UNBENDING CAMPUS JOURNALISTS AND THE ACTIVE STUDENT POLITICIANS; A LINE DRAWN BETWEEN THE PEN AND THE VOCALS

“Freedom of the press, if it means anything at all, means the freedom to criticize and oppose.”
– George Orwell

BACKGROUND
At the brick of the ladder sets the channels that round about the power house of a particular society where these houses perform their activities in a way laid according to morals and hand written laws of the land.

The ethics and principles of the society is then meant to be strictly comply to by all where any side shift from this sends a red signal of a foul play. The model is set in a form that these power houses serves as watch-dog on one another where there’s no masking of anyone’s sins. Since to err is human and to forgive is divine, wrong doings are meant to occur where in such case, corrections which are meant to set things right emanates.
Each time a sword of any style is being drawn from a power house to another, it is mostly being seen as a hate attack or an attempt to pull such down the gutter. It becomes more serious and intense when the supposed sinner is an individual loved by people who in turn wax on this conviction thereby using it as an instrument to fight against other power houses. Where there exists no arm that closely watches on another, the stance of accountability and conscious consciousness to act according to said obligations will run to an intentional or unintentional failure. This then further stress out the significance, need and presence of each power houses for a balanced ladder.

In a clear sense, there has always been this particular stage where the said unseen battle line is being drawn between the Pen and the Vocals. The line that connects these two is an unchanging one which is needed as one serves as a close watch on the other so as to ensure that the Vocals are putting into action their promised vocals. For a sane community, the stability and freedom of this said Pen is essential to ensure a development that such community deserves through her resources. Also, the Pen is mandatorily at the interest of the populace who ensure things meant for the people are not shared by some selected people. Therefore, the people are too strongly back the Pen.

THE CASE STUDIES
Let’s kick start this from here. During the Assesa Press Night of last session (2020/2021), aspirants of various positions were asked questions based on their self written manifesto on how the implementations would run. It was obvious to all present that some of these individuals either have no strong and back up plan or couldn’t defend their white and black defender. Of the press duty is to criticize and correct so as to ensure the whole is better represented by a figure who is a whole him/herself. Following this were the lashes and hate comments received by the Assesa press from some individuals who were supposedly friends, supporters, campaign group and lovers of these aspirants who couldn’t explain what they will exhibit if voted in. The unseen line was drawn here which strolled on and on till it went into extinction.

Recently, AFAS executives carried out a crucial financial event (Call off party) without a forward and approval process meant to be done by other arms. It was later decided by the higher authorities of the faculty to freeze the association’s account until further notice. The AFAS press team reported the happenings right from the period before the event up till aftermath of it all.

As a watch dog on this arm, measures were placed by the press to critique the acts performed, inform all Afasites as a whole and correct the executive arm the way they’re to be educated. The said arm raised horns and stressed that the faculty press were reporting things that weren’t even happening thereby tagging the press reports as false.

Few days ago, the mother press of all, UCJ UI (Union of Campus Journalist, UI) received some hate comments on the report against the Students’ Union’s PRO owing to the Union’s WhatsApp TV being managed in a questionable manner. Widely, it turned to a scene where lovers of the WhatsApp TV and supporters of the PRO turned against the Press for they all see the press as one who is determined to always target and run down the career of student politicians.

All seem to forget the fact that the duty of the press is what was carried out by exposing negative suspecting activities to all which will send a message to others that the press is always watching and ever ready to perform its duties.

INFLUENCE OF THE PRESS
As the voice of the society, the press serves as a link between other power houses and the society.

To this extent is how the press body is meant to place a close watch on these individuals, make to return to their normal position if such must’ve drifted off the line through their operations and activities and also inform the populace of pressing and current occurrences. The press is a distinctive body who has always separated itself from being used as a means to a means by other arms of authority. Through the press activities, men of the Vocals are always on their heels to do what right as they are of the press conscious watch on their day to day activities.

To the influence of the Campus Journalists, it was seen that the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) took up the issue of the Students’ Union PRO after the report went all viral resulting to a temporary bank of the Unions’ WhatsApp T.v. This is to show how strong the active the press is in correcting flaws and suggesting solutions to issues of the society. On the other hand, to further stress that the press is all in a mission to shape the populace for betterment, some individuals who emerge to become a member of the executive are still on the run to find a balance and define their office implementations which were questioned back then.

MESSAGE TO ALL
As supposedly said by some that the press is bent in intentionally criticizing and only focusing on the weaknesses of student leaders is of a misconception that needs to be halted. Some were even of the point that members of the press are envious and full of jealousy taste towards these student leaders.

Another faction would say the press purposely attacks the Vocals for the purpose of gaining public recognition and popularity with such critique. The interesting part of this which sounds ironical is the fact that some populace who are meant to stand firm behind press acts that are at the full interest of the populace betterment. It can be surprising and disappointing seeing people support the hand preparing to fire bullets across their mind.

Through all hates and negative comments said against the press, the Pen is still unbending as the ink that flows through its veins is an infinite one which can never be weary. As long as there are minds who still see and believe in the integrity, stands, written voices and proclamations of the press, it will never let the negative influences subdue it to give up and bow to the set to fall command and deeds of the ones at the other end.

The press activities is all centered towards the interests of the people and in such project a free voice to expose and educate ones of questionable Vocals. Press Freedom shall always prevail.

ASSESA FINALISTS SET TO GET PROJECT SUPERVISORS NEXT WEEK

By: Temitayo OJEDIRAN

The finalists of the Department of Arts and Social Sciences Education, Faculty of Education are set to get their project supervisors next week according to the departmental Head of Department, Professor. Fakeye in an interview session with ASSESApress on Friday, 18th November, 2022.

According to the HOD, arrangements have been going on in the department to assign supervisors to the final year students so that they can begin their final year projects in earnest. The departmental courses are in 3 units – Language education, art education, social sciences education – and the supervisors list has to be released once.

The final year Students of the department has been asking questions and getting unsettled about their final year project since the beginning of the session.

While their counterparts in other departments have started their final year projects and have made meaningful progress, the department had not released a list of supervisor or made any comments about it.

Also, talking about the unfair and sometimes ill treatment of education students in the faculties of Arts, and Social Sciences where they borrow from, the HOD opined that the attitudes are age long attitudes that education students have to cope with. Education students being high achievers in the departments where they borrow from would raise eyebrows.

However, they should not mind the attitude (or unfair treatment) faced but rather give due attention to their studies. In the end of it all, the end justifies the means because they(education students) would go ahead to become trail blazers.

On issue of clashing classes, he said the perfect solution would have been for the school management to adopt a central timetable construction system but this has not been accepted by the school during management meetings.

Albeit, the platform of NUESA through the Dean of the faculty might proffer a solution to the issue if the issue is being raised at the committee of Deans and Provosts, without backing down so that education students won’t be loosing at both ends when their classes clash.

At the departmental level however, little or nothing could really be done.

INTERVIEW SESSION WITH ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES EDUCATION HOD

Assesa Press met with the department’s Head Of Department, Professor Fakeye where issues that concern Assesaites were spread to light for clear and better clarification. Below is the full conversation.

ASSESA PRESS

Congratulations on becoming the HOD. Before the strike we had a different HOD, after strike we have a new one. What is the duration for serving as the Head of Department?

H.O.D

Thank You. I welcome you all to this interactive session, the regulation guiding the appointment of head of department is that if you are not a professor, you will be accorded as an acting Head of Department for a maximum of two years, if you are a professor, you are allowed to be a full HOD and not acting, you are eligible to spend the first two years and the VC can renew your tenure for another two years which makes it 4 years. This year July, the tenure of the immediate HOD elapse and everyone was expecting that the VC will renew another two years to make it 4 years but he (immediate HOD) said he was no longer interested. Like I too, after serving two years I won’t be interested because it is an office that is so demanding. The office is so demanding, this morning Some of your students (direct entry), having teaching subjects in CLA said a particular lecturer sent them out that they should go and delete the course because he won’t accommodate them, so I have to go and address that issue first, I had to leave the meeting I have because that’s more important than the meeting I wanted to attend. So I came back to the meeting, spent about 25 minutes before going to see someone else. It’s a demanding thing as a HOD which is why you only see a Professor spending two years because he is not interested in a second term but he is eligible to spend 4 years at maximum.

ASSESA PRESS

Thank you very much Sir.

Freshers are complaining of class clashing which is actually not new to 200 – 400 Assesaites. The question is how can this be limited in a way that students won’t be losing at both ends?

H.O.D

The issue is a system problem. As long as University of Ibadan is practicing the act of time table being done by faculties there is no way there won’t be clashing of courses. I did my first degree in Ife (Obafemi Awolowo University), Ife is a great model on how time table should be drawn, time table is handled centrally in Ife and all timetable is in the office of the director of academic planning. It is his duty to run time table for all courses in the university and make sure no course clashes with another, especially education courses not clashing with sciences, arts and social sciences. We told the VC and he said with time UI will get there (I don’t know when).

What we can do is that, through the instrumentality of NUESA, you can make submission through NUESA which will then be forwarded to the Dean who will take it up to the committee of Deans and Provosts where they can make possible resolutions. Like I received a report of STE 353 clashing with Cla 301 where the former course lecturer said there might be test after each class and the latter course lecturer will not allow them to come in once they are late. So, I think when the matter is taken up by the Dean and being considered at the Meeting of committee of Deans and Provosts, MAYBE there can be solution.

Also, it’s reported of the kind of treatment they give to our students. They (other faculties) are always envious of us, even in Ife where there was no course clashing, we do score highest in the same course we offer with them and we are in Education, maybe because of the Jamb cut off which is sometimes low for education courses, although in some cases courses like Education and English usually have a higher cut off mark than pure English.

By the time we prove to them that we are the Lord of the class, they will know. All the three first class produced in English (including me) during my time in Ife were all from Education. It’s also good that our students prove themselves to them so that they don’t think because we are Education Students that we are inferior. Another thing is that they know you have two chances as you can work in anywhere an average B.A (for Arts) or B.Sc (for Social Sciences) work and at same time, you can also teach. In their own case, before they can be admitted into the teaching profession, they have to do PGDE. You are the only one that can change the narratives by performing well.

ASSESA PRESS

There are issues regarding the missing of courses on the transcript. 400lv students have not being seeing Gce101 and some other courses on their transcript and people have written and lodge complains regards how it is going to be resolved. How can this be settled Sir?

H.O.D

The problem lies with the introduction of RMS (Result Management System), a lot of courses have been uploaded that we don’t see but I have noted that down and I will send message to the course lecturer to re-upload from 2017/2018 session so that it can cover all current students.

ASSESA PRESS

Will the 400 level students receive a message once it has been uploaded?

H.O.D

Their transcripts will be uploaded and updated. Now that you’ve told me, I will tell Dr. Babalola, who is in charge of our online result to go and check for updated Gce101 results from the 2017/2018 academic session till date. I have also ordered the department secretary to update all transcripts including the ones that was uploaded during the holiday and she has embarked on that since yesterday.

ASSESA PRESS

The next one is of the finalists who has not been assigned Project Supervisors . What is the current situation Sir?

H.O.D

We are in a department of three units; Language, Art and Social Sciences. The allocation for language has already been done but I tarried a bit because the department is recruiting two new staffs which we have concluded the process since last week Friday. So when they resume next week, because I have already put their names on the allocation, they will supervise some students and the list have not been released because they are yet to officially resume. But by the time they are on ground hopefully by Monday or Tuesday. Meanwhile I will inform those in charge of Social Sciences to submit on Monday so that by Monday we can process it. A copy of the list will be dropped at the Assesa secretariat.

ASSESA PRESS

There is an observation that those in CLA option are usually introduced to English courses in their 300l(Eng 301 and Eng303). The observation is that these two courses are advance courses and students of CLA option don’t have the basic knowledge or foundation.

H.O.D

Why we did it was to enhance the marketability of students. When we were having the review of curriculum, we deliberately put two English courses (Syntax and Phonology) so that in their transcript at the end of the day, they might want to take a program which require having English courses in their transcript. What I will rather do (although I don’t need to tell you) is that I will make those courses required rather than compulsory in sense that even if a student fails it, it won’t have to be retaken again or affect their graduation. And this change can only happen when we make a review because I’m planning to do a curriculum review. There is even a course in which they made mistake, Cef403, which was written as a compulsory course rather than required. It is a required course and not compulsory, same applicable to STE353. Before I came in, some students were unable to graduate because of failing one or both of these courses. But don’t worry, the review will be in the interest of the students. The goal is to make the students more resourceful in the job seeking market. We are even planning to include some Literature courses for CLA option students. I think what will be done in the nearest future is removing one out of Phonology or Syntax and replace it with a literature course.

ASSESA PRESS

The departmental brochure which is meant to guide us is now misleading us in some cases. There are some courses in the brochure which are not available any morel. How can this be reshaped Sir?

H.O.D

Our problem is in the Faculty of Arts, the rate at which they change courses is very high. What we need to do is that I will instruct that they should go to every department of our options in Art and get their current list of courses so that it can be aligned with what we have, I will set a committee that will review these courses so that they can help us upgrade our brochure.

ASSESA PRESS

There are some students in which the course they were admitted by Jamb is different from what the university gave them. Any way out of this Sir ?

H.O.D

Let me see one of them to know what happened and what they are doing about it because we have to know. They should bring their admission letter and the course they got registered for. So that if we need to write a letter to the admission office that they should desist from that because at the point of graduation when such go for NYSC, NYSC will always look at their admission letter and see what they have done in school which such differences can then create problem.

ASSESA PRESS

We are done. We just want to thank you very much for this opportunity and its observed from looking at the pictures of past HOD of the department that Prof. Ajiboye didn’t spend up to 2 years as the Head of the department.

H.O.D

Yes, Prof. Ajiboye came in 2015 and left in 2016 because he had a federal appointment as a member of the TRCN board. If I also have an appointment now, I will leave this place once and for all. If I get an appointment to be a chairman of a whole commission in Abuja, I will leave here.

ASSESA PRESS

Thank you very much sir

H.O.D

You are welcome

By FPO

On 28th of August 2020, the sad news of Chadwick Boseman’s untimely death broke out. His death from colon cancer came as a surprise to all, especially fans of Black Panther. Even though Chadwick Boseman is dead, his legacy continues.

ASUU STRIKE; A BLESSING IN DISGUISE OR JUST A WASTE OF TIME

By: FPO

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) started an industrial strike on the 14th of February, 2022 due to failure of the government to heed to their demands, it lasted till the 13th of October, 2022 lasting about 8 months. It must be noted that there have been 16 strikes in the past 23 years. So during these strikes what happens to students?
Knowing fully well that an idle hand is the devil’s workshop, some students decided to find the blessing in this reoccurring disappointment by keeping themselves busy with learning digital skills and learning hand work. Some got temporary jobs while some spent the 8 months strike enjoying the comforts of their father’s house.
The recurring strike had both negative and positive impacts. We gathered the opinion of some students to know if the last ASUU strike was just a waste of their time or a blessing in disguise for them.

Omolayo Ayomide; “For me, it’s both coz I was able to do certain things that are best kept to myself when I went home buh it’s also a waste of time too coz I could have been through with my studies this year as a final year student, moving on to the next phase of my life but that isn’t possible anymore now coz of the long strike. So it’s both for me”

Awah Enobong: “At first for me, it was a waste of time, then later became a blessing in disguise for me”
Adekola Hallelujah: “You can choose make use of both and be product. You can be productive in both. So I’ll say yes and no”

Olamide Marvellous: “Humanly ASUU strike was a waste of time but I know God knows best”
Olasunmbo Morenikeji: Its a blessing in disguise for me because I earned a lot of money than I expected”
Dele Alonge: “It was a blessing on disguise because it opened my eyes to life after school and it made me improve on some qualities that made me self dependent and made me set priorities right”

Oluwafunmilayo Esther: “It’s a waste of time because the time we are meant to be in school we are at home doing nothing. So we are already meant to be a graduate by now but due to the strike ko work out. Basically it’s a waste of time because students involved can’t move forward they are just hooked in one place. It’s also a blessing because during the strike some people where able to achieve something in which if they were in school they wouldn’t have achieved that somewhere able to discover their talent, some went to learn work and some venture into tech stuff . So to me ASUU strike na both waste of time and blessing in disguise”

EFFECTIVE WAYS OF MAINTAINING GOOD ACADEMIC GRADES

By: Seliat Olajide

Education is the process of impacting one with knowledge, skills, value and virtue of the society, this is a powerful weapon which can be used to promote changes in the society. Hence, the need of education as they become matured in enhancing efficiency and effectiveness in learning. Below are those ways by which students can maintain good grades in the academic session:
Do not skip classes: If getting grade is of one’s priority then one has to pin point the fact that classes should not be missed. In classes, different vital information are passed to students and this expose students to how they should study and get access to necessary correlating discipline materials recommended by the lecturer. Constant class attendance brings one close to the lecturer personality which gives one idea on how to approach task given including assignments. Skipping classes can cause missing impromptu test which contribute to ones continuous assessment. The idea of skipping classes should be far away from those who want to have a great grade during their academics session.
Take note during a class: Being in a class should not only be about listening to the lecturer but also having their words penned, this will then serve as a reminder of the class activities. The act of taking note helps with associating oneself with something to read during exams or test, it serves as a reminder of lost points, it also serves as instrument of adding more information to an available ones. Keeping note is a good sign of preparation towards getting a good grade as such cant be gained by attending the class alone but also having a note in such class
Do your assignments: Students portray negligence acts towards their assignment which is very important in testing their knowledge on a particular subject matter. In the process of neglecting assignment, one would not be able to challenge their intellectual state of the subject which will give them knowledge on their stand in their performance. Assignments could be recorded as parts of one’s continuous assessment at the end of the semester, whoever desires a good grade should ensure all assignments given is well done and submitted
Study with fellow friends: The idea of group reading brings group of intellect together who are gathere

Ask for help: Academic challenges are uncommon but putting a solution to it is a consistent reasoning, during ones academic session one can meet with some challenging discipline which calls for help, one shouldn’t hesitate to seek for help in ones area of weakness, this will help in better understanding of such discipline and meeting up with good grades.

Get prepared: Exams and tests should not be the reasons for preparing through reading, preparation ahead of exam is a key to have easy retaining of the discipline. This requires drafting a good time table for reading, staying organized and has a watch of time. These are necessary tips to excel in ones academics year, buying to the act of reading daily strengthen ones brain level and enhance easy recalculation as the law of exercise has taken place.

MEET OUR MENTOR OF THE WEEK

By: Ojediran Temitayo (Herald)
MENTOR OF THE WEEK: IKONWI GODDOING ( Egalitarian Movement UI)

Can we meet you?

I’m Ikonwi Goddoing Bariedoora, popularly and politically known as Comrade Goddybest.A 300L student of the department of adult education/political science .I’m the current academic and Welfare director of faculty of Education, University of Ibadan. Also, I’m the secretary of University of Ibadan academic committee. An honorable member of the University of Ibadan Students, Representative Council (UISRC).And finally, the convener and founder of The Egalitarian Movement, UI.

What’s Egalitarian movement all about?

TEAM GODDYBEST is an EGALITARIAN MOVEMENT that is, we support and believe on the principle of equality. Secondly, we render HUMANITARIAN SERVICES. Rendering help and reaching out to people in all faculties in UI and even extended. We also reach out to street children and visit orphanage homes. We are also very interested in building student’s entrepreneurs and those who don’t even have a skill, to acquire one through our free skill acquisition programs we do organize every session. After the training, we also sponsor the trainees to go and learn more about the skill.

How were you able to come up with this initiative and how have you been coping with it?

Well, it has been God all the way, sir.
We started this movement right from my 100L days. Precisely, it was officially founded on the 30th of October 2019.Because when I gained admission into Ui, I came with different goals and target, I really wanted to impact my environment and people around me. And I guess I’m trying my little best today in all aspects.

What keeps you going?

Determination to impact lives and to render humanitarian services to the society and people around me. Also, I really want to render quality leadership in all positions I’m holding or contesting for in the nearest future. Then lastly, my sister, she is my inspiration.

What about your sister?

My sister is my little wife for now. I love her so much, and I share almost everything with her. She is the last baby of the house. My mom and dad left her at a very tender age (age 5) so since then, I took over every burden of my family as the first born. My sister have really been supportive in everything. I’m always proud of her because she doesn’t take any effort for granted.
How have you been able to source for funds to keep Egalitarian movement active and relevant?
It has really not been easy, but we thank God for always using people to sponsor most of our programs. In the Egalitarian Movement, we have our members, executive members and stakeholder forum members, staff advisers, mentor and patron. All these people come together to sponsor most of our activities.
Again, I have most of my political mentors and admirers who believe so much in me, so they sponsor most of our activities too. Personally, I also use my resources for most of our activities.

You made mention of you starting Egalitarian Movement since 100l, how did you cope as a fresher, combining academics with Humanitarian service and even up till now?

Omo, e no easy, but I thank God for everything today. Like I said earlier, I’m not in Ui for just for studies alone, I came with different goals and targets and I’m still pursuing them till date. I was so determined to make a better change in this citadel of learning and beyond. In doing all these, I still have that consciousness that the primary reason why I’m here is to study, I never neglected my primary purpose of being here. When it is time to read, I’m surely going to read. I’m always trying as much as possible to balance up my academic with my leadership positions without prejudice to one or the other, most especially in my building construction work and painting. Because I’m also the CEO of GODDYBEST BUILDING CONSTRUCTION AND ASSOCIATES (A Building Construction Firm).

Are Uites open to joining your organization?

Yes, any Uite can join this humanitarian organization. We have our members in all faculties in Ui and beyond. In fact, our recruitment form for the 2022 academic session is ongoing and it is going to close on the 14th of November, 2022. Anyone can join so far he/she is willing and ready to give back to the society and impact lives in his/her own little way. Our membership form is just #500 only. We believe on the principle of “Togetherness” To obtain the form: 09032103658 (Opemipo)

What advice will you give to Freshers who might be interested in joining but don’t know how to balance both academics and Humanitarian work?

First of all, they should sit down well and talk to themselves personally. Look, it’s not about joining different organizations oo, it’s about balancing everything together. Ask yourself few questions. Can I be able to balance up my academic with this? Can I cope? Can I make impact through this? Because it’s very important to know what you are going for. As at today, I, Comr. Goddybest can’t join any organization without making any impact. If they are able to answer those questions above well and their answers are yes, then they are good to go, and if the answers are no, then they should still sit well and work on themselves.

Give us your parting shot.

I just want to encourage all students to keep striving and never to be discouraged no matter what. Look, “Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.”For me, “It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.”Let’s us all learn how to believe in ourselves and contribute our quotas to the society no matter how little. God bless University of Ibadan !!! God bless all Uites !!!

FIVE MOST COMMON CANCER CASES IN NIGERIA

By: Blessing I. Opeyemi

According to the National Cancer Institute, Cancer is a disease in which some of the bodys cells grow uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body.Cancer can start almost anywhere in the human body, which is made up of trillions of cells. Normally, human cells grow and multiply (through a process called cell division) to form new cells as the body needs them. When cells grow old or become damaged, they die, and new cells take their place. Sometimes this orderly process breaks down, and abnormal or damaged cells grow and multiply when they shouldnt.

These cells may form tumours, which are lumps of tissue. Tumours can be cancerous or not cancerous (benign). Also, according to the NCI, there are more than 100 types of cancer. And they are usually named for the organs or tissues where the cancers form.In Nigeria, cancer is one of the poorly addressed cases of morbidity and mortality in Nigeria which affect both sexes irrespective of age. The country has one of the highest cancer mortality rates in the world, with approximately four out of five cases resulting in death, according to the Global Cancer Observatory. In countries in Sub Saharan Africa, where religious and traditional beliefs/superstitions are on the high, cancer patients with undiagnosed cancer cases often think cancers are spiritual attacks and therefore visit traditional healers, or religious centres in search of solution and when the cancer are already advanced, they resort to medical treatment; with no access to adequate and/or advanced and affordable treatment, it leads to an inevitable death.

The five most common cancer in Nigeria according to the international agency for research on cancer (IARC) and World Health Organisation (WHO) data on cancer in 2020 is breast cancer, prostrate, cervix, colorectal, non-Hodgkin lymphoma cancer respectively.According to the study done by Global Cancer Observatory (GLOBOCAN) in Nigeria in 2020 published in 2021, there were 233,911 cancer cases with 124, 815 new cases and 78,899 deaths which is about 34% mortality rate of the known and registered cases.

The issue of late diagnosis and inadequate access to good treatment leads to the higher mortality rate in developing countries like Nigeria.Breast cancer is the most common cancer in (the world and) Nigeria and it mostly affects women. It is the leading cause of cancer deaths currently, representing about 23% of all cancer cases and approximately 18% percent of deaths are attributed to it in the country (IARC/WHO 2020). Major modifiable risk factors linked to breast cancer are alcohol consumption, smoking, lack of physical activities, overweight and obesity. Other factors that are not under the patients control which makes her prone to breast cancer are genetic factors, family history of breast cancer, age(older women have been recorded to have more cases of breast cancer than younger women), gender ( although breast cancer affect men too, a larger percentage are women).Prostrate cancer is the leading cancer case in men. It reportedly accounts for 12% of all cancer cases with 11% of death in registered cases in Nigeria. The American Cancer Society defined the prostate as a gland found only in males that makes some of the fluid that is part of semen. The prostate is found below the bladder and in front of the rectum, it is about the size of a walnut and can be much larger in older men. Prostate cancer begins when cells in the prostate gland start to grow out of control. Early prostate cancer usually causes no symptoms. More advanced prostate cancer can sometimes cause problems during urination, blood in the urine or semen, trouble getting an erection, pain in the hips, back(spine), chest(ribs), weakness or numbness in the legs or feet or even loss of bladder or bowel control from cancer pressing on the spinal cord. Cervix cancer is the second most common cancer among women in Nigeria aged 15 to 44 years in Nigeria but it is also one of the most preventable.According to the HPV Centre, about 70% of all known cases of cervical cancer are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV) serotypes 16 and 18, which are most commonly transmitted through sex. HPV can also be transmitted through the use of contaminated hospital equipment and from mother to child during pregnancy.

A 2021 report from the HPV Centre estimates that every year more than 12,000 Nigerian women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and almost 8,000 of them die from the disease. The main cause of cervical cancer, according to the World Health Organisations (WHO) Africa office, is persistent or chronic infection with one or more of the high-risk types of human papillomavirus.

The WHO also says HPV is the most common sexually acquired infection and often impacts young adults who become sexually active early on in their lives. The colorectal cancer is the cancer of the colon, bowel and rectum. These are parts of the digestive system that begins at the mouth and ends at the anus. Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer type globally with around 1.80 million cases and it caused 862,000 deaths at the end of 2018, the second-highest of all cancer deaths. While previously thought to be uncommon in Africa and Nigeria, colorectal cancer cases have been steadily rising in the past few years. There are some conditions (called risk factors) that can increase the odds of developing colorectal cancer which include age, alcohol consumption, smoking, race(black and African Americans have been reported to be at high risk of developing the cancer). On the other side of the coin, eating a balanced diet with less meat and more fibre, quitting smoking, exercising often, maintaining a healthy weight, and getting screened for colorectal cancer for adults could be preventive measures. The non-Hodgkin is the third most common cancer affecting Nigerian women. Non-Hodgkins lymphoma is a type of cancer that begins in your lymphatic system, which is part of the bodys germ-fighting immune system. In non-Hodgkins lymphoma, white blood cells called lymphocytes grow abnormally and can form growths (tumours) throughout the body. In most instances, doctors dont know what causes non-Hodgkins lymphoma. It begins when your body produces too many abnormal lymphocytes, which are a type of white blood cell.Normally, lymphocytes go through a predictable life cycle. Old lymphocytes die, and your body creates new ones to replace them. In non-Hodgkins lymphoma, your lymphocytes dont die, and your body keeps creating new ones. This oversupply of lymphocytes crowds into your lymph nodes, causing them to swell.Although there is a prevalent rise in the cases of cancer in the country, the disease itself is only one part of the story.

Health care in Nigeria has become of the most underfunded and least robust systems in the world. On one hand, there is a shortage of personnel with an ongoing brain drain in the health sector. Nigeria averaged fewer than 1 doctor per 1,000 people and had fewer than 90 oncologists (doctors trained specifically in cancer treatment) as of 2021. On the other hand, there is also the issue of underfunding. Since 2001, successive Nigerian governments have consistently allocated less than 10% of the national budget to health care, despite a 2001 declaration by African heads of state known as the Abuja Declaration to allocate at least 15% of their national budgets to health care. All of this means that millions of Nigerians do not have access to quality health and are at greater risk of death if they develop any of these common cancers if adequate care is not quickly taken.

COPING WITH CLASHING OF CLASSES

By: Josephine Awomodu

Since school resumed, lectures have begun aggressively and tests are drawing closer. Leaving your house or hostel as early as 7a.m or 6a.m to attend classes and returning at so late can be really hectic and tiring. As a student, you also want to have your personal study time to catch up on all your lecturers have taught you. But, where’s the time? Where’s the strength?

How do students deal with their classes that clash?

Having 3 to 4 clashes in a week is a bit huge and dealing with each is not totally feasible. A student whose class runs from 7 in the morning to 7 in the evening, but has two clashes within that period, how does the student catch up on the latest updates on the course? Reach out to their friends? Well, reaching out to a friend in another department is easy, but where’s the time to do the catch-up?

Being up and running for about 8 to 10 hours makes you return to your home tired and exhausted. First, you’d want to munch on something to refill your energy, and then sleep sets in. It’s natural that the human body feels sleepy after eating foods that contain carbohydrates and proteins.

A student could fall asleep at 9 p.m and wake the next day, preparing to spend another 8 to 10 hours outside the house. And before you say “jack”, notes are piling, courses are left untouched, time flies, and tests draw closer.
How are students expected to maintain a balance when their classes clash? How should they balance their attendance for every class that clashes? How should students understand their lectures when they have to forfeit one course for another? Well, it’s you, the student, who has to fix yourself.
A well drafted timetable for all your activities (academics and non-academics) will help greatly. Every schedule that reoccurs should be drafted into a timetable. Have your sleep time, study time, cooking time, eating time, and others. With a well drafted and respected timetable, you should be able to cover up classes you missed due to clashes. Don’t forget to have a trusted friend whose notes you can rely on for every lecture missed.

HALF COMMITMENT FOR HALF SALARY; THE TALE OF A DYING EDUCATION SYSTEM

By: The scribe

At first, right along the horizon of a strike that seems not to end too soon was the mental and emotional struggle to get things right and back on track. Though, the timing of this drama seem like a wasted effort to tag as being significant, that it ended someway somehow 4 weeks ago put a comma to the issue. It was a comma that sends signs of the aftermath to come as the issues that spurred the strike were left on a thin line which can be cut off easily through the way it was begging for answers.

The expected answers came two weeks ago when it was learnt that members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) were paid half salaries for the October pay.
One would think the employers of ASUU are maybe trying to check to how the lecturers will cry out on this or if they wont care. Scenes were seen of the reactions that spurred out as branches of ASUU went on a heated deliberation with rumors of their possibility to consider a 3 weeks warning strike. Some branches were even said to have ordered their members to stay off work until their pay is fully remitted. It was then pegged and shifted further by the intervention of the House of Assembly Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, who has been a major instrument in pouring sweet aura to the wounds of the university lecturers.
Can a man not paid in full of his duties carry such out with a potential strength? I doubt that. Even a ministerial man whose belly is filled with emptiness of strength will not perform well when he’s called upon. Also, the emotion break off caused on lecturers that tend to have been affected off by this action to pay them on half is said to further boil down to experiencing shift over in their commitment towards teaching. Another strand where the lecturers might have experience a loss of aura is the thought of the mistreat they have suffered in the hands of the present administration.
As much as we mention the drop in the energies powered towards teaching and learning, emphasis will be placed on the constant drop in the quality of education the country have been experiencing in past years.

Although, lecturers might want to set aside the fact that they are being mistreated and therefore swim in the waters of the passion they have for their work and gain strengths from such, but to how long can they bathe in such polluted water? How can one explain the feeling of being out of pain for 8 months and then getting the first pay to be of half salary? Surely, half salary shall amount to half commitment.
If we are to measure the potential drop of universities lecturers since they were paid on half, then one would have seen how this has affected their normal flow of the educational process.

The commitment level amidst the thought that I am working base on half salary is of low range as lecturers come to lecture room with the mindset of not draining much of their energies. To an adage that says to whom much is given, much is expected, then, can it be wrong if the lecturers feel to whom less is given, less is expected?

Shall we then watch and fold hands to the gradual declining of education value across the country? As a lot clinches on the wings of education to further show them light for a better future, wouldnt one say they all have their hopes hanging as the future of education gangs on in a feeble state? A very sad situation to consider of the present plight that has befall the education system. What becomes of the generations to come if the present state is nothing to write about? What it tends to become later on is one that seems like moving from fry pan to fire. Rather being on a forward lane, the state of things as of education is on a backward lane, so ironically to say.

Awaiting the next stage of dramas come next month which might spur out should the Federal Government fail to pay part of the 8 months salary arrears as promised. Public universities in the nation cant endure going for another strike as the just concluded one will take about 2-3 years for them to overcome and get back to normal. Issues like strike, lack of learning infrastructure, salary debts and the likes only throw the quality and future of education into deep pit which might be hard or impossible to replenish. Will education still remain the key to a shining light come the next 4-5 years? Lets provide the answer in our minds.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Confirms the Acceptance of University of Ibadan Students at the NYSC Orientation Camp.

By: Adeniran Oluwafemi

Prospective Corp Members from the University of Ibadan are now being accepted in their respective orientation camp, after a delayed of registration that happened to Prospective Corp members from University of Ibadan (UI) and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) among others.

However, the Principal Assistant Registrar, of Public Communication, UI, Mrs. Joke Akinpelu, while being interviewed by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), clearly stated that UI is already doing what the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) requires of it and the prospective corps members from the institution are now being accepted in camp.In addition, the management of the University of Ibadan (UI) also declared that actions to settle the challenges encountered by the graduates of the institution in NYSC registration at orientation camps have been duly taken.

Prospective Corps Members (PCMs) of the University of Ibadan (UI) and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) among others, were not officially registered in camps because their institutions; failed to comply with the NYSC format prescribed for their list to be sent to it. It was earlier reported that the Director of Corps Mobilization, Isa Walida Siddique signed a circular, with the title “Prospective Corps Members With Incomplete Data For Camp Registration”, wherein it was stated that all institutions had been suitably informed of the requirements that NYSC accepts. The circular was dated 7th November 2022.The circular also has it that the mobilization status of Prospective Corp Members can be altered when their respective data is not rightly conformed in the portal and hard copies; the reason why NYSC won’t jeopardize their decision with any institutions.

The Director, in the circular, therefore, requested that all Prospective Corp Members should be kindly advised to go back to their respective institutions so that the challenges they are faced with may be rectified.Reports have it that Prospective Corp Members who earlier reported to camp for the Batch C orientation program spoke of some unpalatable experiences they had; owing to the failure of institutions (CPIs) to submit to the requirements of NYSC on her mode of registration. It was reported to have become so much of a problem for Prospective Corps Members whose institutions are yet to comply, they tend to be in the minority as only a few of the institutions are yet to subscribe to NYSC’s decision. Hence, not much consideration for their PCMs.

WHO IS TO BLAME?

Since the Adetoun led administration has been handed over to by the Vitality`s team, there has been no point able achievement.

The Vitality team ably led by Rebecca Amoko handed over to the new executives elected on Friday, 21st January, 2022. Has anything been achieved?

Of course we are aware that the Academic Staff Union of Universities embarked on a strike precisely on the 14th February,2022 which made the new executives to spend barely a Month in Office before Academic activities was paused.

Academic activities resumed in some 3 4 weeks ago, what has then been done by these executives? They have done a lot, probably in their head or on paper because how will a project be done when there is no access to fund. Is it that Assesaites do not pay their dues? Assesaites are responsible students and have started paying their dues, why then is there so much delay in actualizing the set goals?

Our executives do not have access to the association`s account, because the signatory has not been changed, now students pay into account which the executives has no access to, funds can not be released and as such delayed the basic activities that are supposed to take place at the beginning of the session, little wonder our dear department is having her fresher`s orientation at the end of fourth week of resumption, where so many freshers already have a pattern of life, they already started learning how to cope with the supposed “Shege” that they are facing on campus. Is an orientation not meant to guide the path of a new inductee, student or employer? Dear freshers, do not be annoyed that your orientation is coming a bit late, our executives are just looking for ways by which they can raise funds perhaps maybe they will ask each member of the executive arm to pay certain amount just to organize a shaky welcome programme for you. Is it that those who are former signatories to the association`s account travelled out of the country or what? Or ASUU strike also affected Banks? In the last ten months, both parties (Past President& Treasurer and the current President & Treasurer) could not avail themselves so as to change the signatory of the account. Who then is to be blame?

Who then is to be blamed for a shaky parliament that we have, the introduction of the Senate to replace the existing Departmental Consultative Council has made a lot to be delayed , the new constitution which was designed by the vitality team has put us into trouble as the association can not run effectively since the senate has not been constituted and the DCC has not been properly dissolved. The vitality team left the office with so many things hanging, now the new administration are moving back and forth on how to effectively run in office. Who then is to be blamed?

Our leaders are inexperienced and have not garnered the necessary experiences they need in order to run in office properly, is it by studying Political Science that can make one a good leader or by speaking so much vocabularies or by having good outlook which amounts to nothing if rational decisions which will affect ASSESAITES positively cannot be taken.

What about the personal ego that our leaders have put on? How do we explain that our leaders have personal beef which has made it difficult for them to have one voice or to work in a unified way, A House divided against itself will never stand. Our leaders are controlled by forces, whether seen or unseen, I mean some Jagabans which are seen as the Lords of the department or the loyalists who worked very hard to ensure the emergence of our leaders in the various offices they are serving. Who then is to be blamed? Posterity will never forget all our leaders on how they have contributed to the advancement or the impediment of our great Association.

ENERGETIC FRESHMEN OVERPOWER SENIORS IN ASSESA UI NOVELTY MATCH

By: Emperor

A brilliant evening as Art and Social Sciences Education, University of Ibadan freshmen defeated the senior team and defending champion of the Nuesa Dean’s Cup.

A dramatic and entertaining match saw the newly admitted students go home with all the points against the Departmental team on Thursday evening with a lot of controversial decisions taken by the referee.

The Staylite open the scoresheet with a brilliant assist from Dotun which was utilized by Ayanfe with a fine header but the young footballers of the department were relentless and ensured they carry all possible points. The match ended 3 – 4 in favour of the Freshers.

Here are four things we observed from the match

(3) The Freshmen are Energetic and ready to fight for their place in the departmental football team: The newly admitted students show they are ready to fight for a place in the Departmental team with a brilliant display this evening. As we know that a place in the team is by merit not status, everyone will be given a chance.

(2) The goalkeeper committed series of error leading to goal: A lot of error leading to Goal was made by the goalkeeper in today’s match. Seems the goalkeeper lost his confidence and looks not motivated. He performed brilliantly during the 200L survival cup organized by the current student union sport director in 200 Level and earned a silver medal after losing the final on penalty shootout to physiology. Seems He lack match fitness but there is still room for improvement.

(1) Bad Officiating and poor decision: It was a dramatic and controversial match between the two sides. We can’t fault the referee because he officiated the match without assistants (Linesmen and fourth official). As we know the referee can’t be everywhere on the pitch, two goals were offside and it stood despite protest by the players and coach. The referee was left without a choice

4. Fatigue and lack of match fitness
The Staylite lack match fitness and it really shows in today’s match. Asuu 8 months Strike is a factor with everyone finding means to survive through the strike, And ever since the suspension of the strike there haven’t been a training organize by the department.

MEET OUR MENTOR OF THE WEEK

By: Ojediran Temitayo (Herald)

MENTOR OF THE WEEK: SAMUEL BOLUWATIFE (TEEFEH`S BITE)

Can we meet you?

My name is Boluwatife Samuel, a student of the prestigious University of Ibadan, from the department of Health Education, Faculty of Education, 300level. I am an entrepreneur, I bake all types of cakes and pastries

You bake cake while away from school or what?

I bake cake while in school.

How do you cope with classes and baking?

That`s a big question. Well, I go to class in the morning/ afternoon, then bake at night and weekends. It has not been easy though.

Does your brand supply outside of UI or just within the confines of UI?

Yeah, I supply outside of UI and not just within UI, sometimes outside the state.

How do you thrive these days where we have many people into baking, catering and the likes, how do you make your sales?

Hmmmmm, this is like saying having many people selling the same thing at the market. well, we all have different customers and also, the quality of your product will speak for you. Back to the question, I sell cupcakes around school in which I also employ students that help sell at different faculties. So, I make sales daily, no matter how little it is.

This is really inspiring, you are making money and as well creating job opportunities for students who can as well earn by helping to sell cupcakes

Yeah, Exactly. That`s the goal, to create job opportunities for students.

How can students reach you, in case they want to buy or work?

They can always reach me via the followings: Whatsapp- 08138538209, Instagram- Teefehs_bite Facebook: Teefehs Bites. Email: teefehsbites@gmail.com.

Do you offer training services for students in case they want to learn?

Yes, I do offer training and at a discounted price for students.

Is it advisable for freshers to go into entrepreneurship, if yes, how can they do it without it affecting their primary objective on campus?

Well, a fresher can go into entrepreneurship, but it depends on the type of entrepreneurship they are going into. I won`t personally advice a fresher to go into baking, because it`s time consuming. But works like, hair dressing, make-up, wears sales and the likes can be easily merged with academics. In short, freshers should just find a work that won`t be time consuming so it won`t affect their primary assignment here on campus.

What Challenges do you face as a student entrepreneur?

One major challenge I`m having is finding time for myself. You know, thinking about business and education at the same time is a lot already, now finding time to take care of one self is like an additional burden.

What actually keeps you going despite all odds?

Well, where I`m coming from my family, keeps me going.

Give us your parting shot/advice for Freshers and student entrepreneur

Well, to the fresher`s , that idea that`s coming to your head, embrace it, that might be the golden ticket that will take you to good places you never imagined yourself to be. And to student entrepreneurs, it is important to keep going even when you feel like quitting the business, just think of what made you start at first, think about the effort and plan you have put into that business, every business has a time of storm, but it will surely pass, please don`t quit.

Thank you very much

Thank you for giving me the opportunity.

HOW TO MAINTAIN GOOD HEALTH IN SCHOOL

By Seilat Olaide

School could be an instrument of neglecting a good health because of the stress, and workloads that comes with being a student. In the process of striving for good grades and meeting up with school expectations, many students tends to neglect their health by skipping meals, taking unhealthy meals and keeping up with poor hygiene. However, students can prevent these negligence by creating a balance between academics and sound health.Health is wealth and this wealth shouldn’t be taken with levity to avoid deterioration that will directly affect academic performance. In order to maintain good health the following should be followed in school to promote good healthy state.Eat variety of nutritionSticking to a particular nutrition will mainly cause problem to the health, there are varieties of nutrition which human must consume to foster a balanced diet, and from a balance diet the body will acquire necessary nutrient to keep it healthy and nourished. OVERCOMING THE TIDE

By: Josephine Awomodu

Being a student in a Nigerian university is a hurdle to cross, it doesnt seem rosy and easy. From the moment you gain admission up to the time you become a bonafide student, it becomes a battle of the strongest between 2 participants, the student and the school. You, as the student, is caught between the need to make excellent grades and the need not to fail any course. Here are some for you to overcome the tide:1. Do not underestimate any course no matter the hype. Predecessors could say, “that course is simpleyou don’t need to read I’d say, “please read, study, read, and study”. Take every little and every simple course like they’re difficult. Take every course that seems difficult more seriously.2. Now that you have known your courses, identify your weaknesses and strengths. Identify which course is likely to be your strength, and leverage it. Likewise, identify the one that could pose to be your weakness and tackle it. 3. Structure a schedule for your courses. Create a timetable that suits you well; create something within the time frame to which you can commit.4. Dont violate your schedules. If you set your timetable for Monday, 4-6p.m, with ABC and XYZ courses, do not violate it, come what may and ensure you respect the dictates of your timetable.5. Now, make every single commitment worth it. Don’t just read, don’t just follow your timetable. Make your dedication valuable, ensure that you’re learning during your study time and be intentional in your studying. Study to understand, to know and to remember. In conclusion, study in a smart manner, don’t just study hard. Be smart about it so as to maximize your time.Happy resumption, Assesaites! The press wishes you a sweet one!

HOW TO COPE WITH THE STRESS OF BEING A STUDENT IN UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN

BY: FPO

Welcome to a new session in the First and Best University, to the Freshers, congratulations and to the staylites, welcome back to school. School has started and classes are also starting, the hectic academic work load is beginning to choke? Here are some tips on how to cope with the stress of University of Ibadan.First of all, what’s stress? According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, Stress is a state of mental tension and worry caused by problems in your life, work, studies etc. Also, stress is something that causes strong feelings of worry or anxiety. In an institution such as university of Ibadan, a lot of things tend to stress up the students especially the newly admitted students, some of which may include;1. Difficulty in balancing school works and social life: This is the problem most newly admitted students encounter, balancing school work with social life might be conflicting at first, but with time everyone should adapt to balancing the two.2. Loneliness: Loneliness might also cause stress, it might take some time to adapt to life without your family, and some might even be home sick or feel disconnected from their new environment.3. Financial difficulties: Financial problems can also cause stress, brooding on how to solve your financial problems can as well prove to be stress demanding.4. Exam anxiety: University of Ibadan is well known for her high academic standards and high grade examinations, this can make the newly admitted students and even the staylites to get worried about their exams which also causes stress. With some of the causes of stress mentioned above, the following are what can be done to reduce academic stress.1. Exercise: This is very important, exercise helps you to stay fresh and sharp and helps to ease stress. After a hectic day, you can just take a walk out in the night or better still go to the gym for some exercise. Do not underestimate what exercise can do for you.2. Talking to someone: a sure cure for loneliness is finding someone to talk to as talking to someone helps to empty your mind. It will also help you to reduce the mental stress of keeping lots of thought in your mind.3. Time management: In a University where you are all alone and where you make decisions are of independent, it’s important to know how to manage your time and do the right thing at the right time. Read when you are supposed to read, sleep when you need to and eat when you need to.4. Eat well and sleep well: Exercise, talking to someone, time management is important but eating and sleeping well is “importanter”. Eat a complete balanced diet and sleep when you have to.My advice to all Assesaites either fresher or Staylite is to avoid stress and unnecessary anxiety, and take life easy unto a one step at a time.

FINALLY HERE AFTER A LONG COMPULSORY BREAK, SHOULD WE REJOICE?

By: The Scribe

Along the walk of academic journey embarked on few years ago, the charging tyres that fuels the run has almost worn out. It gave these red signals not because of indolent acts, but it has elapsed its expiry date. Such a scenario when a walk of four calendars was unfairly extended to one of seven calendars, when the rightful path shown to is now likened to one of faint prosperity. This and many other similar thoughts filled my heart during the just concluded mandatory break. The 7-8 months stay off book walls came to me unprepared like a thief in the night. The above were the words of a Nigerian student whose simple arithmetic forecast calculation of his graduating year was dealt a huge blow following the just ended eight months long strike. It proved to be a range of months that showed forth the future that awaits education stand in Nigeria, not only that, it was in fact a rough glance to the experience of after-school hunt students tend to face. The experience to some was one that came all welcomed as it gifted to them a chance to explore themselves, their environs and fatten their bank accounts while to others, they were banked on the claws of silent days. All back in school with broken heart, emotional drains, half dead brains, loss of aura to charge for academic excellence like before and the hope for a better tomorrow. After 8 months of back and forth between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the president of the union came out to express lines of seeing light in the issue for the first time, some even joked to question why the light was never envisioned at the beginning of the tunnel (smiles). Either way, the fact that innocent students had to stay off school and wander all across the country with lots of destinies at stake remains a matter that raises question marks.

A HOUSE DIVIDED AGAINST ITSELF, CANNOT STAND

Every house divided against itself can not have maximum progress, it is said that there is power in unity, and while a person chases a thousand, two persons can chase more than that. The primary goal of all stakeholders in a society should be the advancement of the society, irrespective of the personal interest and gratification. In the word of Jesus Christ, “ He said Every Kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation: and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand“. This has a huge implication has a house divided against itself will not stand but fall.In the words of Abraham Lincoln, a member of the Republican Party, he was chosen to run against Stephen Douglas of the Democrat party for the U.S senate.Lincoln`s speech was specifically about the problems of slavery in the United states. Lincoln hoped to use a well-known figure of speech to help rouse the people to recognition of the magnitude of the ongoing debates over the legality of slavery. His speech goes thus:“ A house divided against itself cannot stand. I believe the government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free. I do not expect the union to be dissolved- I do not expect the house to fall- but I do expect it will cease to be divided. It will become all one thing or all other. Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it where the public mind shall rest in ultimate extinction; or its advocates will push it forward till it shall become alike lawful in all the states, old as new- North as well as south. In his speech, the house refers to the union-to the United states of America- and that house was divided between the opponents and advocates of slavery.Abraham Lincoln stood his ground on the subject, although he didn`t win the election that year but that paved way for him to win the 1860 US presidential election.Dear, ASSESA Executives, parliamentarian and every concerned persons, the success and advancement of our dear department lies solely on every individual, all personal interest should be put aside, the achievement of the goals of the association depends on all stakeholders.United we stand, divided we fall. A house divided against itself cannot stand. I end this with a short story, A father called his four year old son to help dip his hand into a prayer/ ablution kettle(Age) , at first I didn`t understand what was happening, until I noticed the man`s hand cannot enter the kettle to wash, I was intrigued by this act because it shows the relevance of every persons irrespective of age, status and role e.t.cASSESA stakeholders, irrespective of your roles or statuses in our dear department, let unity be the watchword.

FACULTY OF EDUCATION HOLDS FRESHERS ‘ ORIENTATION

By: Blessing Opeyemi

The Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan held her Freshers’ Orientation for the 2021/2022 session tagged Education still the way? on the 4th of November, 2022 in the faculty Large Lecture Theatre.

The event which was stated for 10:00am started at about quarter to 12 noon with lecturers and freshmen in attendance in the large lecture theatre.

The President of the faculty, Reuben Georgeana, welcomed everyone present to the event and apologized for the change in the commencing time of the event which was due to power outage in the university.

The first session of the orientation program, facilitated by Dr. S. O Meroyi was the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) calculation session. After congratulating the students on their admission into the University of Ibadan, he noted that their academics which is the main purpose of being in the university should not be neglected. Required, compulsory and elective courses have their peculiarities but the freshmen should endeavour to pass all the courses they would end up registering for in the University because CGPA is calculated based on the number of units registered. According to him, “once you fail a course, even if you end up having a 4-points when you retake the course, it doesn’t really affect the CGPA positively”. The session was rounded off after he taught the freshmen in attendance how the CGPA is calculated from the units of courses registered and the points gotten from each course.

The second session which was about psycho-social adjustment in the university environment was handled by Dr. Olukemi Akinyemi, a counselling psychologist in the department of Guidance and counselling, Faculty of Education. Dr. Olukemi emphasized on the deliberate efforts that should be put into fitting well into the university system. As freshmen in the university environment, for some, it is a new territory, a first taste of freedom; and if careful steps are not taken, they could be maladjusted. “As freshmen, whenever you wake up in the morning, look at your palm and read them because your future has been written there by God. You must be focused and not give room for disturbances and distractions”, she said.As a counselling psychologist, she had had a first hand experience of how maladjustment, distractions and disturbances can truncate the main aim of coming to the University in undergraduate students’ lives, having worked in the youth friendly centre for a decade. “As students, you should give more attention to your main aim of coming to the University which is getting your degree, you should not be distracted by clubs, societies or religious activities too much. There would be lots of time to do that later”. Before she ended her session, she emphasized on the importance of time management, maintaining good health and good nutrition, choosing the right company and being in the right circle/relationship.

Hon. Victor Olojede, the Special Adviser to the Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, was the Keynote speaker of the topic ” Education, still the way?” He talked extensively about the outlook of education in the country and how much the value of education has deteriorated. The meagre salaries of government workers, the recent 8-months old ASUU strike, the rate of unemployment and the high cost of living in a country like Nigeria.According to him, on an individualistic level, education is not the way when the cost of living and the earning power of government workers cannot be compared to people who learn a skill and ‘hustle’; but on a national level, education is still the way because only education can liberate a country. However, at the end of his speech, he advised the tertiary institutions in Nigeria to be deliberate about teaching students in the university meaningful skills that could make them earn livelihood asides using the degree gotten from the universities.

Other lecturers and student personalities in attendance were the Undergraduate Sub Dean, Dr. Tolulope Gbadamosi, Dr. Stella Uduak, Student Union Executive- the President, Adewole Adeyinka(Mascot), the Vice President, Oluotanmi Zainab, the P.R.O,Olalekan Michael Ajibola, OMA and the General Secretary- Bamidele Taiwo Paul, the faculty of Arts President, the first female President of the Faculty of Education, Miss Mary, a former Faculty of Education President, Mr. Awonusi Orimidara, and other Faculty of Education executives of the 2021/2022 administration.

By: Blessing Opeyemi

The Gender Mainstreaming Office of the University of Ibadan, represented by Dr. Stella Odiaka sensitized the freshmen of the faculty of education during the 2021/2022 academic session faculty orientation program held on the 4th of November, 2022.

The office is headed by Professor. Olapeju Aiyelagbe is saddled with duty of handling issues of gender and sexual harassment in the university environment. It has a goal to prepare a gender policy for the University of Ibadan. The Gender Policy shall apply to, all staff of the University, all students of the University, all contractors of and service providers, all visitors to the University and other groups of persons in the University, including but not limited to children, wards, and other dependants of staff.

The freshmen were instructed not to overlook any acts or instances of sexual harassment whether it be from fellow students or lecturers. Sexual harassment affects the psyche of the person that is being harassed and it causes distractions because such student would not be able to get the illicit thoughts out of his or her mind and thus can not concentrate on studies.

The Sexual Harassment policy of the University and the sexual harassment penalties set up by the school was read. Students were encouraged to always report every case of sexual Harassment and they should not be afraid to talk because they would be protected and not implicated. According to Dr Stella, “When you report any case to the gender mainstreaming office, we report the case to the Dean of students who in turn reports the case to the Student Disciplinary Committee (SDC)”.

Students have a big role to play in reporting cases of sexual harassment. This is why there are morally upright and responsible student who are spies in every department and level in the university environment who reports any traces or cases of sexual harassment to the Gender Mainstreaming Office.

The Gender Mainstreaming Office is located in Room 5, Student Affairs Complex; other members of the department include Dr. Yinka Egbokhare, Prof. Bola Adelore, Dr. Tolulope Gbadamosi – the Undergraduate Sub Dean of the faculty of Education -, Prof. Olapeju Aiyelagbe.

The gender mainstreaming initiative of the University of Ibadan derives from the focus on gender equity which is strongly embedded within the framework of fundamental human rights and gender justice.

ASUU STRIKE: THE ART OF TRANSFORMING ITS DAMAGE TO OPPORTUNITIES

By : Seilat Olaide

The strike that has taken place as a result of the federal government inability to meet up with ASUU demands has lasted for over a month now and we are still counting as the union further subscribed to an additional two months strike on Monday March 14, 2022. Institutions and academic nativities have now witnessed a temporal stand still; as a result of this, students have been automatically sent packing by these actions for their primary objective has been decorated with a pause key. It is sad news to the students knowing the academic calendar has been disrupted due to the ongoing strike. This gives them thoughts and lamentations concerning the extension of the academic life, and plans connected to it being altered. However, this strike hasn’t totally cut anyone off from engaging in various activities that might bring great impact to their lives; there are several things students can engage in during this ASUU strike. They shall be therefore examined.

LEARNING A SKILL

Students can engage themselves in learning any skills of their interest which will equip them vocationally. These skills could come from online platforms where several 21st century skills are taught. These include digital skills, soft skills, marketing skills, which aids effectiveness in different sections of an organization. Nevertheless, learning skills are not restricted to these online platforms. There are several manipulative skills which includes fashion designing, bead making, soap making that can be learnt to ensure self reliance and financial independence to further stimulate moral responsibility in the society.

FINANCIAL MINING

Making money requires a lot of strategies, effort and time. Looking on the bright side of a gloomy situation, the time has been set due to the break while the strategies and effort are those important skills needed to make money during the break. Student can resort into starting a mini business or getting engaged in an online job to keep themselves busy and make adequate, legal money which can be saved or set available ahead of resumption. Students can also make themselves available for any volunteering or internships in their fields. These involvements will create the avenue to hopefully make money and accumulate (more) skills.

STUDYING

A break resulting from ASUU strike shouldn’t be seen as a period to remain idle. One can engage in the act of reading different beneficial books ranging from online (academic) articles to novels which open the mind to diverse knowledge, equipping one with diverse ways of approaching and handling different situation. This could indirectly foster networking, among mates and like minds stemming from the likelihood of sharing information concerning courses to offer after the break.

MENTAL HEALTH

This is a period where lots of people go through episodes/phases of one mental health issues or the other. The lack of engagement opens doors to different thoughts that could trigger mild depression, anxiety attack. To prevent these issues from happening requires mental health care which includes a healthy diet, controlled worrying, reading more, reaching out to friends, going out on picnics, visiting a mental health therapist for help (if needed). All these set the pace for a healthy mind and therefore saves one from any issue that could hinder optimum performance.

EXERCISE ENGAGEMENT

Exercising is a way of keeping the body fit and healthy. There is a need for constant health watch to build a good health. Staying healthy requires hard work and one of the ways to ensure this is engaging in exercise activities. Exercise reduces the risk of heart disease, it helps with mood and mental health regulation, it helps with weight control, and also in management of body blood sugar; these are beneficial to maintain a good health and one could devote time so as to attain the health benefits during this period.

The activities discussed above amongst others posit that the strike action may seem a time waster, many might swim in the waters of idle state but personal growth and development can be achieved. In essence, this period can be a moment of accumulating skills, knowledge, money, an achieving stability in necessary areas.

ASSESA DCC SUSPENDS ASSESA VICE PRESIDENT

By: Temitayo OJEDIRAN

The Arts and Social Sciences Education, Departmental Consultative Council suspended Miss Promise Oshimyemi(Assesa Vice President) from attending any meeting that involves the DCC and the executives.

This suspension was triggered by an unparliamentary actions displayed by madam Vice President in a meeting which took place on the 9th March, 2022 at the faculty premises.

Prior to the suspension, Madam Vice President and DCC chairperson (Hon. Ijaiya Romola) had an intensed exchange of words on the subject (if the DCC should approve her own budget or should involve the Executives)
DCC chairperson (Hon Romola) opined that the DCC should be able to present and approved her budget while Madam Vice President (Miss Promise) disagreed and said there should be a form of check and balance, the DCC can’t present their budget and still be the one to approve it.

Hon Romola reacted by saying madam Vice President could only show her rudeness because she has been granted permission to speak in the sitting , she further said Madam Vice President would be suspended from every other Departmental Consultative Council Sitting till the DCC is dissolved..

However, Honourable Timi (300l Constituency) appeased to Madam Vice President (Miss Promise) to please respect the Constitution and the power vested on the DCC chairperson.

Madam Vice President said the DCC chairperson should as well respect her as the Vp because she also has powers vested in her, “I will like to take my leave because I can’t be in a meeting where I would not be allowed to speak moreso I’m not supposed to be in this meeting, President only sent me to represent her in the meeting with the staff adviser and not this”
After seeking for permission to leave the meeting , madam Vice President was not granted permission to leave, she then walked out of the meeting.

While reacting, Honourable Ogunmefun Samuel( 200l Constituency) Said Madam Vice President should not go unpunished, he suggested various punishments such as letter of apology, suspension because she was rude not just to the DCC chairperson but to the legislative arm of the department( DCC) he therefore described her actions as unparliamentary.

Honourable Timi( 300l Constituency)also said it is unparliamentary and he believed what happened between the chairperson and Madam Vice President is beyond what was displayed here and that there may be some personal issues attached to the exchange of words that happened between the DCC chairperson and Vice President.

The DCC therefore suspends Madam Vice President from attending any meeting between the DCC and Assesa Executives, and Madam Vice President must also submit an apology letter to both the DCC and the DCC chairperson.

In attendance include: Hon Success (100l constituency) Hon Samuel Ogunmefun (200l Constituency) Hon Timi ( 300l Constituency), Hon Abimbola(400l constituency) and Hon Romola Ijaya(DCC chairperson).

ASSESA UI DCC APPROVES THREE THOUSAND AS BASIC DUES OF THE DEPARTMENT

The Arts and Social Sciences Education Student Association University of Ibadan Departmental Consultative Council (DCC) has approved the budget of the Executive Council and the sum of three thousand Naira (#3000) as the basic dues of the department.

After several meetings, the DCC finally approved the basic dues in a meeting which was held at the departmental secretariat on the 28th of February,2022. The Executive Council presented their budgets to the DCC except the Public Relations Officer and Social Director who were not present in this final meeting due to some personal reasons.

After all delibrations and scrutiny especially to the budget of the General Secretary, Miss. Adetola Marvellous Oluwatomisin, the executive council’s budget was approved.

ASSESAITES will pay the sum of three thousand naira(#3000) as basic dues(compulsory) , the sum of two thousand, five hundred naira (#2,500) for the departmental shirt(optional) and two thousand naira (#2,000) for departmental dinner(optional) for all levels.

The meeting which was slated for 11am started some minutes past 12pm and it had in attendance the DCC chairman, Hon. Ijaiya Aderomola, other DCC members except the honourable representing the 100L constituency, Hon. Success Olaniyi, the executive council, press persons, with no observer in attendance.

Other matters discussed in the meeting was the postponement of the appointment of an ad-hoc electoral committee to conduct the bye election for the office of the academic welfare director, sports secretary and a Faculty Legislative Council member to represent the 300L constituency.

According to the DCC chairperson, the electoral committee from the 2020/2021 association has not been dissolved and therefore has not presented it’s reports on the last conducted election which makes it impossible to create an ad-hoc electoral committee to conduct the bye elections.

Assesaites can now start making their payment at the Departmental Secretariat as from tomorrow 2nd March, 2022.

Interview

Mentor of the week

By John Herald

The ASSESA press mentor of the week is Bodunde Ebenezer Olayemi (p.k.a Speaking Eben). He’s a public speaker, a student politician and a one time president of the faculty of science before his resignation. In this intervie, he talks about his studentship, his brand name and public speaking career, how he became a student politician until his resignation.

ASSESA PRESS: Can we meet you ?

SPEAKING EBEN:Okay, thank you. My name is Bodunde Ebenezer Olayemi popularly known as SpeakingEben.

I am a 400L student of the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science, University of Ibadan.

ASSESA PRESS: Tell us the story behind the name speaking Eben

SPEAKING EBEN: Ohhh😌The name “SpeakingEben” originated from within. I’ve been a debater since my Secondary school days and when I got to University of Ibadan, I had to pause since READING was the order of the day for any fresher. It got to a point in 2019, I was in 200L then, I suddenly felt this zeal and passion to start public speaking again and this led me to joining my Hall, Department and Faculty literary and debating society and by the Grace of God, I’ve done well in that area with many awards.

This name came into play one day when I was thinking of a brand name I could give myself. I once named myself “Fingers of David” because I play the piano but at that point, I know I needed a name in the public speaking sphere. The first name that came to my mind was “EbenSpeaks” and with joy in my heart, I went online to look up the name and to my surprise, I saw an American motivational speaker bear that name. I kept thinking and thinking again and then BOOM!!!!!, the name “SpeakingEben” came from within. It sounded so cool and beautiful to me that I knew that was it. I looked it up online and discovered that it’s a Divine name for just ME.😌

ASSESA PRESS:How have you been able to cope with academics and speaking? Speech requires lot of time to prepare and all?

SPEAKING EBEN:Hmmmm. That’s a big question!!

Well, I must say it has not been easy and the truth is, you can only make this work if you set a scale of preference. There was a time I was opportuned to represent University of Ibadan in a debate competition and I had to go to Lagos for a week. I had to give my note to a friend to write it for me for that one week. There were periods I didn’t do my tests well because I had to prepare for Jaw war speeches. Things like that will come up, YES and that is why you have to do the extra. When I have few days to tests or exams, I devote myself to voracious reading because that’s the only way I cover up. At times like that, MTN and TDB together on a go looks normal to me and I do it…

As much as I love public speaking, Our Academics is our priority and we must try every best to get the best out of it.

ASSESA PRESS:At what point did politics come into Picture?

SPEAKING EBEN:Well, Politics has always been in the picture from day 1 but I only had one ambition, being the Faculty of Science PRESIDENT and that’s why I didn’t contest for any political post from 100L to 300L

ASSESA PRESS:Tell us more ,what have you been doing all this while before you finally contested?

SPEAKING EBEN:I’ve been doing what I do most. Speaking and building interpersonal relationship with people.

ASSESA PRESS:Recently, theres news that you resigned as the Faculty of Sciences president, can you tell us what really happened?

SPEAKING EBEN:Hmmm. It’s a whole lot and I wouldn’t like to talk much about it but I will say; Resigning was the best thing to do at that point.

SPEAKING EBEN:Can you just give like a snippet of the whole saga?

Well, at the time of the election, I was not a financial member of the institution and I wasn’t supposed to contest. Some documents were required to be submitted and I didn’t submit complete documents. To me, resignation is more honourable then disqualification and that is why I resigned.

ASSESA PRESS:What’s the next step?

SPEAKING EBEN:Next step????

Help the Faculty in the best way I can. Try to fulfil some of my plans that can be fulfilled with or without holding a position. Work on self development and keep the name going “SpeakingEben”

ASSESA PRESS:Yea

I personally know Speaking Eben before now. You organised a training one time like that last year

SPEAKING EBEN: Yes. It’s a global name.

Oh yes. Beyond Academics 1.0. Those that attended know it was super wonderful and some of them have not recovered from the experience.

We will be having Beyond Academics 2.0 this year, stay anticipating!

ASSESA PRESS: What advice do you have for UI students in general?

SPEAKING EBEN: Well, I will start by saying, “According to Nigeria Bureau of Statistics, 60% of graduates don’t use their certificates every year”. This is to say that 60 out of every 100 students don’t use their certificates.

While it is paramount and very important to read in 100L and have a good grade, it is also important we see Academics as a 50% chance for us.

What sense does it make to put all our 100 on academics and then after our service to the country, we come back to look for job and when there’s no job, we learn a skill???

Why not pick up a skill or work on an already existing skill, passion or potential and take it along your school journey. I mean, have an alternative for academics such that if the certificate does not yield at the end, you can easily fall back on your alternative…

It is only unwise that you put your 100 on Academics, go for service, find job and after not seeing any, start fashion designing, use your NYSC allowance to pay for training, learn for two years before you start getting money…

It is wiser if you pick up the Fashion Design from your school days and if there’s no job after service year, you use your Allowee to get a good machine and you start getting money…

I hope the wise understood my illustration

ASSESA PRESS: Thank you for your time.

UI MANAGEMENT EXTENDS SCHOOL FEES PAYMENT DEADLINE

By Blessing OPEYEMI

The University of Ibadan management has extended the fees payment deadline by two weeks.

The new deadline for fees payment is now Monday, 7th of March, 2022.

This was shared in a broadcast message signed by the Student’s Union president, Adewole Yinka (Mascot), the General secretary, Bamidele Taiwo and the Public Relations Officer, Olalekan Micheal tagged “Special Release 027 “Notice on Extension”.

The message reads in part: ” Following the appeal of the students’ union to the school management to extend the school fee payment by two weeks, the union is happy to inform the entire students of the university that the payment of fee has been extended by two weeks.” The students are then enjoined to comply with the directives of the university and pay up before the new deadline.

Prior to the extension, the school management has sent a directive that the school portal will close for fees payment on Monday, the 21st of February, 2022 because the frequent opening of the school portal results in technical issues.

In an interview with a 400L student of the department of Early Childhood Education, Faculty of education about how she felt about the extension, she replied “I feel relieved because there is no pressure that I have to pay the school fees when there will be traffic on the site. Also, I won’t be paying an extra ten thousand naira”.

The university of Ibadan resumed for the new 2021/2022 session on the 31st of January, 2022 while the over 4000 fresh students matriculated on the 15th of February, 2022.

ASUU STRIKE; SINGING SAME OLD SONGS YET AGAIN!

By: The Scribe

Barely one year after the recent Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike which lasted for almost 10 months amidst the pandemic outbreak, we are yet back again to the roundtables. Funny enough, we are arranging tables and chairs for the visit of hats and gowns they’ve gotten accustomed to, we are setting microphones to inhale the same set of words they’ve always breath-in and they will also be visited by same press folks who will publish similar bunch of news. With my knowledge of simple equation during my primary school days, I know that same calculation will project same result. I am sure we are all wise enough to know that doing and repeating same thing every time will always result in same end.

In the country we find ourselves in, we are made to believe ASUU strike is a custom and tradition that must be performed at some specialized point in time. A friend of mine recently voiced that ”somewhere in our mind, upon hearing or reading the acronym ASUU, what comes next to our heart is the phrase STRIKE. He went further to say the word ‘STRIKE’ now seem to be a new synonym for the acronym ASUU.” Again, it is now a norm for a public university student to automatically add 1 year to his/her years of study in a bid to pay respect to unforeseen circumstances (strikes). Maybe as from now on, they should increase this to 2 years as this strike tradition seem to be a yearly sacrifice.

In recent times, ASUU has been likened to a young man who is being owned the sum of ₦100,000. When he needs cash, he runs to his creditor and demands for the whole ₦100,000, his creditor gave him ₦10,000 and promise to pay up within the next 2 months. The man after receiving this ₦10,000 worries not his creditor for the balance and waits till he consumed the ₦10,000 before asking for his balance. By this time, the creditor is out of cash. The man who is meant to keep on pressuring his creditor to settle his credit as he has promised chose to lay low expecting his creditor to come in and drop the cash on his table as promised.

The activities and approaches of ASUU as being illustrated in the previous paragraph better explain why we experience the reign of strike almost every calendar. We’ve been singing this same song for the past couple of years, yet we are always camped in the hole. At every single strike that emerges, there are series of manifestations that are being delayed or cut short, some of these students even get uninterested towards anything pertaining to the four walls of education (dropping out) and some other lose interest due to the value they desire that has now been robbed off them. The saying that education is not a gift but a right seems to have lost its meaning, because if education is indeed a right then such shouldn’t be unfairly handled in this manner.

One question that keep running in everyone’s heart each moment the drama between ASUU and the Federal Government surfaces is, “why wage war every time over same issue?” “What were the deliberations of the last roundtable all about?” “Was the last strike action a camouflage which bears no result?” If it surely yields positives, dwelling round same old issue wouldn’t have to come alive. Can we conclude that this is all a comedy show purposely created for us by both parties to entertain us? No wonder Chris Ngige, Minister of Labor and Employment said ASUU only embarked on a leave but not a strike. Be it a strike action or a leave masked under the clothing of strike, we need answers and not only mere answers, there need to be a stop to all these comedy episodes. We are tired of it all.

Now that the same old song is being streamed yet again, how do we put a stop to it? We must recall that this is a country where less than 9% of its annual budget is dedicated to an economy developmental variable sector of education, there lies the root of it all. Arrangements should be set by each parties to find a way round this corner and make things right. Nigeria is a blessed nation filled with promising minds, then must we kill this off before we realize the bad deed that has been done? Must this country be attached to the title of destiny destroyer? Yet, we know that these ones we possess are the future we gather to build, why do we decide to act as both the builder and the destroyer?

Our only hope is that this one wouldn’t be a situation where we’ll have to be counting days, week and months that we’ve been deprived of education. We hope that as the roundtable routine resumes this Wednesday, February 23rd, and other subsequent meetings, it will bring positive results. For now, we can only keep our arms crossed in expectant of the drama fallouts. May it yield forth what our hearts truly yearn for.

EDITORIAL

DEAR NEW INTAKES, NOW THAT YOU ARE HERE…

The journey you embarked on two, three, four years ago has at last brought you to a deserving bus-stop; for series of others whom you set out on this same journey, they were left out and eaten up by the ravages of the road. Indeed, many were called but few were at last chosen which brings out the fact that having your dear letters engraved in the admission books of the premier university is all down to being privileged. Take note that I indeed recognize all kinds of effort you did put together to have made it all the way, but you will concur that GRACE is what crowns it all.

The 15th day of February, 2022 marked your official initiation to the “First and Best” University of the countryand to have made it all the way here is a clear mark that you truly deserve to be on this soil. The university which your heart has fell in love with which got you beautifully dragged here is at full arms to accept you – its new occupants and shower you with every beauty you mostly deserve. Rejoice, for what you truly seek, you shall claim it in numerous gifts. I mean, the knowledge and in-depth of it you look out for, here is the perfect environment to inhale it all across your dear mind.

Now that you are here, having experience series of delays amidst your route, the wait and buried moments surely worth the sacrifice. You’ve been gifted with a university which is widely known for a base that produces intellectuals, I hope you are prepared to learn, unlearn and relearn during the transformation process because by the end of this new journey, you will never remain the same again. Seeing your smiley faces wrapped under the cloaks of “at last” expressions, it sends down assurance down my spine that you are indeed ready for this new task.

Shall we begin? Sure. Take this not as an orientation but as just a piece of words to reshape your thoughts concerning the new world you’ve find yourself in. I won’t want to create a room of fright in the corners of your heart by saying this is an institution where the mighty falls. Yeah, it is a very different ground here where you need all you can (legit means) to battle it out. You are not in competition with anyone nor in a race with your course mates, the only mission you have here is surpassing your best each and every moment. There is the necessity of you to be wise and smart coupled with your intellects. Your dear God is there for you to cry unto, never you forget your Creator in this journey.

A very challenging situation for new intakes has always being the ability to adapt to the university’s environment and understand how activities run here. A mind that flows 100% actively is needed for you to learn how to understand the flow of the new atmosphere, try not to assume you know it all enough, make sure you induce calmness, take time to espy a view of what the university’s customs and traditions are and try to ask questions. Walk up to people who have felt the hot and cold of these environs for proper directions once the need arises. Even when it’s something you are aware of, you can still ask questions about it, perhaps you might learn a different and better way to approach it.

Finding you feet in the University of Ibadan proves that you surely deserve it and possess the merit of such, what the university prepare to add therein is just development. Don’t act too smart, I know you are the best in your respective secondary schools, I am aware you scored the highest in your JAMB across your region, I surely attest that you defeated the mighty Post-UTME; WELL DONE, but as from now on it’s all a new system. Don’t be deceived by the thought that you can bank on your personal knowledge to fight it all. See yourself as a new being who has nothing to show, create a new folder in your mind for the new lessons you are set to learn, trust me, they are entirely new.

Across the country, the only institution where you still have to read to fail is the University of Ibadan. There is a huge difference between reading and reading. The two ‘reading’ might look alike, sound as the same or even project same dictionary meaning but they are relatively different. Some people read blindly forgetting to take note of important areas while we have ones who read smartly enough to take note of the essentials and key concepts of the course they are studying. You need to crave for the indulgence of intelligence which helps you to read and take note of key areas, it will also enhance a mind that understands how the course lecturer model and style is.

More emphases have been placed on the ability of being smart. It’s not meant to be an overstatement but the University of Ibadan is a world created for those who are smart enough and that acts as careful as possible. It has been found that people who scale high academically in the university are those who are genuinely filled yet act as though they know nothing. What this implies is that you don’t see yourself as being aware of it all or you’ve acquire all you need to get an ‘A’ in a course, always seek for more and ask for more, therein lies the key to ‘A’s. Nothing is guaranteed, you work for the results, be it a green or red result. Also, fill yourself with the companion of the wise and those who know more than you do, you learn to be proactive and productive in such manner.

Set your goals as of now so that you know what’s at stake; learn the ways and approach to achieving it and be aware of the efforts to inject in. It is necessary you build a solid foundation for yourself, it’s easy to mount on that way than making a run on a weak buildup. Welcome to the world of intellectuals, welcome to the best ranked university of the country, I hope you make a wise use of this wonderful opportunity fate has placed in your hands.

ASSESA-UI’s Vitality Team hands over to new executives

The previous administration of the Arts and Social Sciences Education Student Association University of Ibadan; the Vitality Team has handed over to new executives elected in the last departmental election. The handing over ceremony was held on Friday, 21st January 2022 at A204/A205, Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan.

The handing over ceremony started a few minutes past three o’clock in the afternoon. After the opening prayer, the outgoing President, Rebecca Amoko did a review of the last administration, it’s activities and achievements which includes the acquiring of a new patron, getting a signpost for the department, opening a departmental library and most importantly, winning the Dean’s Cup in the last football competition.

The Staff Adviser Dr. Samuel Babalola was in attendance and he commented on the achievements and tenacity of the Vitality Team; and essentially praised their abilities in seeking counsels before making decisions. Appreciating the outgoing administration, he advised the succeeding administration to build upon the greatness that has been laid down by the preceding administration.
The Staff Adviser directed the newly elected executives in taking the Oath of Office and welcomed the Adetoun-led administration into their new executive offices.

The outgoing President in admonishing the newly sworn-in executives said it is not easy to stir the affairs of the department but the newly sworn-in executives should always remember the promises and plans they made in their manifestoes and make efforts in turning them into actions.

Furthermore, she said that it is not possible to fulfill all plans in the manifestoes because even she herself was only able to fulfill about 70% of her manifestoes. Most importantly, the ability to strike a balance between administration and personal life is paramount. Commenting on the administration as regards her gender, she said it was a bit perplexing for her to administer the members of the cabinet excellently but she hopes the new president would be able to steer new waters.

Williams Sekinat, the erstwhile Vice president of the department reinforced the importance of unity among the executives. Also, in having a good relationship with the Departmental Consultative Council (DCC), she suggested that the executives should make sure their expenses never exceed the budgets of the department.

Other people in attendance were other members of the previous and new administration, Press persons and some students of the department as observers.

POLITICAL APATHY: IS THE PRESS A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR?

Picture of Political Aspirants during a press night

By: The Scribe & Josephine Awomodu

“The most important responsibility we have as journalists is to question those who are in power. I honestly believe that.” – Jorge Ramos

Background

Within the shores of the political activities that were displayed few weeks ago, it was recorded that the fill of series of positions been unopposed represents the apathetic behavior that has now settled its claws into the atmosphere of the university. Owing to this, individuals have been searching for clarifications on why things have  turn out this way and why the political contest is decorated by series of sole aspirant vying for a post. Notably, there have been recent talks that the Press promotes apathy through the manner it strictly wield aspirants during the course of Press nights, that the dramas and displays of such is enough to chase the thought of vying for a post off one’s mind. Is this actually a fact or just an attempt to black fade Press nights?

Vox Pop

To better have a clear picture of what majority of student feel, a short question was administered. The replies to the question – ‘There are talks that the press influences political apathy through press nights. What is your take on this?’ are as follows;

“Yes I know of a Sociologist who when he was asked to run for a post, he humbly declined…why? ”No be me go do press night”. So to answer your question, yes it induces apathy in those students who might want to contest for political posts. But for voters during election I don’t think press night counts much anymore because they see press night as where an association that has been dormant and irrelevant for most of the session comes out to bare their fangs at their political candidates.” - Seun Olurin, Political science 200l

“I am neutral. It depends largely on the support you have. No pressman can shift the support you have because you couldn’t answer questions or something. The press night is just for them to go over your plans and stuff. It’s just for them to come and criticize your plans and tell you the things that they think cannot be achieved. The press influences the people’s decision when the support for the candidate is not strong and they don’t influence when the support is strong. It all depends on the support of the candidate.” – Favour Olugbade, Educational Management

“If their activities are professionally carried out, then I feel students shouldn’t be discouraged to engage in politics, but if otherwise it would bring in political apathy.” – Anonymous, Educational Management, 200l

“Dislike for the press – because they have a poor impression of the press, some people do not seek elective positions, they believe that the press night will be used by journalists to criticize them, making them appear unqualified for the office they seek. Fear of the press – some who are striving but without viable strategies, on the other hand, would prefer to stay back because the press would reveal their ineptitude.” – Isaac Boluwatife, Arts and Social Science Edu, 200l

“I feel the press night is meant to just access the candidate to test their performance and readiness, and if this is still in practice I don’t think press nights or press is not making people run for post, I don’t think its making sense. If there were to be no press night, we’ll only be seeing people coming with an agenda sweet to hearing but not achievable.” – Ayinde Toheeb, Sociology, 100l

Overtime, the political scenario has always being a top-notch battle between individuals who either thirst to acclaim the power it featured or to the core sense of humanity (to serve). Either way, individuals have always put in all efforts to surpass their counterparts in the race to emerge victorious. Activities of this shape have been accustomed with the need and right to contest for any political position of choice which connotes the engagement in politics thereby removing any trace of political apathy. Of recent, we’ve experience a situation whereby key positions are been battled out for unopposed or even seeing no one coming to contest for a particular post in some cases.

It was revealed that members of the public are of the opinion that Press night is a major contributor to political apathy. Some boldly claim that to contest for a position, the first thing that comes to the mind of aspirants is how to face and handle press night. We have the other party that feels the press night is just an avenue to put aspirants into pressure and make them suffer for just aspiring for a position. Actually, to every fact stated therein there will be reasons which are very evident – that; ASPIRANTS ARE SCARED OF FACING JOURNALISTS or simply put THEY ARE AFRAID TO DEFEND THEIR PLANS.

Let’s set aside confusions so as to put misconception off the books and set the facts right. Firstly, the role of Journalists is to serve as the mouth piece of the people by voicing out opinions and stating the public interests in matters that concerns them. These clearly defines the notion that the Press is all into efforts of ensuring the betterment of the public and making sure their rights are not being swept off. The public needs to note that the Press possesses a very powerful tool of putting the political holders into action when they refuse to or neglect such duty. The Press is simply the people’s popular voice.

Secondly, as a watchdog, the Press put a close watch on the activities of political holders so as to make them aware that their daily moves are under surveillance and also to place the sense and reminder of accountability in their minds. This way, the Press gets to remind them of their duties and promises, then make a warning to anyone who seems to have neglected, set aside or consciously and unconsciously forgot his plans. The presence and existence of the Fourth Estate has brought about the need to ensure these political office holders are well accountable of their positions. This is a stance that exists both at the center stage and in the student world.

Thirdly, the Fourth Estate or Press or Journalists serve the people to disseminate timely and essential information. These information as stated are ones that the public need to be aware of, these are done through news, features and the likes. Also, they affect people to think rational on matters arising in the society by bringing to them some fallouts and trending issues and then foreshadow what might occur later on. This is a notion that set to prepare the minds of the people towards any change. The press is also entrusted with the notion of uncovering the truth by revealing the hiding skeleton through a well citied investigative journalism. These are significantly paramount to the wellbeing of the entire society.

So, saying the Press body promotes political apathy through exercising its role of uncovering facts and ensuring the entire public is well represented by a responsible and capable individual (through scrutinizing plans of such candidate) is something that connotes misconception. Primarily, press nights are laid to achieve key objectives of exposing the ineptitude of the candidates, ensuring the plans of such are feasible and trying to know whether the individual is capable and knowledgeable of handling such position. Having a responsible candidate is not just about the individual being famous or good-looking; it goes beyond such personal fragmentations.

The press body is categorically known to be a friend and messenger of the entire public. The press is even a mutual friend to aspirants and political holders only when they know of what they claim to hold, once they fail in their duties or aren’t aware of their duties, troubles will surely rise, there will be the clash of words, and because the lines of the Press are always direct and instrumental, they (aspirants) feel intimidated. Actually, to enhance and ensure the right ownership of political positions by those who are qualified and responsible, there will be clash between the Press and aspirants. All these are centered upon to ensure we have a well-to-act and responsive tenant of political roles.

On Press night promoting political apathy, the misconception perceived here is sadden. It must be noted that press night exists so as to scrutinize the plans of aspirants and mark out the feasible and unfeasible plans. Also meant to ensure the aspirant is contesting for the post for a reasonable reason as about 80% of them aspire for post all in the name of recognition. Imagine having an aspirant who doesn’t even know his constitutional duties and can’t even defend his plans and clearly explain how he will achieve such. By criticizing someone of this, problem rises, then misconception arises that the Press is injecting pressures.

Aspirants should note that Press night is never a ground to battle words. You tend to see someone frowning faces or refusing to answer questions pushed to him, just imagine. As stated earlier, everyone is all in the motion to ensure proper and responsible representation. Press night is never a battle ground or tug of words between Pressmen and aspirants. The idea of coming to Press nights to throw a faceoff with Press men should not be encouraged. Aspirants should also ensure they are contesting for a good reason, posses a feasible plan and just appear friendly before the Press to boldly defend what they claim to achieve. So simple as A B C.

The Fourth Estate is a friend to all and enemy to none. The Press is shouldered with the need to ensure accountability and right representation, when these are not in place, fight surfaces. The Press do not in any way promote political apathy.

“A key purpose of journalism is to provide an adversarial check on those who wield the greatest power by shining a light on what they do in the dark, and informing the public about those acts.” Glean Greenwald

THE FIRST THING IS AS MUCH AS WE WANT TO PRIORITIZE THE INTEREST OF ASSESAITES, WE CANNOT IGNORE THE FACT THAT IT HAS TO BE IN LINE WITH WHAT WE CAN AFFORD –ASSESA President-Elect

ASSESA PRESIDENT-ELECT (MISS ADEPOJU ADETOUN)

By: OJEDIRAN TEMITAYO(HERALD)&BLESSING OPEYEMI

Good afternoon Miss Adetoun and Congratulations on your victory in the recent ASSESA election as the president elect.

Good afternoon. Thank you very much

How did you feel when you were declared winner of the election?

It felt surreal. It took me time to actually grasp what had just happened. I mean it was a tough one. Although I know so much about leadership and the problem wasn’t about leadership, it was that I’ve never been involved in the politics of the department. It was always like I’m a novice- talking to people, they’ll ask what experience do I have because they can’t give me the department to test run. Although I don’t have political experience, I put myself out there and talk about the things I’ve done for the department. It took me some days to come to the realization that I’ve actually won the election and so far, it’s been a good experience. It’s like the confirmation I was seeking. If someone had asked if I would go for any political post when I was in my first year, I would have said no because I was more of the bookie, career kind.

So, what led to the aspiration?

It was after I realized my reason of being in the department and  how much I loved my course. It was more or less like I was the only one seeing things they way I was seeing it(even in my small group). Most of us have this thinking that we would end up being teachers because we’re in the Faculty of education, it was a cycle and I was already exposed to something else and I felt the gap between Assesaites and opportunities. We don’t know the values we have as educators. As Assesaites we are here and we need to make the most of what we have. I joined Campus Labs as an intern and I’ve networked and learnt a lot. I know people who have a degree in education and are doing very well. I saw the need to expose people to things-those that are willing to catch up with these things. This is what birthed my idea; the need to be in a political post, work with like minds to redefine why we are here. It’s not something we can exhaust in an administration; it’s something we continue in exposing people to opportunities and how to really make things happen.

On the day of the election, did you see the winning coming?

Before I had an opponent, I knew it was an unopposed win. When I later had an opponent I knew it was a 50-50 for me while keeping an open mind. I’ve come to realize that politics in UI isn’t about having great content or being the best candidate. On the election day, something kept telling me the first set of people who voted didn’t vote for me but I had peace that day. I’m a writer and I had  jobs to do that day, so I had to leave the faculty, then back again. People kept coming to me to tell me I would win and I tried to keep smiling knowing fully well that it was a 50-50 for me.

What did you think made you win the election?

I don’t even know because at first, I thought it was the press night and screening results but later I realized it was not everybody that saw it. I really do not know but I had a small committee and I tried to reach as many 200 and 100 level students as possible. I knew the 400 levels are not always around to vote and even the 300 level votes was divided. I was not fully able to penetrate the 200 level but I was able to penetrate the 100 level -from tutorials, I knew most of them and I already told them I’ll be going for a political post before the ban was lifted- and that helped.

Election has come and gone; now the work is here. We’ll like to know what your fear is as regards the cabinet you’ll be presiding. We believe after the results of the election, you would have sat and thought through how you would preside and what might be a challenge.

The fear that keeps coming to my mind every time I think about it is how to preside over the cabinet. I like working in a team over working alone. The other executives have their own plans and how I would successfully merge everything and make sure every single person is working maximally without clash of power/position. We’ve had a meeting and it’s one thing to talk at the student level and it’s another to be a supervisor. If there’s any glitch or lack, it will reflect and bounce back on the president. The best way I’ve come up with is having a formal physical meeting where I get to know each persons and their temperaments. One thing i noticed in the previous administration is that not every executive worked maximally and it reflected. I believe in short term plans and task delegation. Also, building good relationships with them and not allowing that interfere with the administration.

Okay. Asides having physical meetings with them, hypothetically,  if there’s an executive who isn’t doing what he/she is supposed to do, how will you handle it? Knowing full well that some of the executives might perform below par which might affect the administration.

The first thing I’ll do in this inevitable situation is address the situation by talking to them. If this persists, maybe I’ll talk to their friends to talk to them. Some of them might still be adamant. Calling a formal meeting, addressing it directly in the presence of other executives or doing it backstage to make them buckle up and come back on track. Talking to the DCC is the best and last option after all options have been exhausted because some take issues serious only when external forces interfere. Talking to the appropriate body is like the best option because it will tell in a way on the administration and it would be said that the president can’t handle her team.

Well, we pray God gives you the wisdom to handle such situations whenever they arise. Two sessions ago, the DCC then suspended some executives because of some issues while no executive was suspended in the last administration. Critically examining both administrations, do you have any comments about their efficiency, in all honesty?

From what I can remember although I’m not 100% sure, the previous administration did more than this current one. Taking a lot into consideration although I didn’t know some of the previous administration executives were suspended.

The previous administration was on its toes and they had a number of achievements in the department (the press board, the secretariat) and even in the midst of the suspension, they still function. What People want is the ability to deliver, to serve after their votes has been given. The next question therefore is between the interest of the executives and Assesaites, which do you prioritize?

 The interest of Assesaites.

Let’s rephrase this. If Assesaites wants a thing and the executives are saying the departmental  purse can’t afford it, what will you do?

The first thing is as much as we want to prioritize the interest of Assesaites, we cannot ignore the fact that it has to be in line with what we can afford. We can probably make options, we need feedback from them and also carry them along. In that situation, except we source for funding which is not always guaranteed, we actually have to go with what we have on ground and also inform them. We don’t want a situation where they want A and get B without any explanation. Keeping them updated. Although you can’t please everybody, we will try to consult Assesaites before carrying out decisions.

Do you think the current administration consults Assesaites before carrying out most of their decisions?

No

Alright. One of the things we hope new executives understand are that  issues that were not addressed in the previous administration being addressed and implemented in theirs.  Let’s quickly wrap this up. You said you want to expose Assesaites to career opportunities and altering their mentality towards their courses.  You have this idea, how do you want to actualize this?

Yes. The main channel I’ll be using is leveraging on where I work. We organise different events. I plan on organizing two events – physical and virtual- taking all things into consideration to talk to Assesaites about career opportunities. I’ll be inviting CampusLabs and other companies through the work relationship I have with my company’s CEO. These companies will be coming to expose us by bringing professionals, successful people who have degrees in education to facilitate the events. The virtual event setting is to help us embrace the future of work and also network with the facilitators. One thing I’ve learnt about graduates of education, especially teacher education, is that they give mentorship and this is because they know most people don’t know what they know.  Also, there are skills we need in the outside world which we won’t be taught in the classroom, these organisations would give you the training grounds and push you out. Making you know nothing is impossible. Also, surveys will be taken before and after the events, follow ups which would be done online to know how well Assesaites are fairing and know whenever help is needed. These things might seem impossible but I know they are possible, with consistency.

That’s well said. If you assume office today, what is the first thing you’ll tackle?

Now, we’re in the exam period and based on now, the first thing would be to provide past questions.

Let’s assume it’s the beginning of the session and people are resuming. In your plans, what is the first thing to achieve?

The first thing on my mind is to launch the GP calculator. You know I can’t just start with events, you have to set the pace first. The CGPA/ incorrect transcript is  an issue in the department. Even I have errors in my transcript, there are scholarships I should have applied for which I couldn’t meet the deadline.  Although academics is not the only reason why we are in UI, we need to know where we’re on, where we’re going to and how to work towards it.

You said a vital thing now about errors in transcripts. What do you intend to do about it now that you’re in the position of power?

I think I indicated it on my manifesto that although I’m not in total control of it, I intend on meeting that current HOD, Prof.Amosun and make enquiries if there’s anything students can do to speed the process. Let’s identify the problem. I’m not saying I’ll personally fund it but let’s know what the problem is. Is it a thing we would need volunteers to handle because I know they can’t allow students to handle it?  I intend to have this discussion with him because the CGPA issue has really affected Assesaites, including me. I really hope that would help.

Thank you.  As beautiful as these things are, we understand that you’re entering your final year and there would be school works with administrative works. How do you intend to manage your time knowing fully well that as students, academics comes before politics but also, you’ve made a commitment to Assesaites and you have to deliver optimally?

I understand that. One thing that has helped me so far in having school works and extra curricular activities is the use of To-do list. Prior to now, I only have my school works and  no pressure but joining CampusLabs had made me ruthless with my time. I try as much as possible to have a to do list, separating what’s important from what is urgent.  Making this administration work is important. Working with companies has really helped me and now that I’m assuming a big role, I’ve been relieved of some duties at work so as to help in my delivery. I pray God would help me.

Give us your parting words, what you would like to tell all Assesaites.

I just want to tell Assesaites that irrespective of the level, I really hope we all come to the realisation of what we really want to do and the importance of the course we’re doing. My prayer is that this administration helps them and  moves them  closer in their career journey. Their coming to the UI, this department is not a mistake and whenever they remember this administration, they know it played a role and they made the best of their time in UI.

Thank you very much

 Thank you

EndSARS- Another Extension Of The Lagos State Judicial Panel Of Inquiry And Restitution: for victims of SARS related abuses and Lekki Toll Gate incidence

The tenure of the Lagos State Judicial Panel Of Inquiry And Restitution: for victims of SARS related abuses and Lekki toll gate incidence, has been extended by three months for the second time.
The chairman of the Panel and retired judge, Justice Doris Okuwobi, announced that the tenure of the Panel will now run until October 19 2021. The tenure was extended by three months as it was initially on April 27.
The Lagos State Judicial Panel Of Inquiry for #EndSARS related issues and Lekki toll gate incidence was established by the governor of Lagos state, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on October 27 2020, seven days after the Lekki massacre.
The panel was set up to assent to the Five-For-Five demands of the #EndSARS protesters for a period of six months. Alongside this, the panel was set up to look into abuses of security agencies, most especially the now disbanded SARS unit of the Nigeria police force.
The initial six months granted the panel to hear petitions was insufficient for the panel and subsequently, the panel was given an extension of three months. The initial six-month tenure expired on April 27, while the first 3-month extension was supposed to expire on July 19 but went on until June 29 when this new extension was announced.
In a bid to hear as many as petitions as possible before October 19, the panel says it will begin a prices called, “front-loading”. According to Justice Doris Okuwobi, “It is important that every petition or petitioner be given an equal duty of being heard and to achieve that task we have put in place amendment of front loading of the processes which will be more time-saving in terms of sitting and in terms of working outside the panel, Mrs Okuwobi, a retired judge, said. So, this will now take effect from the 2nd of August. It will determine the listing of fresh petitions which have not been opened.”
“The earlier you comply with the rules by front-loading, …we will then have cause to list fresh matters that can then come up before the panel. It is our appeal that petitioners in particular, who do not understand the process, seek advice on the front-loading. The rules are very clear, just. We want your evidence on the affidavit, evidence of your cases on affidavit.”
“What you have in petition just have to be put in place of an affidavit and sworn to the court, so the evidence of the witnesses. I’m sure petitioners are not going to have any difficulty with complying with the front-loading process. And all documents you want to present to the panel should come in ahead of the hearing of the petition and properly served on the respondents.”
The front-loading process means that the petitioners will state their petitions in writing and the panel will adopt it and begin cross-examination. Front-loading is a deviation from the usual panel session where petitioners orally recount their ordeals in the hands of security operatives before cross-examination from the state lawyers.

Procrastination and your health
By Opeyemi Blessing

In the past few weeks, I’ve come to realize that the only thing the University of Ibadan emits is school work, work, work and more work. Personally, in the last few days, I’ve had workloads that could last me weeks doing them and of course I just have to find time in my very tight schedule to fix them right and most of the time, I don’t do them until the deadline horn comes blaring. I’m a whole lot of a procrastinator and so are you. Well, maybe not you you but you and this means hoarding school works till the deadline monster comes roaring. You either do them haphazardly, not do them at all or do give your possible best in the main time while it takes a toll on your health later. Well, health, they say, is wealth, so you have to be cautious; also, knowledge is power, means you have to be double cautious (school works are important) and what’s worth doing at all is worth doing well, which ultimately implies you have to be triple cautious.
Procrastination is a condition that has consequences on one’s mental and physical health and performance at school and in the workplace. In a 2007 study published in the Psychology Bulletin, psychologist Piers Steel defines procrastination as “a self-regulatory failure leading to poor performance and reduced wellbeing.” Notably, Steel further emphasizes that procrastination is common (80% to 90% of college-age students suffer from it at least some of the time) and something most people (95%) wish to overcome. In his recent book, The Procrastination Equation, Steel even argues that procrastination may now be on the rise as people increasingly turn to the immediate gratification made possible by information technologies and specifically, social media platforms.
While age and heightened responsibilities (e.g., the need to care for a family) do help most people eventually keep their procrastinating tendencies in check, for a small percentage of people, procrastination isn’t just a temporary or occasional problem but rather something that comes to structure their lives and ultimately limit their potential.
So, how dire is procrastination? Below are a few of the many negative impacts procrastination has been shown to have on our mental, physical wellbeing.
Mental Health: A 2010 study, appropriately titled, “I’ll Go to Therapy, Eventually,” found that procrastination and stress are connected. Indeed, the study found that high procrastination is linked to poorer mental health and fewer “mental health behaviours” (e.g., regularly taking time out to relax and recover from stress).
Physical Health: In addition to the well-documented link between procrastination and mental health, there is growing evidence that procrastination can impact one’s physical health. In a 2003 study, Fushia M. Sirois and colleagues found that procrastination was “related to poorer health, treatment delay, perceived stress, and fewer wellness behaviours.” While a range of health conditions are impacted by procrastination, Sirois and colleagues have discovered that some conditions may be especially impacted by the behaviour. In a 2015 study, she concluded that procrastination is a factor that can lead to hypertension and cardiovascular disease (HT/CVD) and further concluded that the “maladaptive coping” associated with procrastination also appears to exasperate the symptoms of HT/CVD.

Procrastination is like a deadly poison that’s tasty. The idea of it scares you but once you have a drink of it, to take a bow and drop it seem like a hard but not impossible task. Take responsibility today and shun procrastination. Keep your health safe and your head sane.

Home is no Home

By Karshams
You woke up. It had dawned fully. Surprised by the failure of alarm to wake you, you almost shouted ‘mummy’. You wanted to call your mum and accost her on why she didn’t wake you up for school. She knew you were the head prefect and occupying such position shouldn’t be greeted with late-coming. Then you remembered. Like a flash of lightning, reality mixed with dawn came on you. You were no longer home. You are away from home.
You stayed in a cubicle with other two students who had flung their beds across the room in disarray before you were awake. What is the name of this hall? You asked yourself. At that moment, you find it difficult to provide an answer. And this is not the right time to start racking your brain. You wanted to cry. You remembered how your mum would prepare your breakfast, how your dad would take you to school. But things were not the same any longer. You were away from home.
Suddenly, you remembered you had a lecture to attend. Your first lecture as it were. You cannot sit it out, you thought. You picked up a bucket and fetch some water. You rushed into the bathroom and almost rushed out instantly. The bathroom stinks of ammonia. Somehow, you managed to take your bath. You checked your wrist watch; it’s 20 minutes to the lecture. You didn’t bother to take breakfast. You then remembered when you had once boasted to your friends that you cannot miss breakfast for anything during your secondary school days. But you were no longer in secondary school, you were now a university fresher.
Reluctantly, you went for the lecture. You were surprised at the huge number of students in attendance. You cannot get a seat at the front, so you sat at the back despite suffering from myopia. You were unhappy. The lecturer came in and he started the lecture but you could hardly pick his words. He was old and you felt he should have retired. Those devils of academia! The students too were not helping matters. Those behind you, in front of you and at your back were murmuring. You almost laughed when a male student said he had asked a lady out, but her reply was that he should go and learn proper English and try again later.
The lecture ended. You were the first to leave the lecture theatre. You met a few of your course mates. They greeted you. With your countenance, they asked what was wrong. But you couldn’t tell them, so you said all’s well. You headed back to your hostel. Now you can remember the name, it’s KENNETH MELLANBY HALL. You began to get angry when you remembered your room mates had scattered the room before they left for lecture. They were unserious elements and you swore never to relate with them.
It was evening time. It was your mum’s call that woke you up from your day dream. Twilight had slowly descended. You picked the call. Your mum asked about the situation of things. You wanted to tell her so many things. But you stopped. You don’t want her to cry. ‘All’s well mum’, you said. She seemed happy. She told you to face your studies and call home if you need anything. You acquiesced.
The power supply was restored. The room had been neatly arranged. Your room mates had done the needful. Your eyes fell on an inscription pasted on the wall. Your room mates had written their academic targets for the semester. Those you thought were unserious elements. But you hadn’t written yours. You want to become a creative writer. You would need to set your targets. ‘The journey begins now’, you thundered. So many things would be learned away from home. You would read. You would make your parents proud, away from home.

FEMINISM AND ITS OPPOSITIONS

By: Josmat Jerry

Overtime, we’ve witnessed some societal wrongs which were once thought to be norms of a well organized environment, talk about the killing of twins, the act of war like and so on. Actually, these ‘one time doctrines’ have in one way or the other projected more harm than good to the course of nature. As we live on in this 21st century, the ills of the society in aspect of inequality that exist between the male and female category (both young and old) still lives on. A lot still have the strong belief that the male category are of ‘more superior’ than the female category. But, isn’t this the origin of our societal problem?

A wide range of scenario plays on out there which are against the motion of feminism, why feel sad when you give birth to a baby girl? Why reason that a girl child brings forth no goodies to you just because she will be married off? Why treat a boy child better than a girl child? When you engage in some acts that against the image of gender equality, then you are opposing the stand of feminism. The presence of anti feminism is an unnoticed issue that lingers on within our environment which results in killing the potentials of females. These acts are wholly against the normalcy of a society that focuses on holistically development.

There exist countries where females aren’t considered to be leaders of a society, countries like Yemen, Pakistan, Chad, Syria, Mali, est., indirectly support the claim of inequality through the way they run their governance administration. As a matter of honor and respect, females are very much up to the task to lead and bring forth the required positive result in their own creativity. We all are greatly gifted, endowed and talented by the Creator; shouldn’t we all have equal chance to manifest these great potentials? Have females in one time or the other failed when called upon to take the lead role? Or is there any kind of proof or experiments that has been practicalised to act against the context of feminism?

A husband who is of negative attitude towards his wife’s success, one that thinks the role of a wife should be confined within the walls of the kitchen, a mind that proclaims the name ‘woman’ as one that deserves to be of second ‘always’, a man who sees himself as a boss in the domestic family thereby discarding the ideas and talks of his woman; all these various set of individuals are anti feminist. The role of the female gender to the drives and development of nature and the society is very much essential. With the presence of equality in place, there will be room to grab opportunities and manifest it all well.

Top unforgettable women like Marie Curie – the founder of the new science of radioactivity, Rosa Parks – a civil right activists, Emmeline Pankhurst – founded the Women’s Social and Political Union to campaign for the parliamentary vote for women, Ada Lovelace – a gifted mathematician and the first computer programmer, Margaret Thatcher – Britain’s first female prime minister, Mary Wollstonecraft – an English writer and philosopher who championed education and liberation for women, Eleanor of Aquitaine – one of the wealthiest women of the middle ages, Queen Victoria – one of UK’s most iconic monarchs and others.

Gender equality should be cordially addressed and approached with some in depth consideration as some folks practice anti feminism without consciously knowing they are all against its context and that of gender equality. Females are born the same manner males are, and the fact still remains that without a gender, another gender cannot live or succeed alone, that was why the Lord Almighty created a ‘partner’ for Adam and not a ‘servant’.
