NUESA FLC AND ITS TRUE QUESTIONABLE PICTURE ON OLADIGBOLU TAOFEEK’s DISCLAIMER

By: The Scribe

Owing to the recent resolution of the Union of Campus Journalist, University of Ibadan Senate, on its decision to remove Oladigboolu Taofeek from his position as the Editor-in-Chief of Nuesa press and disclaimed as a campus journalist, there seem to be multiple plays as expected, or say unexpected from some party.

Let’s save ourselves from the story of how the clear and well detailed charges petitioned against him contained in the clarified 114 pages petition sent to the UCJ UI Senate. Let’s drive our focus to the recent play from the camp of Nuesa FLC. On the morning of Monday, March 04, 2024, two days after UCJUI Senate’s resolution and public disclaimer, the house launched a questionable and vague release that seeks to question the verdict passed by the UCJUI Senate.

Here, it’s necessary to open the eyes of the public and FLC members to some clarifications. These clarifications will as a matter of fact question the press release of the Nuesa FLC after it’s claimed ‘online emergency sitting’ yesterday night.

One, there is a clear legal statement (backed by the Nuesa and UCJ constitution) that expressly stresses the independence of the press to run its affairs and make its own decisions. That the Nuesa FLC is even trying to question the resolution of UCJUI Senate, which is the highest decision making body of UCJUI will be termed a FLC with a question mark on their knowledge if they can’t clearly understand the concept of independence.

Two, that after reading through a petition of 114 pages filled with several pieces of evidence to back every count of allegations placed on the former Nuesa Press E-in-C and still felt the 5 hours sitting of the UCJ Senate was just a run of play, their knowledge of what they possess should be questioned. Perhaps the Nuesa FLC are ignorant of the fact that Oladigbolu Taofeek before the UCJ Senate disciplinary committee and UCJ Senators admitted to every of the allegations placed against him in the petition.

Three, there is a skeleton in the cupboard of Nuesa FLC; say the Nuesa FLC Speaker. That the Nuesa FLC Speaker was at the UCJ Senate Sitting to stand as witness for Mr. Oladigbolu Taofeek on allegations placed against him signified the position of the Speaker and say, the Nuesa FLC. This kind of attitude and reaction from the Nuesa FLC further spell the position of the house to being on the side of Mr. Taofeek Oladigbolu on the allegations placed against him; most especially the misappropriation of funds and the paddling of the Nuesa Press Budget.

It should also be noted that an evidence was submitted by Mr. Taofeek on Saturday which bears the office of the Nuesa FLC. The evidence was a statement of clarification that seeks to address the budget having two figures of 132,550 and 110,100 naira. With these aligning connections, it’s safe to say the Nuesa FLC are on tab to really question the resolution of the UCJ Senate and see it as false.

Now to the FLC call for investigation. Does Nuesa FLC have the authority to even venture into the investigation? Technically No. It is a No as Nuesa FLC cannot have a hand on those who signed the petition. Here’s the explanation. Nuesa FLC’s only concern (the items they can investigate on) are the allegations on funds misappropriation and budget paddling. Both allegations can only be explained and explained by the alleged individual as he was the only one that drafted, received and presented the budget. As far as the allegations Nuesa FLC can investigate is concerned, they have insufficient tools to launch that investigation.

The UCJ Senate has done enough justice to tick the dots and run through the petition. For Nuesa FLC, staying interested and launching an investigation on the matter speaks of their questionable stance on this already solved issue.

The Road to Personal Development: How to Move from Here to There

By: Enny

Every single person on Earth, even the ones we think are already made keep striving to be more. Why? It still boils down to the fact that human needs are insatiable. Yet, the sad reality is that some never get where they aspire to be. If you don’t want to be among them, it’s time to take action. Keep reading to find out how to make your imaginations come true!

Say No To Procrastination

You’ve probably heard about this before but what did you do? Are you still a master of procrastination? If yes, it’s still not get up and do something before it destroys your future ambitions. Every second, minute, hour and day you waste is instrumental to your growth. The best way to conquer procrastination is just get up and do what you’re supposed to do. Don’t think about the hurdles you will face. Just start somewhere and you’ll realize things become easier as you press further.

Dedicate Time To Reading Books

During my primary school days, I used to think my teachers only told us, “Readers are Leaders” just to encourage us to read our school books. Now, I understand better than that. In real life, readers are truly leaders and it’s not academic books alone. Also, it doesn’t mean leaders in the academic or political space alone. In any area you want to attain growth, it’s important to read helpful books about the field. Still, you should only select those written by experts in the field who have gotten results.

Aspire To Be Better

One of the huge mistakes we’re making or have made at some point in our lives is to take credit for past successes and remain there. If you really want to grow, you must look beyond your current status. No matter the height you’ve attained, don’t stay there. If you wish to move to the next level, you must put in extra work to reach where you want to be. It aligns with the saying that you can’t keep doing things the same way and expect a different result. It’s time to try something new!

Don’t Be Afraid To Make Mistakes

It’s not a curse but you’re going to make tons of mistakes on your road to personal development. Mistakes provide an avenue for you to learn certain lessons and see things in a new light. Truly, mistakes can be discouraging but don’t let it completely discourage you from pressing further. Yet, be open to stay away from mistakes that could have been avoided. For instance, if an expert in your industry advises you not to make certain decisions because they’ve tried it and didn’t get results, the best option may be to listen to them.

Don’t Be Afraid To Fail

What’s this writer saying, you may wonder. Is she in her right senses? I sure am. Fortunately, I have facts to back up my claim. Many great inventors failed greatly before they finally succeeded so what makes you different? For instance, Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone struggled for nearly a decade before he could get his ideas off the ground. In most cases, successes don’t come without previous failures. So even if your best idea has failed, don’t give up. Of course, it’s okay to feel a little down but don’t stay that way for too long. It’s time to pick up the pieces and move on.

Put In More Work Than You Ever Did

Want to achieve success without working hard? That’s definitely a joke! If you want a different kind of success, you need to put in the work. This doesn’t imply you have to push yourself to the extent of your body breaking down but you still have to work. Rather than spend all your leisure hours scrolling through Tiktok and Instagram, do something that will add more value to your life. This can be in the form of practicing your skills, reading books or watching YouTube videos from experts. Don’t enrich content creators alone, you need to enrich yourself as well.

Grow At Your Own Pace

Human beings aren’t the same. Little wonder why we have different birth dates and body features. As such, we can’t possibly grow at the same rate. This is why some babies still crawl when their mates have started walking. Definitely, it’s hard seeing your mates grow when you’re still at the same spot but you mustn’t be discouraged. Using another person’s yardstick to measure your life is putting yourself under unnecessary pressure.

Your road to personal development shouldn’t end with this article. As mentioned earlier, if you want more success, you need to do more. Most importantly, you won’t grow if you just gather knowledge and never utilize it. The most important aspect of self development is doing something. No matter how little or big, it will take you a step further to your dreams.

Roll Check: Is Social Media Doing More Harm Than Good?

By: Enny

The first time I grabbed my phone to write this article, I was excited to pen something down but the high energy I had got redirected when I got a message from WhatsApp. Interestingly, I didn’t get back to writing till thirty minutes later. Now, you see why it’s necessary to talk about the impact social media is making in our everchanging world! Before doing that, let’s briefly look into the brief definition and history of social media in Nigeria.

As we all know, social media are mediums of interaction through which we create, share and exchange vital information using virtual networks with the aid of internet connection. A more advanced definition by McCay-Peet and Quan-Haase (2017: 17) depict that, ” Social media are web-based services that allow individuals, communities, and organizations to collaborate, connect, interact, and build community by enabling them to create, co-create, modifies, share, and engage with user-generated content that is easily accessible.

Growing up, most of our parents derived fun from playing Nigerian version of hide and seek with their peers, pretending to be adults, listening to records or watching monochrome televisions. It was not until the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) decided to offer 38 internet providers licenses in 1996 that the internet penetrated Nigeria. Thereafter, several social media platforms and blogs penetrated the communication industry.

Even a nerd like me knows 2go was the trend back in the day even though I never actually opened an account but didn’t miss out on Facebook. Currently, there are more social media applications, of which its impossible to create accounts on each of them and be highly effective except you have a social media manager. These include WhatsApp, Instagram, X, Tiktok, just to name a few.

Having looked into the history of social media, it’s crucial to discuss what has kept them going so far. The first obvious one is connection. These apps did a great job of making it easier for people to keep in touch with their loved ones, no matter how far or near they are. Imagine how life would have been if your mom or dad travels abroad and you can’t chat or video call them whenever you like?

Despite starting with person to person connection, social media has also made it possible for business owners to connect. Either they need to find businesses to offer them specific services or new clients, business owners can do so much with social media. It’s quite obvious most studentprenurs on campus thrive because they engage in social media marketing which is less costly.

What about career opportunities? Years ago, parents would have frowned upon the decision of theur child to become a social media manager but it’s currently a promising career. The interesting thing about it is that anyone engaging in this activity may not need to leave the comfort of their homes, yet be able to make enough to pay their bills.

As much as social media as influenced our world, it also has its downsides. Most people now spend time that would have been more productive going through never ending video and pictures content on various social media platforms. The problem is that they never get satisfied regardless of the amount of content consumed. There is always a quest for more and more.

Social media has also become one of the online platforms with the highest cases of cyber bullying. According to a publication made by The Sun Newspaper, a lady identified as Jessica Adebayo experienced cyber attacks following her decision to reject a friend request from an anonymous profile on a social media platform. Hers and many other cases are a testament to how the use of social media can be a great threat to one’s security and reputation.

Regardless of its dark sides, it’s a fact that social media has come to stay and will keep being a part of our lives for years to come. This is why it’s important for the government to enact stricter laws with more complex punishment for cyber bullies so they can be discouraged from the further pursuance of their destructive activities.

Still, the onus is not on the government alone. As individuals, we must strive to desist from abusing the use of these platforms. We can achieve this by scheduling the amount of time to spend on them daily. Most importantly, we should be keen on embracing its benefits for our personal development and report even the mildest cases of cyber bullying so they can serve as a lesson to others.

The Ultimate Guide To Being Eco-friendly As A Student (2)

By: Enny

In the previous publication, we talked about how important it is for us to be eco-friendly so we can save the earth and its components for the future generation. We learnt that failure to do so will cause an increase in global warming and make us more susceptible to diseases like cancer. Here, we’ll look at effective ways to be environmentally conservative. Some of these include:

Embrace Recycling
Do you buy too many things within a short period of time? If so, there is a chance that your wardrobe is clustered with clothes you don’t wear, or hobby supplies you no longer find interesting. When these things are not properly disposed of, they contribute to environmental problems. An effective way to get rid of items you no longer need is to hand them over to a trusted recycling organization. The cool thing about this is that you’ll get a monetary reward in return. For instance, RecycleEdge offers cash for plastic containers like water and drink bottles.

Adjust Your Purchasing Habits
High consumption of natural resources begins with excessive spending. As you spend more, the amount of resources needed to produce the items you purchase will increase. The easiest way to overcome this habit is to buy less and go for quality products so they can last longer. For instance, it’s preferable to invest in cotton hand towels instead of paper towels because they last longer.

Limit The Use Of Single-use Plastics
The characteristics of plastic including being lightweight, cheap and long-lasting has made it a common material for packaging both food and drink items. Still, it causes catastrophic harm to the ecosystem when its use and disposal is not properly managed. One of the best ways to reduce your use of plastics is to go for short-lived plastic disposables. For instance, you can invest in a water bottle and eat with flatware and porcelain plates instead of disposable ones.

Eat Less Meat
Raising livestock requires cutting down forests for pasture land and growing grains to feed them. When lands are cleared for grazing, it increases the risk of soil erosion. Asides that, there are morally questionable practices prevalent in industrial meat production which are responsible for certain economic, and environmental health issues. It’s also likely that the Earth’s population will hit 10 billion by 2050 and we won’t be able to produce as much meat as we do now.

Plant a Tree
When done correctly, planting trees has its rewards. An estimated 3 trillion trees are currently occupying the earth yet scientists estimated that additional 1 trillion trees are required to slow down climate change and capture greenhouse gasses. Still, you need to plant the right kind of tree after you’ve made the decision to help save the earth. This is why you should make research on the right kind of tree that fits your locality before pursuing your plan.

Join the Clean Energy Movement
With renewable energy becoming cheaper than traditional forms of energy, clean energy adoption is gaining more grounds in different parts of the world. Therefore, it’s highly possible that alternative forms of power like solar, wind, geothermal energy and bioenergy will soon overtake fossil fuel usage which increases the risk of global warming. This is why it’s advisable to invest in the growth of green energy online today.

Educate People About Environmental Conservation
Saving the earth isn’t something that can be achieved with just the effort of a single person. Therefore, it’s crucial for you to share the message to others around you. This is why you need to consistently educate yourself about the subject so you can provide sufficient information to pass to others. In addition, you can join clubs who are passionate about this cause or start one.

It’s definitely a good idea to become an advocate of the green lifestyle after learning about the implication of wasting resources. Still, you shouldn’t beat yourself up if you don’t get it the first time. The best thing is not to stop pushing until you get things right. If you have more contributions or you want to ask questions, don’t forget to type them in the comment session.

Why You Should Be Eco-friendly

By: Enny

During the previous year, a company introduced the Green Campus Initiative to the University of Ibadan in order to encourage students to be eco-friendly. Unfortunately, many still do not understand this concept. The Earth is facing worse danger than it was in the previous decades. According to a UN report, the consumption of natural resources has tripled. For this reason, it is important for us to understand the importance of being eco-friendly. Some of these include:

Preserving the Environment
The main importance of being eco-friendly is to preserve the environment. For years, we’ve been combating our environment. You may wonder how this has been happening. From releasing noxious pollutants into the environment to deforestation, we’ve been eating a self-destructive war against our planet, which can lead to its end. This is why we must lessen deforestation and put our lands to better use by planting trees. These trees provide oxygen which humans need and cleanse the atmosphere of carbon dioxide.

Improving Human Lives
Eco-warriors are primarily concerned about creating a better world for the current and future generations. Through dangerous environmental practices, humans expose themselves to harmful chemicals that reduce the quality of life as time goes on. This is why the number of patients with cancer and other other life-threatening diseases have increased.

Reducing Waste Production
Water disposal is one of the major challenges facing the world. As the population of human beings has increased, so has the amount of waste produced on a daily basis. The increase in waste production has made room for wrongful disposal, which contaminates natural resources like water. A common example is the disposal of plastics and sewage in water, which makes it unfit for drinking, swimming, bathing and other related activities. This is why it’s advisable to recycle used products and make your own compost.

Saving Energy
As mentioned earlier, humans are consuming more energy than the earth can replenish. Still, you can reduce the amount of energy consumed by reducing the use of energy-consuming products and embracing products that require less energy. For instance, products made with plastic require tons of energy.

Saving Money
Most people think going green means breaking your bank to save the Earth. In reality, the reverse is the case. Being energy conscious means you won’t use as much gas or electricity as you used to. You’ll also encourage other members of your household to do the same.

Better Coping Mechanisms With Eco Anxiety
Even if climate change is not in your control, you can still contribute greatly to saving the planet. A little effort goes a long way so instead of stressing over what you’ve done, prepare to bring about a change. Switching to eco-friendly food, accessories, and activities is the right way to go.

It’s a wrong notion to think green living is just for some particular group of people. Green living is for each and everyone one of us! We need to save our dying planet through carpooling and using ‘green’ products. Get working now! Tomorrow might be too late!

“Navigating the Blogosphere: A Candid Tale of Three Mistakes I Made as a Newbie Blogger”

By Ayinke.

Embarking on my journey as a blogger was not a conscious decision fueled by a burning passion for writing. I stumbled into the blogosphere with a vague desire to express myself, blissfully ignorant of the intricacies that awaited. In my earnest pursuit, I made three crucial mistakes that, in hindsight, serve as valuable lessons for aspiring bloggers.

1. The Niche Conundrum
My first misstep was the oblivious neglect of what experts touted as the “niche.” The term sounded foreign, and I fumbled with its pronunciation, let alone grasping its significance. My initial rationale was simple – I wanted to write, to refine my skills, assuming that the world would flock to read my eclectic musings.

Little did I know that without a focused niche, my blog would be lost in the vast expanse of the internet. Audience engagement eluded me, and my site struggled for visibility. It became apparent that, unlike a general pursuit of writing, a defined niche was the compass guiding bloggers through the tumultuous seas of cyberspace.

Lesson learned: As a newbie blogger, identifying a niche is paramount for audience engagement and rapid page visibility.

2. The Keyword Abyss
In my writing escapades, I blissfully disregarded the existence of keywords, Google algorithms, and the enigma called SEO. My content resembled an exam paper for an absentminded lecturer rather than a strategically crafted piece meant for digital consumption.

The realization hit hard – writing alone wouldn’t cut it. My lack of keyword research knowledge crippled my blog’s potential for growth. It was a crash course in understanding that starting a blog demanded more than just passion; it required a profound understanding of SEO principles and the art of weaving keywords seamlessly into the narrative.

Lesson learned: Delve into the realm of keyword research; it’s not just a skill; it’s a pivotal course for blog writing success.

3. The Hosting Platform problem
To make my blogging mishaps even worse, I selected a hosting platform without thinking about how easily I could use it or whether it would work with Google’s algorithms. It was as though I had voluntarily decided to travel across unknown countries without a map.

Although Blogger’s simplicity is a comfort to me now, my first pick was a confusing maze. If I had chosen WordPress right on, I could have avoided the problems I ran across with Blogger. Investigating hosting sites is more than just a formality—it can make the difference between a simple trip and a difficult one.

Lesson learned: Before settling on a hosting platform, conduct thorough research. Ensure it aligns with Google algorithms, and you can navigate it with ease.

I share the traps as well as the bright spot that surfaced from the darkness of my blogging errors when I narrate these mishaps. Although there were difficulties along the way, the experience gave me a plethora of knowledge that changed the way I approached things.

I would implore you as a starting blogger positioned at the entrance to accept the knowledge I have acquired. Discover your specialty, solve the puzzle of keyword research, and select a hosting company that supports your objectives. With the correct advice, your words can echo far beyond your expectations in the wide terrain that is the blogosphere.

Ultimately, I learned from my blogging journey that striving for growth is a continuous journey. Writing isn’t enough; you also need to craft just about writing; it’s about developing a story that skillfully combines strategy and passion. I hope the lessons I’ve provided can brighten your path and help your messages find the right audience in the always changing digital landscape.

Being a UI student is more than just passing JAMB and Post Utme caught off mark. For you to exude the excellence traits of our prestigious university, you need to possess certain qualities. These qualities have assisted several generations of UI students and still remain relevant till today. Some of them include:

Ability To Communicate Effectively

It’s important for you to be able to communicate effectively as a UI student. For starters, you’ll need to express your feelings orally with your coursemates to avoid misunderstandings. In class, you’ll need to voice out to your lecturers if you don’t understand any part of their lesson. Some courses may also require you to give oral presentations and get marks in return. Effective communication is also important for socializing and making the most of your university experience. If you’ve noticed, the most impactful and successful students on campus are those who communicate well.

Ability To Work Hard
Don’t deceive yourself. Succeeding in UI requires hard work. If you want to stand out among your pairs, you need extra work. No, you won’t just focus on reading your notebooks and abandon classes. You need to balance all sides to get the expected result. Asides that, you must be ready to help others. The more you do so, the more you grow.

Ability To Think Creatively
Most people think being creative is only limited to a special category of people but that’s not true! You can be creative if you’re intentional about it. The first rule of being creative is to think outside the box. One of the most effective ways to achieve this is to think beyond what someone has achieved already. Some other activities that can help improve your creativity include reading, researching, interviewing, brainstorming and observing.

Ability To Withstand Pressure
In the university of Ibadan, pressure can come from different angles. Academic pressure is the highest level of pressure a student can face and it’s inevitable. This kind of pressure must be confronted with a calm head and peaceful mind to attain the desired result. Asides that, you may face pressure when trying to perform your official duties but you still mustn’t bow. Your friends can also annoy you through their spoken words and actions. Rather than say anything you’d later regret, it’s better not to say anything until you’re calmer.

Ability To Manage Relationships
It’s no news that your primary objective in university is to study. But even at that, along the way, you’ll get involved in different kinds of relationships. Whether it’s a lecturer-student relationship or student-student relationship, you must know how to manage it well. When you do that, you’ll definitely get good results. Otherwise, it has repercussions. Some of the ways to maintain good relationships with people in the university community is to mind how you talk to people, show respect and be concerned about their welfare.

Ability To Manage Time Well
You only have 24 hours to achieve your goals daily and there’s no sign that this will change very soon. So it’s quite important to make good use of this ample time you have. It begins with having a schedule and following up diligently. You’re also encouraged to carry out tasks according to their order of importance and avoid tasks that have no relevance. Most importantly, you should avoid procrastination and laziness because they are enemies of time.

Ability To Solve Problems
The university is not just a place to come without making any form of impact. Therefore, no matter how little, you must cultivate the habit of showing empathy for others and helping to solve their problems. There are various students going through challenges like financial, academic and social challenges. Sometimes, you may not even need to spend money. You can just organize programmes where these individuals can learn skills that will solve their problems or connect them with those that can help their situation.

Ability To Lead And Take Responsibility
Normally, being able to leave home and live on your own without your parents exercising much doubt or worry shows you’re responsible to some extent. Still, you must build upon this skill. When asked to handle more simple tasks like being a course rep or complex ones such as the president of a faculty, you must put your heart, soul and body into it. If you leave all the work to your followers or blame them for your failure, you won’t get anywhere. So when put in a leadership position, you should take responsibility for your actions and others. Never stop pushing your team members until you achieve the desired goal.

Ability To Stay Organized
This is a difficult feat for most students to achieve yet it’s not impossible. Some students may be organized during the first few weeks of class then it becomes difficult to keep up as the semester comes to a close. Organization can be different from being neat but each deals with concrete and effective systems. If you want to be an organized student, it’s advisable to keep materials for a certain class in the same place, study in a controlled manner and create separate folders for different courses on your computer. You should also figure out what time of the day is best for you to study.

Ability To Listen Well
Most people claim to listen but unfortunately they only hear sounds. Effective listening entails being able to deduce important points from what a speaker has said and react or refer back to it when the situation arises. The most important place you need to employ effective listening is the lecture room. In addition, you should listen patiently when discussing with your course mates or friends. The thought that someone’s opinion matters to you and will benefit you can encourage you to listen more. Remember, no one knows it all.

Ability To Think Critically
There are lots of ideologies you’ll come across on campus, either good or bad. Sometimes, some ideologies may be good for someone else yet bad for you. Therefore, if anyone comes to you with any idea, you must take your time to carefully observe them before taking the next action. Critical thinking and drawing conclusions about a decision may not necessarily be achieved on the same day. You should take your time to examine the pros and cons of ideologies or decisions.

In this article, we’ve examined some of the essential qualities that students of the prestigious university of Ibadan must possess. Do you think we’re right or wrong? Whatever your response may be, don’t hesitate to make it known in the comment session. Enjoy the rest of your week!

Should Students Get Back their Graded Work? Balancing Transparency and Academic Integrity in Higher Education

By: Ify Francis

As a student, you’ve spent hours studying and preparing for your exam or assignment. After finally receiving your grade, you’re shocked to find a low score. You know you studied hard and put in your best effort, so what could have gone wrong? You might wonder if there was a mistake in the grading, but without access to your graded work, it’s hard to know for sure. This is a dilemma that many students face, and it raises an important question: Should students have access to their graded work?

Among the company of one another, students have expressed their dissatisfaction in the policy of hoarding already graded exam scripts and left to wonder where they went wrong after seeing results that do not do justice to their efforts. Many students of the University of Ibadan are of the notion that these lecturers are rather too preoccupied with their activities ranging from research and community service to marking and grading.

This can as well be a problem especially if the lecturer is marking hundreds of scripts and might not have the time or energy to give each one the attention it deserves. It then becomes a matter of debate if there’s a real need for a system that allows students to review their graded work while still protecting the integrity of the such examination grading guidelines.

On the one hand, it’s important for students to have access to their graded work so they can learn from their mistakes and improve. Though, it’s understandable that some lecturers might want to protect the integrity of their exams and assignments by not releasing the scripts. As it styles tough to balance, it’s necessary to find a way to allow students learn from their mistakes without compromising the credibility of the course.

Having access to graded work becomes essential especially in higher education where students are expected to think critically and evaluate their own work. Without access to their graded work, students might not be able to fully understand where they went wrong and line of focus to make adjustments. Notably, with the absence of transparency, there’s a probability that grading could be unfair or inconsiderate.

However, giving students access to their graded work could have some negative effects. For example, if students are able to see the answers to questions they got wrong, they might use this information to cheat on future exams. Likewise, if students know that their work will be returned to them, they might be less likely to put in their best effort, knowing that they can always review their work later. Finally, allowing students to review their graded work could create extra work for instructors, who would have to spend time explaining their grading decisions.

A line of balance that can bring a tip of adjustment to this argument is the creation of review time by lecturers where they meet students for discussion on examination performance and areas to improve on. This might as well require a significant time of commitment from instructors, who would need to be available to meet with students to review their graded work. Additionally, some students might feel intimidated or uncomfortable discussing their work with their instructor, which could make this solution less effective.

There are a few reasons why students might feel uncomfortable discussing their grades with their instructors. For one, many students have a fear of confrontation or failure, and discussing their grades might feel like an admission of failure. Additionally, many students are used to seeing grades in black-and-white as an indicator of success, and may not be comfortable engaging in a discussion about the nuances of their performance. Finally, students may be concerned that the instructor will be critical or judgmental of their work, which could make the conversation confrontational.

Another considerable settlement is the provision of detailed feedback to students on their graded work, without actually returning the graded work itself. This could be done through written comments or a meeting with the instructor. This wil allow students to understand where they went wrong and how to improve, while also respecting the time and privacy of the instructor.

This tends to be a commendable solution as it seems to balance the need for transparency and feedback with the necessity to respect the time and privacy of instructors. However, a potential challenge with this solution might be students failing to fully understand the feedback they receive without being able to review their actual graded work.

Perhaps, the best compromise would be to allow students view their graded work with the lecturer present, so they can ask questions and get feedback without having access to the script itself. That way, the lecturer can still ensure that their exams and assignments are protected, while also helping students to learn and grow.

Conclusively, there is no easy solution to the dilemma of whether or not students should have access to their graded work. On one hand, access to graded work can be valuable for students’ learning and development. At another face, it raises concerns about cheating and the time commitment required from instructors. Ultimately, it is important to strike a balance between the needs of students and the needs of instructors. A hybrid solution, such as the ones we discussed last, could be the best way forward.

Raising Steps to Attaining an All-round Success in Second Semester

By: Enny’s Blog

The holiday did create a wonderful opportunity for us to get a well deserved break. Many were able to reconnect with loved ones and explore mind-blowing delicacies. But as much as we wanted the holiday to last forever, it’s come and gone. A new semester is upon us and we need to make it better than the last. Here are some of the tips to making this semester even more successful:

Adequate Planning

Making this new semester a profitable one begins with adequate planning which requires resuming early. When you resume early, you’ll get the opportunity to put the essential things in place before classes start so things don’t become overwhelming for you. You need to prepare your food items, clothing items and get your hair done. Additionally, you should get familiar with the courses you’re taking by going through the lecture notes, schedules and past questions.

Attending Classes

When you’re done planning, start attending classes. Don’t wait till your friends go before you do. Remember, this is UI so a lecturer can even ask you to tear a sheet of paper on the first day of class. Also ensure you pay attention in class and don’t be a nuisance so you don’t get into trouble. Even when you’re listening aptly, it’s likely you won’t still understand certain concepts so ensure you clarify to avoid future mistakes.

Attending Events Cautiously

Activities serve as one of the most effective distractions in all second semesters. They come in various forms including picnics, gyrations, debates, seminars, conferences and dinners. These activities are good for socializing which will form part of your university experience. Still, you must be careful not to lose focus. Even as you keep tabs on the latest ongoings on campus, update your academic knowledge.

Participating In Political Activities Cautiously

As a student, it’s normal for you to want to be involved in how things are run in your university by vying for a political post. While this is good, you must be careful not to let your political ambitions run your CGPA visions. There have been several past cases of political activities affecting people’s results so you need to be careful and strategic. Having a reasonable campaign manager will also help.

Paying Adequate Attention to Academic Affairs

Did you have a heartbreak over any course in the first semester? If yes, this might be causing you lack of enough motivation. Still, that doesn’t mean you should give up completely. It’s not over yet. You’re encouraged to try harder this semester and your efforts will definitely pay off! Ensure you meet with students who can help, attend tutorials and do other necessary things in order to reach your goal.

Balancing Academics and Relationship

In the course of moving to lecture theaters or socializing in botanical or love gardens, you could experience love at first sight and decide to go into a relationship. Going into a relationship can make your school life fun and be quite distracting as well so you should balance both sides. You definitely should not be going on dates when you ought to be in a lecture theater or laboratory.

Being Safety Conscious

When you’re safe and sound, it becomes easy to do whatever you want on campus. Therefore, it’s important to be security conscious at all times. Even during mornings or afternoons, stay alert. If you notice someone is stalking you, report to the right authority and avoid talking to strangers, especially those looking auspicious. Don’t also forget to avoid walking alone at odd hours. If it’s unavoidable, ensure you’re with a trustworthy friend.

Obeying Hostel Rules

Hostel rules are not intended to punish anyone. Instead, they’re meant to ensure your well-being. Therefore, it’s important for you to obey them. Some of these include not cooking in the room, avoiding violence and non-use of hot plates. If there’s any part of the rules you don’t understand, talk to your hall executives so they can explain them better.

Maintaining Healthy Friendship

Friendship can make or mar your success as a university student. Due to this reason, you must also be mindful of the friends you keep. If your friend has been exhibiting some bad traits and they refuse to stop even after warning them, it’s better to keep a distance. You should also avoid forcing friendship on people because it has emotional implications. Sometimes, friends grow apart as they grow older which is the sad reality of life.

Eating Healthier

Good food gives you part of the drive you need to pursue your goals. So if you didn’t pay attention to your nutrition last semester, it’s time for a change. Regardless of your budget, you can still get something suitable if you plan well. Say goodbye to excessive snacking and embrace healthy eating. You also need to hydrate yourself well.

Exercising Adequately

Exercise is also important for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The first thing you might have thought of after hearing the word is the gym yet you don’t necessarily have to go there before doing your thing. A walk to and fro your lecture theater is part of exercising. You can also inculcate the habit of jogging around your hostel, especially on Saturdays when there are no lectures.

Resting Adequately

Most students get so busy all through the day that they fail to rest well enough. If you’ve been doing such, you need to have a change of heart. It’s good to work hard but also detrimental to your health if you don’t balance things. Try as much as possible to follow the recommended eight hours of sleep daily. This will help you stay active during the day and rejuvenate your body system.

Performing Assigned Duty

Have you been elected as an officer at the departmental, faculty or SU level? If yes, this is the last chance to prove your worth if you’ve not been performing well. Suppose you’ve been doing well, you should strive to do better. You can achieve this by seeking both the opinion of experts and the people you’re serving on how you can perform your duties better.

The points explained above are crucial for a successful semester. Since Rome wasn’t built in a day, you may not be able to figure everything out at once. Still, you need to keep pushing until you attain the level of excellence you seek. Wishing you a successful semester!

The Effect of University Education in the Nigerian Economic Sector

By: Fagbemi Joshua

Actually, to make a strong round of discussion on the relationship that exists between University Education and the Nigerian Economic Sector without paying homage to the emergence of education in Nigeria will be a huge gap to this discussion. How does it all start? Modern day education in Nigeria started on 24th September, 1842 at Badagry following the arrival of Methodist Christian Missionaries – with Rev. Thomas Birch Freeman and Mr. and Mrs. William de Graft at the forefront – where they opened a mission and a nursery school.

Christian Missionary Society (C.M.S), founded the first secondary school in Nigeria – C.M.S Grammar School – in 1859 at Lagos. Thereafter, higher education came into the picture as education in Nigeria moved to a new stage with the establishment of Yaba Higher College in December, 1932 through a collaboration from the missionaries and Nigerian government. The move which would later result in the establishment of University College, Ibadan – the first Nigeria university, now University of Ibadan in 1948.

Other early established universities are; University of Nigeria (1960), Ahmadu Bello University (1962), University of Lagos (1962), Obafemi Awolowo University (1962), formerly known as University of Ife, University of Benin (1970), and University of Ilorin (1975).

Unarguably, the importance of university education to Nigeria as a whole cannot be overemphasized since education is the cornerstone of any economy (Adedigba, 2017). University education, at the apex of higher education categories, has been described as where human capital resources engage competitively through effective training that result in societal reformation and economic development. Notably, university education, as cited by Ofor Douglas (2022), is a series of lessons, theoretical and practical, that equip a graduate with the skills to succeed in the workforce.

In essence, it is expected of universities or the process – university education – to produce graduates who are not only skilled but mentally and adequately prepared for the workforce. Thus, university education plays a vital role in driving economic growth in Nigeria through the development of skilled workforce, fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, and attracting foreign investment. The relevance of education, as stated, to the Nigerian Economic system shall be exemplified during the course of this article.

The Nigerian Economic Sector – which was foreseen by early nationalists as multi diverse – regrettably digressed from its projected promising mark. Right after gaining independence, agriculture swiftly emerged as the centerpiece of the Nigerian economy which constituted two-third of the employment in the country. It comprised major exports like cocoa, groundnut, rubber and palm oil to become the largest agriculture in Africa between 1960 to 1970.

The 1970 oil boom after the historic civil war – 1967 to 1970 – will soon take the center stage till date which has resulted in abandoning of the agriculture and manufacturing sector. The focus on the exploration, production and exportation of oil as the bedrock of the nation’s economy resulted in her high dependence on the oil sector as the source of revenue. With 1.753 millions of barrels per day of oil (OPEC, 2022), Nigeria is the eleventh largest oil producer worldwide. It also accounts for 20% of her GDP, 90% of export value and backs about 65% of Nigeria’s budgetary revenue. According to the World Bank (2010), the rise of oil prices from 1999 to 2008 witnessed the growth of the oil sector in Nigeria making it the fastest growing in the world.

The Nigerian economy – within the above prospect – has faced a host of challenges (both in oil and non oil sector) since independence ranging from lack of adequate funding and basic infrastructure, maladministration, epileptic government policies and series of inconsistencies to support its viability. Also, the large oil boom and its revenue failed to reflect in the nation’s standard of living as Nigeria is beautified with the lowest life expectancy – 52.89 years – among OPEC countries (World Bank, 2020) with 7 of every 10 Nigerians living in poverty (Human Development Index, 2022).

In human capital development, university education plays a central role by providing individuals with the right skills, knowledge and abilities needed to be productive and resourceful. By this, education as a whole is a vital driver of economic growth and development through its process of grooming minds with technical skills such as critical thinking, creativity, innovation, problem solving and so on which as such enhances individual and career development.

Across the Nigerian scene, various individuals have benefited at large – and also contributed to the nation’s economy – from the human capital skills bestowed on them during their university education journey in Nigeria. This includes figures like Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, (Director-General, World Trade Organization), Amina J. Mohammed (Deputy Secretary-General, United Nations), Akinwumi Adesina (President, African Development Bank), Oby Ezekwesili (Former Nigeria Minister of Solid Minerals, 2005-2006 and Minister of Education 2006 – 2007), Aliko Dangote (Richest person in Africa, richest black person in the world and 94th richest person in the world) and so on.

University education has at most times driven the employment rate in Nigeria as graduates of university have higher prospects of being employed compared to other tertiary institutions counterparts. According to National Universities Commission (NUC) 2019 statistics, it was recorded that there are 174 universities in Nigeria – 79 licensed private, 46 federal, 52 state – and a 1.8million undergraduate enrollment as at the 2018/2019 academic session. With an unemployment rate of 33.3% in 2020 (NBS, March 2021), this shows that the employment rate and job creation has failed to match the enrollment rate in Nigeria universities and higher education as 69,373,025 out of 208,327,405 Nigerians are unemployed as at 2020 (NBS, 2021).

Conversely, in a news article published on Vanguard Newspaper on August 24, 2023 titled ‘Nigeria’s unemployment rate falls to 4.1%’, it was reported that the country’s unemployment rate has drastically fallen to 4.1% in Q1 2023 from a 5.3% in Q4 2022 after it was last calculated in 2020 as 33.3%.

According to another source, AP News, in a news article published on August 24, 2023 titled ‘Nigeria’s unemployment rate falls to 4.1%, using new methodology’, it was reported that the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has classified the employed in Nigeria as those working for at least 1 hour a week (which it has started using since Q4 2022) as against the former; minimum of 20 hours per week measurement it has been using (last used in 2020). This explains the reason behind the huge fall in the nation’s unemployment rate and not to mean that a large number of university graduates are now employed.

With the history of unemployment in Nigeria, university education, definitely, must rise to the rescue of the nation’s economy by fostering the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation. This can be done by fostering entrepreneurship development through different activities of students’ core education, research and community service, introducing entrepreneurship education and business plan, provision of mentors for students to help define and strengthen their opportunities, establishing connections with various industries to bring out entrepreneurial ecosystems, promoting collaboration with the private sector and so on.

In line with the above, a series of Nigerian universities have introduced successful initiatives that seek to improve job creation and employability in the country. Some of which are; Hebron Startup, an ICT entrepreneurship lab, created by Covenant university, the establishment of a center of excellence in software engineering and an ICT complex by Obafemi Awolowo University to encourage technology innovation and likewise, Forbes (2020) listed University of Lagos as the 3rd most productive school in educating entrepreneurs.

A number of graduates from Nigerian universities have as well contributed to the growth of the Nigerian economy in terms of innovation and entrepreneurship. These include; the establishment of Jobberman by Ayodeji Adewunmi, Opeyemi Awoyemi and Olalekan Olude, Yinka Adewale and Pelumi Aboluwarin founded Kudi, Somtochukwu Ifezue, Odunayo Eweniyi and Joshua Chibueze founded PiggyVest and PushCV, founding of Buycoins by Timi Ajiboye, formation of FarmCrowdy by Onyeka Akumah, and many others.

Notably, universities in Nigeria link and create a strong relationship with industries through different programs such as computer skills training, entrepreneurial training, student industrial work experience project, SIWES, internship, and workshops. These activities help graduates to be exposed, and locate a series of essential future career development to bring about professionalism in decision making and networking through the bank of experiences gathered during the process. Therefore, the connection that exists between university education and industries encourages work experiences, enhances graduates’ motivation and the development of core skills, technical skills, and good qualities. For the Nigerian economy to thrive – or keep on thriving, there is a need for a strong linkage between university education and  Nigerian industries.

Since universities are the source of human capital and drivers of entrepreneurship activities, their role in research and development is indispensable. According to Bo Göransson et al., it was stressed that ‘the ability of countries to grow and prosper will depend critically on the ability of their universities and university systems to adjust to their new roles while playing multiple roles in the development/transition process of state and creating (potential) nodes in global knowledge networks.’ This explains that the contributions of Nigerian universities to research and development of the country is necessary for a sustainable economic growth.

But, the show of this importance has translated to another story in the case of funding of Nigerian universities. Most universities are handicapped due to lack of financial strength to carry out both timely and innovative research needed for national development. This is quite evident in the yearly budgetary allocation to education – less than 7% over the past seven years – with 6.3% in 2021, 7.2% in 2022 (UNICEF 2022) and a proposed 8.8% for 2023 in December, 2022. This is quite short of the stated 26% budgetary allocation to education by UNESCO (UNICEF 2019). How then can a nation’s economy be prosperous when its show of respect to education – through annual budgetary allocation –  is in shambles?

At the wake of the funding challenges faced by Nigerian universities, they’ve not let their guards down by making quality research across various fields in contribution to the nation’s economic development. Pertinent to state that research productivity is being measured by the number of reviewed articles published by academics in institutions or research institutes. In relation to this, in the past 16 years, there have been more research publications reported in  Nigeria than any other West African country (Olumide et al, 2019). One only needs to imagine the number of articles that would have been published if adequate funding was made available.

University education and education in general is no doubt key to strong economic performance in a country. According to Global Citizens of Human Rights (2021), top countries with the best education system which has also improved their economy include Denmark, Finland, Japan, Canada, Sweden, Germany, Israel and so on. Therefore, the significance of university education and its unwavering impact to the Nigerian economy calls for an improved action from the government by introducing and implementing strategic policies and initiatives that support university education and the Nigerian economy at large.

There’s a need to improve on the annual budgetary allocation to education, invest in building technology hubs that bring about innovation among students, focus on the non-oil sector (agriculture, manufacturing, industry, etc.) to ensure a strong and diversified economy, collaborate with universities for research on topical issues in the country and solutions to the problems in nourishing the Nigerian economy, extend the scope of entrepreneurship plus student industrial training and other schemes in a bid to produce more entrepreneurs which in turn reduce the unemployment rate in Nigeria.

As stated by the iconic Nelson Mandela that “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world”, the secret to having an economy that seeks to drive a country to a  developed stage and sustain the legacy is education, most importantly, university education.

SPECIAL: November Checklist For Uites At The Wake of Examination

By: Enny’s Blog

Everyone is excited to be part of this third ember month which is a gentle reminder that ‘Santa Claus is coming to town’ soon! However, as students, we mustn’t forget what this month has in store for us amidst the excitement around us. Even as we rejoice, we must be prepared for the battle ahead – Examination. Here are some of the essential armor we need to equip ourselves with:

Mental Preparation

Mental preparation is key when it comes to preparing ahead of exams. Generally, exam times are sensitive. If you don’t want to find yourself breaking down barely after you get started, try catching a glimpse of self-help books. Read a chapter or two to boost up your morale even if there’s no time to go through the entire book. You can also decide to talk to a counselor. Yes, all these services are part of why you’re paying school fees so don’t let your money waste..(lol).. Remember, a healthy mind and brain will be able to assimilate things easily.

Physical Preparation

You definitely cannot rely on your mind alone to help you get through the hurdles of examination. Your body also needs to be sound and alert. So while you still can, develop the habit of jogging a few miles around your hostel. You don’t need to sign with the school gym before you get something going on – but might be an added advantage for you. Additionally, you should nourish your body with foods that are healthy for your brain. Some of these include fish, chocolate, groundnuts, and avocado.

Financial Preparation

This is supposed to be at the top of the list. You’re likely to consume more food and drinks during the examination period since you’ll be using your brain more. Therefore, it’s advisable to start reaching out to whoever can help with your finances now. When you do that, you’ll likely get enough to cover you for the exam period. So, don’t sleep on it! After getting the money, ensure you use it to get the essential foodstuffs and academic materials you’ll need for the exam so you don’t spend it on unnecessary things.

Attend Classes

If you’ve not been taking classes seriously, now is your last chance to try to make up to a certain extent. Who knows, your lecturer may decide to give hints as to what will likely pop up in your exam script! Besides that, attending one or more classes could save you from having to retake any course since some lecturers take attendance seriously. Additionally, some of them can be nice enough to revise all the topics they’ve treated since the beginning of the semester. Lecturers who haven’t conducted their tests will also likely do that during this period.

Attend Tutorials

There are many ‘Efiwes’ in this school, ‘no cap’ yet there are certain courses you may not be able to navigate through alone…sad face. People borrowing from ENG can relate..lol. So, it’s highly recommended to attend tutorials for courses you can’t navigate through alone. Yeah, it’s okay not to ‘know it all’ so don’t be shy or feel embarrassed to ask questions. However, since tutorials will most likely be conducted by students within your level, you must be careful not to play too much. If you go for tutorials but joke for more than half of the time, you’re not helping yourself.

Take Your Personal Study Time Seriously

Here comes the time to ‘jack’ like your life depends on it again. Tutorial alone can’t save you. So once you return from your tutorial center and rest a little, invest time and energy in mastering what you’ve learned so far. This time, you should be more focused on grabbing the most important information in any course you focus on since it’s not possible to remember every single thing word for word. Well, except for genuine. Whether it’s TDB (Reading Till Day Break), MTN (Morning Till Night Reading), or bit-by-bit reading, know what works for you and stick with it. Avoid following your friend’s pattern because it might not work for you.

Conduct Question & Answer Sessions

Reading and studying works fine but preferably, don’t let things end there. You should try to set questions for yourself on the things you’ve read or work on past questions. When you do this, you’ll get familiar with how to answer exam questions which will be of great help to you. Remember, it’s not just about reading. Lecturers are most interested in how well you present ideas when answering theoretical questions. Even for objective exams, prepare ahead of time to sharpen your critical thinking skills.

There, you have it, the essential checklist you should follow to ensure your CGPA skyrockets this semester! Still, it’s important not to overdo things because moderation is important in every aspect of life. Most importantly, ensure you start preparation on time so things won’t become overwhelming for you at the end of the day. Good luck with your exam!

Love, From Your Gorgeous Unknown Lover

Hi there,

I’m delighted you chose to read this, and if you’re reading it, it’s for you.

As a new week begins, I’ve made the decision to get my life together. To ignore thoughts of giving up, end toxic relationships, be authentic, and put a smile on my face.

I am therefore aware of whatever it is that you are currently facing. I have experienced being depressed, perplexed, and unsure of oneself. I might sound like every other voice in your mind, yet for some reason, this one might stand out.

I am aware that even when you know someone has your best interests at heart, it can be difficult to accept advice from them. I will thus state this: never listen to counsel from someone who is losing their mind.

Therefore, perhaps you shouldn’t believe me, but these are the words of someone who has broken and is trying to gather feet.

I have faith in you! I know you can succeed, I really do. Thus, rise, drink some water, have a nice shower, eat something nutritious, and get into the week’s routine.

Engage in activities that provide you constant joy. Do something good for yourself. Take on the task you’re scared to undertake.

As you start this week’s journey, remember to smile, to laugh, to have fun, and to feel good. You’re beautiful and strong, worthy of good things. Remember that I LOVE YOU and I always will.

If it seems like a trap but you’re in one already. Get out of bed, give up on the past, and face your fears (test, assignment, relationship). If you become a better person after the process, you did a good job.

Darling, go make things happen.

Love, from your gorgeous unknown lover

How To Balance Between Being A Student And Entrepreneur

By: Enny’s Blog

The life of a student entrepreneur is pretty interesting. Every day, you get to eat what you want and ball your friends whenever you want to. But is that all there is to be about being an entrepreneur? No, there are sacrifices to be made and hurdles to be crossed. What are these milestones and how can you overcome them? You’ll find out in the subsequent paragraphs.

One of the hardest parts about being an entrepreneur is that it adds more to your daily struggles. If all you do daily before is wake up, go to class and study, you’ll have to add delivery. Well, except you’re rich enough to hire a delivery man or assistant. If you’re not, you have to find a way to balance things so you don’t get kicked out of the school you fought so hard to enter.

Therefore, the best advice for a studentpreneur is to have daily schedules. When you create one each and follow through, it will help ensure at least 90% of your tasks are achieved. Fortunately, you don’t have to be carrying a jotter up and down for this reason. All you need to do is prepare it on your phone and go through it when necessary. If you’re able to finish on time, you can add other important tasks or take a break.

Procrastination is generally acknowledged as the thief of time. In this case, “time is money and CGPA”. So if you don’t want to waste any time you could have used in building the two, you should be cautious of procrastination. You are your own biggest fan and whenever it tries to set in, don’t give it a breathing space. Remember success requires extra sacrifices and humans only celebrate successful people.

No matter how orderly you are, there might be some times you have to get go of certain tasks if they will be detrimental to your studies. For instance, if you have to deliver products to a client and there’s a test allocated for the same time, it will be better to postpone that for the time being.

As a studentpreneur, it’s also advisable for you to start studying and performing other crucial academic tasks early. If you wait till exam time, it will become quite overwhelming and you may not be able to cope well. At the end of the day, you may resort to the use of caffeine which isn’t good for your health.

The importance of having good friends can’t be underestimated. Good friends can help you maintain balance by helping you with your entrepreneurial tasks. However, you must be careful with whom you ask to help with your business so there won’t be any. Only go for someone trustworthy.

Experience is the best teacher in every field. Suppose you know people who have started the business way before you did, you should reach out to them. This is so they can offer you valuable tips on how they were able to cope. Yet, you must remember all human beings are different so you should go for what works for you after experimenting with different things.

In today’s world, there are various technologies designed to make certain tasks easy for experts in various fields. Therefore, it’s crucial to keep yourself updated on the latest tools and equipment being used in your field so it can make your worker faster and better. You can also apply some energy-saving techniques. For instance, it’s preferable for a chef to get ready chip sticks instead of having to cut them yourself.

Since you’ll be exhausting more energy, you should be focused on feeding yourself a balanced diet with more of fruits and vegetables. When you eat and exercise well, it will help you stay healthy. In addition to this, ensure you rest as that when due. If you overwork yourself and you break down, it will take longer for you to recuperate.

In the past, there have been stories of students graduating with a first class even though they were businessmen on campus. This is an affirmation that you can do this as well if you set your mind to It. However, you must be willing to make the necessary sacrifices so you can achieve the desired result.

Studentpreneur: An Assurance of Future Wealth Or A Simplified Delusion?

By: Enny’s Blog

In the past few years, the number of entrepreneurs on our campus has increased. You’ll either hear “Samantha’s Treats” or “Yems Footies” approaching you on Tech Road or knocking on your hostel door to get you to buy from them. They make you believe you’re sowing into their future and you have no choice but to dip your hand into your purse, no matter how slim. Of course, entrepreneurship has indeed made a tremendous impact on the financial lives of students. However, not all is glittering about this old craft now seen as a gold mining platform.

What is entrepreneurship itself? According to Peter F. Drucker, it refers to the “process of conceiving a potentially profitable and marketable idea, designing it into a product or service, acquiring financial, material, and human resources to begin the production activity, and launching and operating it in the form of a business along with being responsible for all of the associated risks. Individuals who engage in this activity are called entrepreneurs.

As an ideal economic activity, entrepreneurship has enabled many students to earn their first income. Some eventually convert it into cash to pay for their school fee, accommodation fees, or print assignments. The smart ones among them even go as far as investing the little or much they can or saving it for the future expansion of their business. There have been several cases where students graduate only to open their office. A good example is “Matti Grills”, a UI student who started by selling “stir fry spag” in UI till he eventually opened his restaurant.

Of course, everything isn’t just about money. Entrepreneurship also allows students to express their passion and skills. How else will you know Lade can make tote bags if she doesn’t tell you or go as far as making one for you? Additionally, it allows them to develop it. This is because as the need arises to meet the needs of different kinds of clients, they’ll be inspired to acquire the needed skills to satisfy them.

Another good advantage of entrepreneurship that most people don’t recognize is the fact that it teaches responsibility. As students learn how to be responsible for themselves and other people at an early stage, it’ll be easier for them to cope with a larger workforce in the future. Through this, adjusting to the working class won’t be hard for them. The act of being responsible might not really reflect in their career but in their marital life.

Further, entrepreneurship prepares students for future business tasks. They should make mistakes and learn from them than when they’re all grown up. After school life comes with several monetary responsibilities so there may not be time for trial and error. Once all the major mistakes have been made and corrected, it will be easier to progress with their business pursuits.

As rewarding as entrepreneurship can be, it also has its downsides. The first is that it has made some students lose focus. It’s no news that many students matriculated to graduate with a first class. Unfortunately, along the way, they found a new love – “entrepreneurship” – and lose focus. It’s one of the reasons many now take “attending to customers” more seriously than ‘attending classes’.

Some students claim even as entrepreneurs, they haven’t lost sight of their first reason for seeking admission. That’s true but even at that, the daily struggles of trying to restock or deliver goods have got their attention. Even though they weren’t “tsunamized” or “eroded”, many don’t have grades they’re proud of or what they initially agreed with their parents. Only a few can keep the banner high.

The worst thing entrepreneurship has done to the academic system is make many believe it’s the only way to succeed. It’s so sad that there was a case of a student dropping out of school to focus on his business. It’s also one of the reasons some students don’t care about their grades anymore so far they’re making money. As a result, they make those who aren’t entrepreneurs feel like they’re joking with their lives.

Even though entrepreneurship is painted glamorous, the fact remains that not everyone is going to make it through this format. Unfortunately, some students fail to realize this and keep investing more money which they end up losing at the end of the day. Some students just decide to go into entrepreneurship to feel among others.

Entrepreneurship is one of the major ways but not the only way to amass wealth. Students need to first understand this so it’ll guide them in making the right decision. In other ways, ‘entrepreneurship’ is not the only way to make it in life. Before deciding to start a business, each student should assess their strengths and weaknesses to be sure they have what it takes to proceed.

No doubt, the economic state of our country has rendered some courses useless. Therefore, there is a need for the government to invest in some abandoned sectors of the economy so there can be equal opportunities for each sector and one or two sectors won’t be oversaturated. In this case, they can set up a committee to liaise with young creative minds and come up with a suitable solution.

School authorities likewise have a role to play in this range. Instead of just teaching and imparting knowledge to students, they must be enlightened on how to utilize this knowledge. Universities should encourage students to come up with creative ways to make an impact in their various fields regardless of the deplorable state of the country. After all, they’ve seen and heard stories of creative Nigerians building cars despite the state of the country.

Most importantly, students should encourage themselves to develop in their various fields. Aside from writing and debate clubs, there should be other associations for people in other fields. These associations should help students learn parts of their profession that can’t be acquired in lecture rooms and discover useful internship opportunities. They can also go as far as soliciting help from governmental or non-governmental organizations to get funds from members who want to embark on projects that will benefit society.

In conclusion, entrepreneurship is indeed a golden opportunity to create wealth for those who can properly utilize it. Yet, only those who can endure and manage risks should undertake this venture. Rather than focus on entrepreneurship alone, there should be opportunities for each person to choose the profession of their choice and work under organizations yet be able to live decently.

Chat GPT Relevance: Helping or Making Students Slothful at the Dependence on their Brain Activity

By: Enny

Understanding the relevance of Chat GPT starts with knowing its meaning. The full meaning of ChatGPT is Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer. It’s a tool that allows users to enter prompts to receive humanlike images, text, or videos made by AI. Therefore, students use this tool to get resources for assignments or project work. Unlike in the past, students are less worried about getting difficult assignments done because they trust chat GPT to help them get the right answer promptly.

Even though chat GPT has made life easier for students, it also has its downsides. A major one is the fact that the discovery of chat GPT has made many students lazy. Normally, assignments are meant to challenge students to use their creative thinking skills to get answers to the questions posed but things haven’t been the same since chat GPT arrived. Students hardly use their brains since they’ve found an easier way out of academic hurdles.

According to a research carried out by George Millar in 1956, an average person can only keep around seven items in their working memory. In her words, “Miller’s Law of seven plus-minus two means up to nine or as little as five items are the limit of a human’s processing abilities. Currently, the number has reduced to four, thanks to overreliance on technological tools, one of which is Chat GPT.

When students are lazy and unable to go through the required learning processes, there will be lapses in their academic journey. Part of the aim of education, especially in the University of Ibadan, is to help students develop the act of creative thinking. After all, its motto is “Recte sapere fons” meaning “To think straight is the fount of knowledge”. How then will students be able to think straight when they are overly dependent on Chat GPT?

Utilizing creative thinking to solve problems helps in developing students’ level of reasoning. However, Chat GPT has deprived many students of this necessity. Even simple tasks like writing informal letters can’t be carried out without the use of this AI tool. Students who are supposed to learn the format used by this tool and practice just copy and paste which doesn’t improve their level of knowledge actively.

Most students think it’s great to use AI tools to start and finish creating content but what they fail to understand is that it stunts creativity and makes a content sound similar. Each student offers a unique perspective and voice to their work. When everyone uses AI for their academic tasks, they will hardly have unique features that differentiate them from others. Also, the AI tool can sometimes remix language without understanding it properly, which causes glaring mistakes.

Information obtained through ChatGPT may seem well-written and plausible yet it may lack insight and is sometimes inaccurate or outdated. Most of ChatGPT’s training data was retrieved before September 2021 and it doesn’t reveal the source of its data or gives names of sources that don’t exist. As if that’s not enough, detecting which part of the information is factually inaccurate can be hard. ChatGPT may be trained with sufficient information, yet unable to offer answers on certain niche topics. It may also be unaware of the latest developments in the academic field.

Furthermore, a high number of writing contests and journals have been forced to close submissions due to the higher amount of ChatGPT-generated content. It’s annoying for these people and unfair to those who invested efforts and hours to craft creative writing samples. Of course, there’s nothing fun about reading different forms of write-ups generated by a machine. After all, these contests are focused on appreciating the skills and creativity of human beings.

Another downside of Chat GPT is that it can decrease the level of interaction between teachers and students in the academic community. As students are becoming more reliant on Chat GPT, they are beginning to neglect the importance of brainstorming with others to derive solutions to academic tasks.

No doubt, chat GPT has a great role to play in the academic excellence of students in the twenty-first century. This is why they need to see it as a tool to aid them in achieving academic success instead of a means of completely avoiding their academic tasks. One of the ways educational bodies can encourage students to kick against the bad side of Chat GPT is by organizing seminars where they can learn how to properly harness this tool.

Post Teachers’ Day Celebration: A Prime of Profession and Professionalism

By: The Scribe

In a world of its own surrounding the acts and works of the tradition tagged to being the origin of all walks of works, reckoning around to uphold its ignition speaks to a volume. Considering the virtues and qualities ravaging the style and format designed for the expected attributes and what it tends to project to society, this  circles not only on its significance but the necessities in our world.

In this world of our own where the potentials of the accolades meant for this tradition have been swept under the tents of inefficiency, the fact that it meant so much to some people is appreciated and seeks to quite inform other in practice of such culture. Perhaps, come the next decade or two decades, we could have a scenario where the runs of the ‘career pathfinders’ will be well registered.

Actually, not that the impacts of these men who has held to their hands the chalks – to inscribe good tidings, and duster – to cleanse off rags – in the heart of young ones have not been adequately seen, but the devils along the rail of the country’s operating system remains a wall that stands as a veil between the actual respected acts and realities.

In as much, it’s noteworthy to pen an ink of respect that put an eye across the prime of the teaching profession and likewise a toll of concise analysis that weighs the essentials of the professionalism and see what it means to the growth and development of the society, I mean, in the league of our own.

A Prime of Profession

Flipping through the pages of connections that styles the definition of the teaching profession, the literal interpretation of such verses speaks volume of the role its materilization plays in a society.

In the general context, teachers are like a potter whose role is critical and dynamic in reference to the will and expectations to make impact. They mould the live of young ones right from childhood to adolescence by spreading across a wide range of impectus that informs their career choice.

Also, teachers are agent of transmission. They serve as a bridge between the values in line with societal norms and the minds of pupils/students. The process of education thereof heavily depends on the carrier of that process – Teachers. In a sense, what makes or mar the life of a child is, of course, a vital part of teachers’ responsibilities.

Talk of the teaching profession and you tend to mention the bank of resources that births all possible careers. As a home without a strong foundation perishes, as a building without the right set of construction goes into a sudden fall, this tells of the importance of a teacher in career building. It is as a result of this unwavering significance that the celebration of the profession comes at prime.

A Prime of Professionalism

Come to think of it, should we be discussing the quality of the marked nation builders or leave it all at the hands of hope that we are safe?. By entrusting the lives of young ones in the hands of men who also operate and breathe under the air spring of the nation’s dilemma, shouldn’t we be scared? Should we dare to open the conversation surrounding the efficient level of the ‘career pathfinders’?

Many a time, the school region always mentions the presence of unqualified teachers in the basket of the teaching profession as one of the hefty problems of the Nigeria Education System. There’s also the debate that tries to defend the presence of the high unemployment percentage in the country by stressing the fact that most Nigerian graduates are said to be unemployable graduates. It tends to divulge the sense that they are indeed graduates by certificate and not by intellectuals.

Could we then rally the above discussion around the presence of inefficient teachers? Again, these unemployable graduates later tend to find their rough way through the teaching profession. In this case, are we to expect the tagged unqualified graduates to suddenly appear qualified teachers in this critical line of activity? What then – at the long run – becomes the young ones future shape?

Again, issues around the Nigeria Education System ranging from underfunding, brain drain syndrome, low remuneration for teachers, lack of adequate infrastructures to neglect from the part of government not a fall off bridge that brings about an offshoot in teachers’ devotion to this profession? Are the qualified teachers still ready to give it all even within the turbulence and thorns of the present Nigeria?

How much you tend to wonder seeing qualified teachers in government schools yet have no result to show for it. When you afterall consider the tedious task that comes with taking 17-23 periods a week with an average of 70 students per period, you might want to spare the rain of blame on these teachers. The teacher tends to feel in such a manner that what’s the point of pouring out sweats and blood when class control is almost impossible? When there is not enough infrastructure? When the pay is far from expectations? When the system is faulty.

In a prime of professionalism forming round the circles of the teaching profession, it is quite necessary to ask questions within the image of the Nigeria teaching profession as far as the education system is concerned. As much is expected from teachers in delivery as well as shaping the lives of young ones, much should be given by the government and other private bodies in uplifting the teaching profession and Nigeria education system.

On The Bank of a Mixed Feeling Activity: Student-Teachers Share Their Teaching Practice Experience

As we’ve come to the conclusion of a 6-week Teaching Practice program for student teachers at the Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan, this initiative was designed to provide student-teachers with valuable classroom experience, allowing them to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-life teaching scenarios.

This Teaching Practice session was different from the usual format, consisting of two parts. The first five weeks concluded in August, followed by the final week that ends on Friday, September 29, 2023. Consequently, student-teachers encountered a variety of mixed feeling experiences which they were eager to share as below.

“This is not my first teaching practice afterall. It was challenging to deal with unruly students but with determination to impact knowledge, I was able to overcome them. On the other hand, the early morning wake-up calls presented me with a daily hurdle.”

Benjamin Daniel, 300Lv.

“I really appreciate both the teachers and students for their warm reception of student-teachers throughout this program. I would also like to commend the supervisors for their support and advise future TP teachers to be committed and proactive in their activities.”

Timilehin Adewole, 300Lv.

“To me, the 6-week Teaching Practice was stressful, especially this last week when lectures and tests continued concurrently. In all, it was an experience of mixed feelings with both the positive and negative aspects in conjunction.”

Mariam, 400Lv.

“The entire teaching practice was a good outing and I am filled with joy at reuniting with the students in this last concluding week. It was at the same time painful to have sacrificed classes and tests in a bid to participate in this exercise.”

Opeyemi Rahji, 300Lv.

“It was a happiness filled experience having had positive relationships with students and teachers. My only concern was the workload because my cooperating teacher left most of the responsibilities in my hands.”

Adeola, 300Lv.

“My Teaching Practice experience is a combination of good and bad experiences. I appreciate the opportunity to meet new people. I feel the school should improve on their administration and work towards having a positive impact on student’s behaviour. Overall, it was a valuable experience.”

Opeyemi Bolarinwa, 400Lv.

“It was fun and quite entertaining. At least, it actually made me feel good because I was able to impact the lives of one or two of my students and I thank God for that.”

Isegun Akala, 300Lv.

“The fact that teaching practice is ending today is actually a big relief to me and the fact that my birthday is also today is more or less like a double celebration. How do I feel? I feel great, I feel amazing, I feel awesome. The fact that I’m able to teach SS2 Students, currently they are in SS3, I taught 5 of their classes of 80-90 students tells of the number of students I was able to impact on. So far, it’s amazing and nice. Although they changed my name to Terestral.“

Theresa Aiyelari, 400Lv.

“It was really educational, I learned a lot of teaching techniques and how to handle students in the classroom.”

Temidayo Deborah, 300Lv.

“My experience during the teaching practice was both pleasant and unpleasant. It is pleasant in the fact that my students in the school give me so much pleasure and they make me laugh a lot. Seeing that I am contributing to their lives positively gives me a lot of pleasure. On the other hand, it was unpleasant due to the hike in transport fare and missing classes due to the teaching practice.”

Olumide Shoyele, 400Lv.

“It has been so wonderful and glorious, l really enjoyed teaching, though I have been into teaching, before I gained admission into UI. My experience here has not been something difficult like that, it’s been so easy with the help of my Cooperating Teacher and some of my friends around. They are really trying just that they lack adequate support from their parents.  My advice here is that Teacher should encourage the parents, to help them to support them so that the students can participate well in the learning process.”

Oke Folukemi Tessy, 400Lv.

“lt has been a wonderful experience for me. During these six weeks l have been able to learn a lot, become a better person, my notion about teachers has changed to an extent, and l have been able to at least experience public school on another level. lt has helped me to have a  sense of duty as well, so far, l have been able to learn a lot from my Cooperating Teacher and she has been nice, accommodating, she has helped me to understand the students, interact with them, when to be serious and when to be jovial with them and when to give them assignments.”

Inioluwa Oladosu, 300Lv.

“It’s true what they say, experience is the best teacher, this experience has been invaluable and preparing me as a future Educator and l am so grateful to the Students and Staff of the school for making this such a  wonderful experience. They have very welcoming and accommodating and  l feel like l have learnt so much from them, l have learnt that to be successful as a Teacher we need to be dedicated, focused, and have a sense of control, it’s also important to have patience as it can be challenging to deal with students who are not engaged or motivated.”

AbdulRofiu Sulayman Akanji, 300Lv.

“It was nice, fulfilling, l got to experience teaching at higher class, which I have never done. The students were paying attention, l was expecting more rude and naughty students, but they were all really fascinated, cooperative and supportive. We also did a Career day where l got to talk to the students on Procrastination with my other Students Counselors in the school.”

Daramola Asmau, 300Lv.

So far, I can say, teaching practice experience has not really been stressful as such, being that compared to where I had my previous teaching practice, this place is closer to my place of residence.  I feel like this one week is pointless. The first five weeks we did our job, we all experienced supervision by personal and external ones. I will commend myself as well for following every guideline of the learning domain. I am positive that I will have a good score this time too.”

 Odalonu Grace, 400Lv.

“Actually, I can say it is a mixed experience for me because TP in general is stressful because at some points, I had to combine the school activities and everything with going to my TP school which can be really stressful and draining at times. However, it is a really good experience to be a teacher and being in the career path I have chosen. So, it’s a kind of good experience to have.”

Okunola John, 400Lv.

“It has been a pleasurable experience and not so pleasurable one because it has been quite challenging. We are lucky to have had the first part of the teaching practice when the school was on vacation, so coming to school for the teaching practice now and attending classes simultaneously is not something very easy. Aside from that, teaching the students has been a very good experience because I was able to learn some things from the students and also impart some information to them as well. Like, they gained from me and I gained from them.”

Dayo Philip, 300Lv.

“It’s an overwhelming experience, not all sides, a part of it is overwhelming based on the fact that I have to leave my shell of going to classes to also come down here to teach the students. Teaching is something I enjoy but I feel I was quite overwhelmed with the number of students that I am not very familiar with. This pushes me to be conscious and be the best person I can be, following the rules that guide teaching practice which one of them is not to beat the students. All in all, I can say my teaching practice experience is a sweet sour experience.”

Okelola Ezekiel Akinwunmi, 300Lv

On Defalcation of Funds and Signing of Petition: The Unclear Dramas and Need for Answers

By: The Scribe and The Unwavering Pen

So disrespecting seeing the balcony of the Faculty of Education tainted by the splashes of muddled waters. On a more serious note, the bargains and terrains of the matter at hand is a clear description of what the proclaimed learned society is becoming. I mean, ‘these’ are individuals charged with the will to lead and serve as a model for fellow students. To even think of the fact that ‘they’ sworn to the mandate of truth and transparency makes this drama more sucking and alarming.

Fellow Educators, I mean the ‘Intellectual Educators’ who are not committed to dragging the image of the faculty, let us not be dragged along with the taste of the current stound, let us do well to stay out of the box created for confusion. As I presently ruminate on seeing ‘their’ display along the face of the faculty – which I know fellow educators likewise feel, I sink ashamed and almost out of order at such display.

On misappropriation of funds – which some people have even boldly termed as robbery, and the signing of a petition – which was sudden and perhaps confusing on it’s part, let us follow this guide to unravel the disguised myth – as they have made it to seem – and the need for answers because ‘they’ must provide us with clear clarifications and the how, why and when of the matter.

Unclear Status of The Amount

The previous administration (Georgeana-Led) has had a lid of discoveries opened with new elements being uncovered. In light of the different discoveries made, there have been variations of figures on air. Some in six figures, some more than half of a million and some, looking very little. A recent release by Oladigbolu Taofeek claimed the Treasurer in question, Emeka Samuel, said the amount in question is ₦80,000 which he has paid half of it.

In a Whatsapp post by the Nuesa Current President, Sakariyau Ajibola, he made a count that the amount in question is over half a million naira. From sources – though rumours – the wave of the exact amount is as much as ₦700,000 or ₦750,000. Who knows, someone else might come to public tomorrow and say the figure in question is this amount or that amount.

There is a need for clarifications that defines the amount in question. The fact that a series of figures are being displayed is proof of how dicy and deep this issue might be. Also, it is quite easy at this point for anyone to surface and drive this into another lane. Precisely, Emeka Samuel – Former Treasurer, might have seen this loophole and use it as a source of strength right from his hideout.

Hon. Gucci’s (Sakariyau Ajibola) Display of Leadership

However, there have been concerns as to how the matter finally came into light – concern has to be given as to how this matter, as dicey as it is, was revealed. Why would a leader of a faculty leak such information through a WhatsApp status? Why would it be released in such an informal way?

Also, the President at the same time released an e-petition asking Educators to sign the petition that will see “the recently outgone Treasurer, Mr. Samuel Emeka being called to question on the account of missing amount”. First off, as a President and someone who is supposed to be viewed as a leader, the manner in which that broadcast was drafted was not professional. A formal petition should read something like, “below is a petition that will see the recently outgone Treasurer being called into question on account of misappropriation of funds and gross misconduct”.

This display really says alot about how someone who is supposed to be an esteemed leader is trying to deal with a very complicated issue based on emotions. At some point, you will question whether his executives were carried along in the decision to put out a petition about such a serious allegation since his position speaks for all. It also questions the formality of such a petition. You could even rhetorically ask, “are the management aware of this?”

Gucci’s Display of Complete Innocence?

As we know, the current Nuesa president was a key member of the former administration – having served in the post of the General Secretary. But the way he has put forward this issue looks like he had no hand in the former administration and just came in from being a lay member. If as a General Secretary, you saw no single fault in the Treasurer for the entire administration and you only then noticed the fault now, it looks like he is trying to play some sort of fast innocence.

If for any reason, one member of an administration is faulty, then the entire body is faulty and should be questioned. The current president was a member of that administration, and with all the allegations being made against, one cannot but question the level of transparency we are to expect from this administration. They are all in this uniform tainted cloth, no one in exception.

Team New Dawn’s Tainted Hands

The entire “New Dawn administration” needs to be called into question as it is a slap on their faces and disrespectful to all educators. If at the end of a tenure, an administration cannot tender tallying figures that show how funds were received and spent, the accountability of such should be called to question.

Considerably, it can be very tough for some students who struggle hard to pay for basic dues as all fingers are not equal and also, the frustration of paying dues can be really tough. With the presence of all these constraints, someone or some people still want to deprive them of the little they’re entitled to which is not fair in all sense of mannerism.

NUESA FLC 12th Assembly or 11th Assembly

The knowledge of the council honorables have also come under the line of focus. At least, the FLC in some way serves as a guide and watch on the affairs of the CEC – so, it is expected that any foul play should as a matter of concern be under notice. Also, it’s important to clarify who we should direct our grievances to under this focus, the 11th Assembly led by Rt. Hon Usman Bolarinwa (USB) or the new 12th Assembly of Rt. Hon Isaac Boluwatife (Senator Reformed)?

In a veil to distance itself from any form of allegation of incapability, the 12th Assembly rolled out a press release on Wednesday, September 20, 2023, where it publicly condemned the event and promised to work towards the goal of bringing the perpetrator(s) to book. This is in a sense a medium to clarify that the 12th Assembly has claimed to be innocent of the issues and direct the public to demand answers from the 11th Assembly.

The Audit and Budget Committee of the 11th Assembly should be called upon or perhaps form a new committee to checkmate the matter at hand so as to seek for justice and reach the core of truth. Here is a charge to both Assembly that; they should work towards finding clarifications on how much in question, who and who are involved, when did it occur and why the matter – believed to have been in darkness for a while – is just seeing light.

Petition and Public Statement

Let’s reason on why the petition needs to be signed. For the sake of fairness, I would rather say we should talk on why it should not be signed. How would you explain a petition authored by a key position holder of an administration in question of financial unclarity? That if the petition will have relevance, it should have been raised by some other person aside from the current Nuesa President.

It is unfair to play on the emotions of educators with the signing of a petition they have no full gist on. It is quite unprofessional and disrespectful to Educators, as said earlier, to sign a petition that was only made known to the public through a ‘common’ WhatApp status. Educators demand more clarifications and a proper statement of the matter at hand.

There is an urgent need to call for a congress or press conference or Town Hall Meeting that tables the matter to Educators in a more concise and understandable manner. Educators will then reason – with no form of emotional play, and see if there is a need to raise an alarm or keep low.

Editor’s Note: As a concerned Educator who is conscious of the wellbeing of his fellow ones, there is a need to constantly voice out through the medium we know best. Faculty of Education students are role models and expected to serve as such in all positive sense. That one man will come, taint the image and drag others along is unacceptable. We shall not be a puppet of muted voices because we need answers. We mean URGENT ANSWERS!

Can A Dead Man Still Walk? A Glimpse of the Fall and Proclaimed Stunted Rise of ASSE L&D

By: The Scribe

At the moment of writing this thought disturbing and engaging piece, I’m still yet to locate a definition to the current shape of a very significant arm of the department. As I mostly stress out in plain touch that the department is known for some features which reckons with her obvious style, much is earnestly expected from her sanctuary. The department at no point in time have reasons to fail in any of its various sections in as much as her obvious features are still vibrantly present.

Need to point out that the functionality of the department is solely placed on every of her facets ranging from the Central Executive Council, the Department Consultative Council, the Fourth Estate – Assessa Press, the department’s Literary and Debating Society – ASSE L&D, the stakeholders, level and option reps and also students of the department. Each has a role to play and the failure to fill in the gap will result in having a bent course of atmosphere.

Dear reader, in an honest tone, I should begin by pitching my confusion out to you. Perhaps we can solve the puzzle together since it’s a matter that concerns all Assesaites. Who do we direct our questions to for clarification? Who do we ask for a concise account of what has occurred in the past? Who do we trust for a plain and undiluted explanation on the matters at hand? When the expected figures decide to bend their head, refusing to take the blame, thereby shifting blame from here and there, who shall we get angry at?

Note that this writer will never stop to question and raise voices on the state of ASSE Literary and Debating Society unless we see the materializations expected of them. We (Assesa Press) shall never cease to bundle our words and our voices – in the best way we can – to tell of our disappointments, demands and style we want. As concerned members of the department, all we want is seeing the department properly represented in all areas which defines the frame and face of her outlook.

Notably, to put us on the same scale of understanding, we should run some background checks

In a bid to bring into our memory of what led to the tag – Can A Dead Man Still Work? – it’s necessary to visit the past, even though it’s recent. For ASSE L & D, the last session was all left to drive in a shadow of itself. Meaning that the society/club failed to materialize to their potential level and thereby cause the burning fire a cold zip. Series of reasons were stated by the then President and Speech Coach ranging from restructuring, getting new members, having an inexperienced league of hands/voice and needing a bundle of time to ignite the flame.

The argument stated then is not far fetched. It was on the basis of the fact that should the society rather use a whole session all in the name of restructuring and recruiting? Wouldn’t going off for a full session affect the consistency stance of the society? Can’t the society work with what it had, trained her proclaimed yet to be experienced members and build a strong force we expected? ‘They’ even claimed the department won’t be showing in last session’s Tug of Words.

Interestingly, the course of action taken by Assesa Press in publicly questioning these might have forced the society to show up at the Tug of Words. We felt they were forced to do this as the speakers being the President and Speech Coach gave them out. Seeing the department represented by these speakers considering their portfolio, a Bet9ja player would have ticked his paper with a permanent marker and gone to sleep in assurance. But the story was the other way round as the assumed best hands were knocked out in the first round of the competition.

Do I just read your mind and hear you say embarrassing? Yeah, your mind is absolutely right, it was indeed embarrassing and hard to take. But it wasn’t a surprise considering the face of the society from the first semester – when they’ve even had the mind not to get involved in any competition. Also, the annual L&D Day meant to be staged during the departmental week was nowhere to be found. The society systematically operated on the terrain of using excuses and expected norms to cover their maladministration and spoils.

Dear reader, please judge. Let us know if we had gone out of the box to ask the solid question, Can a Dead Man Still Walk? Should we still place our hopes and aspirations on what the ‘Society’ has for us this session? And, are we still on the old story of repainting and restructuring?

Well, it’s time for them to prove us wrong or say right their past wrongs. It’s a new terrain for the society to make exploits and get the beat rolling as we wanted. We can’t wait to see the flag of the department’s L&D flying high once again.

We will do well to tell those in charge that there is a need to start training speakers by inviting the experienced and experts in this field to come and hold training sessions. There’s also the need to set up a standard and make a definition of what ASSE L & D appears to represent. The department is filled with diverse minds who are well interested in representing the department at Oratory Contest. We therefore charge those in charge to look into this and make an improved return.

There are expectations, and we will never stop expecting. We are not doing this to put the ‘Society’ under the influence of pressure but simply to put them on their toes and give them the urgency to smell the emergency of the situation. There’s a need to act. We want results!

Academic Tip: A Drop of Water Makes an Ocean

By: Iremide

What a beautiful metaphor! Relating this to one’s academic life. It emphasizes how individual contributions no matter how small can collectively create something vast and significant, much like how many drops of water come together to form an ocean.

Basically, academic success is built upon continuous learning, accumulation of knowledge and skills over time. Each lesson, lecture or piece of information learned is a “drop of water” that contributes to a person’s academic growth and development. Notably, this is a complete process that needs dedication and consistency in its accumulation.

The drop of water relating to academic life has to do with students attending classes, engaging in discussions regards their course of study, active in doing assignments, engage themselves in social activities relating to their fields, attend seminars, workshops to gain new knowledge in other to explore excellently within and outside the four wall of the classroom.

All these at the end of the day make or produce an intelligent and knowledgeable instinct for an individual to excel which is regarded as Ocean. Encouragement and support in academic institutions is very paramount in achieving academic excellence, the support and encouragement of peers, mentors and educators are crucial. Each person’s guidance and mentorship can be seen as a small drop that nurtures the academic growth of students and researchers.

Although, academic life can be demanding with many obstacles and challenges to overcome. The phrase encourages individuals to face these challenges head-on and start the journey in a bid to overcome the challenges. They are expected to view challenges as inevitable experiences that help shape their minds better for what is to come. Challenges are also means of attaining a new stage and becoming more stronger than before.

Also, the inclusion of research and publications cannot be overemphasized in the academic success of an individual. Academic research often involves incremental contributions to a field. Each paper or experiment adds to the collective body of knowledge. Overtime, these individual contributions create a deeper understanding of a subject, much like drops of water forming an ocean of knowledge.

It’s the idea that academic life is filled with opportunities for growth, discovery and progress and each new day is a chance to embark on a fresh academic journey.

SPECIAL: Dusk at Midday – Tributes to Ojo Favour

Fellow All, Àjò layé. As life is a dream, let us take solace in the inscription of the sayings that depicts the inevitable end of a beautiful journey. Let us rise to the occasion, embrace the good message, and ensure we keep it to heart.

Below are heartfelt lines description from friends and close friends which signifies a note of respect.

“Favour is such a sweet girl. Aside from being a departmental mate , she has been a good friend to me . The way she checks up and comes through for her friends is second to none. Favour is also a very hardworking lady as a conversation cannot pass without her talking about what she does and how you should patronize her . You will be greatly missed, Favour . I love you❤️. Till we meet to part no more.”

– Ayinde David (Davi Cruise)

NUESA Social Director 2021/2022 Session

“Ojo Favor played the role of a sister, mother and wife  to me. In the few days since she left, the world feels emptier without her laughter and kindness.

She was  more than a friend, I do call her my wife, there was never a dull moment with her, she was so particular about lifting others and making sure people around her received love and happiness. It doesn’t even matter to her if she spends her last cash on them. Even in the hospital nurses and her room mate in the sick bed loved her countenance ❤️ ️.

Her memory will forever live on in my hearts, a reminder of the joy you brought to us all. Rest in peace, dear friend❤️🕯🕊.”

– Agupusi Stanley Emeka

ASSESA Social Director 2022/2023 Session

“Ecclesiastes 3 vs 11 quoted from verse 2a “A time to be born, and a time to die; time to plant… Ojo Favor has ceased existing physically which is very painful as a human to lose one at that tender age, but you have fought a good fight for Charity, You came, You saw, and You conquered.

You aren’t just a level mate but a friend who turns out to be a family. A friend with a kind, loving, caring, philanthropist, accommodating, hospitable, and with a generous and humble heart. The way you chant my name “Timmy Timmy, Pastor Tim,” and how we play still makes it difficult to believe that you have gone.

The testimony of all your charity works in your community as a youth defines your position in God and teaches us that we don’t have to live in luxury or wait till we have more than enough before putting a smile on people’s faces- 1 Corinthians 13 vs 14. Then I see no reason to weep anymore because you left a legacy behind in God and you have transited  into eternal rest- 1 Thess 4 vs 13.

Lastly, your death is a great signal to us that we shouldn’t just gather to weep and mourn for you but to reflect deeply about the kind of lifestyle we are living. Are we obeying God’s commandment and do we love Him? We are a sojourner here on earth and death won’t knock before entering when one’s time is up. In all your ways acknowledge God- Ecclesiastes 9 vs 11-12, 12vs13-14, I John 2vs4, 4vs8.

Everything in this world will fade away but those that love God will stand forever- 1 John 2vs17. We shall meet to where we would see to part no more. I love you, ASSE loves you, the Faculty of Education loves you, and the University of Ibadan at large loves you. Rest on Ojo Favor. RIP”

“It was so painful accepting the harsh reality of your demise. I recall when we first met and all everyone around us could notice was the facial resemblance we shared. Ever since then, we’ve clicked as friends. You worked so hard and never relented. You were such a sweet girl, selfless and loved by many even till the end. Your words and laughter brought smiles to faces. It’s sad we will never see you again. Your memory will remain in our hearts and never be forgotten. I miss you already. Rest in peace, Favour.”

“Favour was a very good course mate to me and very kind. She was a loving person and likewise a warrior. The fact that I used to disturb people always made me play a lot with her. She will be like “leave me alone Habeeb, whala e po”but then I will still end up disturbing and dragging her up and down. We play along well. She was such a loving person during her lifetime. There are just many good things about her and her mind is so open to people. It’s so painful that she has to leave the world at this very short notice.”

“Dear Favour, I am still grappling with the devastating news of your premature departure from this world to the great beyond. It is only now that I truly grasp the transient nature of life. Favour, you weren’t just a committed student; you were also a diligent entrepreneur known for your unparalleled hospitality towards all and sundry.

It can’t be gainsaid truly that your memory will forever be etched in our hearts, and your absence will be deeply felt. This is even as I write to communicate my heartfelt condolences to your family, friends, fellow Assesaites, and all those affected during this challenging time, praying to the Almighty to grant everyone the fortitude to bear your irreplaceable loss. To you Favour, continue to rest in perfect peace. Goodnight.“

“Dearest Favour, As I sit here with tears in my eyes and a heavy heart, I find it difficult to put into words the depth of the loss I feel. You were not just a friend; you were a confidant and a partner in mischief. Who is going to join me now to tease some of our coursemates in class like we used to do? You really understood the assignment and you gave your best energy every time.

Your laughter was infectious, your smile, a beacon of light in the darkest of times. I can still remember in 100lv the dreams, secrets, and countless unforgettable moments we shared. I will forever cherish the memories we created together. Goodbye, my dear friend. May you find eternal peace and happiness in the realms beyond. With love and a heavy heart,”

Sincerely,I miss her generous personality and the entire department will also. At least, all the pain on her has faded away and she’s in a better place. May her gentle soul rest in peace.”

“In loving memory of Ojo Favour

A treasured coursemate, Friend, daughter, Sister, who left us too soon. I can still recall my last days with her ,  I said “Favour of old would run to class n sit on the floor when there wasn’t space anymore, now o ti di big girl,” I wasn’t aware of the silent pains and prayers. Notwithstanding, she still showed up.

I remember if she was sitting behind me she would tap me on the head and say “you this big headed troublesome boy you came to class today …”

Favour’s vibrant spirit, and unwavering dedication to our academic journey touched us all deeply despite such condition is an inspiration to us all. Speak of her spirit for business? Her kindness?
