MEET OUR MENTOR OF THE WEEK

MENTOR OF THE WEEK: HON. GUCCI

By: Temitayo OJEDIRAN(Herald)

Can we meet you?

Good Evening, my name is Sakariyu Waris Ajibola, a 300l student of Counselling and Human Development Studies, the General secretary of NUESA UI and the coordinator of Seyi Makinde Campus Ambassador(UI)

Most people call you Gucci, What`s behind the name?

I got the name on my first day in School. That day, we were having our hall registration and I was on the queue while a friend tried to call me, but because we are still not familiar with each other`s name, the guy called me Ankara Gucci because I was wearing Ankara and surprisingly it became a trademark(Politically) It was changed to Hon. Gucci when I was serving  as an Honourable member in Ransome Kuti hall.

Tell us basically about your love/passion for politics/leadership/power

My love for politics can`t be expressed with words. I have so much enjoyed discussions about politics since childhood, but I`ve never thought I would overcome the fear of participating in politics. At some point, I will see myself becoming a teacher, at another moment, I would think of becoming a pastor, but one path that I`ve been successful with is politics. The road has not been smooth , but despite the challenges and unpleasing moments, my love for politics kept waxing strong. I love politics, but I`m scared of power because of the mindset attached (intoxication), but I`ve gotten a solution towards the general negative mindset, which is “Character” So, I have gotten the knowledge of how to differentiate between being a ruler and a leader. I love to lead by feeling the piercing pain from the journey before my loyalist. If you can handle your character and make it better, I would advise you to participate in politics so we can prolong the existence of good governance and caring leaders.

Take us through all the leadership/political positions you have occupied before Ui and in Ui

  • Assistant Senior Prefect, Adewuni Model College 2015-2016
  • Floor rep, Ransome Kuti hall, Students` representative council, UI 2018-2019
  • Member of Finance Committee, Ransome Kuti hall, SRC UI. 2018-2019
  • Honourable member, Ransome Kuti, UI 2020-2021
  • Deputy Speaker Ransome Kuti hall, UI 2020-2021
  • Member Transport Complaint Committee, Students` Union 2021
  • Representative of CHDS at Faculty of Education Legislative Council
  • Chairman, FLC disciplinary Committee
  • General Secretary, NUESA UI
  • Coordinator, Seyi Makinde campus Ambassador

How were you able to cope with functioning in so many offices and your academics?

There is time for everything, time to read and time to lead. I`ve done some training on time management, and it has aided my diligence.

Checking through the positions you said you have served, you are the coordinator for Gov. Seyi Makinde campus Ambassador, how did you emerge as the coordinator and what does your office entails?

Undoubtedly, Gov. Seyi Makinde is one of the most loved politicians because of his outstanding style of governance. In respect of this unusual positive attitude of Nigeria politicians, led to why the movement was created by Hon. Victor Olojede(Special Assistant to the Governor on student affairs), I was elected as the coordinator amidst two opponents.

Since my emergence , we have had lots of engagement which includes vocational training of our member, hangout and victory dinner with his Excellency, Governor Seyi Makinde.

This movement equally contributed to the success of Gov. Seyi Makinde re-election via inter-hall campaign and election day canvassing.

Before the end of this year, we are looking towards hosting a massive leadership conference that will aid students unionism effectiveness.

A video of you was online recently where you were giving a speech in the presence of the Governor, what did you tell Mr. Governor?

That was at the victory dinner with the governor, I saw that day as the best moment to communicate the fear of the people towards the second term to him. Many people believe that he may stop being good after his re-election. I told the governor to keep threading the path of good character. He shouldn`t stop making the pensioners, Civil servants happy and also should ensure he keeps being the want of the students anytime any day. I was fulfilled telling him all that, I was so happy when the governor was clapping for me. It`s definitely going to stay in my head for long.

What is your happiest/saddest day  since you got to UI?

My happiest day was on the day I won my election as the general secretary of NUESA UI.

My saddest day was when I heard the news of Richards Gbadebo`s death(The UIte that died at Henkel Company during ASUU strike)

Its political season, What should UITES expect from you?

I have learn and unlearn concepts in leadership, So I believe its high time I should presidentially see to the welfare of educators.

What advice do you have for students especially fresher`s who want to walk the path of politics/leadership?

Our primary assignment in Ui is our academics. You can definitely discover another path because one of the importance of education is to make you understand your potential, but irrespective of the side hustling, political engagement or even social events, don`t ever toy with your parents interest which is your academics.

Give us your parting shot

In all you do, value your dignity and mental health.

“MAN, KNOW THYSELF”, A LIFE DETERMINING APHROISM FORMULAE

By: The Scribe

To the existence of every individual is the sense of purpose, meaning that man is a flow on earth for some specific reason which are surrounded by the life trails and its processes. By and large, it has been seen that most individuals to some varying degree are entirely off the line when it comes to being aware of their purpose for living. We should note that at birth, it is with the believe that all are destined to be of something special which have been embedded in the unique qualities deposited into each individual by the creator.

To what extent is the importance of realizing this fact? Imagine a certain individual living a life that constitute the absence of purpose, such can be said to be living a life of another. What we mean here is that to every living being, the most industrious aspect of our life that gift to it the path and will accustomed to such life is the realization of that will (purpose) which in turn guides the act of working towards the attaining of that purpose. When the reason for living is lost, the life is lost.

THE WHY

The clause, “Man, Know Thyself” is originally a context that means the drive and search along the origin line of man from ancient days. It tends to take its length to searching into what constitute the conscious process of a man from the mind to the soul. Here, we take it connotatively as a term that foregrounds the need to locate man’s reason for existence which cut across his purpose and manifestations on earth.

In a clearer sense, the image, purpose, God’s will for an individual and how such an individual see himself makes up who he is. We mean here that ‘Man, Know Thyself’ simply means ‘What Kind of Human Are You?’, we mean what have you been destined to fulfil in life? Anytime these questions are being asked and we can’t find a defining answer to it then, we say there’s a burning fire about to fully explode.

Knowing why you need to live a life of purpose is far more important than knowing how. If the reason to engage in something is not known, the zeal to engage in it remains dead. Living a life of purpose is a path to living a successful life. It enables man to make effective decisions, know his strength and weaknesses, set his goals, world view, philosophy and life morals. Also, man get to be consciously aware of his environment and know the best person to relate with in consideration of his dreams and specialties.

A GROWTH SIMULATOR

In a book written by John C. Maxwell titled ‘How Successful People Grow’, one of its chapters stipulated three kinds of people when it comes to having direction in life. The first category are the people who don’t know what they would like to do. This category of people are known to be the confused ones who take life as an avenue to come and live, eat and grow (in body structure), they see life as a bed of roses where there is no sense of direction to them. This kind of people don’t know themselves as much as they should which they later end up missing it in life.

The second category are people who know what they would like to do but don’t do it. Most times, this group of individuals are those who are not ready to pay the price for the prize. They are not ready to leave what they currently do (which seem so precious to them) for what they ought to do. They are afraid (to take risk) of the outcome and feel it will disturb them from what they currently get busy with.Failing to live a life of purpose is also not in exemption of this group.

Lastly on this note is the third category, they arepeople who know what they should do and are doing it. This kind of people are those who have taken their time to figure out the WHYS of their existence. They seem to be very distinct and different from the lots, they live a life of direction – a life that guides them to the treasure embedded in their palms right from their birth. To them, life is an avenue to make exploits and achieve their desires, they are passion filled, focused and live a destined life.

KNOW THYSELF PSYCHOLOGICALLY

In the words, world and books of the mind readers (Psychologist), they have varied the structure of various human character to various entities. They do this to enable man know his ways and the group he belongs to which as such guide the way he sees himself, expectations he places on himself, realizing his weakening and strengthen areas and also how he makes predictions on what’s expected of him. The most populous category is the Introvert vs Extrovert lane. This broad range is very much known to all as they are context that are of everyday word usage.

As popularly known, Introverts are individuals who loves being isolated to few closed ones. They enjoy a self-company or being in the closet of one or two close associates. Introverts can be shy when it comes to making friends or relating with people or say they also find it hard to lead a group of individuals. Studies has also shown that Introverts consume lots of time in making decisions as they are known to have a high pitch for in-depth reason inquiry.

For the other range, Extroverts are known to be individuals who are outgoing and outspoken. They tend to function well when they are in the surrounding of a wide range of people, they are known to understand and work to their strength when they work in groups. Extrovert not only make friends easily, they find it very easy to express themselves and take the lead. Most of them at this realization leverage it and become the mouth piece of a group of people.

Most importantly, no personality is right, wrong or better than another. The essence is to know the category you belong to and learn more on how to use it in developing yourself and the society around you. Everyone’s personality is a unique endowment that is rich in specialty, it teaches more on how to foster well when it comes to the decision-making process. The core of this is to know your category, filled yourself in it, understand it and know what you want, only through this can a purposeful life can be guaranteed.

ELEVATORS TO KNOWING THYSELF

Dear esteem readers, having realize the tenets of knowing thyself, it then warrants the need to lay hands on the elevators that guides you towards how to know thyself. The first step is to figure out your likes and dislikes. It enables you to know what you should move onto in life and what you need to move away from, it also gives you a shape of how you can describe yourself when asked the question: Who are you? Can we meet you? Introduce yourself, and so on

The second elevator is to figure out what constitute your strengths, weaknesses and challenges. It allows you to know what to focus more on in your life, also gives you the blueprint of what you are good at and where there are low endowments. Thirdly, you can ask others to tell of how they see you as a person, their views and talks about you will give you a sense of direction on whether to improve on it or find a way to turn things around.

Another one is to evaluate your environment and those around you, those you move with and where you reside goes a long way to determining your path in life. There arise some effects that tend to spur out from the influences where there is a high chance of it shadow-coloring an individual’s lifestyle. Think about things you do alone because they might be what you find pleasure in which can accumulate to your talents and destines.

Dear Fellow Readers, KNOW THYSELF.

BRAIN DRAIN COMMUNITY AND ITS CROSSOVER FESTIVAL TRIVIALS

By: The Scribe

According to Wikipedia, ‘Brain Drain from Nigeria, nicknamed Japa (meaning run or flee in Yoruba) is the exodus of middle-class and highly skilled Nigerians which has been occurring in waves since the late 1980s to early 1990s. This trend was initially restricted to certain profession but has now become free for all with the introduction of visa programs in order to fill workforce gaps in developed nations.’ This was sparked by an economic downturn which followed the discovery of oil wells in Nigeria.

In the world of Nigeria, it is widely written on its walls of how much daredevils the country has been swimming-in, it is also of a virtual reality and a matter of a strong faith to tell of when the country will be free from its evils and vices that has truncated the value drive aspired by her forerunners. It’s of a high history lane when matters of the country’s problem origin is been mentioned. Studies have even shown that it has been termed infinite and voluminous.

Out of these numerous problems faced by Nigeria is the talk of brain drain syndrome. In this scenario, intellectuals and well-trained practitioners in the country seek greener pasture in more developed country. As stated in the first paragraph, it has its history as far as 1980 during the economic downturn experienced. Ever since then, the story line has always round about having the best hands move out of the country and being of good use in another land.

THE AFFECTED ONES

Before the civilized context of japa slang, the range of brain drain syndrome pitched its tent in youths who tend to find means of making their lives better by moving out of the country. Most of them even get involve in series of activities (legal or illegal) as a route or medium to get their bags out of the country. Much later, the range advanced to intellectuals who tend to leverage their interest in getting their services rendered in a more advanced settlement that value their efforts in terms of wages and salary.

The field of intellectuals in this case fall within the bracket of the medical practitioners, say the health sector. They, at this, make themselves available to meet the needs of other advanced countries who are either short of medical hands or qualified practitioners. As of this light, it has then become a normal norm for this line of profession as they get to earn a wage that is thrice what they would have been paid in Nigeria. In addition, they also get to work in a safe and conducive environment with adequate up-to-date medical tools and equipment.

Recently, the syndrome has been far extended to the teaching profession. We have the caregivers moving out of the country to a modernized setting that offer to them the necessary needs for their wants and desires. Over the past few years, lecturers, high ranked professors, instructors and teachers have made their way out of the country. With the level of incessant strikes, poor working condition, lack of security for job and lives, poor remuneration has been a major determinant.

THE WHYS

Brain drain is accustomed to via a large number of effects which has been increasing the population of the affected ones. This has also in some sense encouraged others to see jetting out of the country as the surest medium. Talk on the advent of unemployment, unqualified or lack remuneration, time to time strike, poor salaries, poor working condition, high poverty rate, religious and communal crises, political crises andlack of quality education, the list is actually an endless one.

According to a study reported on Wikipedia, corrupt practices and bad leadership is another factor that has led to the brain drain. Failure to implement the right policies atthe right time has render some of the key sectors (Health and Education) useless. The poor funding of these sectors which has brought to it backwardness in administration and work delivery has let to the shocking uprising of skilled workers jetting out of the country.

In addition, the brain drain system has also extended its wings to the entertainment industry with the likes of Doris Simeon, Lara George, Lola Alao, OpeyemiAiyeola, BayoBankole, Regina Askia and some others migrated to other countries. Owing to some effects like pirating of movies, bad policy regulation, unstructured system, the entertainment industry is also a prey of the brain drain. If the country has been the best to their taste, there wouldn’t have been the need to take to their heels and take off the country.

THE EFFECTS

The percentage of the annual budget apportioned to the health sector has always been of a figure less than 5%. For a determining sector of health, this speaks volume to how bad the system is been run. The public health care situation of the country is not an encouraging situation as we have the presence of obsolete equipment and low number of qualified doctors.

In a 2017 survey carried out by Nigeria’s polling agency, NOI Polls, in conjunction with Nigerian Health Watch, it was found that most doctors seek opportunities abroad as 88% of doctors were considering work opportunities abroad. On average, 12 doctors a week move to UK. It was also recorded that Nigeria has lost more than $2bn since 2010 to training doctors who later migrate.

The spoils of Nigeria have been the gains of these developed countries.  Countries like United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, Saudi Arabia and south Africa has been at the positive end of brain drain system. Countries such as UK has 10% of African countries medical doctors working under its system which has thus save the UK $2.7bn by recruiting these doctors.

Another shocking statistics of Wikipedia revealed that Nigerians spend about ₦359.2billion annually while seeking health care abroad, this surprisingly is another brain drain syndrome which has a long run effect on the nation’s economy. Theses are only figures of the heath sector, how much do we want to imagine the effect this has had on other affected sectors. A country blessed with rivers of talents but attacked by several negatives working against her good will.

THE WAY OUT

Even though it is said to be justified enough when the whys of Nigerians who have cross over is being accessed, still that does not also mandate the fact that it should be encouraged. Lots of debates has surround the proposed bill at the Senate level which seeks to mandate a compulsory 5 years service on graduating medical professions before they are being certified of their profession. Although the bill’s goal is to reduce the brain drain effect yet it speaks harshness.

Not leaving out the education sector, graduates are now having their eyes on the trend to further their professional studies in a well-advanced country. Those who have the financial capability to fly off do so while those who wish to but has no means have no choice than to lay low and face the reality. The line yet still hold the record that about 95% of these population will flee if given the choice and resources.

Policy  that address these challenges should be implemented. At the mention of policy, we mean financial funding of these parastatals so that they can function appropriately to their potential level. There should be provision of quality infrastructures that befits the required system. Check should be placed on ensuring the available equipment are not obsolete and also meet the required standard of purpose.

Series of motivation should be made available for workers which in turn serve as a positive reinforcement to them as it enable them to give their all and stay happy at what they engage in.If to the resources embedded in this country are used to the level that satisfies it utilization, Nigeria will be on the banks of her foretold aspirations.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND THE FACED STUMBLING BLOCKS

By: Seilat Olaide

Education is essential towards a good and promising life. To fulfill most good desires surrounding being successful, one must be informed and stay connected as such with wide knowledge. Education aims to instill human with knowledge, culture, value, norms and migrate them from an ignorant condition to a civilized form. Education has changed a lot of human life, ranging from their physical ability to mental process of decision making.

A good theoretical knowledge is essential for every human to function well in the practical aspect of life as education aim to build us with theoretical knowledge which stands as foundation towards a practical life. A good grade is essential as it’s in some way a measure towards a successful career (though not every time). Thus, necessary attention should be geared towards focusing energy on how to move around a good grade as a student.

As stated earlier, having good grades might not be a 100% guarantee for a successful after life school, such still does not rubbish the importance of possessing good grades. But, even with the prior knowledge known to all students that a good grade is important towards getting a better life, it is widely known now that the context has changed. There are still multiples of students’ failure in academics which are caused by some major factors which include the following:

One of the major factors that causes students’ failure can be found in some external factor which perhaps kills the burning desire to earn a good grade for students are faced with multiple issues in their environment. Schools are not just built but they are to be facilitated with necessary infrastructures that promote easy access to materials and conducive environment (good light, water, air condition, easy access to library) which makes learning friendly. Imagine a case whereby the school is poorly funded and necessary infrastructures are not put in place, this can then lead to frustration and eventually the failure of many students.

Personal factors are also a stumbling block when it comes academic excellence, there are human thought and reasoning which are not healthy for human prospects. These challenges could be from lack of inspiration, losing one’s self esteem, frustration, discouragement coming from economic status or lack of love shown from family, this negatively affect students reasoning therefore prone them into the journey of dwelling in theirownnegative thought rather than finding a solution to prevent its damages spreading over their major life aspects. This personal factor has huge effect on students’ academic performanceand if left unchecked, it can aggravate to the level of being destabilized in life.

One of the major reason humans want to stay informed apart from moving away from ignorance is to be stable economically, financially, and to retain integrity in the society. Many students could have gotten their balance in other aspects that makes up excellence, whereas they are lagging in the financial aspect which make then revert into struggling for the acquisition of a means of survival and their academic funding.

This imbalance between getting themselves upright financially and trying to cope academically at same time is enough to serve as a stumbling block to their path towards academic excellence. These can also range to frustration causing majority to opt out as a result of inability to cope with the burden. The financial aspect of a student must be balance and sufficient to gain the necessary good grades they have want.

Above are the most common reason responsible for students’ failure and in order to prevent failure or further damages necessary observation should be made by student to know the root of the cause. Knowing the origin of the cause is a half good news but not yet a complete one than going in search of the solution. The fantasy of being honoured with academic distinction can only be actualized if the mission, inspirations and motivations which serve as a drive to attaining the grades are retained.

WHAT NEXT AFTER GRADUATION?

Dear Finalist,

If you can answer the title finalist that means you must have spent couple of years on the UI campus, irrespective of your course of study, four, five or six year course, the most beautiful thing now is that you are a finalist.

If you look back, you will see how time flies. You will see how much you have had to overcome, impromptu tests, skipped meals, crash reading, Till day breaks (TDBs), Morning till Night (MTNs) e.t.c

You might not have bargained to spend this so much years on the campus of Ui but due to some reasons such as incessant strike, pandemic e.t.c  You are still here as an undergraduate, all what you say now is I JUST WANT TO GRADUATE.

The pressure of completing your project before deadline couple with attending classes and other must attend events.

Irrespective of what your grade looks like or will look like on the day of graduation, you have come far and done a great job. After all, an A-4 sized certificate doesn`t directly reflect how intelligent and smart you are.

However, what are your plans after graduation? What next after graduation? Are you set to join the thousands of people who are out there searching for a job?

Don`t be a CONFUSED GRADUATE.

Why do people go to school?

To learn? To get exposure? To network? To find realize potentials? To make impacts? Primarily, people go to school to get a skill that can put food on the table. It means Education is a means to an end, not an end itself.

A great philosopher said, If you start a business today, soon you will become employer of labour. The journey might not be smooth but you will surely have a path to thread.

Dear finalists, the skills you have acquired in the couple of years you have stayed on UI campus , if you combine it with the exposure that the school has offered you, you can surely thrive.

Do not be scared of starting up, start small, do not give up on personal development, in all you do ensure you are not a confused graduate.

In conclusion, few weeks to now your journey as undergraduate in UI will end, what will you be proud of? What can the society benefits from you after graduation? Indeed time flies but what next after graduation?

EQUALITY?

Out there I walk, in name of struggle,

While you kiss your pillow to a sleep.

Roofless, in cold, yearning for shelter,

While your inn keeps your body warm.

Thrown off by unreal infinite thoughts,

Your own calms as though it’s newborn.

I exchange my sweat n’ blood for meal,

You sit, wish and command to thy table.

A long wait for me to view the full light,

And it’s a view you have tagged as norm.

Who then says equality will ever prevail?

That we may think we live in the same world?

We race with different oil, yet we must win?

Equality; just a new word for impossibility!

MEET OUR MENTOR OF THE WEEK

MENTOR OF THE WEEK: COLOUR SPLASH

By: Temitayo OJEDIRAN(Herald)

Can we meet you?

My name is Precious Oluwakayode, 300l student of Arts and Social Sciences Education(CLA option) I`m into graphics design and Ankara dealings.

Do you do this two things being a student or just a side hustle?

I am the Creative Executive Officerof Colour Splash (CSAD World). Basically, its not a side hustle, it’s a business and I am into it fully.

How has it been combining business with Academics?

I have to say, it has not been easy. But when something is your passion you just see your see doing it even with the school workload.

When did you start your business?

Before UI,  I never knew business was going to be my thing although I have always been a business oriented person. Before Colour Splash, I had once venture into something which was the selling of snacks although this was just a side hustle.

The idea of Colour Splash started like 2020 or thereabout during COVID but I started it fully in 2021.

What inspires you to start a graphics design and Ankara business?

I love beautiful colours, the right combination of colours.

What are the challenges that you have faced so far?

My first challenge is my parent because they believe as student, doing two things together. HOW TO MAKE HEALTHIER FOOD CHOICES

By: Seilat Olaide

The survival of human is mainly based on the source of food intake, man devote himself towards attaining his survival which is guaranteed base on his hard work, it is something to select a food and it is another thing to select a healthy food which will bring about balanced state of the health. Healthy food stimulates fighting diseases and strengthening the immune system.

In the state of economic devastation, man reverse to the lane of survival by consuming any available meal to promote his existence, the aftermath of this has proven more provocative result than the survival line. The unwise selection of food probably from being economical thus gives birth to what calls for a more healthcare attention. This informs the need to be attentive in food selection despite a downturn economy that proves to prevent a more detrimental issue resulting into death shortcut.

The notion of whether health is wealth or vice versa has surpassed most debate topics coming to the edge that it has been widely considered. A good health give birth to a flourishing wealth and the wealth in turn serves as the maintaining agent of the health. A nutrient filled food could be hard to be selected if necessary findings are not put in place. Food with low nutrient like doughnut push a lot of glucose into the bloodstream the pancreas responds by releasing insulin.

However, when the sugar level is low one, it will be left drained of energy, this food is high in calories which result to energetic state but lack any form of nutrient that build the body due to its shortcut towards energy giving level. It is a natural instinct to consume more sugary meals and time saving food in deception of it building the health. Foods rich in nutrient includes beans and legumes, fruits, spices, herbs, nuts, seeds, addition of a nutrient filled food into food selection that will eventually results into balance diet.

Selection of food should be related to the ability to aim at food that promote and stimulate a good immune system. A good immune system prevents all sorts of diseases and infections which can break down the body system. Every human wants to stay healthy off any form of inconveniency that comes with diseases, infection, and other health related issue but when this desire is bound to some form of negligence displayed towards every necessary strategy to stay away from such diseases then it’s unrealistic that a sound immune system can be attained.

The choice of food can be widely done around meals filled with so many vitamins, recent research state that one should aim to eat 30 different foods and plant in a week to get the necessary nutrients which help the body fight off diseases. Cognitive behavior is a great process in life journey as it helps in rational, consistency and coherence thought adding meaning to life decision making and implementation. One of the prominent properties of the cognitive function is the brain which actively works with the amount of energy supplied from broken food in the body system.

There are some specific food especially those rich in amino acid that helps to reduce stress and anxiety associated with the cognitive process, this foods enable the brain to release some certain chemical like dopamine known as happy hormones, this serves as stress relieving chemical of the brain that comforts. Food that are wisely chosen in order to help build the brain will eventually promote a better life functioning that does not contradict norms and also help in boosting emotional intelligence and social intelligence.

Having knowledge of one’s bodily needs contribute a lot to a wise food selection as bodily craving for food could be to fill some lagging aspect of one’s health which are not unveiled till a medical attention is taken place. The body does not deceive and it has its way of direction to bring about awareness of one’s health state to achieve the balance it needed. Craving that moves around salty food gives awareness of being dehydrated which can throw electrolytes out of balance and result into shock, cravings around sweet food suggest one’s sugar level is low and to promote continuity of its balance, craving set in. Implication of this matched with the fact that adequate attention should be directed to the bodily cravings around foods.

Sometimes quantity can distract our mind from what quality really implies, rushing towards large number of food than a more nourished and most beneficial one is not uncommon among human being, this plays around a mental activity of being economical. Sometimes, the quantity has short life span or can promote a greater damage than the quality which seems little but carries a might, food chosen around its quality will prevail its beneficial properties in one’s physical looks and healthy state unlike the one chosen around its quantitative which gives more satisfaction but lack necessary nutrient that promote the healthy role as per wellbeing.

Food is a life sustenance which is essential to human living and existence, human live on food and water to grow and develop. A good growth and development should not be hung on nonchalant ability towards the nutrient necessary as a good meal will not only add to a good physical outlook but also flourish the health and prevent lots of unknown diseases. Many are more pleasing with a good health but a good health cannot be attained through a shortcut around nutritious meals but it can be attained by adhering to the above recommendations.

The Abuse of Naira Currency – A Prequel to the Cashless Policy Note Chaos

By: The Scribe

Safe to pull up the string which expresses a popular aphorism that surrounds the context of choice making – “To every choice lies an implication”. To anyone, this statement can be further stretched to make it clearer, thus, this piece shall also do the same along the lines. Actually, when it comes to making choices, be it individual or even at a collective point, it boils down to how these minds can put into reasoning and think aloud the impact of the choice they are pledging-to in relation to the future.

We must be factual that the future nowadays is not even far fetched anymore, the future can be tomorrow, in a week’s time or say next month, the results of choices made comes faster most times. The essence of expressing how the decisions we make tends to design the future is to bring to light the power that such decision holds. In Nigeria’s plight, over the past few years, series of activities have been rendered amidst various households.

Here, decisions have been reached by organizations, heads of department, production bands, retailers as well as the consumers which has by large shape what they face off with in these present days. Take for a company that decides to run on underproduction, few days later, there will be a drop in its sales revenue owing to a drop in the quantity of goods produces some days back.

The current state of the country in aspect of the naira note redesigning has spurred quite various degree of reactions. While some believe it is an instrument or move to further unleash the last pain from the Buhari-Led Administration on Nigerians, other people believe it is rather a tactical political move to reduce the advent of democracy poisoning by political cabals such as vote buying, some set of Nigerians had even through series of frustration experiences say it is a right policy operating at a wrong timing.

The past two months has unarguably been the most stressing and painful period Nigeria has experienced under this administration owing to the naira note scarcity. Strolling back to Aug/Sept 2022 when the CBN (Central Bank of Nigeria) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, gave reasons behind the Naira redesigning with the major one being the fact that the CBN can no longer account for the total amount of naira in circulation which as such calls for a need to call back the 1000, ₦500 and ₦200 notes for a revamp, another reason is the notion of naira devaluation in foreign market.

The pains this will bring to the Nigeria society were not even modeled here as the entire country seems unconcerned, but here we are, now finding things turn the other way around where hunger and business run-down has been the other of the day. Is it then safe to say that the decision to redesign the naira note brought about the present distress and torment? Maybe its safe to ask what choices we have made in the past months or few years that has handed us the current negative returns.

Nigeria as a whole had made choices through various activities over the recent years, we’ve settled for some immediate scores without taking time to put to reasoning the resulting effects of these choices. These choices we made led to the advent of excessive money in circulation that brought about the naira redesigning. What are these decisions? How has it shaped the Nigeria economy? Could we have made better choices? Who is to blame for these choices? Are all Nigerians in this box? Answers to these questions shall be ditched out as this piece progresses.

When it comes to money in circulation, it gets to accumulate by a core concept which is inflation – this is when large amount of money are chasing fewer goods. Since year 2019, Nigeria has been experiencing an increase in year on year inflation rate. Year 2019 recorded a 11.40% inflation rate, it experienced consistent increase in 2020 – 13.25% and 2021 – 16.95%, then dropped to 15.6% in Jan, 2022 and then increased again to a whopping 21.82% in Jan, 2023. These figures depict that the Nigerian economy has being surrounded by the tenets of inflation over that past four years which has thus brought about a big blow to the nation’s economy.

Decisions of companies to produce less so as to increase price later on, choices made by individuals to hoard goods and sell it during scarcity to gain excess profit, the consistent rise of goods and services price without a drop when the cause of such increase has been eliminated, the zigzag high rise and less fall in the sales of fuel (petrol, kerosene and diesel), decision by some enemies of the country in keeping huge amount of money at their closet, all these and many more are choices made by Nigerians as a whole which has led the country to this present state.

Once inflation persists in a country, such economy is on the verge of paralyzing and the present of high flow of currency in circulation cannot be avoided. On a more general aspect that concerns every Nigeria is the choices made that have resulted to the devaluation of the naira currency. Individuals, business owners, organizations and the government have part to play in the decision made towards this destruction.

When inflation persists in an economy, it also results into devaluation of such currency where it tends to fall at the foreign exchange market. Naira rate exchange to dollar is now in range of ₦750 to ₦755, bringing about a flat bend of the currency against some other foreign or neighboring currencies. How did we find ourselves here? While some people keep pouring all the blames on the Nigeria government, they forget to realize that the inputs of each individual sums up to a national output.

Choice to go for foreign goods at the expense of domestic products (which is of huge rampant in the country), cyber-crime activities that has brought about the high influx of the dollar currency, the fall of crude oil per barrel price, embezzlement of public funds ranging to other financial corrupt practices and other activities has brought about the fall in the naira value.

These are choices we’ve made in one time or the other which has equated to the present yearnings. We have birthed in these decisions without having concern for what it tends to cause the future, we have also enjoyed the past at the expense of the present due to unreasoned choices and we all have spoils to milk from these.

Could we have made better choices? The context of deciding on a particular situation has to deal with putting into consideration the effect of such decision tomorrow, next week, the following month or say the next year. Once this practical thought is given consideration, the resulting picture of what the choice will bring about is enough to make a judge concerning the decision to take as per such choice. Choices made today are the architect of tomorrow. Our choices affect (either positively or negatively) ourselves, people around us, the society and the country as a whole. To every choice we make should be a guided one.

THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF KENNETH MELLANBY

By: FPO

Kenneth Mellanby was a prominent British zoologist and entomologist, known for his pioneering research on insect physiology and behavior. He was born in Newcastle upon Tyne, England in 1908 and died in 1993. Mellanby made significant contributions to the fields of zoology and entomology during his career, and his legacy continues to influence modern research in these fields.

One of Mellanby’s most significant contributions to science was his research on the behavior of insects. He studied the effects of hormones and other chemicals on insect behavior and physiology, and his work helped to shed light on the complex interactions between insects and their environment. His research also had important practical applications, including the development of insecticides and other pest control methods.

Mellanby was also a respected authority on the behavior and ecology of birds, and he wrote extensively on these topics throughout his career. His research on bird behavior and migration helped to advance our understanding of these complex phenomena and provided important insights into the ecological interactions between birds and their environment.

In addition to his scientific research, Mellanby was also a dedicated teacher and mentor to many young scientists. He served as a professor of zoology at the University of Sheffield from 1945 to 1968, and his students and colleagues remember him as a kind and inspiring mentor who was deeply committed to his work.

Today, Mellanby’s legacy continues to influence modern research in zoology, entomology, and related fields. His contributions to our understanding of insect behavior, bird ecology, and other topics have had a lasting impact on the scientific community, and his dedication to teaching and mentorship has inspired countless young scientists to pursue their own research careers.

Kenneth Mellanby’s impact in Nigeria was primarily through his work as a consultant to the Nigerian Government’s Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources in the early 1960s. At that time, Nigeria was experiencing a significant increase in agricultural productivity, but was also facing new challenges related to pest control and environmental conservation.

Mellanby’s expertise in entomology and pest control was highly valued by the Nigerian Government, and he was invited to visit the country in 1961 to provide advice and guidance on these issues. During his visit, Mellanby worked closely with Nigerian scientists and government officials to develop new strategies for controlling pests and improving agricultural productivity.

One of Mellanby’s most significant contributions to Nigeria was his work on the control of tsetse flies, which are a major pest in many parts of the country. Tsetse flies transmit a parasite that causes sleeping sickness in humans and livestock, and the control of these flies was essential for the development of sustainable agriculture in Nigeria. Mellanby’s research on tsetse fly ecology and behavior helped to inform the development of new pest control strategies that were effective in reducing tsetse fly populations and preventing the spread of sleeping sickness.

Mellanby’s work in Nigeria also had important implications for environmental conservation. He recognized the importance of preserving natural habitats and biodiversity, and he advocated for the use of integrated pest management strategies that were more sustainable and environmentally friendly than traditional pesticide-based approaches. His research on the ecology and behavior of insect pests helped to inform these strategies, and his work on environmental conservation in Nigeria helped to pave the way for future efforts to protect the country’s natural resources.

Kenneth Mellanby had a significant impact on the University of Ibadan in Nigeria during his tenure as Vice-Chancellor from 1955 to 1960. During this time, he implemented a number of important reforms and initiatives that helped to transform the university and set it on a path to becoming one of the leading academic institutions in Africa.

One of Mellanby’s most significant contributions to the University of Ibadan was his focus on academic excellence and research. He worked to attract top talent from around the world to the university, and he established new research programs and initiatives to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation. He also worked to strengthen the university’s ties with other academic institutions and organizations around the world, which helped to raise the profile of the university and attract new funding and resources.

Mellanby was also a strong advocate for diversity and inclusivity at the University of Ibadan. He worked to increase the number of female students and faculty members at the university, and he promoted a culture of tolerance and respect for different cultures and viewpoints. This helped to make the University of Ibadan a more welcoming and inclusive place for students and scholars from all backgrounds.

Another important contribution that Mellanby made to the University of Ibadan was his focus on community engagement and outreach. He recognized the importance of the university’s role in the broader community, and he worked to establish new partnerships and initiatives to promote social and economic development in the region. This included programs to improve healthcare, education, and agricultural productivity, which had a positive impact on the lives of people in the surrounding communities.

Overall, Kenneth Mellanby’s impact on the University of Ibadan was significant and far-reaching. His focus on academic excellence, diversity, and community engagement helped to transform the university and establish it as a leading academic institution in Africa. His legacy continues to be celebrated and recognized today, and he is remembered as one of the most important figures in the history of the University of Ibadan.

Prof. Adewuyi’s citation, which was read by the vice chancellor, was a packed one that featured the antecedents and some of his over the year achievements. The inaugural lecture, which happens to be the fifteenth from the department of economics, centered on the context of poverty as Nigeria is concerned compared to the rest of the world and why the country is still a slave to this dare devil.

Also, in contention was the impact of two key variables on Nigeria’s poverty; Politics of Economics and Economics of Politics. He made clear distinctions between the two and how they come to play in influencing the rate at which Nigeria can reduce its poverty percentage. In addition, he gave reasons embedded in the country having numerous economic downturn solutions at its disposal without implementation and tagged such scenario as Economics of Politics.

A wonderful example rendered by Prof. A. O. Adewuyi as to Politics of Economics is the recent new naira currency policy which was purposely implemented to reduce the rate of vote buying as regards the 2023 general elections. He concluded the inaugural lecture by rolling out recommendations and conclusions as to the observed problem.

CAN ALL HANDS BE ON DESK? A TALE OF A COLLECTIVE MOUTH PIECE

Have you ever witnessed a house composed of different kind of tongues speaking across various angle and reaching a consensus? Maybe you’ve been in a city where her citizens speak of numerous languages and still reach a solvable conclusion during such process? According to an editorial penned during the previous semester, it reads that “a house divided against itself cannot stand”, it thus enlarges its voices by stressing the need for cooperation across all arms which then foregrounds the context of unity.

The Arts and Social Sciences Education Department is known to be one of the most populated department not only in the faculty of education but in the entire campus. A department as populated as over 600 students goes a long way to tell the capacity such holds in terms of this variable. Somehow someway, it has been seen that this strength has not always been channeled rightly and used to its potential level when needed.

A major challenge faced by a populated group has always been the flexibility of division, though division can occur in any group irrespective of the population volume, but a group of a variably large populated is much more exposed to division than a less populated one. In such case, when there is a presence of this evil, it then becomes a war within trying to pull down the whole. It becomes unfortunate when a perceived and obvious strength becomes a disadvantage.

Arguably, many things are expected of the department when it comes to using its strength when the need arises. If the situation of previous like events has been encouraging, the picture of this piece would have been of a different direction. Here, the goal is to ensure the tale of the previous days are prevented and reprinted as of new and positive change. The power it holds should all rise in unity and attain a potential level as so expected.

It is of necessary to remind all that the Arts and Social Science department started off in 2016/2017 after the Teacher Education department got separated into three different departments (Early Childhood and Educational Foundations, Science and Technology, and Arts and Social Science). All of these departments have led the faculty except ASE. What we mean here is that since the foundation of the department, it is still yet to have a representative as the president of the faculty.

Connecting bits and figures together, the evident are clear to say the department’s 1+1has been far from equaling 2. What is the way out to making this simple equation provide the needed outcome? A collective participation should be erupted where everyone sees the need to contribute their quotas to ensuring the department is placed at the height it befits. Unity as of bond that hold strong must cut across all arms, sections and levels of the department, to have this sort of trend would be a foundation that stands the test of time.

Is there anything as strong as a unified team? Is there anything that is powerful enough to break a bond? Throughout my life, the only thing that I know can defeat unity is the disunity in unity.

Editors Note: This article is not campaign directed and also not one channeled to canvass for any, it is simply a piece with the sole aim of reminding the entire department as a whole on the need to remain unified which thus enhance the growth of such all-round. Words stated therein have been thoroughly and carefully chosen. As a press organization, we remain concerned about the success of the department and we believe with the strength the department holds, it is well capable of achieving the goals set before her feet.

MAINTAINING YOUR MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLBEING

By: FPO

For many university students, the college experience is one of the most exciting and transformative times of their lives. However, it can also be a time of immense stress and pressure that can negatively impact mental health. The transition from high school to university can be challenging as students navigate a new academic and social environment. This, coupled with increased academic demands, financial stress, and the pressure to succeed, can lead to mental health challenges.

The prevalence of mental health issues among university students has been on the rise in recent years. According to a report by the American Psychological Association, anxiety is the top presenting concern among college students, followed by depression and stress. The report also found that the demand for mental health services on campus has increased, with some universities struggling to keep up with the demand.

One of the main challenges facing university students is the stigma surrounding mental health. Despite growing awareness of mental health issues, there is still a significant amount of stigma surrounding mental illness, which can prevent students from seeking help. Many students feel ashamed or embarrassed about their struggles and may fear judgment from peers or faculty.

Another challenge is the lack of access to mental health resources on campus. Many universities have limited resources for mental health services, and those that do offer services may have long wait times or limited availability. This can be particularly challenging for students who require ongoing support for mental health conditions such as depression or anxiety.

Financial stress is also a significant challenge for many university students. The cost of tuition, housing, and other expenses can add up quickly, leading to financial stress and anxiety. Students who are struggling to make ends meet may find it challenging to prioritize their mental health and may be more likely to experience mental health issues.

Finally, the social pressures of university life can also contribute to mental health challenges. For many students, university is a time to explore new relationships and experiences, but this can also be a time of intense social pressure. Students may feel pressure to conform to social norms, engage in risky behaviors, or participate in activities that are not aligned with their values.

SOLUTIONS TO STUDENTS’ MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGES

University students face a variety of mental health challenges that can have a significant impact on their academic performance and overall well-being. While the challenges are complex, there are several solutions that universities can implement to support the mental health of their students.

● Increase Awareness and Reduce Stigma: One of the most important solutions to addressing mental health challenges for university students is to increase awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental illness. Universities can hold mental health awareness campaigns to educate students about mental health and provide resources for support. They can also offer training for faculty and staff to identify and respond to students in distress.

● Increase Access to Mental Health Services: Another important solution is to increase access to mental health services on campus. Universities can expand their mental health services to include more counselors and offer walk-in appointments. They can also offer online and teletherapy services for students who may not be able to attend in-person appointments.

● Offer Support Groups and Peer-to-Peer Support: Support groups and peer-to-peer support programs can provide students with a sense of community and connection, which can help them manage mental health challenges. Universities can offer support groups for students with similar experiences, such as anxiety or depression, and provide peer-to-peer support programs to help students connect with others who are going through similar challenges.

● Address Financial Stress: Financial stress is a significant challenge for many university students, and it can have a negative impact on their mental health. Universities can provide resources for financial planning and budgeting, as well as offer scholarships, grants, and other forms of financial assistance to students in need.

● Promote Self-Care and Resilience: Promoting self-care and resilience can also be an effective solution to mental health challenges for university students. Universities can offer workshops and resources on stress management, mindfulness, and other self-care practices. They can also provide resources to help students build resilience, such as counseling services and academic support.

● Create a Culture of Wellness: Finally, universities can work to create a culture of wellness that prioritizes mental health and well-being. They can promote healthy behaviors and habits, such as regular exercise and healthy eating, and provide resources for stress management and self-care. They can also work to address the social and cultural factors that can contribute to mental health challenges, such as discrimination and social pressure.

CCTV INSTALLED TO CURB AND DETECT CRIME

By: Temitayo OJEDIRAN

Recall that the University of Ibadan management has recently installed CCTV cameras to Halls of residence; these are some reactions from Uites

DANIEL 300l Arts & Social Sciences Education

I feel the use of CCTV is a great improvement to the institution as a whole but I just pity we squatters.

Toheeb Bolaji, 200l Sociology

Actually, this depends on where the CCTV are located inside the halls. If the CCTV are installed in the exterior part of the halls for security purposes, I think it is a good development but if it is to checkmate the behaviours of students living in the halls, I don`t think that`s good enough because I believe no one will be happy or comfortable if a CCTV is installed in their living room. Though this might curb some unruly behaviours from some students, but the facts is, it will surely affect the interpersonal relationship and communication among the students in the halls because most of them will want to put up artificial behaviour in different scenarios just because they know they are being monitored and I don`t think that will be a plus to the University at large because I believe we are here to learn , unlearn and relearn. I also believe we are rational humans who can act rationally and accordingly even without being monitored.

Anonymous

It`s not a bad idea. For years back we have been advocating for CCTV, cause an incident happened in my hall where someone stole, and then we were all like assuming there is CCTV the person would have been apprehended.

 Anonymous

It is not so cool cause I feel like it won`t really serve the purpose cause CCTV uses light and here in UI , light is not so good, how will they review when there is no light.

Anonymous

Since the CCTV cameras would be installed in public places like the general pathways, the common rooms and all then I`m fine with it.

THE ETHICS OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: BALANCING INNOVATION WITH RESPONSIBILITY

By: FPO

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing the way we live, work, and interact with each other. From virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa to self-driving cars and medical diagnosis systems, AI is increasingly becoming an integral part of our daily lives. While AI offers immense potential for innovation and progress, it also raises ethical concerns that must be addressed to ensure its responsible development and use.

The ethical challenges of AI are complex and multifaceted. One of the key concerns is bias in algorithms, which can result in discriminatory outcomes. For instance, AI systems used in recruitment and hiring processes can perpetuate gender or racial bias if the data used to train them is biased. Similarly, AI algorithms used in the criminal justice system can result in unjust outcomes if they are based on biased data.

Another ethical issue related to AI is privacy and data protection. As AI systems become more sophisticated, they require large amounts of data to function effectively. However, the collection, storage, and use of this data raise questions about privacy and data protection. In addition, there is a risk that AI systems can be used to manipulate people’s behavior, beliefs, and decisions based on the data they collect.

There are also concerns around accountability and transparency in AI systems. As AI becomes more autonomous, it can be challenging to understand how it makes decisions and who is responsible for its actions. This lack of transparency can be particularly problematic in areas such as healthcare and finance, where decisions made by AI systems can have significant consequences for people’s lives.

To address these ethical challenges, there is a need for a comprehensive framework that balances innovation with responsibility. This includes developing ethical standards for the development and use of AI, as well as ensuring that these standards are implemented and enforced. This can be done through a combination of government regulation, industry standards, and public awareness and education.

At the same time, it is important to recognize the potential benefits of AI and to promote its responsible development and use. AI has the potential to improve healthcare, increase efficiency in industries such as manufacturing and logistics, and enhance our understanding of complex scientific and social problems. By embracing the potential of AI while addressing its ethical challenges, we can create a future where innovation and responsibility go hand in hand.

EDUCATION AND THE IMMEDIATE SOCIETY: A COHORT OF DRIVE TOWARDS PEACE

By: The Scribe

Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise of progress, in every society, in every family “– Kofi Annan

In this contemporary world, series of events play out in our daily activities which defines the order of the day. Even through the basic needs of life which stands essential to what controls the state mind, there exists a unique element that offers high orderliness. Across the globe, the reigns of terrorism, religious conflicts, community threats, and economic imbalances serves as a disturbing barrier to this identity. This context is of essential in our immediate society and nation at large, the presence of it connotes the frequency that set the atmosphere on a reasonable balanced state. An element of needful to the society as PEACE is incomparable, to such therefore defines its significance.

As its importance has been clearly stated, it is thus unfortunate that its presence in the environment seems rare. Notably, it has now being a matter of paying, praying and fasting to get peace or even forcing to have its orders in our environs. Owing to the context that the entire world isn’t a safe place to be anymore, peace has now become an entity that its presence only occur in rare times. Negatives like death, diseases, hunger, unemployment, insecurity, poverty, inequality and unbalanced state of earth are of the driver that portrays the energy to pursue and make peace run far away. As much as it’s easy to make peace go absent, it is a matter of collective positive changes of efforts to bring back its presence.

Almost everyone wants peace, we all know what its presence does to the entire environment and the pleasures it commands. Looking at the structure of the world, one of the most powerful things in life is EDUCATION. It allows us to find the meaning behind everything and helps improve lives in a massive way. As education create the indulgence of intellectual knowledge, it is an instrument that will help understand the philosophy of peace which contains its importance and features, what to engage to possess it, dangers of not having it, and its drivers. As education seeks to shed light in the path of life, such light will be used to generate the illumination on peace.

One of the 17 Goals of Sustainable Development Goals is its Goal 4 which is ‘Access to Quality Education’. This goal aims to ‘ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.’ It further enlarges itself by providing 19 targets that tells of explains achieving inclusive education for all without discriminating and increasing the quality of education through recruiting qualified teachers, providing essential facilities and placing high shot on developing countries knowing they are at large lacking in the provision of quality education.

Moreover, a high percentage of deprivation to quality education are found in developing countries, mostly African countries, which has been a major reason there has been backwardness in the affairs of such countries. Also, lack of access to education in general creates inequality (also, income inequality) and poverty which breeds insecurity and this create the absence of peace. The connection that exceed between education and peace might not seem obvious enough in the short run, but at the long run of activities, it clearly shows that a major driver of peace is education – which has been termed by Nelson Mandela as “the most powerful weapon that can be used to change the world.”

Education thus gives us an understanding of the world around us and offers us opportunities to make use of such knowledge wisely (which include how to call and promote peace). Irrespective of race, breed and gender, education makes it possible for people to stand out as equal with all other persons from various walks of life. This then breaks the power of inequality and improves the strength of peace. Education is the platform that makes it possible to defeat all barriers. In this case, it has being seen as an instrument or tool to disband and correct barriers that seem threatening to the affairs and smooth running of a nation.

To achieve the presence of peace at the highest level, there is need to make provision for quality education. The government needs to ensure the annual budget is shaped to be of help in the execution of policies that will in turn improve the kinds of education given to young ones and ensure there is no discrimination during dissemination and implementation period. This connotes the stance of inclusive education where the special ones and regulars are equally attended to. Also, all members of the society must understand the fact that a deep connection exist between education and peace. If there is to be a peaceful society, the inhabitants need to be given quality education.

No benefit exists in a society that lacks peace, such is always featured with things that drives the nation to depression and thereby create the birth of aggressive citizens, an unbearable environment and selfless war. To avoid these, EDUCATION should be made available for all so as to build a needed environment for peace.

FROM THE BOOKS OF ADVISORY TO ASPIRANTS

By: The Scribe

To my dear fellow educators who have taken solace in setting forth their search for wisdom in this great citadel of learning, I drive my two-edged sword to. To the heart of ones who to a certain level of their self-esteem and actualization see themselves carrying the mantle of taking quality responsibility on their young shoulders, I send my comfort-rigor lines so it can give them a taste of the world they eye. To the other gang of minds who want a share of what being at the top feels like with a clear intuition of popularity and self-recognition, I say, listen, take your time and read along.

From my dearest corner, my gaze ushers the direction to capturing the first thing an individual aspiring for a position need to ask himself. The first thing is asking yourself how capable and ready you are concerning your ambitious post. Questions like, do I possess the necessary requirements or features to render this particular service to my fellow students? What is/are driving my ambition(s)? What are the things I feel I can do better than the current person holding such position? How well do I think I can produce positive results and deliver when all has been said and done? The level of providing sincere and confident answers to these defining questions will surely direct your step and increase your optimism.

In case you aren’t thinking along this angle, getting voted in calls for total commitment which means you have to work both day and night for the betterment of those you serve. Your cognitive process must be directed to the fulfillment of your duties, putting your manifesto to active work and exercising your constitutional duties. Also, the act of setting balance between academics and this role you aspire is another essential part to take note. Almost all your precious time will be spent in discharging your duties during the day (that’s if you are ready to be committed), there will be no room to bank on academics as an excuse for your incapability as you are well aware it’s going to be a great challenge making this combination.

The blueprint of activities surrounding your aspiring position is expected of your possessions. Meet the person who at present hold that seat and make measures about the essential things you need to know. You also get to know what his agenda were in line with those he has been able to execute so as to ensure a positive continuity to a large extent. Do not forget to identify the challenges such individual encountered and seek solutions to this in case you come across such later on (when elected). Seek for more wisdom by asking questions, equip your knowledge and understand the basis of the position you aspire.

Note that this activity isn’t a do or die affair and it is not a game of guarantee. The chances are based on 50-50 ratio. So, in your mind, always make it filled with the thought of you attaining the post or things going the opposite direction, this will prevent you from engaging in nasty things to win. Do not be devastated when things go wrong or when it fails to work your way, never let it affect other areas of your life, take things lightly and continue to place your academics as your top priority.

The posts of discharging duties are what you set your eyes upon, they are not arena to gain followers, popularity or fame. It is a stage where you are expected to deliver and carry out the plans you’ve outline to execute. But for now, I am in veil of what your thoughts are in relation to elections and how to make them (students) vote for you. But, my admonition to you is, do everything that seems moral and right, don’t force things to work, just allow things to make the transactions while you pursue your interest (with academics in mind) in the moral manner.

It is my responsibility to write, it is same for you to listen. I will be back on this in the next couple of weeks, till then, I give this a break.

NEED FOR ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY: THE FACE OF ‘FEEDBACK MEETING’

By: The Scribe

In the context of every government and organizational establishment lies the trade of checks and balances where one serves as a watch on another so as to ensure an all-round adequacy and competence. As a result of this, it (checks and balances) has been used over time because of the result it produces and how long it has proved to been a measuring rope that connects every parts and segments together in terms of internal assessment. The line is also extended to the press category who are bestowed the role of serving as watch dog which ranges from constructive criticisms, keeping tabs on daily activities, ensuring agendas are being fulfilled and showing the sense of their active presence which gives office holders the idea that they are being watched.

NEED FOR ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY

ASSESA as a body with various arm and section that makes it a whole is not left out in this custom, there live the act of checks and balances within the arms and also the press being as watch dog to ensure they are active as per duties and responsibilities. This brought about the notion in subjecting office holders to scrutiny which thus opens room for accountability of their engagements. For they’ve promised through their manifesto to be diligently serve the entire department and also represent the department well in their tasks and activities. Not only is it of necessary for the press to be aware but for the entire Assesa department being updatedon the present state of the association.

A section tagged “FEEDBACK MEETING” was introduced and organized by Assesa press where executives, legislators (Honorable members of the department in FLC), stakeholders, level representatives and press members were on ground to witness the state of the association to know what has been done, what they are working on and what is left to be done. It was also a section that includes the need for office holders to share any challenge they might be facing which handcuffs their performance. Therefore, in line with their manifestoes as promised, there is need to table their works into limelight so as to foreground accountability and transparency which will also put them on toes in their charge and commitment to their duties.

FEEDBACK MEETING

On a general and all-round note, executive members have shown alarming signs of experience deficiency as a very few percentage possess a foundational expertise in political office roles. But there is always a first for everything but being the first does not connote a bad start, there are room to prepare ahead and learn on the motion. Well, perhaps the administration story would have been more engaging if there were no Asuu strike and constitution amendment confusions which might have affectedthe administration in settling down for the business at hand. In all, there must be the realization that they’ve been charged to this duty and must at every time show the spirit of commitment in carting out their responsibilities.

During the section held at A313 on Friday, March 25th, 2023, the FLC (Faculty Legislative Council) department representatives and executives were subject to accountability where series of highs and lows emerged. In line withthis, the followings were realized.

FLC DEPARTMENT REPRESENTATIVES

Hon. Ogunmefun Samuel: By his presentation, he claimed not to have moved any motion as promised in his number 3 manifesto which reads “I shall move a motion that will benefit all Assesaites and the whole educators in general.”, he claimed the 4 sittings held by FLC were all on approval of budgets which has handicapped him from moving motions. As this didn’t present an encouraged representation, Hon. Ogumefun is advised to show more dedication and safeguard Assesaites interest as pronounced in his number 1 manifesto – “I shall represent and safeguard the interest of Assesaites in the council”, or else tagged as a figure head honourable.

Hon. Isaac Boluwatife: As an honourable member who was elected through by-election, his manifesto was in veil from press members and the entire department. Hon. Isaac Boluwatife, according to his words, is on the motion of sponsoring a bill that sets to be favourable to the entire faculty. Being the chairman of planning and budget committee at the FLC, he is expected to do much better knowing that it is Assesa first before anything and be in conscious that he is representing Assesaites whose interest is expected of him to have in his mind.

Rt. Hon. IjaiyaAderomola: Absent

EXECUTIVES

Ass. Gen. Secretary – (BuariOmolola):  Absent

Public Relations Officer – (AgunloyeAdejumobi): In accordance to her manifesto, she promised to promote the image of the department, support every entrepreneur in the department, share contents through the editorial board and work on uniting and ensuring active participation of all Assesaites. She has so far displayed act of responsibility in carrying out these duties online by keeping Assesaites updated and helping entrepreneur in publicizing and giving advice on the development of such business. As it is was seen that few numbers of Assesaites react to her online broadcast, engaging them physically will further help in reaching out and knowing the minds of Assesaites.

Also, there seem to be a loophole in the birthday shouts out as it was expected that it will be a graphical presentation and not just word content broadcast. It was seen that the lack of graphic designers who will be in position to sacrifice for the department is affecting this, in sense, there is need to be on look out for more hands that will help in aiding this and other events as it concerns the department. There were claims that Assesaites are in some way difficult to serve but as regards dealings with human beings, it is not always expected to be that easy. E-magazine and more physical interactions are expected from her office during the remaining weeks of the semester.

Social Director – (Adebisi Olatomiwa): The office of the social director is one where 70% of the activities is carried out towards the end of the semester as regards the department week, dinner and finalist week. So far, the office in line with constitutional duties and manifesto has been able to organize orientation and picnic for freshers. Currently, the office is working on organizing an excursion trip to three places in Abeokuta for interested Assesaites. Here, it was seen that the opinions of Assesaites was not reached before concluding on the said event which negates the contents of her number 2 manifesto which reads, “I would try and make sure that Assesaites have a say in the events and trips that we will organize”.

Also, the excursion broadcast is said to be lackinglexical details of the three places meant to be visited in Abeokuta. To ensure Assesaites respond and turn up for the event and subsequent ones of such, a survey should be carried out that will serve as a measure that gives a clear picture of what they want. A google form as such has been rolled out a day after the feedback meeting asking Assesaites their opinions on either excursion or a picnic. The social director when asked about preparations towards the end of the session events promised a well packed one and also used the medium to solicit to Assesaites in turning up for their dinner fee. It is as this expected of the Social director to be on look out for sponsorship which will aid in carrying out her financial duties.

Financial Secretary – (Alade Dorcas): Out of her fourplans, two are still left unattended where the two achieved (Availability and Financial Accountability) is expected of her as per constitutional duties. Partnership with banks and organizing seminars on savings and investment are yet to be carried out and are also weakening in terms offeasibility. All through the first semester till this moment, she is yet to make a move in partnering with banks for students in the department. When asked about when to expect it, she showed no sign of urgency.

On savings and investment seminar, this is also yet to be in place and arms are still crossed in expectant. The financial secretary is hereby advised and expected to show a positive sign towards the fulfilment of her promised agendas asfailure of such will amount to being of incompetence in a role she has been politically entrusted to. Also, this will amount to a record of failed promises as such will be heavily frown at through publications of how these plans meant to have been implementedsince first semester failed.

Treasurer – (AgoyeOluwafemi): As of this office, the plans stated according to the manifesto presented are the creation of online payment and receipt of dues, creation of a financial spreadsheet where daily activities of the department’s financial records shall be accounted for, procurement of scholarship and lastly the provision of feasible solution to the association’s financial treasury issues. It is to be agreed that the treasurer is yet to fulfill any of these plans, although the last plan is being hindered by NIN issues, change of account’s phone number and the ongoing cashless policy.

When asked of the failure in discharging the remaining plans, the treasurer claimed to have failed in carrying out these plans as some problems were encountered. It was found that the treasurer failed in carrying out a feasibility study during the process of writing the plans and as such became a failed project as per implementation. The press body will also place a watch on his office in order to ensure part of the plans which can still be carried out are implemented.

General Secretary –(Adetola Oluwatosin): In ensuring an open and accessible secretariat to Assesaites, the General Secretaryhas been discharging this constitutional duty alongside proper documentation of the administrative procedures. As of her number 2 manifesto – Organizing academic summit to foster student/lecturer and alumni intellectual interaction, the department are still in expectant of this and arms are crossed in expectant. According to her, it is expected to come to light towards the end of the semester.

Vice President – (Oshinyemi Promise): In line with her constitutional duties, she has been working together with the PRO in publicizing activities and events of the department (birthday shout outs, events, etc.). The vice president promised to create a suggestion box that will aid Assesaites in expressing their minds on department related issues. This failed as she claimed there is no place around the secretariat to place the suggestion box, as a result of this, she claimed to be working on a google form that will serve in place of the failed suggestion box creation.

In accordance to her number4c manifesto that centered on introducing a Year Book which shall be sponsored, the contents of such will be pictures of events that occurred during the course of the session. Also, under her office, she promised to deliver a well-presented Career day and trade fair during Assesa week.

President – (Adetoun Adepoju): On matters relating to tutorials, due to the vacancy of the post of Academic and Welfare Director, tutorials is said to be lacking as we’ve only experience one tutorial throughout the first semester. The president gave clarifications on the point that there was a late creation of the committee meant to take charge of the office. Part of the plans carried out through this office is the creation of a CGPA calculator and working together with other executives in ensuring a workable administration.

On statistics of students who has paid for dues, about 300+ out of 600+ has paid their dues while a figure as low as less than 30 has paid for dinner. This, according to the president, is due to the optional clause placed on the payment of shirt and dinner. The entire administration are as such charged to physically engage students, encourage them to make payment and also work towards organizing a well-deserved events which Assesaites will be pleased with.

ASSESA PRESS ORGANISES FEEDBACK MEETING FOR DEPARTMENTAL OFFICE HOLDERS

Next was the Treasurer, Agoye Oluwafemi lamented on how the recent famous bank issue “no cash” has been affecting the activities of the union and promised to work on getting better. The president of the association, Adepoju Adetoun spoke on things she has been able to achieve e.g CGPA calculator, participation  in sports, birthday shoutouts etc but she promised to fulfill her electoral promises. Unlike other executives, the Financial secretary, Alade Dorcas showed unprofessionalism as she took her promises to Assesaites for granted, She gave reasons why  she won’t be holding a seminar on savings and investment and also, her promise of partnering with banks is not seeming feasible. The General Secretary, Adetola Marvellous also stated her promises and the ones she has fulfilled and the ones she’s still working on. Finally the vice president Osinyemi Promise listed the promises in her manifesto and she stated the ones she has done and those she’s still working on.

UCJUI TRAINS CAMPUS JOURNALISTS ON SOLUTION JOURNALISM

By: Blessing OPEYEMI

The Union of Campus Journalists, University of Ibadan UCJUI  organized a training for  campus journalists on Solutions Journalism on Monday, 27th of March, 2023 to mark its first event of the 2023 induction week which took place at the Post Graduate lecture room, Communication Language Arts Department, Faculty of Arts.

The session which commenced at 2:30pm and was organised in collaboration with Nigeria Health Watch, a health communication and advocacy organisation, featured two facilitators: Mr. Chibuike Alagboso and Mr. Michael Atima and it had campus journalists in attendance.

The first  speaker, Mr. Chibuike Alagboso who gave a breakdown of what solutions journalism entails said a precise definition of the scope of Solutions Journalism which is ‘a rigorous evidence based report on responses to social problems’. This is pivotal to the general public notion that media houses are nowadays filled with unending reports on social problems and little reports on people or events providing solutions to these problems.

According to him, journalists need to go beyond the problems to report how people are solving and addressing societal problems. He stated further that Solutions journalism is worth doing because it promotes emotional well-being, improves the mental health of journalists and involves rigorous, evidence-based reporting on responses to social problems.

While Solutions Journalism is not hero worship, mere advocacy, theory, fluff but qualitative or quantitative solutions to problems, it empowers people to feel like they can do something about societal issues. Also, it helps their mental health.

According to a study in the UK by Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism in 2022 which was a survey of more than 93,000 people  across 46 counties, the top two reasons why people avoided the news were because the news affected their mood and secondly, it made them feel like there is nothing they can do. Solutions Journalism therefore is a  solution to these problems by shining light on the solutions to societal problems and also serving as a social boost to people’s attitude to societal ills.

Amidst other notable points, he explained the four pillars of Solutions journalism, which are response,  evidence,  insights,  and  limitations (of the response).

The second speaker, Mr. Michael Atima focused on the use of audio, particularly podcasts, as another effective way of practising solutions journalism while adhering to the four pillars.

This training for campus journalists is the first event on the line up of events for UCJUI’s induction week 2023 which would end with the induction ceremony that would be held at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan on  Saturday, April 1st, 2023.

TIME TO PARTY

It’s time to party, Yeah!

Every second semester of every academic session is an activities filled semester as various events are organized to lessen the tension of school work.

Various student organizations on campus also organize diverse events for their members.

Sometimes last semester, a group of students were having a chitchat, they all confessed how they can’t wait for second semester to be here as they want to really party hard. One of them claim she`s taking only five courses and thus she will have time for herself, one said she will attend all social events coming up on campus next semester.

Yes, the second semester is the sweetest semester in an academic session.

However, as sweet as the second semester is, it can also be bitter. Students have to jostle between devoting maximum time to academic and attending events. This may have effect on the academic performance if balancing is not done well.

Students are usually anxious to see the second semester . Second semester is usually known for more extracurricular activities, faculty, department, hall programs, and election here and there. Various weeks are celebrated and students are the ones expected to attend such programs. First semester has come and gone, second semester is here running already. For the peculiarity of this semester, students need to be wise and must be ready to balance this short semester, academics and events.

To the latest students, experience has been garnered on how life is being lived on campus, it’s time for self-reflection to know what to do and what not to do. Do not allow yourself to be used as a tool for electioneering at the expense of the main goal in the great citadel of learning.

To stalites, it is not unhidden on what entails second semester, the transient nature of the semester is well known, let the proper academic work start with full force now and not wait till weeks to examination.

Finalists are working even when others are on mini break, you are almost at the end of the tunnel, let the vibe be increased.

To conclude, this semester is left with about seven weeks, do not be cut unfresh.

MEET OUR MENTOR OF THE WEEK (ADELEKE TAIWO MOTUNRAYO)– PUBLIC SPEAKER

By: Temitayo OJEDIRAN(Herald)

Can we meet you?

Hi, my name is Adeleke Taiwo Motunrayo. I’m a final year student of the department of Counseling and Human Development Studies. I’m a public speaker, I’m currently the director of speech and training of the Education Literary and Debating Society. I own a Fashion brand named June Line and I’m a storyteller.

What really makes Taiwo different? Obviously, you are an outstanding personality, tell us the special things about you.

Well, I believe anything is possible. I’m a dreamer and I believe I can achieve anything I dream. I also put in the hardwork to make the dreams work and then there’s God, never letting me down. I hope I have been able to answer your question.

Taiwo and public speaking?

Tell us about the journey so far?

I’ll say that I enjoyed the graciousness of people who trusted me even when they hadn’t particularly heard me speak. If these guys hadn’t believed in me and worked to train me, there would not be an ‘Adeleke Taiwo’ in UI public speaking today.

Of course, I desired to be a stellar public speaker and I put in the work. I took every opportunity I had to represent my department or faculty during 100 level and 200 level and it paid off. The exposure I got from the competitions made me better and I’m grateful for it. I have winnings in my name because of all these and it’s something I’m always glad about.

How are you able to combine public speaking and Academics together?

Honestly, it can be very overwhelming, however, I believe if your heart is in something, you’ll find the time for it. I’ve bunked classes for competitions before but I always make sure I get the notes and explanations from my colleagues. Sometimes I’m writing a speech and it takes so much time and I have to rush through assignments at the last minute but I always ensure that my school work don’t suffer. Whatever extra time I spend on speech writing and ELDS affairs, I try to do extra with my school work too. We cannot but make sacrifices here and there for the things you love.

Most Uites can not forget one of speeches in Jaw war, Loading, Loading…

Can you say something about it, what were you trying to achieve?

That speech was borne in naivety, I just wanted us to win but I didn’t even know how to write a proper debate speech yet. The ‘loading’ part wasn’t initially the structure of the speech. It was just in a  paragraph where it was shabbily constructed. Our speech coach at the time saw it and told me to work on that paragraph and make it better. I kept rewriting it but he wasn’t particularly pleased with it. In one of those meetings, he told me to make that paragraph the structure of the speech and gave me a template. I worked on it but he and other members of the ELDS kept telling me to work on it so it can get better. So a tweak here, and a tweak there, that speech was borne. A lot of hardwork went into the speech and I’m proud of the success I was able to achieve with it.

Tell us your happiest day in UI and the other way round.

My saddest moment would be when Jaw War Semifinals 2018. Also, when we lost the finals of Black History debate sometime in 2018 or 2019.

My happiest (read as proudest) was when i finished delivering the ‘loading’ speech and the whole crowd gave me this deafeaning applause. It felt so unreal and gave me goosebumps

What should Educators expect in this Year’s jaw war as Faculty of Education has been paired with Faculty of Agriculture?

We always bring our A-game to competitions. Educators should be assured that our victory will be a delight to watch on that day.

Tell us briefly about other things you do, your brand and the story telling part.

With my brand June Line, I make and design clothes for women who choose to be fashionable. I’m also a fashion stylist.

For the story telling part, I wouldn’t want to give details for now.

What advice will you give to Freshers, as they are  new and they may want to explore for the realization of their potentials?

Dream high. Take risks. Acquire skills. If you have a valid dream, don’t take ‘no’ for an answer until you get there.

Give us your parting shot.

Don’t be afraid of taking risks. Don’t be afraid of starting again. Embrace Change. Introspect; find yourself. Be a good person. Enjoy life in the little things.

Thank you so much.

You’re welcome.

Where we then sacrifice the right.

Time the golden rule is of no reference.

Where bad stands as a normal norm.

Period deprived of tranquility.

When we live as that we are endless,

NEW NAIRA: DESIGN OR IMPLEMENTATION? WHERE SHOULD WE GAZE AT?

By: The Scribe

As previously signed and implemented by the federal government through the Central Bank of Nigeria (C.B.N) channel to roll out new set of ₦200, ₦500, and ₦1000 notes for the said purpose of logistics and to bring a change to the present epileptic state of the nations’ economic system. The new naira notes were set on motion on December 15, 2022 which has since then witnessed various comments and critiques from the Nigeria populace. To the redesigning of these naira notes came with purpose and objectives where such needs to be monitored and place a check list on which can serve as a tracker that tracks their implementations.

Should we drag our attention and educate each other on what comes with the redesigning of new currency notes? It must be necessarily noted that the move to effect a change in currency notes doesn’t just spur out of the willingness and feeling to just host such change, it comes with some targeted change of policies, expansionary or contractionary measures as matters of the flow of money in the circulation is concerned. Naira note are not in most times changed from the aura bending on reasons to reshape its colour and make it more colourful or attractive.

What should be the quality of every currency if not value that arises from how fair it is when compared to currencies of neighboring and international trade countries. At the consideration of the style and fashion of a currency note comes with the need to always essentially place the consideration of its value above such taste. Or, what is to say of the usefulness or value of a currency note that is so styled to a face appealing mode and fails to replicate such state in the aspect of positively fairing against other countries currency.

Also, to set direction and gather the flow of our minds on this article, there is need to stress that due to the advent and the emergence of the new naira notes, it has been of notice that most citizens of the country have somehow pecked their bench to the corner side of criticizing the look and colour features of the new naira notes. To this, our gaze is seen to have shifted from the most important aspect, which surely is the goal that birthed this movement (of redesigning) to the near least on the ladder as relating to our concern on this move.

Hence, the writer of this article isn’t penning this out of the well of pitching the objectives of the redesigning polices and weighing them if they are feasible or will be achieved. The concern of this write up is therefore to point out the most essential aspect of this policy, make us see where to focus on as against where we’ve been focusing on and help us to reshape our minds in monitoring the effects and changes the new currency have been challenged to bring forth. Out of this we will then be a positive member of the society and help effect the necessary change that best suit the society.

In advanced and developed countries, there is hardly obvious difference between their old notes and new notes, this is to stress that the objective of the reshaping is not to add more beauty to the currency but rather to add beauty to the nation’s economy and reshape the unwanted economic activity to a more favorable one.  And over the range of their years of operation based on this, it has been a positive one in this aspect, the shape and characteristics of their currency internally and externally has even been a major measure that has brought and kept these countries on the developed countries ladder. In this light, currency has been seen as a key indicator of development that structure the economic activity and its participations.

As a matter of essence, it is pertinent to say that we should endeavor and be careful not to misplace priorities when it comes to matters, most especially once that deal with societal ranges. Along the line and bearings of the new naira order, the necessity of highlighting the performance of this new note and how it then shapes the economy is of our priority and in the process of this will we then know if it is achieving its essence and objectives or that it has deviated.

ATTITUDE TOWARDS ACADEMICS IN SECOND SEMESTER

By: SeilatOlaide

Second semester is the second section of an academic calendar which includes varieties of activities and events, in contrary to the first semester where academics is paired with number of twin events as of social activities and sports within the campus. Along the line, students could be found around shouting engrossed with overwhelming happiness welcoming the second semester because of its glorious even its which lightens up the entire atmosphere of the semester.

Some of those activities are ones organized by various units within the school, the student union engaged in organizing events for the students and the student aren’t enemy of these auras to not see and feel the charming and exciting events put into place by student leaders. Also, various faculties embracing their faculty week filled with educational, trade, and social arrangements, the department is not left in this register out as they also organize their week, where intellectual and social activities are promoted.

TLDS (The Literary and Debating Society) won’t put on a zip mouth in failing to organize debate competition among different faculties and halls of residence within the campus and its environs. The press, on its own end, would arise to have their long awaiting week of press night towards the election day which must have been preceded by screening of aspirants, campaign range of days, press night as well as manifesto night, these are some of those activities second semester has always been offering and will also not fail to offer asides from the academic activities.

However, it could be wondered on how the students’ attitude would be towards academics in this semester, imagine a whole semester with serious academic engagement with no social activities followed by one enveloped with unlimited social activities. Some students are however profound in the lurking aspect of it by overshadowing the sense of chasing the primary objective, this could be unintended till the conscious state of the primary reason wiggle at the mind. Such attitudes will be stressed out as these lines proceed.

The students see the second semester as the time to ease the optimal stress the first semester has injected in them, a mindset of enjoying the second semester might fly around after a whole semester of having large number of courses being conquered or dejected. The advent of this further instill the desire of students to take total advantage of the social activities thereby placing their academics at a later time.

Academics work load in the second semester tends to submerged itself and get such load reduced, this gives this mentality of stylishly belittling its heaviness in a disguise of the number of courses to offer. However, students see this as a minimal work to do by placing the social activities over academic activities, thereby, at the near end of the semester when examination is winking at the nearer side, these few courses would have pile to a bulky state or unease state.Contemplations and anxiety strolls in surrounding how to cover up and also surviving their academics CGPAwhere they engage in all night (TDB – Till Day Break) or day (MTN – Morning Till Night)study.

Attractiveness and basically variety of the events in the second semester has raptured the mind of most students in leaving them lost and placing them on the scale of little concern on what academicslooks like. You tend to see range of students procrastinating after taking their books because ‘Irepo’ (who is a friend) is going for cultural night, they feel the interest to engage in these activities even at the detriment of losing their precious time for something less precious.

To these are the attitudes most students put on towards academics during the course of second semester which further spell out why students’ grades reduced a lot as regards second semester.

FACULTY TOILET: IMPROPER DISPOSAL OF SANITARY TOWELS AND EFFECTS

By: Josephine Awomodu

Educators have been complaining about the toilets being locked for a while and not available to meet their pressing needs. This inconvenience has affected a lot of educators so much that an educator who was reportedly ailing and needed to use the restroom in haste had to be rushed to another faculty to ease herself because the toilet in the faculty was inaccessible.

After several complaints to the executives and the body in charge of the toilet, educators were made to understand that the closure of the toilet was due to the improper disposal of sanitary towels in the toilet that had blocked the toilet. In lieu of this, this article is an enlightenment of the effects of improper disposal of sanitary towels.

Sanitation systems were designed for the purpose of with urine and excreta passage which must have shaped the circumference and breath of the pipes, hence, they can’t cope with menstrual materials. Menstruation materials will therefore clog the sewer pipelines as they are unable to pass through and cause the system backflow, if flushed down the toilet.

Pads and tampons, when flushed in the toilets, get saturated with liquid and swell up, this also results in sewage backflow, which is a serious health hazard. The adhesive wings and the perforated plastic layers of the commercial sanitary napkins are not easily biodegradable. The sewage blockages, mostly due to accumulation of excessive quantities of solid waste or sand, will result in hardening of the sludge in the pits.

Blockage of sewage systems is a global problem and a major contributing factor is flushing of menstrual products in toilets. The deodorized sanitary products used by women and girls contain chemicals used in bleaching such as organochlorines. When these deodorized sanitary products are buried in the soil, they’ll disturb the soil microflora and decomposition will take time.

It was discovered that some people who live alongside river banks throw menstrual waste into water bodies which contaminate them. These materials, soaked with blood, breed places for germs and pathogenic microbes. Sanitary products soaked with blood of an infected woman or girl may contain hepatitis and HIV viruses which retain their infectivity in soil and live up to six months in soil.

As for the clogged drainage with napkins, it has to be unblocked and cleaned manually by conservancy workers with their bare hands without proper protection and tools. This exposes the workers to harmful chemicals and pathogens. For a safer disposal and to avoid blockage next time, simply wrap your towel in a nylon or paper and put it in a bin.

Incineration is a better technique to dispose of menstrual waste, however, burning of pads releases harmful gases that affect health and environment. Burning of inorganic material at low temperature releases dioxins which are toxic and carcinogenic in nature.

COPING ALONG THE LINE WITH THE FORTHCOMING EXAMINATION

By: SeilatOlaide

It is no longer news to most University of Ibadan students that the first semester examination will be starting on 9th January 2023, this induce a lot of feelings ranging from anxiety to fear of what the examination and its outcome would look like. The coming examination will bethe first of it to be taken by new students (100lv) of the university and this tends to trigger a lot of reaction and action in them thereby pushing them into reading at the expenses of their health and other various things. To this is why it’s very important to understand how to cope with during examination as freshers in order to perform excellently well so ss to merge with flying colours.

Examination is a mean of testing and asserting if learning has truly taken place, there is definitely no point of learning when it can’t be applied and put to practical, to show howfervently one has learnt a particular discipline there must be thorough practice of such discipline. This implies that what has been taught should be well learntand question could come on how to study for an exam. The best way to study is to stay in a well-organized and neat environment which can stimulate a lot of information and get accommodated by sense of the mind, an organize place will therefore stir the desire to learn as well as a conducive environment

After a conducive environment has been chosen, it’s important to note that necessary materials to be studied should be related to what one has been taught. In search of a better material, to have an explanatory note is the best but this shouldn’t cause a deviation  from the major content given in the class room as this could reduce one’s grading with a hung thought of performing excellently well, addition of points outside a given note should come after knowledge on the wants of the lecturer as some require a full note within what has been given in class while others may prefer an addition to what has been given.

As a fresher in a university, it is of nature to be curious about how to make good grades. As it’s a new stage of migration from the high school level and not all will know there are some adjustments at the tertiary level which is so much different from the high school, the university level requires a more comprehensive knowledge on facts than in the high school. It should be known that one’s knowledge about a discipline just be broad and broadly written if the course requires it, this helps to perform so well and the essay form writing style will be well appreciated.

One can’t cope with an examination by jeopardizing or neglecting one’s health, in the process of preparing for an examination it must be noted that the health status shouldn’t be taken with levity, therefore it then should be provided with that adequate rest, nutrition food and fruits, and regular exercise will stimulate the brain muscle enhancing easy assimilation. Since examination can’t be done by someone who can barely raise his or her hands, this shows to attend to an exam one has to be physically, socially, mentally, financially and emotionally fit which will in turn give a higher chance of a good performance.

It should also be noted that examination period is a different period in the process of being a student because this will give the result of the months of staying in the school. To portray a good result, one has to work for it. The preparation doesn’t start few days to the examination but the preparation starts as of now with appropriate guidelines to prevent an imbalance state of the body and mind which will affect the performance.

THE ADVENTURE OF FIRST SEMESTER AND ITS GIFTTINGS

By: The Scribe

At the bank of the return from stagnancy that lasted for close to 8 months, we were at first greeted with the oils and waters of having to get used to academic process and its environments. This was a feeling that came in a form of a woman that experienced her first birth, it was all new to the core that having to recall the experience proves strenuous as of extracting an oil from a water. Being a semester that has been fashioned by series of trails, uncertainties, breaks and rebuilding of academic energies, it as well came with its gifts which all enjoyed on a state of relativity. As we approach the deadly timeline of the semester, here, we try to check on the positives and negatives of the semester as well as how it has shaped every student.

In light of the return from the long strike to the academic camp, there were strides in a battle of getting balance and reshaping all to a form of old times. Times of this were like forcing a horse to a river bank which will only be of a forceful move, to this effect, it has been directed to the advent of brains getting off the mark which resulted in the very slow start to the semester. To this recollection submerged almost 3-4 weeks of booting and restarting the energy vehicle and tapping into the order of the natural body as per the used to (then new) present stound.

Even through the expense of this, it again proved to be a very special semester as the number of weeks that later emerge to being of useful was very much shortened. It is of course a negative on the part of both students and lecturers in that before the strike action, through the two weeks expended then, nothing was covered and after the strike suspension, about 3 extra weeks were used to get all systems back on track thereby summing the wasted weeks to 5 weeks. The implication of this is what everyone has been witnessing for the past 2-3 weeks as all shades of courses have been coming in full force from all ends.

The strand seems to be of a one that almost all lecturers wanted to be done with their course before next week since the week that follows is a new year week and the one after sums the emergence of the first semester examination. Students have been put on a motion to manipulate and face all courses all at once. In this have we seen the smash of test after test, assignments and project work strolling in all in the name of continuous assessment continuation and different projects and group work. The form has been shaped in a style that the adaptation and effect of this on students wasn’t put into any measure of consideration as almost all (lecturers) are all at the target to get it all done with regardless of how it is being carried out.

To the mention of the above will take us back to the drama that unfold concerning the half salary payment to lecturers in the month of October and the fact that the withheld salary of 7 months is yet to be paid. We won’t be anyway totally wrong to say the hard forth and the shape of the semester has been designed in such a way of this as lecturers were not 100% dedicated to their lecturing activities after the event of half salary payment. Their attitudes towards lecturing became questionable and it was understandable to some extent.

The fact that the bulk of the negatives of all will always fall on the head of students gives the impression that the sides of students are not always put into consideration in matters that concern them. That the negatives of tussles that occur in the academic world is made to lie at the camp of the student world is something unjust and needs to be considered as an externality. In a situation where the students are short of the power and strength to fight back and be at the will to choose what they want and how they want it, then, students are left with no option than to accept it all as it slides in. The acceptance is therefore not to a defeat but accepted due to the fact that it has being seen as a negative externality.

The semester is therefor on the way to the exit way, it has become of note to face it with some extra strength and attitudes required to conquer it. That we are here to keep the semester in run implies that we still value education and ready to sacrifice other alternatives (working and earning) for schooling. It is of necessary to take it up and attack it with our full strength so that the smile that comes in at the of the tunnel will shine full lightnings. It of essence to locate the driving motivation and better get ourselves prepared for what it’s to come.

Early Childhood Education holds the 511th inaugural lecture in UI

By: Blessing OPEYEMI

The University of Ibadan held her 511th inaugural lecture delivered by Professor Esther A. Oduolowu of the Department of Early Childhood at Trenchard Hall, University of Ibadan on the 22nd of December, 2022.

The inaugural lecture tagged Sustainable Development in Nigeria: Early Childhood Education as the cornerstone centered on the importance and indispensability of early childhood education in building a sustainable Nigeria. “It is the first step of learning and the springboard on which education structure should be built.” according to the professor.

However, little attention has been given to this cornerstone of sustainable development.

In the 21st century classrooms, sets of critical skills are needed for the digital labour market and schools should produce citizens who work with their mind and their hands.According to the lecture, there are 250 million children globally under the age of five who are at risk of development due to lack of good education, stress and poor nutrition. According to this statistics, Nigeria is one of the top 10 countries in the world with children under the age of five who are at risk of poor development.

However, this can be mitigated if the national policy on education for language of instruction for Universal Basic Education which provides that children in their first three years of basic education should be taught in their indigenous or mother tongue is implemented in schools amongst other things; because this is their language of creativity and critical thinking.

Coming home to the University of Ibadan, the department of Early Childhood Education since 2016 has been offering a web-based Postgraduate Early Childhood Education Diploma Programme at the University of Ibadan which costs about two million naira and recently a campus-based part has been added. This is done in the bid to educate more people to achieve a sustainable Nigeria.

The University of Ibadan was the first university to offer Early Childhood Education as a course and it has been around for over 45 years in the university.

UITES, FESTIVE SEASON CELEBRATION:TRAVEL OR STAY?

UITES, FESTIVE SEASON CELEBRATION:TRAVEL OR STAY?

If them born you well travel—– University of Ibadan

This is the popular meme that is now in circulation across Uites whatsapp statuses and even social media platform like twitter.

This is the state of reality as the University of Ibadan has also declared that work resumes on 28th December 2022  and 3rd January 2023, after the Christmas new year .

This first semester of the 2021/2022 has been a very short one, due to the strike embarked on by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, thus an adjusted academic calendar to ensure the semester is completed on time.

The decision of the school management has put most Uites in a dilemma, to make a choice between two things that seem equally undesirable, to travel home and miss test? To stay in School and miss the fun filled yuletide celebrations as opposed to the one spend without family.

The University Management can not be blamed for this short break or no break because it is obvious how many months was lost to ASUU strike, to give long holidays now will only jeopardize the University`s plan of finishing the session at the stipulated time.

As for UItes who are stressed, tensed due to the nature of this semester( a short one) and want to travel home to relieve themselves of the stress and `shege`  that they might have pass through, this thought then need to be subjected to Moral reasoning.

A festive season celebration will not be bad in UI, Will it?

A twitter handler samsonoke10  painted an ideal Christmas celebration  “Omoooo, just imagine a live band performing at Love garden in the evening on Sunday with free food somewhere around those sits and no disruption whatsoever, giving proper owambe vybes……    Would be the best way to celebrate Christmas for we that are not going anywhere”

Whichever way it turns out to be, Christmas should be celebrated with so much joy and love should be spread.

Wishing you a fun-filled Christmas and New Year Celebration.

FACULTY OF EDUCATION ORGANIZES GYRATION PARTY

By FPO

On Wednesday, 21st December 2022, Faculty of Education executives held a Gyration party at the Faculty of Education Foyer to relief educators and UI students at large of the stressful academic workload.

The gyration which was themed “Gyration- the shege relief you need is here” was attended by students of Faculty of Education and other students who also came to relax and chill out notable in attendance was UISU President, Adewole Adeyinka pka Mascots, the NUESA executives and other stakeholders in the Faculty.

The booming sound of music resounded around the Faculty as participants were entertained with music, games and lots of dancing.

CHANGE

Though some trees still bear green leaves,

We still cried and fasted for change; and we received our change,

Hunger striking like a thief during day and night.

We’ve become prisoners befriending shackles and fetters of poverty.

The hellish jail now our paradise, thick darkness; our shadow.

Our bones have swallowed our flesh.

Oceans of garri, inside our veins.

During the reign of thick darkness, everywhere has clear as crystal.

We watch silently in pains and sorrows as the hungry diseases devours,

We hear the dead mocking and taunting us.

Water playing games with our dry tongue,

Children sleeping during the day.

We were dead, but we weren’t dead.

Our guards guarding our fiery foes,

Our watchmen vaulting our valuables,

The busy roads awaiting to hurt black rubbers but hasn’t felt one.

They said we have freedom, our freedom leading to our bondage.

MENTOR OF THE WEEK

AN INTERVIEW WITH AYINDE OLUWABUNMI DAVID

By: Ojediran Temitayo (Herald)

Hi , can we meet you?

Good evening. I am AyindeOluwabunmi David politically known as Davi Cruise , a penultimate student of the department of Arts and Social Sciences education (Political Science option). I’m the Incumbent Social Director of the Faculty of Education and a former Assistant general secretary of the great ASE department. I am also a studentpreneur.

Okay, how did you come about your nickname?

I get this question a lot. The name ‘Çruise’ was gotten from my Uncle. He’s my mentor and I love him so much. He is Israel and calls himself Izzycruise. I am David and so I decided to go with Davi Cruise.  I guess it fits my type of person too.

Tell us your type of person

David is a positive minded person who looks for positivity in all things. I’ve been told I’m intelligent and generous. I feel like I’m responsible for my own happiness and I have realistic expectations of myself. Davi Cruise on the other hand just wants to have fun and meet people.

Great!!!

Typically, you are a cruise person that still knows what he’s doing, how then did politics set in? Being the AGS of the department in your first year and then current SD of the Faculty

Surprisingly, people think anyone who plays a lot aren’t also prudent. My Dad, He’s a lover of politics and a politician. I loved politics because my dad would never miss the 9pm AIT news and 10pm TVC news when I was growing up. I had no choice but to sit with him else I’ll be sent to bed early. Growing older, I and my dad would sit and discuss on trivial issues affecting the country and solutions. My interest grew, I loved the subject government and also graduated as the Best graduating student in government from my secondary school Alma mater . I knew I was going to go into main stream politics and the university politics is a training ground for me. I want to effect change.

Wow!!!, That means you had your plans even before coming to the first and the best

Yes, I made findings. Departmental level to Faculty level to Student Union level. So help me God.

How was it for you trying to do politics, face your academics and also Catch the cruise?

Overwhelming I must say. Sometimes it looks like politics is taking so much of your time and you’ve forgotten why you’re in the university of Ibadan, sometimes you face your academics so much that you neglect your political goals, sometimes you find yourself playing too much and neglecting others.  It takes self-discipline and God’s grace that I’m still doing well in my academics, holding a political position and still catching my cruise.

Was emerging the AGS of the department last session an easy thing?

Tell us the lessons learnt

Nothing good comes easy. It wasn’t rosy starting from the campaign processes. I remember my phone got spoilt while campaigning and I’d have to lend my friend’s (Aquila and Daniel) phone to send BCs. Administration also wasn’t easy although the office of the AGS in the department has minor duties but one still needed to devote time and be available to students. I learnt how to strictly schedule time and work with them. I also learnt leadership skills through my fellow executives who were also my seniors.

Rate your performance as the then AGS

I rate my performance 6.5\10 because I didn’t really have lot of duties to perform but the ones I had, I did them well and also delegated duties.

How did you feel when you were announced as the social director in the last Faculty election?

Elated and Loved. Elated because it’s my second election and I won. Loved because of how i won and the number of people who voted me. I always put that at the back of mind and I won’t disappoint them.

Did you see yourself as the better candidate?

Yes, always.

My fear wasn’t if I was the better candidate or not. It was if I’d win or not because sometimes, the better candidates don’t win.

Hmmm. True

How’s the journey being so far as the Social director?

It’s been beautiful. I have amazing executives. We always remind ourselves on why we were elected and why we need to perform our duties well. Big, big pressure to deliver but we handle it well.

Fulfilled any of your manifesto?

I’ve held the freshest fresher contest in the freshers welcome. It was supposed to start online and move to physical but there wasn’t too much time to do that. Fresher of the week should start this week. There’s a gyration coming up on the 16th of this month also. Others will come into fruition in second semester by God’s grace.

After social director, what next?

A student Union position if God says yes. I don’t think I’m allowed to say it now but Davi Cruise is COMING.

What advice will you give Freshers who want to explore their interests but not jeopardize their primary aim in Ui?

  1. Always communicate with your parents. They constantly remind you of who you are and what you should do.
  2. Good friends: My friends especially in the department have saved me countless times by always calling me to order when I’m deviating.
  3. Academics first. No one will listen to interests from someone who doesn’t take studies seriously.
  4. Don’t get carried away by Fame. That’s where point 1 and 2 comes in .
  5. Always ask God to direct your steps

Give us your parting Shot

Hard work and determination pays. What keeps me going is this – Try again until you win.

Thank you very much.

THE MENTAL AND PHYSICAL BENEFITS OF SPORTS

THE EFFECT OF CELEBRITY LIFESTYLES ON YOUTHS OF 21ST CENTURY

By: The Scribe

In a diverse world we live consisting of various facets of events unfolding like dramas of life. Lots of years, decades and centuries have gone by which had witnessed various turns and runs with each to a significant trademark that shaped the lifestyles of our fore-runners, lay for us a background to build on and continue to structure the way our life events come to play.

The current century has been one of the ‘last days’ centuries whereby we witness actions of mouthwatering, terribly amazing actualizations and also magnificent pours which had therefore leave us speechless. Likewise, the youths of the 21st century are one of flexible and dramatic kind considering their model of living which includes their high rate of freedom mentality and freewill. Also, youths per say shapes to be the number one lovers of celebrities as they follow their minute to minute life events. These activities celebrities reside in tend to dictate the youths’ lifestyle to a large extent.

Being of pliable structure, the emotions of youths are appealed to which causes them to do some things that are in resemblance with celebrities’ formalities. Young minds of this century have perceived these ‘well known guys’ as models whom they can look up to and perform part of what they engage in. Youths feel everything celebrities live in are legit and well acceptable in terms of normality. This is due to their undying likeness for the activities and style of living of celebrities.

Unarguably, most celebrities are somehow spoilt in their spending that brought about the uncaring attitude in how much they live rich. Blame not these folks because if they know and actually realize that there are kids, teenagers and youths out there looking up to them as a follower will look up to his leader, as a child will look up to his parents’ way of life, as a trainee will look up to his trainer, they would have been very much careful and with their everyday step.

It must be noted that the yearnings of how prodigal and unconcerned most celebrities’ lifestyles are is not a call to apportion criticism or find fault in their liberty of life, rather, it’s just a conscious notice to how these activities impact greatly on youths (which are their number one lovers). The hair styles, dressing mode, talks and activities they participate in are what young ones imitate and make sure they perform such an act in their own respective life.

In reference to the above mentioned, for instance, the ‘dreadlock’ hairstyle, the ‘school na scam’ and other widespread slangs, the attractive dressing modes and other related of such are what youths of this century take on to exhibit which are of celebrity lifestyle offspring. In same format, you tend to see a ‘celeb’ displaying the latest phone and the next thing you see is youths summing up all energies to possess such possessions. They thereby go extra mile in living same rich life kind their mentors swim in.

Importantly, these well-known figures must really come to the realistic point and realize that the path they walk on which leaves their foot print behind are what their lovers/followers passionately follows. Celebrities needs to be much careful concerning activities they do as the model of youths’ life format in the society is a replica of what they had displayed through their appearance, music lyrics, life on stage, life in real scene and most notably, their lifestyle.

Should we really blame youths for blindly imitating celebrities’ life events? Even if these guys parade behaviors that are not acceptable, must they be blamed for its impact on youths? We all are accountable for any good or bad that befall our life as we know the rights from wrongs, it’s our sole decision to decide which of the two paths to take. Even if a figure you look up to is walking towards destruction (as we all are humans), that doesn’t instruct you also to follow such suit because everyone is wholly accountable for his deeds.

EDUCATION: THE NEGLECTED INSTRUMENT OF THE SOCIETY

By: Seilat Olajide

The process of transferring and acquiring knowledge can be traced right from conception, the growth of a fetus in the womb comes with some mental growth that induce education has taken place, no one taught an unborn child to turn till that happens, a child when born is regarded by John Locke as a “tabula rasa” empty slate or sheet” which simplifies that the mind has not been occupied with any form of information and can be shaped in accordance to ones will. To a large extent, a child’s mind is not totally a tabula rasa at birth, as instinct has made some mental process of a learnt behaviour occur, a child at birth embrace the mother’s bosom to satisfy his or her physiological needs, these implies education has beenever present and not dependent even without a step into the world.

A society without education has been left to trace a darken route in quest of survival, the beast part of their nature is not concealed and this open them to all sort of barbaric behavior. To be informed is to be useful and guided, a society that has been left uniformed will follow a trace that can’t be connected to a faithful society, human is naturally selfish and ruthless, but the beast character can only be locked by civilization. An anarchical society with no government, existing law guiding human behaviour would be seen with foul character relating to their selfish nature. To gather and move away from this life situation postulates the fact that education needs to be embraced.

Nigeria before colonialism practiced a form of education to maintain organization, the informal or traditional form of education create a peaceful society where a head who establishes a friendly affair in all ramifications. Genuinely, it was an organized society but there were forms of inhuman acts which is brought about from their cultural belief, this limit their reasoning as they were never outside the box, and any innovation towards their preserved beliefs is totally regarded as taboo. This was the type of education that was maintained till the formal education was introduced by the missionaries, and this mark the beginning of a better and more prospect society.

Formal education is given with an available curriculum to blend with the needs of the society, the society needed a good health care to save lives which warranted the need to train doctors and nurses. The society needed a better economic growth domestically, there is a need for economist, the rules and relations arealso of essential and must be maintained. At the apex of it is a system of government with the head to maintain the affairs of the state and promote dignity and honour.

The society of today is that in which education is taken with levity dwelling on a path to getting it buried. The appropriate instruments and techniques needed to develop the educational sector has been condemned, the teachers and lecturers aren’t motivated, the infrastructure are totally gone, all concerning education has been totally condemned, then, how can a country develop air limited thinkers who are not informed? how can a country grow without a good education put in place?

Starting from the designing of a curriculum which is poorly designed, the prospect of the society lies in how well it is organized to produce an equipped minded people who can critically think about building a nation without any form if corruption. A non-informed mind is thereby a corrupt mind. When the area of education is set with no good future, hope people seek for other means of survival even if it is contrary to the manners and value they have been built with. There is no regard for educational development including the faculty building other sectors in the society, the negative attitude towards education in all areas can make a country lose its power of influence as well as development.

It was a cloudy experience in those days when education hasn’t formally found its way into the economy like Nigeria, the situation was bad and inhuman, human beings were blindfolded in an unaware manner, and getting liberated from the darkness to the corner of light which is yet to be matured shows a lot is still needed to put in place. It will be poor and hopeless to throw the power that liberate one from a poor mind and go back to the poor situation of life.

‘THAT WE ARE EDUCATORS AND NOT PUSHOVERS

By: The Scribe

Ranging from the node and known facets by which the fashion of curriculum is designed that stretches the acquisition of honors postulates the seen and unseen struggles being faced by individuals/students under the umbrella of the Faculty of Education house. It can be rightly said that this house is a one that habitat minds who are projected by the public as sub-half in its house and seek for a completion elsewhere. Even through the activities surrounded by the way line meant to be experienced along its shapes, it thereby rolls out the confirmation of what is being faced by students under this umbrella.

What are we saying? The faculty of Education known to be the mother of all faculties which birth other disciplines through the order of the professions seems to be seen as a one that is of low quality in terms of its intelligence. How true or untrue this is strolls further to some level of argument with strongly backed reasons. But to the extent by which some members of the public or other individuals from other faculties tend to view education students and the disciplines enriched in it as a whole is what this article tends to address. The basis of the activities, the quality of the faculty, duties engage in by the students of the faculty and how well or bad they’ve performed will be stretched during the course of this article.

Firstly, it is of note to address and lecture minds who see education students as pushovers owing to the cut off marks that serves as a benchmark for admission into the faculty. One would wonder when cut off marks became the measure of intelligence or how sound a group of individuals are. Out of this idea is one that points out that students from other faculties who fail to perform well tends to be ‘erosioned’ to the faculty of education. This was actually a former practice by the university management which has been stopped about two sessions ago so as to nullify the saying this article is trying to correct that ‘Education is not a dumping ground and educators are never pushovers’

The faculty of education is often characterized with high population due to the number of departments it housed. Out of these departments is the department of Arts and Social Sciences Education and Science and Technology Education that have more than 3 sub departments with the former having 11 sub department and later having 4 sub departments. Many a people often feel the high number of the faculty’s population postulates that it is filled with weak bones and pushovers. Anyone seeming to generalize on this reasoning is considered weak in logical circumference. To this high number of students is one of the reasons the faculty is considered the most populous in the university.

It is mandated to be of notice that faculty of education students offer much courses than any other faculties. Ranging from faculty courses, departmental courses, general courses and borrowed courses from departments of borrowed course (teaching course) sums the bulk of courses they offer. Owing to this is where education students experience clashing of courses on timetable between faculty of education timetable and another faculties’ time table. The faculty of Arts, Social Science and Sciences where education students offer courses from seem not to put into consideration its effect on them. How well do you expect a student who miss about 80% of a course lecture to perform in continuous assessments and examination? Still, they strive hard to perform excellently.

Should we say the faculty of education students are not always put into consideration when issues surrounding academics are being debated on? The string of clashing of courses, education taking exam first even through the bulk of courses they are made to take further register the statistics which has to do with their low performance sometimes. At this point, it is of note to further stress on this examination time table design. Education, Agriculture and Law faculties (which the other two takes lower courses in their departments compared to education) kicks off the exam after one week of GES examinations. An education student offering about 7 – 8 courses within the faculty is meant to run that within two weeks.

Moreover, at the end of these two weeks, such an individual is meant to join his/her borrowed course faculties for another stretch of exam where his counterparts in this faculty have been on off for two weeks. This is quite an obvious reason that explains the low performance often recorded of education students. Even through these adversaries, it is of note to register and reckon the fact that education students have always put in their best to perform well and sometimes top the rank of scores in their borrowed courses results. The degree of weight placed on a student offering 14 courses across two faculties in semester can never be compared to one who takes 7 courses in same semester in a single faculty.

Going a step higher from the academic’s world, in other activities like sports, education students have always been raising the flags high both within the university against other departments and across the country in competitions like Pre-NUGA and NUGA. Also, in debates, we see education students representing their hall of residence well and not letting the faculty down in such occasions/competitions. In the students’ political world, it is of known to the entire university’s length and breath that education students never fail to display the true act of political activities and have always demonstrate such in a way that serves as role model to other faculties.

Conclusively, in the steps and printings laid by this article, it won’t be anywhere acceptable and encouraging to still see mouths lashing low of education student’s credibility and intelligence. Considering the nature of the faculty’s career that is on motion to train future teachers who in turn be the mastermind of tomorrow’s education drivers. Are these pushovers? Also, the department of Arts and Social Science Education and Science and Technology Education students tend to be in a race of bagging double honors, yet some call these individuals pushovers? Maybe this article is better off concluding on the notion that those referring to faculty of education students as pushovers are saying such out of the well of jealousy. It is wide enough to state at this line that faculty of education students are educators and never for once pushovers!

MATTERS ARISING (1)

A WATCH, A NEED FOR ACCOUNTABILITY AND EFFECTIVENESS (INTRO.)

By: The Scribe

Charged of the press is the required sense to inform the populace of the of ongoing within the length and breadth it covers (its boundaries). This connotes that when matters of checkmating and pointing of need for correction is at hand, there arise the warranted notion to swim in and perform the role (by the press). We will all agree to the idea that letting issues slide by without the press painting its pen style on it, in watching, informing and correcting, such will not connote the presence of an effective ‘claimed’ Fourth Estate of the Realm charged with such duties.

It is also of noteworthy to clearly stress yet again (as we did in our previous articles) that the press is not an organization set to critique the activities of the executive arm or the legislative arm. It is also not an organization that is all bent in ‘praying’ towards the fall of either of the previously mentioned parties so as to use such to grow its (press) space. Whereas, it comes to a point (most times) that through the activities of the press trying to disseminate information and clarifying matters, in such light to keep its location up to date, lines shall surely cross! And when such line crosses, it is warranted as respected individuals (that we all are) to pick sense from the entire ‘confusions’ (which might not be) and process out through critical thoughts.

There is a glimpse of understanding which is obvious to almost all that forces might tend to work against each other due to the hard tussle for power. This is envisioned as a political way of life which is ever present in any of such setting, but once such is beginning to affect the duties and responsibilities meant to be carried out by these parties, then, there is need to voice and correct such before it tends to slip off hand. In a bid to point to notion of some activities that seem to be on quest of danger, some indications will be called upon to decorate this discuss.

Individuals who hold positions tend to have a wrong orientation of what such role entails as close to 60% of these individuals who have eyes to serve in an executive or legislative position knows of little of the role and responsibilities. Firstly, to any leadership role comes the advent of sacrifice and utmost dedication, sacrifice that come with some quantifiable prices, sacrifices that are costly and those that are inevitable. But it is quite displeasing to seeing individuals holding positions stretching forth legs and seeming all calm when all is said to be – ‘fire on the mountain.’

It is an unacceptable idea and attitude to see the acquisition of leadership roles as an instrument to generate popularity or get the populace to know ‘you’ the more or a stepping stone to an envisaged position. It is also of the need to note that some are not even aware of their roles to other organs of the umbrella they are, by roles, we mean the constitutional duties that guides them and serves as a daily pledge/oath to the office they hold on to. Some who know it by heart are either too engrossed by the beauty of the office they hold or they willingly neglect the acts of those duties/roles. Acting in this sense connotes an act of irresponsibility and charges of ineffectiveness.

At the expense of these deficiencies and absence of accountability lies the failure to carry out charged responsibilities as at when due which can further bring about some interconnected failures. Also, these can be tagged as negligence of duties as ineffectiveness points at the strikes of not producing the expected outcome through the resources available. Even to such individual lies the negative tagged label of failure which can serve as a constraint to any futuristic ambition aimed at. One wonder if such person ever reason at these laid out consequences or even aware of these and yet decided to consciously ignore and enjoy life.

As stated earlier, the press is not on motion to attack or all bent in finding faults in activities carried out by its other arms, all we seek is to inform and correct. We are never an instrument used to set up an arm against another, stressing the notion that we are non-partisan further registers our evergreen credibility. This article as accorded by its ideas is just an introduction to what its nose perceives. There is need to at first send signals and then wait to see if the signals are yielded to or not. It will be of joy to the writer of this piece if to whom this is directed make corrections and set it all on order, if not, the pen shall then speak in a more direct format.

To whom it may concern, note that the press has eyes everywhere and the press is always watching. Never interpret the silence of the press to ignorance, lack of mastery or taking sides. Here, the pen has spoken to an extent and will slide for now, not to rest but to keep its signal tabs high and watch the aftermath. This particular pen is a very special one made for this special turnout occasions. Trust me when I say it shall not be used for any other responsibility so as to preserve its strength for what seems to come. Dear all, THE PEN IS WATCHING AND SHALL SURELY BE BACK!

By: The Scribe

The Department Consultative Council (DCC) of the Arts and Social Science Education Department held its5th sitting of the semester on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at the faculty sit-out.
