuable, reputable and relevant.

In conclusion, the transition from the school to the society should be well emphasized in school with adequate enlightenment on how to prepare and navigate through the after school life due to the fact that it is a delicate time for individuals.

On NUESA-UI TV Management; Suspicious Movement, A Need for Clarity

By: The Scribe

Fellow Readers, Dearest Educators, Intellectual Nation Builders, Respected Individuals, Student Leaders, Friends of the Press, Fans of Assesa Press; It’s pertinent to state at the onset of this light-seeker touch of the stance and importance embedded in the birth of today’s devotion. As it becomes a responsibility to point out when situations seem to be driving on the wrong path, it is likewise of the same weight to ensure there comes into effect a compass of direction.

In a sense, this editorial piece is simply a tool meant to create awareness and raise the focus of necessary stakeholders to a recurring issue. It should be well noted that it isn’t in any way a medium to put a halt motion towards a progressive movement. Charging at the situation in this early stage will be tagged as a swift response when the duty calls. Carefully, the lens of this piece shall point out some factors as it relates to the NUESA-TV Management.

Overtime, the context of who owns a WhatsApp TV has been a bone of contention. This is due to the fact that most Public Relations Officers (PRO) have always manipulated the management and use of this platform. These individuals are of the notion that the whole idea of the WhatsApp Tv is their initiative thereby seeing the growth of this platform in all thanks to their strategy.

Owing to the vice of a weak onset that fails to clarify and state what happens to the platform after the tenure of the PRO ends – also boiling down to transitioning, the platform disappears and again resurfaces with the bearing of another identity. This simply translates to that a platform once owned by a department or faculty association is now transformed to a privately owned property.

Suspicious Movements

The first ever NUESA WhatsApp Tv that came into light during the Nicholas Led-administration under the office of the PRO – PKA Teejay – went into a sudden extinction after his tenure elapsed. Only to later on realize the fact that the WhatsApp Tv is now privately run by him with the identity “The Tv”. This was possible as no set agreement was in place as to who originally owns the platform between the PRO and NUESA.

In another case study, the widely followed AFAS TV of the Faculty of Arts which was under the watch of the PRO – Olusola Oluwaseun (PKA Active Don) – last session also took the same turn. It is now alarming to see the highly rated AFAS TV turned to a privately and monetarily run CAMPUS STATION. One tends to ask if this particular idea of enveloping the property of a faculty/department birthed before their introduction of the platform or after.

In the third and final case study, the story of how UI’SU Tv of last session was suspended due to issues relating to clarity, proper documentation of its transactions (revenue/expenses) and ownership of the platform. Topical issues raised then to prevent the WhatsApp Tv from being subjected to personal property later on escalated. The Tv, as most of us now know, has been transformed – privately – to be OMA PR. In these 3 case studies, one thing is common; the context of who owns the WhatsApp Tv and what happens to it when the tenure of the PRO ends was not in any way defined.

In the past three sessions under 3 different PROs, NUESA has operated on three different WhatsApp Tv, one for every session. Critically, when a WhatsApp Tv is formed, the PRO/handler gains mobile contact of prospective viewers – which are contacts gained through the office of NUESA PRO and not because of his name or identity. The contact of such prospective viewers technically becomes the property of NUESA/Office of NUESA PRO and not the PRO’s personal contact gains. Refusing to drop such contacts after a tenure technically means eloping with the association’s property.

Not digressing, it’s an issue knowing for every session in the last 3 sessions, NUESA has operated different WhatsApp TVs. This means the handing-over session has failed to take proper effect in this sense. And for the past two sessions, Educators’ contacts gained through the formation of these platforms have been eloped. In concise line, there ought to be a proper transitioning of the existing WhatsApp TV to the incoming PRO. Afterall, this can only be proved impossible if it has been impossible for NUESA to make use of the same Secretariat for quite some years now.

Need For Clarity

After the launching of the current WhatsApp Tv – THE NUESA TV – on Sunday, October 22, 2023, it has become a necessity to raise some topical issues to the hearing of those concerned for the purpose of preventing the same old story from repeating itself. When asked of what happens to the platform once his tenure ends, the PRO – Amuletiko Pelumi (Pelz) – made it known that there is no clear agreement ‘YET’ on what befalls the platform once his tenure ends thereby adding that a clear agreement will occur when the time comes – at the end of his tenure.

The fact that it took close to 7 weeks to set up the WhatsApp Tv gave enough timeline to work on the transition. To avoid the stories of old, there is a need to put in place a clear statement on what happens to the platform once his tenure is over even before the WhatsApp Tv kick starts its operation. In this light, it should be known better that documentation/agreement comes first before operation.

Importantly, according to the budget presented by the PRO to the 12th Assembly of FLC on Saturday, September 2, 2023, it was stated clearly that the budget to run The NUESA Tv is still undecided (In this shape, budget of such is expected to be data cost, airtime and other logistics). According to the PRO, then, he made mention that the cost of running the WhatsApp Tv is left undecided as preparation on setting-up the Tv is still on.

By the foregoing, it is expected that the PRO will come back to the 12th Assembly, present his budget as relating to the cost of running the WhatsApp Tv, the context of its revenues, proper documentations of necessary things and the approval of the FLC to even kick start the WhatsApp TV’s operation. As it’s quite glaring that the WhatsApp Tv has been in operation without setting clarifications and understanding every mode of its operation, there is a need to revert back changes, set things right and do the necessity!

There should also be the discussion on what happens to the SIM Card currently in use once his tenure ends. It is also quite close to certainty that the current SIM Card being used for the WhatsApp Tv is likely to have been registered in the name of the PRO. So as to likewise avoid old stories on this, there is need for clarity.

In an academic setting of this shape, things ought to be done the way they ought to be done. It is of strong notice that this article calls on the intervention of the NUESA FLC 12th Assembly under the authority of Rt. Hon. Isaac Boluwatife to make important changes. Simply, there should be proper documentation of the Tv’s afterlife once the current PRO tenure ends, presentation of a clear budget on the Tv, explanation to the FLC on if he intends to generate revenues through the platform and how it will be done, and then get an official approval on the commencement of operation

This EDITORIAL ‘TRUSTS’ the 12th Assembly, NUESA FLC, to do the NECESSARY!

The Unseen Battles of a Student: A Journey of Tears and Triumphs

By:Ayinke

The life of a student is a relentless battle, one filled with heart-wrenching struggles and hard-fought victories. The journey through each semester is a rollercoaster of emotions, a test not just of intellectual prowess, but also of resilience and determination. It’s a story of tears and triumphs that often goes unnoticed.

The first year of university is a time filled with anticipation, excitement, and adventure. But lurking beneath the surface is the silent war that students wage in their pursuit of excellence. These wars are in grades depending on the institution you find yourself, if you find yourself in You High ( UI) like we fondly call it and then proceed to be in the faculty of education and our blessed department Arts and Social Sciences Education you definitely know that you have found yourself amidst weapons but we hope  they don’t prosper.

We sacrifice the joys of youth for the sake of our studies, for we know that “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” The first semester exams mark the beginning of our struggle, and though they may appear as moments of triumph to the outside world, we bear the scars of a thousand battles that led to this point.

As the second semester approaches, the intensity of the battle amplifies. Sleep becomes a distant memory, distractions seem to multiply, and peer pressure threatens to lead us astray. This time, our battle leaves us with more than just emotional wounds; we carry fractures, bruises, and torn spirits. Yet, we endure, driven by the burning desire for success. We stand battered and bruised but proud, our silent battles concealed beneath a veneer of triumph.

With each passing year, our academic journey continues. We face the perils of studying in dimly-lit rooms, fend off relentless mosquitoes, and endure the gnawing pangs of hunger. The constant cries of “Sapa”and the weight of overwhelming assignments press down on our shoulders. Each semester presents a new set of challenges, and we tackle them head-on. However, society seems oblivious to the struggles we face; they are only concerned with the final outcome—the exams and the grades.

The weight we bear extends far beyond the textbooks we carry. Yet, when people inquire about our well-being, their questions revolve around the weight of our academic burdens, not the emotional burdens we carry. Our pain remains concealed, overshadowed by the relentless pursuit of academic excellence.

As the semester unfolds, the emotional toll on students becomes painfully evident. The pressure to excel in exams reaches its peak, and anxiety becomes a constant companion. The fear of failure haunts our every move, and stress consumes us. Balancing lectures, part-time jobs, and a semblance of a social life becomes an impossible juggling act.

The looming spectre of exams adds an extra layer of intensity to our already arduous routines. Sleepless nights are spent poring over textbooks, notes, and past assignments. The library becomes our sanctuary, and caffeine our faithful companion. The weight of expectations bears down upon us, reminding us that the hopes and dreams of our families, friends, and society are intertwined with our success.

Amidst the sleepless nights, the anxiety, and the pressure, a flicker of determination keeps us going. We find strength in the bonds of our fellow students who understand our struggles. We share notes, exchange tips, and offer one another emotional support. It is in these moments that the resilience of the student community shines brightly.

As the semester nears its end, the emotional rollercoaster intensifies. The anxiety and fear of exams are replaced by a glimmer of hope and anticipation. We hope that our tireless efforts will pay off, that we will emerge victorious once more. The exam hall becomes the final battlefield, where we lay it all on the line, armed with the knowledge and resilience we’ve gained throughout the semester.

In the end, we emerge from the exam hall, victorious or not. The weight of the battles we fought remains hidden from view, but it has molded us into who we are today. Our struggles and triumphs are etched into our character, creating a tapestry of resilience, determination, and personal growth.

In conclusion, the life of a student is a journey marked by unseen battles, a tale of tears and triumphs. The world may fixate on academic achievements, but the emotional struggles we face are equally significant. It’s essential to acknowledge and support the emotional challenges that students endure, recognizing that the battles fought behind the scenes are as significant as the victories celebrated in the spotlight. Our journey is one of tears and triumphs, and it’s time the world sees and appreciates the whole story.

Growth mindset: A mindset Beyond Academic Performance

By: Seilatolaide

Students’ primitive aim is to actualize the set goal of great academic performance, a mental construct around the laid down goals that drive the scale of striving around to meet up with these aims. This sends many students into tracing the line that leads to necessary helpful information which not only guides but enhances a successful performance.

A mind which is set beyond not  just the  actualization of academic aims  serves  as the embodiment filled with glitters of self growth and high performances. This call to the edge of vibrant notification of grabbing the site that sends for the growth and development needed.

What does a growth mindset implies? It is reflectively a growth to find oneself improving over an earlier in-touch skills, but hardly are  students aware  that self growth can not be restrictively acquired through only academic excellent performances which is a milestone to other human growth. Changes around mental, intelligence and critical involvement can be tailored towards the effect academics have shown with interaction, this earns academics the status as the milestone to effective self growth.

Growth mindset involves the belief that one can discover their talent and develop skills alongside those talents. Also, it is significantly an innovative ability to bring changes not only to self but also to society. These talents and skills vitally add to societal development whereby it is applied to  problem solving and growth of such society.

The importance of co-curriculum activities can not  be underestimated as it manifests high linkage to the development of a high growth mindset. Students are given the opportunity to join different associations in the school independence if their interests, skills and abilities. These serve as an avenue for discovery of hidden talents.

Students have been able to develop public speaking skills through this mode while some other activities include sports, music, writing, and singing. The engagement of students in these activities have a pace towards a growth mindset which promotes development in all ramifications. Students have been exposed to different skills which could promote the ability to take calculative risk and accept failure as a stepping stone.

One of the contributions the university has made towards this development includes the organization of seminars which covers the area of self growth  and self awareness. These seminars give outstanding information about self growth and developments. One of the attempts the department of Arts and Social Sciences Education has made towards this is the organization of an online seminar on growth mindset. Most individual  self growth and development are yet to be obtained based on inability to access information that awakens the mind towards the rail of the growth. The growth of an individual is a foundation towards the growth of a nation.

There are various processes towards developing a growth mindset which includes scrolling through one’s internal mindset which is the first successful way to develop a growth mindset and this comes with various internal dialogue that brings about the discovery, followed by a talk back which focuses the mind on trying out interests which could bring a successful end.

Processing to practice which could start from school through various engagements and also reaction to failure. Then help can be gotten owing to the fact that  growth mindset can’t be done alone words of motivations and advices are needed to reach the goal. Sufficient provision has been made by the school to meet students need of advise which pave the way for organization of different seminars in school covering the rightful development of a good growth mindset.

A growth mindset and the practical aspect could be highly challenging as there are a lot around attaining that mindset but a scan through the effect will build the mind to acquire this as it has a lasting effect on individual self-growth and development beyond the knowledge acquired in the academics training.

Man Gat Chop: Living as a Student Amidst Hike in Food Prices

By: Ayinke
In the grand scheme of a university student’s life, there are a few sacred institutions, and the daily pilgrimage to the campus eatery is one of them. We’ve all been there, sitting at GSK, Archives, SBJ, or even our usually bountiful Tedder Cafe, gorging ourselves until we’re on the verge of a food coma. But let’s not kid ourselves – life as we know it has changed. The food we’ve grown accustomed to is now a distant memory, and my stomach, bless its rumbling heart, wept. You see, “Man has gat chop,” but the days of you don chop belleful are fading faster than last semester’s crush. Well I don find an alternative God bless Gifted Wolverine Cafe (Mellanby) for their Beans and bread everly coming through.

When news of the impending hike in meal prices circulated around campus a couple of weeks ago, it felt as if the very fabric of the universe might unravel. But alas, it was merely a tempest in a teapot. The cries to the Student Union and the enigmatic Sanjay were heard far and wide, but nothing really changed, much like the hike in cab fees – just more hullabaloo, less happening.

Before you jump to conclusions and pick sides, let’s take a closer look. Just as “man has gat chop,” food vendors and cab drivers also have to fend for their livelihoods. Did you ever stop to consider that these humble drivers and food vendors may have uni-bound kids? That’s right, even they are facing the same struggles we are. So when the economic situation deals them a tough hand, they do what any pragmatic warrior would do – they pass the burden onto us.

In the timeless quest for sustenance, humour might just be our secret sauce. So, let’s journey through this brave new world of student sustenance with a hint of jest and a dollop of wit, where “man has gat chop,” but the price has gone up, up, and away.

The Great Meal Migration
Picture this: It’s lunchtime, and you walk into GSK, hoping to find your favourite mouthwatering fried rice and jollof rice, you know how the smell can swallow the whole of Bello now. But hold your horses, my friend. That plate of deliciousness now costs more than usual. SBJ suddenly has undergone a transformation, not unlike a chameleon changing colours to blend into its surroundings. What used to be your trusty spot for affordable meals now looks like a pop-up Michelin-star restaurant, oh boy, you have gat to pay for the luxury treatment plus picture spot SBJ has now oo, Awoites can relate.

let’s call him bros GSK Captain Culinary, he must have attended a masterclass on pricing while we weren’t looking. Suddenly, a humble plate of rice and stew comes with a side of sticker shock. As we contemplate our new reality, we have to wonder if the university is secretly training future gourmet chefs. Or perhaps they’re grooming us for a future in finance, as we now need to perform complex calculations just to determine if we can afford a meal or go back to our kitchenettes and stoves. But university stress can be tiring to cook at times.

The Food Vendor’s Dilemma
Now, let’s turn the spotlight to the real heroes behind the scenes – the food vendors. They may not wear capes, but they serve up sustenance to starving students, which is pretty heroic in our books. These brave souls have had to navigate the labyrinthine intricacies of supply and demand, inflation, and a global food crisis. They’ve done their homework and realized that when the price of tomatoes skyrockets, so does the cost of your beloved jollof rice.

Our dear food vendors have become financial strategists, and the pricing of each meal now involves more calculations than your last calculus exam. Not to mention, they’ve become masters at predicting which exotic ingredient will suddenly become a luxury item. Have you ever seen a chef expertly juggle spices while explaining the intricacies of the stock market? Well, meet your campus food vendor.

Our Cabby Men and Keke Men
Now, let’s not forget about our friends in the transportation business – the cab drivers. They ferry us to and fro, rain or shine, often with a smile and some good-natured banter. They’ve got families too, and those kids need an education, which can be just as costly as the latest iPhone. So when the price of fuel takes a hike, so does your cab fare.

These drivers, who are also part-time philosophers and occasional comedians, bear the burden of breaking the news about the impending fare increase. You’ll be cruising along, engaged in a lively debate about last night’s football match when, out of the blue, your driver hits you with the news. The fare is going up, and he delivers the verdict with the solemnity of a judge at a murder trial.

The Art of Student Survival
In this brave new world of student sustenance, we must adapt, improvise, and overcome. Gone are the days when you could order that extra serving of suya without a second thought. Instead, we’ve become connoisseurs of the cafeteria, seeking out the best deals like a seasoned detective tracking down a slippery suspect.

We’ve mastered the art of strategic eating. Breakfast is now brunch, and we skip lunch to justify indulging in a sumptuous dinner. And if all else fails, instant noodles have become our trusty sidekicks and our life saving groceries and floating berries, saving us from the brink of gastronomic despair.
Remember, “Man has gat chop,” but sometimes that chop might just be a pocket-friendly plate of fried rice from a street vendor.

In conclusion, as we navigate these turbulent culinary waters, let’s not forget that the food vendors and cab drivers are simply trying to make ends meet, much like the rest of us. So, while the price hikes may make our wallets weep, perhaps a little understanding and a touch of humour can help us endure the trials and tribulations of student life with a smile on our faces. After all, “Man has gat chop,” and he’s determined to savour every bite, even if it costs a bit more.

The Grooming of Freshers and Orientation Activities: The Foundation to Success

By Seilatolaide

Surrounding the different compartments bringing about a collective action to foster the achievement of drilling a firm foundation to fashion a beautiful colour of the Freshers, several orientations and Fresher’s welcome have been opted to amiably with the sense of germinating an excellent seed in a fertile soil.

Questions could be asked around the continuity of Freshers welcome and orientation right from the beginning of the semester extending towards the ending edge. This is a curiosity filled with wonderful answer which is to retain the honour of the university and ensure the maximum achievements of the laid primary goals of the newly admitted students.

Several units ranging from the faculty, departments to religious association and bodies have made adequate arrangement and organization of Freshers welcome and orientation. In the University of Ibadan, the faculty of Education has successfully conducted her Fresher’s welcome and orientation which serve as a ground of reminder to students of their motives and various steps to take towards climbing the ladder of success.

The DCC of Arts and Social Sciences department, on the 17th of October 2023, approved the Fresher’s welcome budget prior to the organization of Freshers welcome and orientation. This Freshers welcome and orientation have been held highly with a great importance which can be perceived tight down to the religious organization groups. The Teacher Education Christian Fellowship (TECF) organized its Freshers welcome situated at Mellanby SCR to bring a reminder of the spiritual importance of students on their road to achieving their goals which can be achieved with necessary strategies including the maintenance of good health.

This implies that the importance of Freshers’ welcome and orientation should never be underestimated as it is profound with a huge extended root that inspires and motivates the students towards walking in the right way to success and picking the right choice to align in the right way.

The Freshers welcome and orientation brings students together and promote some form of connectivity and networking amidst new students. Students meet through this mode and work together as a team to meet up with ladies down goals of being a college students, it also serves as an opportunity towards meeting with mentors who are well instilled and experienced students ready to put the young one through the way they traced to acquiring their status of success at their recent level.

Freshers are new members of the school who probably have little or are totally naive about the culture of the school they have found themselves in. They need guidance who would help them in their journey to success. Notably, every Fresher can easily meet up with someone to help, probably due to differences in personality.

But the avenue of Freshers welcome and orientation serve as their easiest way to promote connectivity and be easily guided. Sense of belonging is one of the characteristic of Freshers welcome and orientation every students from various section and sub section find themselves together and interact to achieve the same goal of being a students and it’s a mode to transmit knowledge on the way of life of the school to the students so they can adapt to the new environment they are to find themselves in the next 4 to 6 years of schooling.

The extension level of Freshers welcome and orientation is to promote reminders at various weeks of the resumption to prevent a mislead and diversion from the ultimate goal of being a student. This, thus, awakens the students and results into excellent performance at the end of the semester/session.

Balancing the Books and Beliefs: Navigating Student Life and Religion

By: Ayinke

In the ever-evolving journey of life, the intersection of education and faith is a crossroad where many students find themselves. It is a complex and often challenging path to navigate. The decision to either prioritize one’s studies over religious devotion or maintain a balance between the two can significantly impact the course of a student’s life. This article delves into the complexities of managing academic pursuits alongside religious beliefs and argues that finding a harmonious balance is key to a fulfilling and successful student life.

The Unavoidable Dilemma

As students, one is often faced with the dilemma of what to pay attention to. I have heard this saying several times on campus that your purpose or primary assignment on campus is your grades but likewise what are the grades when God is left out? Most academic pursuit is driven by dreams of a promising future, financial stability, and personal growth but still the question remains who crowns all these efforts? In the face of demanding academic schedules, exams, assignments, and deadlines, students often find themselves immersed in a whirlwind of coursework. However, this intense academic commitment can sometimes lead to a dilemma concerning their religious beliefs and practices.

It’s not uncommon for students to grapple with the question of whether they should prioritize their studies over their faith. This dilemma can be especially pronounced when academic commitments clash with religious obligations, such as prayer times, fasting during religious holidays, or the need to attend religious events.

The Fear of Neglect

In the just concluded Freshers’ Welcome TECF, the speaker made the essentiality of religious belief known. In his words, religion is not a thing to neglect in pursuit of academic excellence as God is to be put at the forefront of every of our endeavors.

He further probes the minds of students that for everyone in school, there is a purpose for why God put you there. So, while you run around searching for grades, pursuing vain things you should remember that one day we did give an account of our journey. Funnily enough, we won’t be asked for a CGPA.

So, you may stop to think about it ” Should I focus on my academics alone and neglect my religious obligations?”
And am I trying to say neglect academics and face my religious belief? God forbid that I say such. What I am implying is just below.

Finding Balance

Balancing academic commitments and religious beliefs is undoubtedly a challenging task, but it is not an impossible one. The key to navigating this complex terrain lies in finding a harmonious balance that allows a student to excel academically while nurturing their spiritual well-being.

1. Time Management: The foundation of balancing education and religion is effective time management. Creating a schedule that accounts for both academic and religious commitments is crucial. Allocate specific times for studying, attending classes, and also for religious practices and activities.

2. Seeking Support: Students should reach out to their academic institutions and professors, if necessary, to discuss any potential conflicts between academic requirements and religious obligations. Most institutions are understanding and willing to accommodate students’ needs to ensure they can uphold their faith.

3. Prioritization: Prioritize tasks based on their importance and deadlines. This approach ensures that essential academic requirements are met while allowing time for religious practices without neglecting either aspect of life.

4. Community and Support Systems: Being part of a religious community or student group that shares similar beliefs can provide emotional support and opportunities to engage in religious activities together. These communities can also help students cope with the pressures of academia.

5. Self-Care: Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is vital. Regular self-care practices, such as exercise, meditation, or simply spending time with loved ones, can help alleviate stress and improve overall well-being.

The Consequences of Neglect

It is essential to acknowledge the consequences of neglecting either one’s studies or religious beliefs. Neglecting one’s academic responsibilities can result in poor academic performance, missed opportunities, and even financial instability. On the other hand, neglecting religious beliefs may lead to feelings of spiritual emptiness, guilt, and a sense of disconnection from one’s faith community.

The reality is that both aspects of life are significant, and the neglect of either can have long-lasting consequences. Therefore, it is essential to strive for equilibrium, as it is not merely a matter of choosing one over the other, but of finding a way to integrate both successfully.

Success Stories of Balance

There are numerous real-life examples of individuals who have successfully balanced their academic pursuits and religious beliefs. These individuals demonstrate that it is possible to excel in both areas of life.

Malala Yousafzai, the Nobel laureate and education advocate, is a prime example of someone who combined her devotion to her faith and a relentless pursuit of education. Despite facing adversity and threats to her life, she remained committed to her studies and her faith, becoming a symbol of empowerment and determination.

Similarly, right on this ground of UI, I have seen presidents of fellowships, students in various arms of religious activities ace their academics although I would not say there are not others who didn’t do well but remember religious activities isn’t the problem, balancing it is the problem.
With determination, time management, and a commitment to one’s faith, it is possible to excel in both academia and religious pursuits.

A Fulfilling and Successful Student Life

Ultimately, the pursuit of knowledge and one’s faith should complement each other rather than compete. A fulfilling and successful student life should not entail choosing between these two vital aspects of a person’s identity. Instead, it should involve harmoniously integrating them to create a life that is rich in both academic and spiritual experiences.

Students who manage to find this balance often report a sense of peace, contentment, and a strong sense of purpose. Their academic achievements become a reflection of their dedication and hard work, while their faith deepens, providing them with guidance and solace during challenging times.

In conclusion, the dilemma of balancing education and religion is a common and challenging one for many students. However, it is crucial to recognize that both are essential aspects of a fulfilling and successful life. With effective time management, support systems, and a commitment to self-care, students can navigate this complex terrain and find a harmonious balance that allows them to thrive both academically and spiritually. Balancing the books and beliefs is not an easy task, but it is a worthwhile endeavor that can lead to a rewarding and purposeful student life.

UI’SU Congress: A Gathering of Numbers or A Congregation of Impacts?

By: Fagbemi Joshua

In this citadel of learning where the spirit of Aluta, like they say, is not on the level or same degree when compared to that of some institution, the context of slugging matters out with the school management becomes impossible. Those who have been bathed and washed by the waters and soap of this terrain prior to their entry to the university sometimes find it so annoying to see the turns and play of events when it comes to battling with school management for student rights.

Would you blame any? In a situation where the predecessors made no move as per the discussions and likewise seeing the kind of scapegoat those who tried such have been subjected to is enough to kill every spirit that propels the energy to raise your head and speak forth against the school authority. Still, those who have been placed to a position where they are expected to shift some tables and make some moves for students’ sake, if such fails to materialize any of this, it is then safe to compel and tag such as incapable.

The university’s Students’ Unionism is in its cold state – no doubt about that – in the sense that they are typically a figure of representation and in some style mainly serve as a link between the university management and students. This can be widely seen in the way and manner responses to questions raised are being answered. It was in a form that simply says, “Don’t worry, we’ll table your request to our Bosses at the administration level for proper deliberation and decision”. The deliberation is only possible if there will even be any sort of consideration.

Thankfully, a student raised a question by asking the Students’ Union leaders of the congress in a bid to get students’ opinions on issues affecting them and negotiate with the school management or demand from the school management? This question as well raised the suspicion of what tends to happen to every resolution reached at the congress, tabling them to the point if they’ll be subjected to negotiations with the school management or make demands from the school management.

Let’s make some explanations and distinctions. When you negotiate with someone, it is like you are prepared to settle for some percentage of what the other person wants but also want to bring in your own interest to the table. Negotiation is just simply making both parties better off from a particular issue. This interprets that if the UI’SU’s plan is to negotiate matters with the school management, that means some of the areas that are not favorable to students will be finally settled for in some way.

On the other hand, when you make demands, you are stating what you want from a discussion and at the same time compelling the other party to go by your demands and accept your recommendations. In this sense, both parties still gain but not at the same proportion. The party who makes the demands gains more than the other party who is being compelled to accept. As a student body who have been vested with the will and power to be a spokesperson and representation for all students of the university, these are expected.

At the congress held on Saturday, October 14, 2023, which was the first in about 5 years, lots of expectations were placed on it. It at first looked like a failed program when the 500 people who are meant to make a quorum that officially stamps the beginning of the congress lost their Aluta voice. A Congress stipulated to begin by 7am was dragged to 10 before it finally kick started. The congress even started without getting the number of people – 500 – meant to kick start the congress which then put a question of the congress’ validity.

Is the Congress a gathering of numbers or a congregation called to make impacts? Series of topical issues were raised during the congress ranging from epileptic water and electricity supply across halls of residences, the payment of lap and studio fee, the extra charge on students for bank fee within the campus, the utility fee saga, increase in price of food in cafeterias to the transportation fee issue. These are issues that have been affecting students and call for an urgent intervention before things turn array.

The most dramatic of all has be be the studio and lab fee where students have been compelled to pay a sum of #10,000 and #20,000 for non-Fresher and Freshers respectively. Some faculties have even gone to the extent of stopping students who are yet to make the payment from engaging in practicals. It is the belief that when you make payment for the funding of a particular concept, what is literally expected from such a stance is improvement – a show of an upgrade from what has been in effect.

Due to the lack of trust – which originated from previous scenes – students typically see studio/lab fee as a way of extortion. Funny enough, some departments even claimed that they did not have anything called studio talkless of having access to any. Considering the situation of the country’s economy, paying a huge amount for a cause who’s impact or manifestations will not be seen is like deliberately throwing your money into a lake of water.

The introduction of a utility fee for all students has been questioned when it comes to showing forth the materializations of the fee. Again, paying #20,000, it is expected that there will be an improvement in both the supply of electricity and availability of water. Frankly speaking, reverse has been the colour of the case. Some even claimed that the situation tends to turn out worse than before. It is undoubtedly believed that when an increment is being introduced, the quality of the context is certainly compelled to increase.

To all these varying issues, the bottom line tends to question what will happen to the yearnings of students after the congress. No one even knows if the numbers of those present for the congress matched up to 500, this is very important as a number below 500 means that the congress is not valid and all discussions might end up locked within the air and wall frame.

Another concern as raised earlier is what happens to all opinions and deliberations reached during the congress. Will they finally get to the appropriate authority for consideration? Will there even be any room for consideration of the resolutions and demands? Will it be substantial enough to say we’ve been left in a confused state where we have no choice than to pay some bills simply because we have to pay?

Come the next few months, it shall be recorded in the history books that a congress was held which failed to yield results – that’s if it doesn’t. Students are eagerly awaiting feedback from the Students’ Union and it is high time the Union proved the congress is a congregation of impacts and not just a gathering of presence and number.

Art of Leadership and Public Speaking: Skills for Successful Career as Educator

By Seilatolaide
As educators, we are embedded and well trained in the zone of being good future leaders, who direct and inculcate passion and motivation in followers. The most prominent expectation from an educator is to serve as a model to the students, this goes beyond the classroom and tallies around being kept in a position that requires the exhibition of a good leadership skill to attain the laid down objective. This emphasizes the utmost importance of leadership skill followed by good public speaking.
A teacher passes knowledge, morals, values and attitudes to students through communication and portraiture of such a passed attitude. This enhances a proper emulation of such character by the students. A good public speaking skill is wrapped around as teachers take students through lectures. Extending beyond the classroom level is at the seminar or symposium level where presentation could be required.
A teacher with a good public speaking skill will exhibit various characteristics which includes a prepared state of mind of the audience to be addressed. This eventually clears the space for little or no mistakes in the presentation. Furthermore, a good public speaker will portray the spirit of confidence to face a large number of people with various judgments and personality. The impact of this skill has helped educators build a successful career and achieve their goals around education.
Leadership skills and public speaking skills are not mutually exclusive because a hand tool to a leadership skill is communication. A leader will instill motivation, passion and enthusiasm into the follower through the tool of communication. Therefore, a good speaking skill adds a spark to achieving the aim of the leader. A leader whose words can’t be grasped will be left to a lane of futility.
The area that serves as a training ground for expertise in leadership and public speaking skills is the school. The school is an institution where various organized public speaking skills competitions are constituted, this helps in developing the potential great future speaker and bring about a discovery of talent. This inclusion goes far to the university level where students therefore, represent their schools to radiate the honour of their various higher institutions.
In the prestigious University of Ibadan, one of those leadership and public speaking training was organized. The innate potential summit was staged in a bid to build future educators with the process that leads to the ability of being a good public speaker that starts by leading oneself.
Educators are highly looked upon, as the immediate societal growth lies in their hands. They are privileged with the power to change the society with the knowledge they pass and example they show to the younger ones. The huge basket of demands and expectations on them certainly requires educators to imbibe and train the leadership and public speaking skill.

Co-curricular Activities on Campus and their Manifestations

By: SeilatOlaide
Co curriculum activities are those activities outside the classroom engaged by students, these activities are mainly stress releasing activities as students are passionately involved in them to stimulate a better brain functioning and therefore, complement the academics curriculum. Many students come to school with the foremost mentality of tracing the book reading route without any concern for co curricular activities. Little do they know that a balance in social life and academics bring an excellent performance. A balance in the sense that academics is taken as the ultimate priority and likewise engaging in social engagement. Various activities that are regarded as co curriculum includes sport, press, literary and debate, music.
Students benefit a lot from co curriculum activities and eventually find their lifetime earning around those activities. Some students realized their passion for a particular activity would help them strive well in life and this saves their cross to efficient use of those accumulated skills from those activities for a successful life.
There are various co curricular activities to be engaged by students in the University of Ibadan. These include sports like volleyball, basketball, and football. Resulting from various engagements in football, students have been able to win awards ranging from the UISU Seal Cup to departmental and faculty based awards like the NUESA Dean’s Cup. People with passion for writing and journalism can join various Press organizations to build their writing skills and increase their passion for such. Feminist Strive: Equity or Equality?

By: Ayinke

Introduction
The feminist movement has been a powerful force for social change, advocating for the rights and empowerment of women for decades. While the ultimate goal of feminism is to achieve gender justice and equality, there has been ongoing debate within the movement about whether the focus should be on equity or equality. Both concepts are central to feminist discourse, but they approach gender justice from slightly different angles. In this article, we will explore the concepts of equity and equality in the context of feminism, examining their similarities, differences, and the ongoing strive for gender justice.

Understanding Equity and Equality
Before delving into the feminist perspective, it’s important to understand the fundamental differences between equity and equality. Equality refers to the state of being equal, especially in terms of rights, opportunities, and treatment. In the context of gender, equality would mean that men and women are treated exactly the same way, with no discrimination based on their gender. It assumes that treating everyone equally will lead to fairness.

On the other hand, Equity recognizes that individuals have different needs and circumstances. It involves providing individuals with what they need to reach a level playing field, even if it means treating them differently to achieve the same outcome. In the context of gender, equity acknowledges that historical disadvantages and discrimination may require tailored solutions to address disparities effectively.

Feminism and Equality
The concept of equality has long been a driving force within feminism. Many feminists argue that true gender justice can only be achieved when women are treated on par with men in all aspects of life. This perspective aims to eliminate discriminatory practices, stereotypes, and biases that have historically held women back.

One of the most significant achievements of the feminist movement in pursuit of gender equality has been the fight for legal rights. Over the years, feminists have worked tirelessly to secure equal rights for women in areas such as voting, education, and the workplace. These efforts have led to several significant legal changes

Feminism and Equity
While the pursuit of gender equality remains a core objective of feminism, many feminists argue that equity is a necessary complement to achieve true justice. They assert that simply treating men and women equally does not address the underlying systemic inequalities and historical disadvantages that women face.
Equity in feminism acknowledges that women have historically been marginalized and disadvantaged in various ways, including unequal pay, limited access to education, and underrepresentation in positions of power. To address these disparities, feminists advocate for policies and practices that provide women with the support and resources needed to level the playing field.
For example, affirmative action programs in education and employment are often seen as a means of promoting equity. These programs aim to address historical discrimination by giving preferential treatment to underrepresented groups, including women, to ensure they have equal access to opportunities.
The Intersection of Equity and Equality
It’s essential to recognize that equity and equality are not mutually exclusive concepts. In fact, they can and should coexist within the feminist movement. Achieving gender justice requires both treating women and men equally under the law and addressing the unique challenges and disadvantages that women have historically faced.
For instance, consider the issue of gender-based violence. Equality in this context would mean treating perpetrators of violence against women the same as perpetrators of violence against men. However, equity recognizes that women are disproportionately affected by gender-based violence and may require specialized support services and legal protections.
Similarly, in the workplace, achieving gender equity may involve policies such as paid parental leave and affordable childcare to support working mothers. These measures aim to address the specific challenges women often face in balancing career and family responsibilities while also advocating for equal pay and promotion opportunities.
The ongoing strive for gender justice within feminism, therefore, encompasses both equity and equality. It acknowledges that different situations may require different approaches, and the ultimate goal is to create a society where women are not only treated equally but are also empowered to overcome historical disadvantages.
Challenges and Criticisms
The debate between equity and equality within feminism is not without its challenges and criticisms. Some argue that focusing too much on equity can lead to reverse discrimination or create a sense of unfairness among those who do not benefit from affirmative action programs.
Additionally, the practical implementation of equity policies can be complex, and critics worry about potential unintended consequences. Striking the right balance between equity and equality is a complex task that requires careful consideration and ongoing evaluation.

Conclusion
In the pursuit of gender justice, feminism grapples with the concepts of equity and equality. While both are essential, they offer different approaches to addressing the historical disadvantages and discrimination that women have faced. Achieving true gender justice requires recognizing the unique challenges women encounter and tailoring solutions to address them while simultaneously advocating for equal treatment under the law.
The ongoing strive for gender justice within feminism should not be seen as an either/or debate between equity and equality but as a multifaceted approach that seeks to create a more just and equitable society for all genders. Ultimately, the goal remains the same: a world where women have the same opportunities, rights, and recognition as men, while acknowledging and addressing the systemic barriers they have historically faced.

Teaching Practice as A Core Avenue for Training Future Teachers

By Seilatolaide

Teaching practice which is one of the foremost programmes of education students has served as a main ground for building and producing excellent teachers who after exposure to various academic knowledge on how to effectively teach are then layed on practical track of physical readiness to be a teacher.

Similarly to industrial training in which  some faculties subject their students to which varies from 3 months to 4 months, teaching practice has helped in shaping student teachers’ ability to establish teaching skills and emulate effective 21st century methods of teaching. This is a training ground and it goes beyond the reflection of accumulated skills but is bound with an installment of belief and ethics which revolves around the profession.

The Faculty of Education students in the University of Ibadan resumed their teaching practices on September 25th to mark the completion of their 6 weeks training. During this period there were a lot of experiences each individual had and this extends their minds to the length of knowing the hidden importance of such a training.

Being a first timer as a student teacher could come with different emotions ranging from happiness, anxiety and frustration. The mind has to be set in the journey of being a nation building working 7am to 2pm to put a change into the society caved with moral, virtue, attitudes and manners.

The first week of teaching practice unfolded with meeting  a corporate teacher who is well grounded and  experienced in the teaching field and also ready to guide a student teacher in the process of instilling students with knowledge. The corporate teacher guides with lesson notes formation, classroom management, methods of teaching, building of confidence, and instructional materials. This guidance goes a long way to prepare the mind of student teachers and get them adjusted to the ability of effective teaching.

After weeks of teaching the student, several advantages would have been gained by the student teacher to effectively pass information to the students. There would have been a good teacher-student relationship and good classroom management. Also, the ability to effectively display and use the instructional material would have been firmly improved upon and a right exposure which takes students teacher to a level of understanding of how real life experience will promote a greater professional skill than a knowledge restriction coverage of being a teacher.

A journey through this process brings greater love for the profession sharpened with good communication skills, a growing public speaking ability marked by erased anxiety, self esteem and self confidence. Student teachers get familiarized with the professional in their future workplace; a sense of its operation and management would have been instilled ahead of what to meet in the future.

Movng to the middle of weeks, supervisors from the university would start paying their visit to various student teachers to supervise their ability  to teach, this visitation comes twice alongside necessary correction and explanation around how the student teacher can be more efficient in class. The student teacher gets himself ready to showcase the necessary skills he has accumulated during the few weeks of teaching experience to earn himself a rewardable mark which will eventually add to his academic performance.

A second visitation by the supervisor marks the entering of giving remarks on the student teacher performance with an assigned score. The expectation of external supervision is also one of those experiences student teachers get that come with appropriate checks of the student teacher’s ability and ensure their presence in their teaching schools.

This is a long training that comes with so many benefits like networking. It provides the opportunity to meet with various students on campus. These students offer benefits of experiences and exposure amongst one another and also to foster a good relationship and accomplishment of the major goal that bound them together.

Teaching practice has been practiced a long time before and all the necessary provision made has helped in shaping future nation builders in the right way to help students learn. A good teacher implies good student and good student thereby transforming the society and the nation to a worthwhile place.

Education: A PathWay to Light or A Tool to Eradicate Poverty?

By Iremide

Education is often hailed as a powerful weapon in the fight against poverty, and for good reason. It has the potential to break the cycle of poverty, empower individuals and communities, and pave the way for a brighter future. On another end, it has often been visualized as a pathway to light one’s journey.

To begin with, education equips individuals with the knowledge and skills they need to secure better employment opportunities. When people receive a quality education, they are more likely to find stable, well-paying jobs that provide them with a steady income. This economic stability is essential for lifting individuals and their families out of poverty. A well-educated workforce also attracts businesses and investments, fostering economic growth and reducing unemployment rates.

Moreover, education fosters a sense of empowerment and agency among individuals. It gives them the ability to make informed decisions about their lives, health, and finances. Education promotes critical thinking and problem-solving skills, enabling people to navigate complex challenges effectively. In turn, this empowers them to advocate for their rights, access social services, and participate actively in their communities.

Furthermore, education has a transformative impact on communities. When more people in a community are educated, the entire society benefits. Education promotes social cohesiveness, tolerance, and understanding among diverse groups. It reduces crime rates and contributes to a more stable and peaceful society. Additionally, educated individuals are more likely to engage in civic activities, such as voting and volunteering, which are vital for promoting social and political change.

In many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries, girls and women face significant barriers to accessing education. However, educating girls is a particularly effective strategy for poverty eradication. When girls are educated, they tend to marry later, have fewer children, and provide better care and education for their own children. This leads to smaller, healthier, and more educated families, breaking the cycle of intergenerational poverty.

Education also plays a crucial role in improving health outcomes. Educated individuals are more likely to have better health practices and access to healthcare services. They are more informed about nutrition, hygiene, and disease prevention. As a result, the overall health of a population improves, reducing healthcare costs and increasing productivity. Moreover, education can help in raising awareness about pressing health issues, such as HIV/AIDS, and promote behaviour change that can save lives.

In recent years, the digital revolution has underscored the importance of education in eradicating poverty. Access to information and communication technologies (ICTs) has become increasingly essential for economic participation and social inclusion. Education provides individuals with the digital literacy skills needed to harness the opportunities presented by the digital age. It enables them to access online learning resources, find remote work opportunities, and connect with a global community.

However, it is crucial to recognize that the impact of education on poverty eradication is not automatic. Several challenges must be addressed to maximize its potential. First and foremost, there is a need for equitable access to education. Disparities in access based on gender, socioeconomic status, and geographic location must be eliminated. This requires targeted policies and investments in infrastructure, teacher training, and scholarships for marginalized populations.

Quality of education is equally important as access. Education systems must provide relevant, up-to-date curricula and effective teaching methods. Teachers play a central role in delivering quality education, so investing in their training and professional development is essential. Moreover, education should be inclusive and culturally sensitive, respecting the diverse backgrounds and needs of learners.

Additionally, education systems should adapt to the changing demands of the job market. This includes promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education to prepare individuals for the growing number of tech-related careers. Lifelong learning should also be encouraged, as the pace of technological change requires individuals to continuously update their skills.

In conclusion, education is undeniably a powerful weapon in the battle against poverty. It equips individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to secure better employment, empowers them to make informed decisions, and fosters social cohesion and civic engagement. Education’s impact extends beyond individuals, benefiting entire communities and societies.

To maximize its potential, efforts must focus on ensuring equitable access, improving the quality of education, and adapting to the evolving demands of the modern world. By investing in education, we can pave the way for a future where poverty becomes a thing of the past.

Goals are important in any association and even with an individual person, when an organization is established, it possesses a vision and mission which binds a common view of what the organization is set for. How Low Hall Facilities Have Been Affecting Uites Over The Years

By: Eniola Oluwamuyiwa (Enny’s Blog)

After students gain admission into the University of Ibadan, they are allocated to certain halls of residence. Yet, even though every fresh student has automatic access to accommodation, they don’t enjoy the standard level of accommodation facility they deserve as students of the prestigious first and best university in the country. Within all these circumstances, accommodation fees keep skyrocketing from time to time.

The issue with accommodation in the university begins with room allocation. Rooms meant to be shared by two or three persons are shared by four. As if that’s enough, there are not sufficient double bunks to create space which makes it difficult at first to cope for occupants of these rooms. Another major issue with the accommodation in the university is poor toilet facilities. In different halls, most toilets and bathrooms don’t have a functioning water system which has as well encouraged some students to manage toilet facilities poorly.

Furthermore, periodical lack of water is also a phenomenon that has been affecting students in UI hostels over the years. Even though water is a natural element, they still struggle to have access to it. On mornings when they ought to be preparing for class, many of them wait in long queues hoping to get water to bathe. Sometimes, they don’t eventually get access to borehole water which they’ll have to draw water from available wells.

The role of electricity in students’ daily lives can’t be understated. Yet, they struggle to find the perfect place to charge their gadgets when electrical issues surface in the halls of residence. Some even go as far as reaching off-campus which is rampant during examination periods. This is because most of them rely on the slides or documents on their phone to study since we live in an internet age.

Even as freshers have automatic access to hostel accommodation, it’s not the same for staylites. In fact, a larger percentage of staylites stay off campus either because there are not enough rooms in the hostels or the facilities are not of quality. As a result, many struggle with exorbitant transportation costs since not all of them are always lucky enough to get accommodation near  school areas. What about finalists? Despite being in their final year, they don’t enjoy accommodation facilities that are worthy of them.

With all that’s been said, the school management needs to find a long-lasting solution to the accommodation issues on campus. Some of the ideal solutions they can adopt are to build more hostels on campus and improve the facilities of the existing ones. This will enable more students to get accommodation on campus and improve their standard of living which can subsequently motivate them to excel in their academics.

Engaging in Extracurricular Activities as a Uite, Gain Worthy or Distractions?

By: Ayinke the skinny girl

Extracurricular activities play a significant role in a student’s life as a uite. They encompass a wide range of options, from joining clubs and organisations to participating in sports, volunteering, or pursuing hobbies. While these activities can offer valuable experiences, the question often arises: Are they gain-worthy or mere distractions?

The statement I frequently hear people say about extracurricular activities in UI is that it is time-consuming and so one gets easily derailed or distracted. While there is a bit of truth in this, it isn’t usually the whole truth because, if closely observed, there are other extracurricular activities that consume students’ lives, such as partying and many others. You would typically realise that students participate in activities like variety nights, c-kay tour which may not be a distraction to them but when it comes to joining Rotaract, Asido Foundation, literary societies, UCJ among other clubs and organisations on campus they call it a distraction.

In an interview held with the best graduating student from the Faculty of Art (2022), a student of the Department of Classics who graduated with a CGPA of 3.86/4 she talked about how she was a member of 8 organisations. The astonishing part is that in her first year she was not involved with any organisation and her CGPA was not even as high as the one she graduated with. So, her joining 8 organisations in 300l, which is mostly regarded as the most strenuous year in UI means extracurricular activities do not distract.

Blessing, a first class student from the Department of Arts and Social Sciences, was also involved in quite many organisations, and yet, she wasn’t distracted whereas extracurricular activities provide numerous benefits that contribute to personal and academic growth. Engaging in these activities as Uites can help  develop essential life skills, such as time management, leadership, teamwork, and communication. These skills are transferable to the classroom and beyond, thereby enhancing a student’s employability and overall success.

More so, being involved in extracurricular activities as a Uite can enhance a sense of belonging and community on campus. Joining clubs such as L&D or organisations such as JCI, UCJ, even sports like Judo, swimming and others allows students to connect with peers who share similar interests, creating a supportive network. Networking is one skill that is being preached in this century, and you would agree that the importance of networking cannot be overemphasised. This can be particularly valuable as you get to meet students from other faculties, departments and levels as the case may be.

One other thing extracurricular activities also do is the enabling of people to pursue other interests aside from the academic areas they have chosen. Take for instance, some people are taking Mathematics as a course, yet they are in press societies or L&D this enables them to explore their passions and interests beyond their academic majors. This exploration can lead to personal growth, self-discovery, and a more in-depth understanding of one’s talents and aspirations. Another example, is someone studying vet medicine with a passion for poetry may discover a fulfilling hobby in Okigbo Christopher’s poetry club that complements their career goals.

In addition, most extracurricular activities in UI offer unique opportunities for skill development and career advancement. Internships, research projects, and leadership roles within clubs can be impressive additions to a resume, setting students apart in a competitive job market. Employers often value these experiences as they demonstrate practical skills and a proactive attitude.

If then we say Extracurricular activities are gain worthy, what exactly is distracting about it. Inability to strike a balance between extracurricular activities can be damaging to academics and biting more than you can chew. It’s significant to strike a balance between extracurricular activities and academics. When students become overly involved in too many extracurriculars, it can lead to burnout and negatively impact their grades. This is where the question of distraction arises. It’s crucial for students to prioritize their academic commitments and allocate their time wisely.

To avoid extracurricular distractions, students should set clear goals and boundaries. They should assess their interests and commitments realistically, ensuring they can manage their time effectively. Time management skills acquired through extracurricular activities can, in turn, be applied to academics, making students more efficient in their studies.

In conclusion, extracurricular activities in UI can be both gain-worthy and potentially distracting, but the gains are numerous depending on how they are approached. When students engage in these activities purposefully, they can reap numerous benefits, including skill development, personal growth, and a sense of community. However, when overindulged, they can become distractions that hinder academic performance.

The Essentiality of Social Involvement to our Dear Academic Life in Universities

By: Iremide

Social involvement plays a pivotal role in enhancing the academic life of university students. Beyond the lecture halls and textbooks, engagement in social activities and interactions enriches the educational experience in numerous ways. This article will delve into the multifaceted importance of social involvement in university life.

University provides a unique environment for meeting people from diverse backgrounds. Engaging in social activities, clubs, and organizations allows students to build a network of friends, mentors, and potential future collaborators. These relationships can be instrumental in academic and professional pursuits. They can lead to study groups, research partnerships, internship opportunities, and valuable career connections.

Social involvement fosters personal growth by pushing students out of their comfort zones. Joining clubs or participating in events often requires students to develop leadership skills, teamwork, and effective communication. These experiences build confidence and self-awareness, qualities that are valuable not only in academia but also in life beyond university.

University life can be stressful, with demanding coursework, exams, and deadlines. Social involvement provides an essential outlet for stress relief. Engaging in recreational activities, attending social events, or simply spending time with friends can help alleviate academic pressures. Strong social connections also contribute to better mental health, reducing the risk of loneliness and isolation.

Social involvement can enhance the learning process in various ways. Joining academic clubs or discussion groups can provide additional opportunities to delve deeper into subjects of interest. Exchanging ideas with peers in a social setting can lead to a better understanding of complex topics and can serve as a form of informal learning.

Balancing academics with social involvement requires effective time management and prioritization skills. Students engaged in social activities often become more organized and efficient in their academic work. Learning to allocate time to both social and academic commitments is a valuable life skill that can lead to improved academic performance.

Interacting with a diverse group of peers through social involvement exposes students to different cultures, perspectives, and ideas. This promotes cultural awareness and a broader worldview, which is essential in our increasingly interconnected global society. Exposure to diverse viewpoints can enrich classroom discussions and contribute to a more well-rounded education.

Many universities offer opportunities for community service and volunteer work. Socially involved students often participate in these activities, which instill a sense of civic responsibility and community engagement. These experiences not only contribute to personal growth but also align with the values of social responsibility and citizenship.

University life can sometimes be overwhelming, especially for incoming students. Engaging in social activities and joining clubs provides a sense of belonging and community. Feeling connected to a university and its culture can improve overall well-being and academic performance. It encourages students to stay committed to their educational goals.

Many social organizations and clubs provide opportunities for students to take on leadership roles. Serving as a club president, event organizer, or committee member allows students to develop leadership skills, which are transferable to various aspects of their academic and professional lives. These experiences look impressive on resumes and can open doors to future opportunities.

Lastly, social involvement prepares students for real-world challenges by teaching them valuable skills such as teamwork, conflict resolution, and adaptability. These skills are not only essential in academia but also in the workforce, where collaboration and adaptability are highly valued.

In conclusion, social involvement is not a distraction from academic life but a complementary and essential component of it. It enhances personal growth, builds valuable skills, fosters a sense of community, and prepares students for the challenges they will face beyond university. Therefore, it is imperative for students to strike a balance between their academic commitments and their social involvement to make the most of their university experience.

Leads to Freshers Successful Beginning in Higher Institutions

By: Seilatolaide

It is always a merged glorious and joyous beginning to have successfully secured an admission into a higher institution after the completion of high school. Entering into a large campus filled with hanging mysterious occurrences and confusion is something to wisely grasp through to achieve the primary aim of being a newly admitted college student. Anxiety is mostly  experienced by students ahead of the unknowing event of how a university works and how necessary skills and potential can be achieved with the right networking. But these anxiety can be quenched with  drops of set vision and mission alongside with right mentoring.

Being a university student requires a lot as one has successfully transitioned from a lower grade to a higher level of acquiring knowledge skills and potentials. The university seeks a little after all has been taught to check the degree of understanding and ability to practicalize, restriction on gadgets to enhance full concentration is nothing to be denied. Common features of most universities in Nigeria therein implies total reliance on teachers note giving and text books recommended in the call in contrast to this is a university where a high degree of freedom and ability to make decisions has been given.

Indeed, this is a powerful weapon given, but a misuse can ruin a whole build up. The secondary school seeks a comprehensive deposition of what has been learnt which paves ways for online  surfing of necessary information or frequent library visitation. It’s no longer news that the library has turned into some people’s friendly home. These people are wrapped with profound folds of ambition and optimally inspired. In reflection of these daily habits, overflow of success is not a denial.

A Fresher is not just a given noun “Fresher” this implores their level of naivety and limited exposure. As a university student this sends you to hold firmly to attaining the lines of success through making a closer connection with the experienced on campus. No one is an island of knowledge but attempting to reach a goal could require tightening the belt of your connection so as to be well guided and advised on the best required  strategy and lurking corners to grab.

Lecturers of various types on campus will be assigned to courses of their profession, these respected people are adequately filled with knowledge and readily pass those knowledge to you to excel and accomplish your primary aim in the school. But it should be noteworthy that the lecturers are human with various personalities which have to be reasonably studied. Some could require a direct mode of answering questions while another could prefer a comprehensive note beyond the material given in the lecture room.

Knowledge around the preferences of the lecturers requires smart study and attentiveness in the classroom. This further, points to the fact that attending every class is a bigger route to a bright end as the interaction with the lecture and fellow students only shine a lamp to a blindfolded spot. This enhances reaching out to necessary information and managing oneself to reading smart and excelling.

Many students lay behind what has been taught in the classroom based on overconfidence which drags them around the circle of coming to lecture only to listen to what has been explained and not have them penned. This overconfidence is a door to knocking the wave of failure which can drag an intellect to the room of dullness. Information provided in the classroom can’t all be recollected as there are some key information that can be the highly held information by the lecturer who, however, tests students reading and attention  skills  in the classroom by asking in the tests or exam. This emphasizes the importance of note writing in class as a Fresher.

It should be noted that being a Fresher doesn’t only require following the stated information but also being health wise. Good health makes a good grade. This is because someone in a bad health condition owing to the fact that such individuals prioritized reading over eating well, drinking well and exercising well.

Walking Through Adjusting to New Hostel Roommates as a Uite

By: Ayinke

The beginning of a new session is usually the most draining part of university life, particularly as a Uite. Staylites and Freshers are all around trying to get a bearing or balance for the new academic year. Although Freshers are faced with different challenges from Staylites, one challenge that brings both Staylites and Freshers into the same boat is the challenge of roommates.

It can not be surprising to hear that some people pray earnestly just for the issue of roommates. Why this isn’t a surprising issue is that sharing a living space with strangers can be a bit challenging at times, but with the right approach, it can also be a rewarding experience. This article will provide you with 6 valuable tips to help you navigate this important aspect of your journey in the university of Ibadan.

Effective Communication

Communication has proven to be useful in fostering every form of relationship. To have a healthy relationship with your roommates, you would need to communicate effectively so your thoughts can align or you don’t step on each other or one another’s toes. Effective communication can be formed if you do this by initiating conversations by introducing yourself and knowing more about your new roommates. There is also a need to discuss your expectations, preferences, and concerns openly.

Active Listening

Pay attention to what your roommates say and try to understand their perspective. Leaving home takes you far from family and hence you need to try to be a listening ear to your roommates. Family members are far off but your roommates are the closest to know your present situations so lend attentive and not just listening ears.

Also, take the initiative to learn, your perspective shouldn’t be the only dominant opinion. Just as you want to be understood, they  also want to be understood. In my first year, my roommate had this opinion that I was a know all, whatever gave that opinion I cannot tell but with time she got to adjust to my perspective and I also learned how my perspective wasn’t and shouldn’t be the only dominant perspective. Brood an atmosphere for learning..

Respect Personal Space

Respecting personal space and privacy is essential for a harmonious living environment, some people enjoy their personal spaces so much that trying to intrude can get on their nerves and so these are things that should be stated. Although oftentimes, these are things that may be revealed with time. But, before those revelations, you can establish boundaries, ensure you ask for permission before borrowing personal items

 Set Clear Rules and Boundaries

Creating clear rules and boundaries can prevent conflicts. Why this may look babyish at first, you will discover that a lot of conflicts that will ensue in your journey with your roommate or roommates are conflicts that could have been avoided if boundaries and rules had been put in place. Mind you, your limitations and rules are not to come off as an authoritarian or an over privileged person, remember you all share spaces as equal co-occupants of the room. These boundaries and rules should come off as this:

  • Discuss and agree upon rules for shared spaces like the kitchen and room.
  • Set up a cleaning schedule to keep shared areas tidy.
  • Establish quiet hours for studying and sleeping to ensure everyone gets the rest they need.

Be  Considerate

Consideration goes a long way in roommate relationships. Underestimating the power of consideration is undermining the power of a good heart. Having a good heart goes beyond sharing kinds of stuff or giving a helping hand but extends to things like noise control.

Embrace Diversity

Roommates often come from diverse backgrounds. Embrace differences like cultural sensitivity – ranging from food and style – and different lifestyles – acknowledge that your roommates may have different lifestyles and schedules.

Stay Positive

A positive attitude can make a significant difference. Don’t be the roommate everyone is afraid to come to, don’t be the problematic roommate. Implement friendly gestures and patience in your attitudes.

While all these mentioned tips can go a long way and are utmostly important in building relationships with your roommate it will be wrong not to note that sometimes the diversity in humans accounts for the diverse ways with which we handle people. Hence, as individuals, we should also learn to make compromises in order to live peaceably and amicably with our roommates. Remember the holy book which asked us to follow peace with all men.

In all, adjusting to new hostel roommates in college can be a rewarding journey with the right approach. Effective communication, respect, and consideration are key to fostering positive and lasting roommate relationships. Embrace diversity, resolve conflicts calmly, and prioritise safety to create a comfortable and enjoyable living environment throughout your college experience.

Extracurricular Activities: The Required Lecture Beyond the Four Walls

By: Eniola

University life goes beyond neglecting the role of extracurricular activities. Most times, students don’t want to engage in anything outside attending classes. Extracurricular activities have an important function that cannot be undervalued. What you receive during the course of engaging in these activities will aid in your personal and social growth and as well point you in the direction of self-discovery. This is something you won’t learn in a classroom setting.

Perhaps you are a fan of public speaking? The literary and debate society is there for you! Are words, tales, and expressing yourself through the creative press something you are passionate about? The Union of Campus Journalists and your department, faculty or halls of residence awaits you! There are many more extra activities that will suit your interest and aid your future ambitions. As such, they will boast your capability and efficiency later in the future.

Extracurricular activities present exceptional chances for personal development while engaging in enjoyable activities. Make the most of any opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities, once you’ve graduated, employers will want to see more than just your academic accomplishments on your resume. Participating in societies, sports clubs, volunteer work, and part-time employment is a fantastic way to expand your network. According to Christine Comaford-Lynch “Networking is marketing. Marketing your uniqueness, what you stand for.”

Enjoy your time at university, take a bold step and look out for the activity that interests you and most importantly, ensure adequate healthy balance between your social life and your studies.

Social Media and The Society; Exploring Through Its Saints and Devils

By Seilatolaide.

The invention of technology by the technological inventors of the past year has brought about huge changes to humans and their immediate society, the glaring improvement of the society holding to technological output is nothing to hide from. Technology has brought development ranges from the area of transportation and communication relief.

However, in the area of communication the development of mobile devices has been a dominant trend of society owing to human natural desire to socialize and network. Human beings are notably social beings who can’t actualize their aims and objectives in solitude but rather embrace a communal environment to put light into their set aims. Enveloping with some loops, social media has been a great means to promote societal growth and development. This impact is nothing to rubbish.

A gradual improvement in technology after its invention captivated the interesting reason behind the production of global system mobile at Europe (GSM) in 1986 which was part of the modern idea that transit into technological raw material at the period. GSM spread to other countries including Nigeria in 2001. The advancement paves the way for networking and connectivity with vast distance coverage worldwide thereby promoting improvement in human living.

The invention of GSM has brought about a great development with flexibility in usage as at the 21st century where mobile devices became much more handy. People with similar views, ideas, and impressions have an easy gathering through creation of memes and publications to bolster their similar worldview.

Information disseminated in the developed world are activated in a blink of an eye with the improvement held with GSM. With these simple mobile gadgets, people get access to several social media platforms including WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, Instagram and Twitter where engagement, opportunities and fascinating activities in other countries can be reached with ease. The idea and knowledge accumulated from these social media proves beneficial through the reasonable effect it brings at usage.

One of the significant parts of the society is education which shapes the society to a pool of raising intellects and useful individuals who bring virtue and value to the society. Education remains the foundational phrase of civilization and enlightenment. Notably, accessibility to knowledge and information to build individuals has become a handy move as connectivity to social media will provide the curious individual with comprehensive information and knowledge needed with ease and flexibility. Thus, it further enhances societal development which has been gauged by education.

Surrounding the positive effects of social media are some loops, interestingly, social media has brought huge changes to the global environment and alongside, spill disadvantages which we cannot be waived. People have embraced social media to the extent that it remains their main voice of self expressions and relations. This however, minimize their physical activities such as physical public opinion and campaigns, their support is limited to clicking “like” buttons thereby limiting human physical contribution to the society

Stalking, frauds, harassment, bullying, threats are some of those displayed offenses and crimes committed by people due to the invention of social media. WhatsApp, Instagram have relatively been a mode of improper display of behaviors and attitudes which are contrary to the norms, values and virtue of the society. The implication of these acts are the viral trends which are reducing the substances of societal moral and value  sustained long ago.

The initial societal togetherness and communality practiced by some cultures have remained highly elastic, the switch in this course result from the social media media as it postulates obsession, people are now seen with their folded devices all around with high preference in its interface than a physical relation. Lapses that come from this include slack in relationships, bondness within families and friends.

Social media happened to be a part of GSM which aims to promote easy communication and networking, this aim which thus expanded the development of GSM has been brimmed with flaws holding to the fact that the positive aim pushed aside the immediate environment individual abode, giving space for crime rates, exposure to sensitive contents and destroying human minds and soul.

ASSE Football Teams and Nuesa Deans Cup: Absence of Transparency Amidst Failed Promises

By: A.T

Briefly, recall that an article was published in May – 3 months ago – which pointed at the disappointment winners of the Nuesa Deans Cup – ASSE Male and Female Team – faced due to a bridge of cash prize agreement from the corners of the competition’s organizers. You can read the article here. Owing to this, it then came to the realization of the press that there were also traces of accountability and transparency failures within the confines of these football teams alongside the discouraged prize money.

After an extensive inquiry, it has come to light that the recently concluded Dean’s Cup for the ASSE teams, both male and female categories, remains inconclusive or only partially resolved. Pertaining to the male team’s victory, the initially promised prize of ₦20,000 was altered to ₦12,000 by the former faculty sports director, Orisa Kelechukwu (Kaycee). Regrettably, the ASSE male team ultimately received a reduced sum of ₦9,000 – instead of the cut short amount of ₦12,000. The team’s captain, Akintemi Micheal (Santi Cazorla), revealed that ₦3,000 was anticipated to be collected from Kaycee.

Conversely, the female team from ASSE emerged victorious in their category of the Dean’s Cup as well. The initial prize commitment for the female winners stood at ₦15,000. However, the prize was revised down to ₦8,000 by the former sports director, Kaycee. Subsequently, the female team’s coach, Kingsley, accepted this revised sum on behalf of the team, and the captain, Buari Omolola, received only ₦1,000 as her share of the prize.

The situation takes an intriguing turn when examining the male team’s compensation. Instead of the reduced ₦12,000, the team received ₦9,000. Remarkably, only the male team coach, Abey, and the male team captain, Santi Cazorla, were privy to this alteration—the immediate past ASSE sports director, Adams Damilola, was also left uninformed. This lack of transparency is what prompted the press involvement. Following thorough investigations, it was uncovered that a partial payment (₦9,000 of ₦12,000) had been disbursed to the team without the knowledge of all its members.

When questioned about this secrecy, Santi Cazorla explained that the intention was to wait until the full amount was secured before informing the team about the partial payment. Notably, Adams, the former sports director of ASSE, was among those unaware of this development.

Meanwhile, in the female team category, the coach, Kingsley, accepted the revised ₦8,000 prize on behalf of the team, allocating ₦1,000 to Captain Omolola. However, the remaining ₦7,000 went unallocated among the team members, contrary to the original intention of distributing or using the prize for a team-based event.

The press’s inquiries have revealed that the intended use of the received prizes was for team-related activities rather than individual possession. Regrettably, the lack of clarity and fair distribution has led to discouragement among the participants – players. These dedicated players invested substantial time in rigorous training, sacrificing academic commitments and lecture attendance to ensure the success of the competition. Disillusioned by the situation, these players are now skeptical to participate in future events.

These athletes, initially driven by their genuine belief that the compensation was withheld by the faculty or the former sports director, Kaycee, have discovered that their team leaders were also responsible for the actual withholding. The press has intervened to mitigate any potential decline in enthusiasm and passion for athletics that may stem from this incident.

In light of these circumstances, we earnestly urge that each team member is granted their rightful entitlements and treated equitably. It is essential to address this issue transparently and fairly to restore confidence and uphold the spirit of sportsmanship within the ASSE football community.

An Overview of the Adetoun’s Led Administration: The Highs, The Divisions and The Spoils (3) – The Spoils

By: The Scribe

As we juggle round a walk surrounding an overview of the outgoing Adetoun’s led administration, we thereby bring it to a close on this page by strolling through plays leading to ‘The Spoils’ of the tenure.

THE SPOILS

Constitution Saga
Perhaps, most Assesaites are yet to learn about the history surrounding lines of the constitution face-off which is why all concerned stakeholders are yet to see the delays as a very critical matter. Once you get equipped with the tune of this drama, then you can feel the rush of jokes portrayed by this issue. On a more serious note, the whole context is embarrassing.

In a meeting held with the department’s H.O.D during the early weeks of first semester on the path to way out in ensuring the October 20, 2021 amended constitution is being enacted and brought into operation, he drafted some steps to be taken to bring this into reality. The concerned stakeholders rather chose to handle this with levity hands; maybe for personal gains or due to a divided house.

The fact that a session went on without any move (not to mention serious move) in enacting the constitution is nothing far from failure on the whole administration – the stakeholders. By this, a weak foundation has been laid for the incoming administration to struggle through. I hope they are aware of the situation and are already sourcing ways to proffer tactical solutions.

Executives’ Naivety
The saying, “there is always room for improvement” will likewise be borrowed to pardon the administration on this aspect of ‘The Spoils’. Needing to point that the whole executives’ backlog was a line decorated by newbies which to some obvious extent slowed down the pace of their activities/duties in first semester.

The account signatory exchange, constitution enactment, lack of proper understanding of roles and getting directed back and forth by various forces amounted to the exhibits of their inexperience. Owing that it took them about a semester to get their dancing shoes and align such to their dancing steps cost the administration a hell of legacy implication.

Afterall, it’s Resilient’22, the manner at which they were able to recover from the adversities and thorns of first semester was to some extent a prove of their watchword. Ironically, perhaps to make a statement of this was even the goal in the first place.

Assesa Literary and Debating Society
The provisions of Chapter 2, Article IX of the Assesa Constitution that stipulates the roles, formation and duties of the department’s literary and debating society was clearly found missing during the 2021/2022 academic session. At some point, you only but come to a conclusion that the society is all gone and dead for the session.

During an interview section with the president of the society, Alade Testimony (which was published), he claimed the organization has been battling with restructuring and locating their bearing. This was an interview dated back to April 29, 2023, few days to the Nuesa Tug of Words.

The society faced serious challenges which a share of blame is of theirs, whereas, a timely checkup from the executives concerned would have fill in some gaps. At least, it was provided in the section (c) of the constitution cited earlier that the PRO is to serve as a bridge between the society and the executive arm. Having no presence of L & D day during the Assesa week and getting knocked out in the first round of Tug of Words were the resulting ends.

Failed Promises
The purpose of this part is to make a direct check on the manifesto of each office and fish out major aspect of the lists which were not executed.

A professional and social network integration and tutorials were not fully executed by the president. There was no trade fair and year book as promised by the vice president. Also, absence of an academic summit as appeared in the general secretary’s manifesto and the financial secretary failed to deliver any partnership with banks and likewise seminar on saving and investment.

As of the treasurer, he failed to bring on board the use of online receipt, creation of a financial spreadsheet and procurement of sponsorship. Lastly on this note, the assistant general secretary ghosted the provision of past questions (soft/hard copy) as stated in her manifesto. Obviously, It is always well better said than done.

Proposed Department Library
A standing legacy left by the Amoko Rebecca’s led administration was the move to secure a department library. What could have been an 100% reality has been left lying in the books of ‘yet to be completed’. Perhaps, it might result to being dead and long forgotten if the show of no concern from the expected parties persist.

To recap, books worth over ₦70,000 were procured through a sponsor – Provost of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo during the past administration, a space was provided at the language lab and a shelf is to be bought to get it kick started. Quite displeasing to realize that almost 1½ years gone since these plays, no single move was made by this administration as of its full acquisition. Neither was it a concern to them nor did they place it at the apex of their activities.

Back-Door Emergence of Sports and Academic Director
The November 2021 election failed to provide a sports and academic director as no one showed interest. On the failings of the 2021 ASSEC and the constitution imbroglio, individuals who were ready to take up these positions were screened alongside aspirants of the senate (proposed legislative arm in the pending constitution).

Fast forward to first semester, committees were said to have been set up to fill in these vacant positions. Not only were the committees’ activities being not productive in any way but that the emergence of the supposed head of these committees as executives was wrong in all sense of administrative and constitutional process. Assesaites as a whole (including the press body) were kept in dark while the whole event unfolded.

Their back-door emergence would have been partly forgiven had they actively function in these offices. To mention that the department only experienced 2 tutorial sessions for the entire session which was also an agenda that appeared in the President and AGS’s manifesto. Not only that, a significant number of the department football team claim not to have recognize the acclaimed sport director. This was someone who was claimed to have assumed the role since first semester.

CONCLUSION
The role of the press as a watchdog on elected officials and to raise voices to concerned issues has once again been laid. Dear outgoing executives, Adetoun’s led administration and concerned stakeholders, to what shall we remember you? ‘The Highs’ you demonstrated, ‘The Divisions’ that was expanded or ‘The Spoils’ you unraveled?

Note: All three articles published so far are not in any way means to rubbish the affairs of the outgoing administration but a medium to shed light that give them gaze to see to the commas of their runs. In same sense, it serves as an avenue to make improvement in their future endeavors and also a frame for the incoming administration. Here at Assesa Press, we speak NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH.

An Overview of the Adetoun’s Led Administration: The Highs, The Divisions and The Spoils (2) – The Divisions

By: The Scribe

Having made an inscription round ‘The Highs’ of the Adetoun’s led administration in the previous segment, in this part, we shall be extending our gaze to the second hand of the scorecard by critically running through features leading to ‘The Divisions’.

THE DIVISIONS

Absence of Oneness
The Arts and Social Science Education Department owing to its multi-optional course is at a point naturally shaped to exhibit some form of partitioning in structure which is believed to self-correct at the long run. In recent time, this has as well led to the existence of disparities thereby creating loopholes to stigmatize a known system of caucus-like in this range.

In this particular administration, this was further displayed which reflected in some activities that played out during the session. Assesa Press in one of its articles mentioned a warning line – “A house divided against itself shall not stand”. Where lies a house with series of minds aiming selfless goal, having individuals wanting to reign as the decider, having series of issues that thus set arms apart, having indistinct murmuring to create a third party; such house shall not stand.

The birth of this frail administration in addition to the pit in existence gifted their foundation a weak ground to set things alright. Unfortunately, the matters of past which has proved immortal came calling again in different image. Being too much to handle, they throw in the towel and extended the quantity of the divisions. Too what extent shall we carry this burden? Does the incoming Agoye Femi led administration have an answer? We shall see.

DCC vs Executives Embroilment
The two major power house that makes critical decisions lies the executive and DCC (Department Consultative Council) which is the legislative arm of the department. Notably to state here that the lock of horns between these two forces isn’t a new development. The suspension of the vice president during the first set of sittings marked the phase of this tenure’s materialization as of this.

Further, even though the sittings are mostly held with no observers other than press members, the writings on the wall as of the state of matter between these two is visible to members of the department; even without the press publication. Pictured as a resulting division arises from the failure to see criticisms against each other as mainly a way to achieve a common goal (for the association/department) and set prevailing issues aside for a great cause.

To think the real picture is in a veil simply translates to saying the truth shall never be revealed; which is not the case. It must thereby be registered in the heart of DCC and Executive members that the gap created by their resulting clashes is an invitation to an external force which has as well always being the tune of the game. It’s a battle of the past administrations, turning to culture and norms for a hole in the current, incoming and future tenures.

Screening Disqualifications
At the evening of May 9, 2023, the screening result of aspirant vying for Nuesa executive positions were released by the education electoral commission. In what was recorded as a big turn off, two of the three executive aspirants from the department – Ayodele Esther, Fin. Secretary aspirant and Abdullah Abdulhamid, Social Director aspirant got disqualified. It was hard to accept as the only aspirants who were disqualified from the screening were of ASE.

Walking down the drain, Arts and Social Science education department has also been a force when it comes to faculty elections. It also in sense simplifies the pillar of power and authority the department possesses in other relating matters. How unwell it speaks to such downfall throw questions across different angles.

That this occurred in this administration lies on the varying force of the growing house divisions; a glimpse of the aftermath has been presented. Would you blame the stakeholders for not adequately preparing the aspirants for what is to come? When one considers the load of political experience minds embedded in ASE, you will likely be forced to pitch blames to these stakeholders.

Some party are also of the notion that it was a joint political move in a bid to clip the powerful hands of ASE, how true or untrue this tends to be had been seen and much shall be seen. Even if the former stands, would you point fingers to the attackers or to the hands who widely opened the doors for the attackers’ entrance?

Paulism Saga
I would have love to throw a question to Adenipekun Paul which goes thus, “Do you think you could have emerged victorious in the election had you being a student of CHDS which is Gucci’s department?” His answer to this would have help me in shaping how to throw my banters here. Nevertheless, let’s make some approach.

On a simple frame of mind, you would have thought any candidate or aspirant of ASE aiming for a faculty post is already one leg in due to the narrative of the past and the department’s population. It’s actually about time we structure our minds to negate this believe. Firstly, it’s a secret ballot election where you can’t hold anybody accountable for not voting a candidate from his department.

Secondly, even if it’s not secret ballot, the laws of the land protect an individual having absolute right to vote for any candidate of his choice in an election. Having established how things are meant to be, let approach this base on the reality of the game – how things are.

What could have been an easy ride for Paulism, who was the only candidate on the ballot paper from the department out of 16 candidates, became a tough ride that ended on the wrong side. To those who failed to solidify this stand, please question yourself. To the executives, DCC, stakeholders and key members of the department, what was your contribution to ensuring the success or should I say what was your role in the failed process?

As a matter of fact, it is becoming a long rail of history. African Lincon’s (AbdulAzeez AbdulJeleel) defeat to Jude Nicholas was pictured a political move owing to some divisions within the pillars of the department. Again, with the play of events, we can conclude and say Paulism’s defeat to Gucci is also a political move owing to same reason. How unfortunate.

History shall have it in its books that the largest department of over 600 population in faculty of education failed to have a representative in the Nuesa executive arm for the 2022/2023 academic session owing to a divided house.

You can meet Adenipekun Paul if you are curious of what his answer to that question might be. I will as well ask, because I want to know his mind.

Note: We draw the closure on this note and flip the face of the page. The next page shall carefully address actions leading to ‘The spoils’ of the Adetoun’s led administration. Stay Tuned.

An Overview of the Adetoun’s Led Administration: The Highs, The Divisions and The Spoils (1)

By: The Scribe

PREAMBLE
Walking through my past three years in the Arts and Social Science Education Department, I made reflections on the turn of events and to what extent it has grown. Carefully, I analyzed the transition process from one administration to another, opened a score card, rated their actualization, their activities, their high points as well as low points.

In so doing, I of the view, hope to reach a conclusion on the trend to see who raised the bar and who placed the bar in a dislocating position. I also as much believe that when a fire burn, it doesn’t start all of a sudden, some variables must have come into play.

In building a house, the foundation is believed to be the most important factor that determines the strength, stand and longevity of such erection. As much as this solidifies, it transforms that the foundation of every organization has a huge percentage of say on what it tends to stand for come the subsequent and later years. Even in the heart of a nation, the evolution of its origination and preceding range is a decider of its future.

Why the mention of foundation? It’s of the notion that the manner in which an administration lay the first set of rocks goes a long way to determining its expectancy rate. This, of course, was much anticipated when the election was held back then in November 2021 – as to how the Adetoun’s led administration will shape following the legacy of their successor; Becca’s administration.

Here, the goal is to draft a score card of the outgoing administration and see to what extent they have prove some points in relation to various activities performed during the course of the session. Likewise, the high and low points of the administration shall be analyzed coupled with some variabilities believed to have spilled palm oil on their white garment.

THE HIGHS

Nuesa Deans Cup
In all pronounce of fairness, the administration on the score sheet performed to earn itself some favourable ticks. The Dean’s cup organized by NUESA in second semester saw the Arts and Social Science Education Department making a historical statement. Emerging victorious in both the male and female category of the football competition was a feat that will be difficult for any department to match.

Even though the department has always been a strong force when it comes to football not only within the faculty of education but in the university of Ibadan doesn’t stage the victory on basis of familiarity, it rather places much expectation on the team and administration as a whole to maintain the status quo and further make bigger history like they’ve exemplified.

Assesa Week
To those who were present, you will in line reckon to have had an Assesa Week of fun which was educative in its way, though it as well fell short across various angles. The activities engaged during this period was placed as one of the administration’s highs not because of the contents but due to the turn out of Assesaites in these events.

This doesn’t berate the structure of the activities in any way but a credit to the administration’s effort in pulling such encouraging number of attendees knowing how difficult it is to make Assesaites or say Uites attend social events.

Package
Another area that falls within this corner is the Package (Souvenirs). We as well know that this context is always well anticipated for by every member of the department and it is so such that some individuals perhaps measure the goodness of an administration on its basis. Also, it should be noted that every member of the department will be a partaker of this distribution.

For the past 3 sessions, this is the first time a huge percentage of Assesaites will place a high rating on the package shared by an administration. This has to some extent displayed their satisfaction gauge in the souvenirs. Notwithstanding, knowing we rally in an environment of mixed feelings, there are as well some individuals who weren’t satisfied. They have the right to feel as such and it is quite expected being that there’s no ‘all perfect’.

Dinner/Award Night
This basket of highs will be incomplete without taking a stroll around the department’s dinner/award night – Ariya Galore. Having experienced series of unsatisfactory standard in the past administration, the bar was raised above the previous administration’s status this time around. Having merged with the department of Linguistics, much was not at first expected – when you consider the turn up for the ticket acquisition, even though much was expected.

Placed on the Ariya Galore was to prove a point to attendees that it is worth the pay and large list of broadcasts showcased. It was at first feared to be one that will be partly enjoyed considering the pairing which as well spells that the whole time of the event will be shared by both departments. Rather, the pairing proved to be of favourable stance as it wasn’t only cost efficient but also delivered in the host of performances displayed.

Note: In the next phase of this segment, the score card will flip its page. In this next page, features leading to The Divisions shall be analyzed and scored.

ASSESA Literary and Debating Society; Dead or Alive?

By: The Scribe

To begin with this piece, there’s need to lay down some predispositions. The Arts and Social Science Education Department comprises of various student association which as such makes it a whole. The executive arm, the DCC (the legislative), the press body, the literary and debating society as well as the stakeholders. All these makes up the umbrella body known as Arts and Social Science Education Students’ Association (ASSESA). Each has to its respective activities which therefore spells that the inadequacies of one will not be covered by another.

The literary and debating society of the department has in past months show signs of inactivity which delimits the expected roles required of this society. Issues surrounding the adversity of restructuring and rebranding had been thrown as a cover by top representatives of the society which has this thrown the course of whether to describe the state of this society as being alive, half awaken, ghostly, dead awaiting resurrection or completely dead. To say the literary and debating society of the largest department in Faculty of Education or rather say in the university (stands to be corrected) used a whole session to redefine itself will not be acceptable by anyone who values the department.

A visit to the ASSESA constitution gives a clear demonstration of what is expected of the department’ literary and debating society. It also bring to notice that the society is clearly and officially recognized via the constitution which as such makes it a functional section of the department. Therefore, some responsibilities and duties is expected of the Society. In Chapter 2, Article IX of the Assesa Constitution (Amended);

(a).There shall be a Literary and Debating Society that will represent the department in all matters of intra-faculty and other debating competitions.

(b). This Society shall be headed by a President.

(c).The Director of Public Relations shall serve as Liaison Officer between the Society and the Association’s executive council.

(d). The Society shall be autonomous, but financially dependent on the Association.

(e).The aim of the Society shall be to develop the public speaking, oratory and literary skills of its members.

(f).The Society shall report its activities to the Senate through its President.

Stating categorically, in the explanation rendered by both the President, Alade Testimony, and the Speech Coach, Joshua Emmanuel, they tabled the stance that the society lost some top members to graduation which left them on a search for new members. Also, the society not being well foregrounded and structured calls for a need to lay it down on a balanced state so as to allow the society fly high come next session. As a matter of concern, no one will go against restructuring and rejuvenating of the society, but that this took them a whole session is something that warrants convincing explanations.

The population is there in the department for the society to fetch intelligent members that suit its jurisdiction. Also, Assesaites are known to be intelligent individuals which has been proven over time. A session comprising of two semesters should have been well planned in the sense that the first semester could have been wholly dedicated to recruitment and restructuring while they face the matters at hand in the second semester. It should also be noted that restructuring is a continua process which is infinite, every session will always call for restructuring as it is definitely of required.

In a WhatsApp chat with the President of the Society, he made claims of having a slow start to the session, (especially the first semester) and likewise accept the notion that the literary and debating society of the department has been a ghost of itself.

“Well, I’d say that this is true and it’s due to the fact that I didn’t implement the plans that has been made on time. One of the major factors that caused this was the strike. The 8 months long strike to an extent affected things and everyone got busy with other things which then caused a delay in the implementation of set plans. Even at that, a recruitment process is ongoing for new members and training will start soon.”

It is to be noted that the slow start to assuming of duties rendered the society passive this session. The recruitment process which was meant to have been rolled out and done with since first semester is still on their tables awaiting scrutiny and selections. Joshua Emmanuel, the Speech Coach, claimed there was a call for members broadcast around last year Nov/Dec (First Semester). The writer of this article seem not to have any evidence of this claim, but even if the claim is true, what then happened to the aftermath of the expected processions? Why make a new call for members two weeks ago when the earlier call had not being dealt with?.

The focal point to hold onto here is that the Society itself lacks commitment and dedication to service as expected of its top members. Having a slow start to the session was simply as a result of their obvious negligence of duty and failure to exercise the appropriate responsibilities at the right time. Even till the moment of gathering this piece, it is yet to be ascertained if there has been a conclusion on the intake and orientations of new members of the departments’ literary and debating society.

Moreover, during the last sitting of the DCC which scrutinized the budget of the just concluded Assesa Week, it was made mention that the president of the literary and debating society of the department has failed to reach out to any of the executives since the beginning of the session. In the Assesa week, it was expected of the Society to hold an inter level oratory contest which thus failed. Dear readers and fellow Assesaites, don’t be surprised if by the way you arrive at the Faculty’s tug of words and fail to see a representative from Arts and Social Sciences Education.

As a concerned Assesaites who has to his heart the love of the department, it therefore saddens one’s heart at the state of the departments’ literary and debating society this session. In their words, they promised a rejuvenated society come next session. We shall wait, but we shall never forget that for a whole session, the society was a ghost of itself. It was dead, infact, still dead, awaiting resurrection.

Matters Surrounding the Position of Assesa Sports Director: What We Thought We Know and The Realizations

By: The Scribe

The scenario we are about to picture will be at first likened to a brief expression, this will provide a clear mental image of what we are about to describe. Imagine writing an examination of a particular course where you wrote to your ever best and even took an extra sheet. The feeling that rushes across your veins afterwards will show the indication that you are expecting nothing less than an A in that particular course. Few weeks later, results were pasted and you find out to your biggest upset that you had a D. What a shock!!!

You aren’t the only one flowing in the swam of this feeling, we actually felt the same. And what we felt was confusion and a disappointing rush that what we thought we know, we don’t know. As a press organization, we are always of the notion that all that has to do with affairs surrounding the department shouldn’t be far from us. Not that we request to receive every first-hand information but we expect to be aware immediately a new development occurred or perhaps later on.

What We Thought We Know
Recall that during the last Asessa Election held in November 2021, the position of the academic and welfare director and that of the sport director was vacant (no one contested for it). Someway, there was a bye election organized to fill up these positions alongside a FLC seat and senatorial positions (senate seat as proposed by the new constitution). The aftermath of this event seemed to have flown under the carpet as no precise conclusion was made in this process before the handing over occurred all round.

The wind that surrounds enacting a new constitution poured some cobwebs on the entire matter as senators who were meant to serve as the legislative arm of the department were no where as the constitution that backed them couldn’t even back itself. Nothing serious came out of this as there was already an existing provision for this – Assesa Departmental Consultative Council was immediately put in place for legislative purposes.

There came the ASUU strike which lasted for 8 months with the post of academic and welfare director and that of the sport director still obviously vacant. After the strike, it was the believe of all that individuals who showed interest for the position will be inaugurated and made to assume their respective duties and responsibilities. What was said to cause the delay and eventual stoppage was a matter that likewise surrounds the constitution.

To the entire department and press members, our notion was that these executives’ positions were indeed vacant, we were all awaiting the final deliberations on the constitution before final approval will then slide in. All through the first semester, the believe was that all these posts were still unoccupied as the new constitution was yet to be enacted and no one in anyway was referred to as the academic and welfare director or the sports director.

The positions were also obviously vacant as only one tutorial was organized in first semester and the sport desk was presumed to have been filled by the treasurer of the association – Agoye Femi. During the feedback meeting organized by Assesa Press, questions on the dormant duties of these vacant executive positions were raised. There, it was said that executive members have been trying their best to delegate the duties within themselves. These are what we thought we know as regards the story surrounding the two positions and we actually believed we knew enough.

The Realizations
Damilola Adams Kayode, a 300l student of the department, as revealed lately is said to be the Sports director of the department. According to reports, he assumed this duty on February 27th, 2022. As revealed in a sitting held at the department’s secretariat on Friday, April 21st, 2023, he was coopted by the president which made him assumed office. Also, in the reports gathered, he was one of those who participated in the bye election which was said to have been set aside.

How the “Sports Director” got inaugurated without the knowledge of the press and a large percentage of Assesaites is a scenario begging for answers. Its wide obvious that the line of process of his assuming to office is shaky and cannot be understandable at this point. The sport director position isn’t the only vacant post in the association, why then will there be an action that specially coopted him? Why can’t that power did the same for the academic and welfare director and the senatorial members? Constitution delay?

A sport director who is not recognized by the press, Assesaites, the football team and other athletics in the department is out of the line. No official statement was released that states his resumption of duty, all sporting activities as said earlier were delegated to an executive throughout the first semester, he wasn’t anywhere around during the first semester Seal’s Cup and the recent 200 level Survival Cup and no budget was presented by his office during the first semester. These are expressions that seeks clarification to why he should be recognized as the department’s Sport Director.

To Assesa DCC, they also have clarifications to make. We believe this couldn’t have occurred without the knowledge of the legislative arm because constitutionally, the DCC is meant to accent to the cooption done by the president. We don’t know if the DCC as a decision-making body allow all these to slid pass for some reasons or they feel the way the process went was the proper way. Certainly, if this has actually happened with the knowledge of the Assesa DCC, we then need to place a check on the integrity of our ‘dear’ honourable members.

His Personality and Attitudes Towards the Position

The ‘Sports Director’ has never sent out any broadcast publicizing an ASE football match. At least, if he had publicized the first semester Seal’s Cup matches of the department’s team, we would have been made aware that we have a sport director. He was also unseen throughout the 3 matches played by the department’s 200 level team during the survival competition. For the upcoming Dean’s Cup, he seems to be unconcerned as he also failed to inform Assesaites of the upcoming matches as the competition is concerned.

As perceived, the attitudes showed by him towards the position wouldn’t have changed had it been he had been inaugurated like other current executive members. He displayed no act of commitment and pledged responsibility towards the position as shown during the last DCC sitting. As the press organization of the department, it is our responsibility to inform Assesaites of information they deserve to know. Of course, we and the entire department expect the DCC and the President to do better.

DARK OCTOBER: JUNGLE JUSTICE; JUSTICE OR MURDER?

By: Scottie the skinny girl

I stumbled upon the release date of the movie “Dark October” on Netflix some time ago, and I decided to make it a date to see the movie after I had read the brief bio on the movie.

I wept when I saw the movie after its release. I imagined the many lives that have been lost to similar sceneries. It embittered my heart and got me thinking about what level of crime should result in Jungle justice. I wondered if in the cause of fighting crime, we weren’t turning criminals ourselves. I wondered if we see ourselves as superheroes who intend to fight the crimes ourselves rather than leave it to the law.

Jungle justice, also known as mob justice, is a term used to describe the act of taking the law into one’s own hands, without due process, and often violently. This phenomenon is prevalent in many parts of the world, including Nigeria, where it has become a major social issue. The recent Netflix movie “Dark October” sheds light on the dangers and complexities of jungle justice, and the need to address it as a society.

“Dark October” is a true story about the events leading to the lynching of four university students in Nigeria in 1996. The students were accused of stealing a cell phone and were beaten and burned alive by a mob. The movie portrays the horrors of this gruesome act and the impact it had on the families of the victims and the nation as a whole.

While jungle justice may seem like an act of vigilante justice, it is, in fact, a violation of the law. The Nigerian constitution guarantees the right to a fair trial and due process of law, and any act that goes against this principle is illegal. Jungle justice not only violates the law, but it also perpetuates a culture of violence and impunity.

One of the main arguments in favor of jungle justice is that it is a form of deterrence. People who engage in criminal activities are said to be less likely to do so if they know that they could face immediate and violent retribution. However, this argument fails to consider the fact that many innocent people have been victims of jungle justice. The lack of due process means that anyone can be accused and punished, regardless of whether they are guilty or not.

Moreover, jungle justice is often fueled by rumours and false information. In the case of the four university students in “Dark October,” they were accused of stealing a cell phone, but there was no evidence to support this claim. The mob acted on hearsay and assumptions, leading to the tragic loss of innocent lives. Or how does burning individuals brutally seem like justice? Also, stoning people to death also feel like justice served without proper investigation. There is a reason for the law, and it is to stop anarchy which jungle justice will breed. The reason for investigation is to avoid sentencing an innocent person to a gruesome and unworthy death and punishment, but jungle justice violates that.

The solution to jungle justice lies in addressing the root causes of the problem. Poverty, unemployment, and a lack of faith in the justice system are some of the factors that contribute to the prevalence of jungle justice. To combat this, the government needs to invest in education, create job opportunities, and improve the justice system to ensure that it is fair and accessible to all.

In conclusion, jungle justice is a violation of the law and a threat to the rule of law. It perpetuates a culture of violence and impunity that undermines the justice system. The movie “Dark October” highlights the dangers and complexities of jungle justice and the need for society to address it. It is time to act and work towards a society where justice is done through the rule of law, not the law of the jungle. If all these said seem not enough reason to kick against jungle justice, imagine yourself in a situation of being accused wrongly, even as a little child whatever anguish you feel, numerous innocent victims have gone through more anguish.

Just to chip in, another life has just been lost to the cold hands of Jungle Justice. The final year student of Obafemi Awolowo University was beaten to death over the theft of a phone.

Come to think of it, are humans Animals?
Are we cannibals?
Of what essence is the law if it is not allowed to take its course?
And finally jungle justice, justice or murder?

I know you know what you will answer and mind you your answer is a reflection of what and who you are .

BRAIN DRAIN COMMUNITY AND ITS CROSSOVER FESTIVAL TRIVIALS

By: The Scribe

According to Wikipedia, ‘Brain Drain from Nigeria, nicknamed Japa (meaning run or flee in Yoruba) is the exodus of middle-class and highly skilled Nigerians which has been occurring in waves since the late 1980s to early 1990s. This trend was initially restricted to certain profession but has now become free for all with the introduction of visa programs in order to fill workforce gaps in developed nations.’ This was sparked by an economic downturn which followed the discovery of oil wells in Nigeria.

In the world of Nigeria, it is widely written on its walls of how much daredevils the country has been swimming-in, it is also of a virtual reality and a matter of a strong faith to tell of when the country will be free from its evils and vices that has truncated the value drive aspired by her forerunners. It’s of a high history lane when matters of the country’s problem origin is been mentioned. Studies have even shown that it has been termed infinite and voluminous.

Out of these numerous problems faced by Nigeria is the talk of brain drain syndrome. In this scenario, intellectuals and well-trained practitioners in the country seek greener pasture in more developed country. As stated in the first paragraph, it has its history as far as 1980 during the economic downturn experienced. Ever since then, the story line has always round about having the best hands move out of the country and being of good use in another land.

THE AFFECTED ONES

Before the civilized context of japa slang, the range of brain drain syndrome pitched its tent in youths who tend to find means of making their lives better by moving out of the country. Most of them even get involve in series of activities (legal or illegal) as a route or medium to get their bags out of the country. Much later, the range advanced to intellectuals who tend to leverage their interest in getting their services rendered in a more advanced settlement that value their efforts in terms of wages and salary.

The field of intellectuals in this case fall within the bracket of the medical practitioners, say the health sector. They, at this, make themselves available to meet the needs of other advanced countries who are either short of medical hands or qualified practitioners. As of this light, it has then become a normal norm for this line of profession as they get to earn a wage that is thrice what they would have been paid in Nigeria. In addition, they also get to work in a safe and conducive environment with adequate up-to-date medical tools and equipment.

Recently, the syndrome has been far extended to the teaching profession. We have the caregivers moving out of the country to a modernized setting that offer to them the necessary needs for their wants and desires. Over the past few years, lecturers, high ranked professors, instructors and teachers have made their way out of the country. With the level of incessant strikes, poor working condition, lack of security for job and lives, poor remuneration has been a major determinant.

THE WHYS

Brain drain is accustomed to via a large number of effects which has been increasing the population of the affected ones. This has also in some sense encouraged others to see jetting out of the country as the surest medium. Talk on the advent of unemployment, unqualified or lack remuneration, time to time strike, poor salaries, poor working condition, high poverty rate, religious and communal crises, political crises andlack of quality education, the list is actually an endless one.

According to a study reported on Wikipedia, corrupt practices and bad leadership is another factor that has led to the brain drain. Failure to implement the right policies atthe right time has render some of the key sectors (Health and Education) useless. The poor funding of these sectors which has brought to it backwardness in administration and work delivery has let to the shocking uprising of skilled workers jetting out of the country.

In addition, the brain drain system has also extended its wings to the entertainment industry with the likes of Doris Simeon, Lara George, Lola Alao, OpeyemiAiyeola, BayoBankole, Regina Askia and some others migrated to other countries. Owing to some effects like pirating of movies, bad policy regulation, unstructured system, the entertainment industry is also a prey of the brain drain. If the country has been the best to their taste, there wouldn’t have been the need to take to their heels and take off the country.

THE EFFECTS

The percentage of the annual budget apportioned to the health sector has always been of a figure less than 5%. For a determining sector of health, this speaks volume to how bad the system is been run. The public health care situation of the country is not an encouraging situation as we have the presence of obsolete equipment and low number of qualified doctors.

In a 2017 survey carried out by Nigeria’s polling agency, NOI Polls, in conjunction with Nigerian Health Watch, it was found that most doctors seek opportunities abroad as 88% of doctors were considering work opportunities abroad. On average, 12 doctors a week move to UK. It was also recorded that Nigeria has lost more than $2bn since 2010 to training doctors who later migrate.

The spoils of Nigeria have been the gains of these developed countries.  Countries like United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, Saudi Arabia and south Africa has been at the positive end of brain drain system. Countries such as UK has 10% of African countries medical doctors working under its system which has thus save the UK $2.7bn by recruiting these doctors.

Another shocking statistics of Wikipedia revealed that Nigerians spend about ₦359.2billion annually while seeking health care abroad, this surprisingly is another brain drain syndrome which has a long run effect on the nation’s economy. Theses are only figures of the heath sector, how much do we want to imagine the effect this has had on other affected sectors. A country blessed with rivers of talents but attacked by several negatives working against her good will.

THE WAY OUT

Even though it is said to be justified enough when the whys of Nigerians who have cross over is being accessed, still that does not also mandate the fact that it should be encouraged. Lots of debates has surround the proposed bill at the Senate level which seeks to mandate a compulsory 5 years service on graduating medical professions before they are being certified of their profession. Although the bill’s goal is to reduce the brain drain effect yet it speaks harshness.

Not leaving out the education sector, graduates are now having their eyes on the trend to further their professional studies in a well-advanced country. Those who have the financial capability to fly off do so while those who wish to but has no means have no choice than to lay low and face the reality. The line yet still hold the record that about 95% of these population will flee if given the choice and resources.

Policy  that address these challenges should be implemented. At the mention of policy, we mean financial funding of these parastatals so that they can function appropriately to their potential level. There should be provision of quality infrastructures that befits the required system. Check should be placed on ensuring the available equipment are not obsolete and also meet the required standard of purpose.

Series of motivation should be made available for workers which in turn serve as a positive reinforcement to them as it enable them to give their all and stay happy at what they engage in.If to the resources embedded in this country are used to the level that satisfies it utilization, Nigeria will be on the banks of her foretold aspirations.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND THE FACED STUMBLING BLOCKS

By: Seilat Olaide

Education is essential towards a good and promising life. To fulfill most good desires surrounding being successful, one must be informed and stay connected as such with wide knowledge. Education aims to instill human with knowledge, culture, value, norms and migrate them from an ignorant condition to a civilized form. Education has changed a lot of human life, ranging from their physical ability to mental process of decision making.

A good theoretical knowledge is essential for every human to function well in the practical aspect of life as education aim to build us with theoretical knowledge which stands as foundation towards a practical life. A good grade is essential as it’s in some way a measure towards a successful career (though not every time). Thus, necessary attention should be geared towards focusing energy on how to move around a good grade as a student.

As stated earlier, having good grades might not be a 100% guarantee for a successful after life school, such still does not rubbish the importance of possessing good grades. But, even with the prior knowledge known to all students that a good grade is important towards getting a better life, it is widely known now that the context has changed. There are still multiples of students’ failure in academics which are caused by some major factors which include the following:

One of the major factors that causes students’ failure can be found in some external factor which perhaps kills the burning desire to earn a good grade for students are faced with multiple issues in their environment. Schools are not just built but they are to be facilitated with necessary infrastructures that promote easy access to materials and conducive environment (good light, water, air condition, easy access to library) which makes learning friendly. Imagine a case whereby the school is poorly funded and necessary infrastructures are not put in place, this can then lead to frustration and eventually the failure of many students.

Personal factors are also a stumbling block when it comes academic excellence, there are human thought and reasoning which are not healthy for human prospects. These challenges could be from lack of inspiration, losing one’s self esteem, frustration, discouragement coming from economic status or lack of love shown from family, this negatively affect students reasoning therefore prone them into the journey of dwelling in theirownnegative thought rather than finding a solution to prevent its damages spreading over their major life aspects. This personal factor has huge effect on students’ academic performanceand if left unchecked, it can aggravate to the level of being destabilized in life.

One of the major reason humans want to stay informed apart from moving away from ignorance is to be stable economically, financially, and to retain integrity in the society. Many students could have gotten their balance in other aspects that makes up excellence, whereas they are lagging in the financial aspect which make then revert into struggling for the acquisition of a means of survival and their academic funding.

This imbalance between getting themselves upright financially and trying to cope academically at same time is enough to serve as a stumbling block to their path towards academic excellence. These can also range to frustration causing majority to opt out as a result of inability to cope with the burden. The financial aspect of a student must be balance and sufficient to gain the necessary good grades they have want.

Above are the most common reason responsible for students’ failure and in order to prevent failure or further damages necessary observation should be made by student to know the root of the cause. Knowing the origin of the cause is a half good news but not yet a complete one than going in search of the solution. The fantasy of being honoured with academic distinction can only be actualized if the mission, inspirations and motivations which serve as a drive to attaining the grades are retained.

THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF KENNETH MELLANBY

By: FPO

Kenneth Mellanby was a prominent British zoologist and entomologist, known for his pioneering research on insect physiology and behavior. He was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England in 1908 and died in 1993. Mellanby made significant contributions to the fields of zoology and entomology during his career, and his legacy continues to influence modern research in these fields.

One of Mellanby’s most significant contributions to science was his research on the behavior of insects. He studied the effects of hormones and other chemicals on insect behavior and physiology, and his work helped to shed light on the complex interactions between insects and their environment. His research also had important practical applications, including the development of insecticides and other pest control methods.

Mellanby was also a respected authority on the behavior and ecology of birds, and he wrote extensively on these topics throughout his career. His research on bird behavior and migration helped to advance our understanding of these complex phenomena and provided important insights into the ecological interactions between birds and their environment.

In addition to his scientific research, Mellanby was also a dedicated teacher and mentor to many young scientists. He served as a professor of zoology at the University of Sheffield from 1945 to 1968, and his students and colleagues remember him as a kind and inspiring mentor who was deeply committed to his work.

Today, Mellanby’s legacy continues to influence modern research in zoology, entomology, and related fields. His contributions to our understanding of insect behavior, bird ecology, and other topics have had a lasting impact on the scientific community, and his dedication to teaching and mentorship has inspired countless young scientists to pursue their own research careers.

Kenneth Mellanby’s impact in Nigeria was primarily through his work as a consultant to the Nigerian Government’s Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources in the early 1960s. At that time, Nigeria was experiencing a significant increase in agricultural productivity, but was also facing new challenges related to pest control and environmental conservation.

Mellanby’s expertise in entomology and pest control was highly valued by the Nigerian Government, and he was invited to visit the country in 1961 to provide advice and guidance on these issues. During his visit, Mellanby worked closely with Nigerian scientists and government officials to develop new strategies for controlling pests and improving agricultural productivity.

One of Mellanby’s most significant contributions to Nigeria was his work on the control of tsetse flies, which are a major pest in many parts of the country. Tsetse flies transmit a parasite that causes sleeping sickness in humans and livestock, and the control of these flies was essential for the development of sustainable agriculture in Nigeria. Mellanby’s research on tsetse fly ecology and behavior helped to inform the development of new pest control strategies that were effective in reducing tsetse fly populations and preventing the spread of sleeping sickness.

Mellanby’s work in Nigeria also had important implications for environmental conservation. He recognized the importance of preserving natural habitats and biodiversity, and he advocated for the use of integrated pest management strategies that were more sustainable and environmentally friendly than traditional pesticide-based approaches. His research on the ecology and behavior of insect pests helped to inform these strategies, and his work on environmental conservation in Nigeria helped to pave the way for future efforts to protect the country’s natural resources.

Kenneth Mellanby had a significant impact on the University of Ibadan in Nigeria during his tenure as Vice-Chancellor from 1955 to 1960. During this time, he implemented a number of important reforms and initiatives that helped to transform the university and set it on a path to becoming one of the leading academic institutions in Africa.

One of Mellanby’s most significant contributions to the University of Ibadan was his focus on academic excellence and research. He worked to attract top talent from around the world to the university, and he established new research programs and initiatives to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation. He also worked to strengthen the university’s ties with other academic institutions and organizations around the world, which helped to raise the profile of the university and attract new funding and resources.

Mellanby was also a strong advocate for diversity and inclusivity at the University of Ibadan. He worked to increase the number of female students and faculty members at the university, and he promoted a culture of tolerance and respect for different cultures and viewpoints. This helped to make the University of Ibadan a more welcoming and inclusive place for students and scholars from all backgrounds.

Another important contribution that Mellanby made to the University of Ibadan was his focus on community engagement and outreach. He recognized the importance of the university’s role in the broader community, and he worked to establish new partnerships and initiatives to promote social and economic development in the region. This included programs to improve healthcare, education, and agricultural productivity, which had a positive impact on the lives of people in the surrounding communities.

Overall, Kenneth Mellanby’s impact on the University of Ibadan was significant and far-reaching. His focus on academic excellence, diversity, and community engagement helped to transform the university and establish it as a leading academic institution in Africa. His legacy continues to be celebrated and recognized today, and he is remembered as one of the most important figures in the history of the University of Ibadan.

FROM THE BOOKS OF ADVISORY TO ASPIRANTS

By: The Scribe

To my dear fellow educators who have taken solace in setting forth their search for wisdom in this great citadel of learning, I drive my two-edged sword to. To the heart of ones who to a certain level of their self-esteem and actualization see themselves carrying the mantle of taking quality responsibility on their young shoulders, I send my comfort-rigor lines so it can give them a taste of the world they eye. To the other gang of minds who want a share of what being at the top feels like with a clear intuition of popularity and self-recognition, I say, listen, take your time and read along.

From my dearest corner, my gaze ushers the direction to capturing the first thing an individual aspiring for a position need to ask himself. The first thing is asking yourself how capable and ready you are concerning your ambitious post. Questions like, do I possess the necessary requirements or features to render this particular service to my fellow students? What is/are driving my ambition(s)? What are the things I feel I can do better than the current person holding such position? How well do I think I can produce positive results and deliver when all has been said and done? The level of providing sincere and confident answers to these defining questions will surely direct your step and increase your optimism.

In case you aren’t thinking along this angle, getting voted in calls for total commitment which means you have to work both day and night for the betterment of those you serve. Your cognitive process must be directed to the fulfillment of your duties, putting your manifesto to active work and exercising your constitutional duties. Also, the act of setting balance between academics and this role you aspire is another essential part to take note. Almost all your precious time will be spent in discharging your duties during the day (that’s if you are ready to be committed), there will be no room to bank on academics as an excuse for your incapability as you are well aware it’s going to be a great challenge making this combination.

The blueprint of activities surrounding your aspiring position is expected of your possessions. Meet the person who at present hold that seat and make measures about the essential things you need to know. You also get to know what his agenda were in line with those he has been able to execute so as to ensure a positive continuity to a large extent. Do not forget to identify the challenges such individual encountered and seek solutions to this in case you come across such later on (when elected). Seek for more wisdom by asking questions, equip your knowledge and understand the basis of the position you aspire.

Note that this activity isn’t a do or die affair and it is not a game of guarantee. The chances are based on 50-50 ratio. So, in your mind, always make it filled with the thought of you attaining the post or things going the opposite direction, this will prevent you from engaging in nasty things to win. Do not be devastated when things go wrong or when it fails to work your way, never let it affect other areas of your life, take things lightly and continue to place your academics as your top priority.

The posts of discharging duties are what you set your eyes upon, they are not arena to gain followers, popularity or fame. It is a stage where you are expected to deliver and carry out the plans you’ve outline to execute. But for now, I am in veil of what your thoughts are in relation to elections and how to make them (students) vote for you. But, my admonition to you is, do everything that seems moral and right, don’t force things to work, just allow things to make the transactions while you pursue your interest (with academics in mind) in the moral manner.

It is my responsibility to write, it is same for you to listen. I will be back on this in the next couple of weeks, till then, I give this a break.

NEED FOR ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY: THE FACE OF ‘FEEDBACK MEETING’

By: The Scribe

In the context of every government and organizational establishment lies the trade of checks and balances where one serves as a watch on another so as to ensure an all-round adequacy and competence. As a result of this, it (checks and balances) has been used over time because of the result it produces and how long it has proved to been a measuring rope that connects every parts and segments together in terms of internal assessment. The line is also extended to the press category who are bestowed the role of serving as watch dog which ranges from constructive criticisms, keeping tabs on daily activities, ensuring agendas are being fulfilled and showing the sense of their active presence which gives office holders the idea that they are being watched.

NEED FOR ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY

ASSESA as a body with various arm and section that makes it a whole is not left out in this custom, there live the act of checks and balances within the arms and also the press being as watch dog to ensure they are active as per duties and responsibilities. This brought about the notion in subjecting office holders to scrutiny which thus opens room for accountability of their engagements. For they’ve promised through their manifesto to be diligently serve the entire department and also represent the department well in their tasks and activities. Not only is it of necessary for the press to be aware but for the entire Assesa department being updatedon the present state of the association.

A section tagged “FEEDBACK MEETING” was introduced and organized by Assesa press where executives, legislators (Honorable members of the department in FLC), stakeholders, level representatives and press members were on ground to witness the state of the association to know what has been done, what they are working on and what is left to be done. It was also a section that includes the need for office holders to share any challenge they might be facing which handcuffs their performance. Therefore, in line with their manifestoes as promised, there is need to table their works into limelight so as to foreground accountability and transparency which will also put them on toes in their charge and commitment to their duties.

FEEDBACK MEETING

On a general and all-round note, executive members have shown alarming signs of experience deficiency as a very few percentage possess a foundational expertise in political office roles. But there is always a first for everything but being the first does not connote a bad start, there are room to prepare ahead and learn on the motion. Well, perhaps the administration story would have been more engaging if there were no Asuu strike and constitution amendment confusions which might have affectedthe administration in settling down for the business at hand. In all, there must be the realization that they’ve been charged to this duty and must at every time show the spirit of commitment in carting out their responsibilities.

During the section held at A313 on Friday, March 25th, 2023, the FLC (Faculty Legislative Council) department representatives and executives were subject to accountability where series of highs and lows emerged. In line withthis, the followings were realized.

FLC DEPARTMENT REPRESENTATIVES

Hon. Ogunmefun Samuel: By his presentation, he claimed not to have moved any motion as promised in his number 3 manifesto which reads “I shall move a motion that will benefit all Assesaites and the whole educators in general.”, he claimed the 4 sittings held by FLC were all on approval of budgets which has handicapped him from moving motions. As this didn’t present an encouraged representation, Hon. Ogumefun is advised to show more dedication and safeguard Assesaites interest as pronounced in his number 1 manifesto – “I shall represent and safeguard the interest of Assesaites in the council”, or else tagged as a figure head honourable.

Hon. Isaac Boluwatife: As an honourable member who was elected through by-election, his manifesto was in veil from press members and the entire department. Hon. Isaac Boluwatife, according to his words, is on the motion of sponsoring a bill that sets to be favourable to the entire faculty. Being the chairman of planning and budget committee at the FLC, he is expected to do much better knowing that it is Assesa first before anything and be in conscious that he is representing Assesaites whose interest is expected of him to have in his mind.

Rt. Hon. IjaiyaAderomola: Absent

EXECUTIVES

Ass. Gen. Secretary – (BuariOmolola):  Absent

Public Relations Officer – (AgunloyeAdejumobi): In accordance to her manifesto, she promised to promote the image of the department, support every entrepreneur in the department, share contents through the editorial board and work on uniting and ensuring active participation of all Assesaites. She has so far displayed act of responsibility in carrying out these duties online by keeping Assesaites updated and helping entrepreneur in publicizing and giving advice on the development of such business. As it is was seen that few numbers of Assesaites react to her online broadcast, engaging them physically will further help in reaching out and knowing the minds of Assesaites.

Also, there seem to be a loophole in the birthday shouts out as it was expected that it will be a graphical presentation and not just word content broadcast. It was seen that the lack of graphic designers who will be in position to sacrifice for the department is affecting this, in sense, there is need to be on look out for more hands that will help in aiding this and other events as it concerns the department. There were claims that Assesaites are in some way difficult to serve but as regards dealings with human beings, it is not always expected to be that easy. E-magazine and more physical interactions are expected from her office during the remaining weeks of the semester.

Social Director – (Adebisi Olatomiwa): The office of the social director is one where 70% of the activities is carried out towards the end of the semester as regards the department week, dinner and finalist week. So far, the office in line with constitutional duties and manifesto has been able to organize orientation and picnic for freshers. Currently, the office is working on organizing an excursion trip to three places in Abeokuta for interested Assesaites. Here, it was seen that the opinions of Assesaites was not reached before concluding on the said event which negates the contents of her number 2 manifesto which reads, “I would try and make sure that Assesaites have a say in the events and trips that we will organize”.

Also, the excursion broadcast is said to be lackinglexical details of the three places meant to be visited in Abeokuta. To ensure Assesaites respond and turn up for the event and subsequent ones of such, a survey should be carried out that will serve as a measure that gives a clear picture of what they want. A google form as such has been rolled out a day after the feedback meeting asking Assesaites their opinions on either excursion or a picnic. The social director when asked about preparations towards the end of the session events promised a well packed one and also used the medium to solicit to Assesaites in turning up for their dinner fee. It is as this expected of the Social director to be on look out for sponsorship which will aid in carrying out her financial duties.

Financial Secretary – (Alade Dorcas): Out of her fourplans, two are still left unattended where the two achieved (Availability and Financial Accountability) is expected of her as per constitutional duties. Partnership with banks and organizing seminars on savings and investment are yet to be carried out and are also weakening in terms offeasibility. All through the first semester till this moment, she is yet to make a move in partnering with banks for students in the department. When asked about when to expect it, she showed no sign of urgency.

On savings and investment seminar, this is also yet to be in place and arms are still crossed in expectant. The financial secretary is hereby advised and expected to show a positive sign towards the fulfilment of her promised agendas asfailure of such will amount to being of incompetence in a role she has been politically entrusted to. Also, this will amount to a record of failed promises as such will be heavily frown at through publications of how these plans meant to have been implementedsince first semester failed.

Treasurer – (AgoyeOluwafemi): As of this office, the plans stated according to the manifesto presented are the creation of online payment and receipt of dues, creation of a financial spreadsheet where daily activities of the department’s financial records shall be accounted for, procurement of scholarship and lastly the provision of feasible solution to the association’s financial treasury issues. It is to be agreed that the treasurer is yet to fulfill any of these plans, although the last plan is being hindered by NIN issues, change of account’s phone number and the ongoing cashless policy.

When asked of the failure in discharging the remaining plans, the treasurer claimed to have failed in carrying out these plans as some problems were encountered. It was found that the treasurer failed in carrying out a feasibility study during the process of writing the plans and as such became a failed project as per implementation. The press body will also place a watch on his office in order to ensure part of the plans which can still be carried out are implemented.

General Secretary –(Adetola Oluwatosin): In ensuring an open and accessible secretariat to Assesaites, the General Secretaryhas been discharging this constitutional duty alongside proper documentation of the administrative procedures. As of her number 2 manifesto – Organizing academic summit to foster student/lecturer and alumni intellectual interaction, the department are still in expectant of this and arms are crossed in expectant. According to her, it is expected to come to light towards the end of the semester.

Vice President – (Oshinyemi Promise): In line with her constitutional duties, she has been working together with the PRO in publicizing activities and events of the department (birthday shout outs, events, etc.). The vice president promised to create a suggestion box that will aid Assesaites in expressing their minds on department related issues. This failed as she claimed there is no place around the secretariat to place the suggestion box, as a result of this, she claimed to be working on a google form that will serve in place of the failed suggestion box creation.

In accordance to her number4c manifesto that centered on introducing a Year Book which shall be sponsored, the contents of such will be pictures of events that occurred during the course of the session. Also, under her office, she promised to deliver a well-presented Career day and trade fair during Assesa week.

President – (Adetoun Adepoju): On matters relating to tutorials, due to the vacancy of the post of Academic and Welfare Director, tutorials is said to be lacking as we’ve only experience one tutorial throughout the first semester. The president gave clarifications on the point that there was a late creation of the committee meant to take charge of the office. Part of the plans carried out through this office is the creation of a CGPA calculator and working together with other executives in ensuring a workable administration.

On statistics of students who has paid for dues, about 300+ out of 600+ has paid their dues while a figure as low as less than 30 has paid for dinner. This, according to the president, is due to the optional clause placed on the payment of shirt and dinner. The entire administration are as such charged to physically engage students, encourage them to make payment and also work towards organizing a well-deserved events which Assesaites will be pleased with.
